Book Description

This brilliantly original study uncovers a side to Napoleon Bonaparte which has hitherto been ignored by biographers - that of the aspiring novelist and man of letters. In this illuminating, witty and elegantly written book, Andy Martin reveals how this neglected aspect of Napoleon's remarkable life actually provides the key to understanding it. The French Revolution, Austerlitz and Waterloo all came second in Napoleon's life to a Discourse on Happiness, a Dialogue on Love and repeated attempts at a novel. Napoleon began as a would-be Rousseau and ended up on Saint Helena dictating his own confessions. The colossal rise and catastrophic fall of his empire are, Martin argues, anticipated in the obsessive and tragicomic pages of his voluminous writings. Napoleon emerges as an idealist, romantic, visionary, critic, a thinker with an epic imagination and an underdeveloped sense of reality, pushing his 'portable library' across Europe, Asia and the Orient, and always wrestling with the intricacies of language and literature. And, although Napoleon was denounced as a failure in an essay competition, Martin shows that he did indeed succeed in imposing himself as the archetype and inspiration of modern European culture. This provocative book will appeal to a wide general readership. It will also be of interest to students of literature, modern languages and European history.

Good book, but I whish it had more quotes from Napoleon's writing. Great for entrepreneurs, technologist, lovers, expats... for people who live life on the edge of complete success or complete failure, thinking only of the past of future, but never the present.

      Book Description

In their first three years of life babies face the most complex learning endeavor they will ever undertake as human beings: They learn to talk. Now, as researchers make new forays into the mystery of the development of the human brain, authors Roberta Michnick Golinkoff and Kathy Hirsh-Pasek, both developmental psychologists and language experts, offer parents a powerfully insightful guidebook to how infants--even while in the womb--begin to learn language. Along the way, the authors provide parents with the latest scientific findings, developmental milestones, and important advice on how to create the most effective learning environments for their children. This book takes readers on a fascinating, vitally important exploration of the dance between nature and nurture, and explains how parents can help their children learn more successfully.

"This is a great book. It's an important addition to any parent's library." --T. Berry Brazelton

      Download Description

Did you know that a fetus can distinguish between similar sounds? Or that a four-month-old can recognize her name? The culmination of years of research, How Babies Talk explains exactly how babies learn language in their first three years of life. This accessible guide for parents outlines the milestones babies reach and how parents can help their babies reach them. It shows what they can do to facilitate the language learning process, how to use simple at-home tests to measure their child's progress, and what warning signs might indicate a problem. Few books have explored the incredible feat of learning language in such fascinating detail, and no other authors are as well qualified to explain it. A critical contribution to the literature of parenting and child development, How Babies Talk will serve as the premier language facilitator for generations to come.

      1 out of 5 stars A big disappointment.......2006-05-11

As a new parent with an interest in linguistics, I was really looking forward to this, but I was disappointed to find it boring, repetitive, and sometimes sloppily written. Parents worried about a slow talker will be made more rather than less concerned, as this book almost never acknowledges how much different children vary in the timing of developmental milestones. Those interested in an overview of language acquisition will be disconcerted by the slap-dash summaries of important findings, which often feature startling logical lapses in their explanations (there is, though, an extensive bibliography--the one aspect of the book I find praiseworthy).

The babies in the condescendingly described made-up illustrations of experiments are almost all sterotypically white and middle class (judging from their names), monolingual, and cared-for-only-by-the-mother. Perhaps this disconnect from the lives of many readers is supposed to be compensated for by the numerous "try this at home" style "experiments," which are unrealistic bits of padding that repeat points from the text (which have often been repeated at least once already).

In all, a frustrating and condescending book that makes a fascinating subject less interesting. A better introduction is the relevant chapter in Lise Elliot's "What's Going On in There: How the Brain and Mind Develop in the First Five Years of Life," a book that, much like this one, could have used some serious editing, but that is light-years better in its presentation of the material. William O'Grady's "How Children Learn Language" looks pretty good, but I haven't read it yet because it is so ridiculously expensive.

5 out of 5 stars I have been waiting for this!.......2003-08-12

I looked and looked for a book like this. I just wanted to learn how a baby manages to learn language - and why my daughter's first ten words included such irrelevant words as 'duck' and 'buckle.'

The book does an excellent job at explaining just how scientists believe a child is learning at each stage. It also explains the experiments that they use and how the conclusions are reached - fascinating.

This is NOT a book to help you guage whether or not your child needs assistance. This is NOT a book to make your baby into a super-baby. This is a book that gives you clear insight into how his mind is developing. I would buy this book for anyone with a baby.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding and credible book.......2001-05-25

I found this book extraordinarily helpful in understanding and tracking my daugher's learning. I gained three valuable insights from this book: (1) a clearer understanding of how language acquisition occurs (2) specific examples of how I can assist my child with the language acquisition process (3) a valuable insight to how much my daughter can understand prior to her ability to communicate it.

This book brought additional enjoyment because after reading this book, I immediately noticed additional examples of my daughter's progression in language learning that I'd previously overlooked.

Additionally, the book contains a balanced mixture of research and specific examples. This combination makes it both credible and readable. I actually found it hard to put down, which is very impressive for a research based book!

I'd also highly recommend Baby Signs by Linda Acredolo

3 out of 5 stars If you have a late talker not the book for you.......2000-06-10

My son is 16 months and this book was helpful in pointing out to me that he was saying things, I just was looking for better formed words and not listening very well (chalk it up to first time mom)!

However, the book states that the average age a baby talks is 12 months, but can go to 24 months. There was a study mentioned in their book that stated the average first word in the study was produced at 13.5 months.

I do not think this book is helpful for parents trying to find encouragement and answers as to why their child isn't talking. Most of the examples they give of first word talkers at 12 and 13 months. There is mention of a 17 month 1st word talker, but their reason was because he had ear infections.

I would have liked to read more examples of later talkers without any "ear infections" or disabilites being the case.

5 out of 5 stars Help for the new parent.......2000-02-08

This book offers a parent some insight into the processes involved for a baby learning to speak. I have found myself rereading each age-related section as my son ages. More than anything, I think this book helped me to relax about my son's learning to talk; speech development is occuring even though it might not be verbalized at the moment. The references to the various research studies offered me some ideas about methods of communicating with my son without the aid of his speech. His glances, his reactions, all are methods of communicating with me, as long as I'm receptive enough to pay attention!

Many cookbooks tempt, inform, and inspire. A few capture the essence of a place, but rarely does a cookbook communicate the very soul of a place. Anna Tasca Lanza's telling of life at Regaleali, the vast estate that has belonged to her family since 1830, is so vivid that you feel her sitting next to you, talking and turning the pages of The Heart of Sicily as if it were a photo album.

Tasca Lanza provides enough information about Sicily's complex history and rich culture to help you understand the special nature of Regaleali and what her noble family--rich with barones, principessas, and contessas--has created. Under their stewardship, this working estate has become an international cooking school. It is also the place where Tasca Lanza pursues her passion for preserving the abundant culinary and cultural traditions of Sicily.

You will appreciate the years Tasca Lanza took to make the intense flavors of Sicilian food come through using ingredients readily available in the United States. Many recipes are short and simple, relying on seasonal ingredients, as in Pasta con le Zucchine Fritte (Pasta with Fried Zucchini) and Melanzane a Cotoletta (Breaded Eggplant Cutlets). There are recipes for all of the major traditional Sicilian dishes, from Caponata, Involtini di Pesce Spada (Swordfish Rolls) and Pasta con le Sarde (Pasta with Fresh Sardines) to Sfincione (Sicilian Pizza) and Cassata, marzipan-coated cheesecake decorated with candied fruit.

      Book Description

In a warm, witty text and more than 125 photographs, a Sicilian aristocrat shares her world with us, describing the land and depicting country life in an exquisite book destined to become a classic. Illustrated with extraordinary photographs by Franco Zecchin that capture the rigor and beauty of Sicily, this is an inspiring cookbook for anyone who loves food. Full-color photographs.

5 out of 5 stars Grace and Flavor.......2003-12-20

By Bill Marsano. 1993 was a landmark year for cookbooks: That was the year Contessa Anna Tasca Lanza published "The Heart of Sicily." Long out of print, it is now restored to us at last. Cause for rejoicing! The Contessa seldom uses her title; in fact, she prefers to be known for her cooking and her cooking school. And so she is--internationally. The importance of her title is only this: It ties her to Regaleali, the great estate that has been at the heart of Sicily for centuries--since the time, in fact, of the Arab conquest, when the place was known as Rahal-Ali or Village of Ali. Sicilian cooking isn't "Italian cooking"--it's one of the 20 or so related cuisines to be found in Italy, and it is at the same time the most and least original. Most because it is so little akin to any of the others; least because it's really a composite, developed from so many other source cuisines: Greek, Roman, Arab, Norman, French, Spanish. Still, it's not exactly a mystery because so many of the 19th-Century immigrants to America were Sicilians, and their food was, for many of us, the first "Italian food" we tasted. The book naturally follows a seasonal menu--Regaleali, though mostly a winery, remains enough of a farm to grow most of its own food. Also, since the sea in Sicily is never far away, there is much to be made of anchovies and swordfish and tuna. Finally, since we are in Sicily, the sweets and pastries are breath-taking. The Contessa is a non-nonsense cook, I was relieved to find. For all her fame and stature she is perfectly content with boullion cubes, noting only that pepper and especially salt must be added with great care at the end of cooking to avoid over-seasoning. Likewise she's not one of those who claim that olive oil cannot be kept for more than a year--keep it cool and in the dark, she says, and it will keep far longer. You will find here recipes familiar and recipes startlingly new to you, and there is overall a conversational approach: You feel as if you and she are cooking on the same side of the stove. Most important you will find that the Contessa's beauty and dignity infuse her prose style as well. To take but one example: "The winter sunshine in Sicily is one of the most beautiful things you can experience. I remember one magical day, one of those days I call a gift from God. The sky was blue, blue, blue, and the countryside green everywhere. From where I stood, I could see the Madonie Mountains, covered with snow, and Etna, also snowcapped, in the distance. All around me was silence, except for a few birds here and there talking to one another." The recipes are clearly laid out and easy enough to follow. You will want to take care to purchase Regaleali wines, which bear the label of the Counts Tasca d-Almerita, to serve with them (look them up at www.winebow.com). The many, many photographs are spectacular.--Bill Marsano is a James Beard award-winning writer on wine, food and travel.

4 out of 5 stars A Way of Life: Food & Family on a Grand Estate.......2001-07-11

Anna Tasca immerses you in the daily life of her noble, progressive, very close knit family whose life revolves around enjoying food, wine and each other's company and love. You feel like you're by their sides through all the seasons in the kitchen and on the land on their Regaleali estate. As you drool over the recipes of each season, from simple to exotic to complicated, from traditional to more modern, you feel Anna is chatting away with you. On things like how she and a team made tomato extract from 4000 pounds of tomatoes over 10 days, how her family expanded their wine business (her mum went from restaurant to restaurant selling 130,000 bottles one year), how important citrus is in Sicilian cooking (some wonderful recipes like Citrus Risotto!), how their shepherds make cheese, how they all celebrate the end of the harvest and new wine (same menu every year, her parents start the dancing). I'm an average cook so I stick to the easier recipes and dream of going to Sicily again to taste the others! A delightful book!....

      5 out of 5 stars Italian Cruisine.......2000-05-10

Anna Lanza heartfelt look at Italian culture and cruisine was splendid because of her personal view of Sicily. The photos contained in the book were so beautiful (and there were so many)! I have made several of the recipes and they were easy to follow and turned out exceptional.

3 out of 5 stars Darling dolls but many errors.......2007-10-08

I picked up this book because the doll on the front cover looked just like my daughter and I thought it would be cute to make one for her. I am a fairly new knitter but thought the pattern appeared to be something I could tackle. I did find some errors in the instructions for the legs (very confusing for a new knitter). I also found it strange that there was not any type of gauge or swatch (I was taught to NEVER skip this step!), nor the finished size of the doll or any of the toys. Once I did finally get the doll made up, it did turn out to be very adorable in a retro sort of way (think the Island of Misfit Toys on Rudolph) and my daughter absolutely loves it.
I am now trying to knit up the wrap sweater, and the instructions are disappointing. I was hoping to make a set of clothes for her doll, but if the rest of the instructions are as erroneous or incomplete as the ones for the sweater, I'm afraid I won't get them done.

            1 out of 5 stars Don't bother.......2007-09-06

I had a similar experience to a lot of the other reviewers. Bought this book because the projects looked cute, but the instructions are terrible. Vague and chock-full of mistakes (were there no testers for any of these patterns?). A lot of these pieces could have been knit in the round with a bit of shaping, instead you have to knit a gazillion tiny pieces and then seam together "according to illustrations". There are no illustrations. Only a few really bad photographs - I mean, they're cute and all, but totally useless. There's a pattern for a cute looking fish with a bunch of scales that are knit and then sewn on "according to illustration" but in the photo, the fish is peeking out from the folds of a blanket, you can barely see a couple of scales.

In another pattern for an elephant, there are so many pieces to make individually that I've given up hope that I'll ever finish it. Even with many years' knitting and designing experience, it's more effort to fix these patterns than it is to just create one from scratch!

It's deceiving in its perceived simplicity. A novice knitter might leaf through the book and see that they only need to know how to knit and purl and do a simple increase and decrase, but it is easier to learn a few more shaping stitches than to suffer through the dozens of seams required to assemble the final product, especially since the incorrect instructions often lead to pieces that dont fit together properly. Very frustrating and a huge waste of $16.

3 out of 5 stars cute patterns- but a challenge.......2007-06-30

I found a copy of 'tucker the monkey' posted online for free and knit it up in a few days for a friend's baby shower. I found that some of the directions didn't exactly line up as far as right side and wrong side rows but figured I'd just add a row here or there to make it work. I have only been knitting for about a year, but found it easy enough to follow. My complaint is the vague directions about some pieces being knit with one strand of yarn or two- and the gauge was totally off for the little scarf and vest, I ended up just making up the directions for the vest as I went along. However, all the vagueness and mistakes aside, he turned out wonderfully and was the hit of the party. Because he turned out so well, I bought the book and am looking forward to trying the other patterns, even if the omissions increase the difficulty.

5 out of 5 stars Toys to Knit.......2007-03-09

Wonderful patterns from infant toys to toddlers and behond.
Instructions clear and accurate. The little mouse is adorable and fun to make.
This is the best knitted toy book that I have found!

1 out of 5 stars Not worth it.......2007-02-25

This book is...well...There is no gauge, no yardage requirements, and no finished measurements. I was hoping to make doll clothes for my daughter's dolls she already has.
Also, the colors in the photos differ from page to page of the same toy. The pattern says "pink", but the pictures say 3 different colors as each photo looks 'off' from the previouse one.
Some of the toys are cute, but the author leaves so much unanswered about them that I'll just find another book, thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Longevity: An Alternative Medicine Definitive Guide.......2003-04-12

We don't have to develop diseases or lose our mental faculties as we age. Deterioration is not inevitable, according to W. Lee Cowden, M.D., Ferre Akbarpour, M.D., Russ DiCarlo, and Burton Goldberg. They explain why in Longevity: An Alternative Medicine Definitive Guide.

They maintain that many conditions connected with old age are the cumulative effects of lifestyle habits rather than a natural part of aging. Their emphasis is on the quality of later years and continuing good health, rather than in merely increasing the number of years lived. Their goal is to "show you how to `age well' using safe, noninvasive alternative therapies."
Aging well involves "improving nutrition, reducing stress, detoxifying the body, boosting immune function, balancing hormones, and rebuilding brain power." These are all practices that improve health regardless of age, but are of particular importance as the body grows older.

The authors begin by explaining the changes the body and mind undergo as the years pass. They then detail how readers can develop their own longevity program, customized to their individual body chemistry. Following that is an extensive discussion of the aging factors and how to modify lifestyle habits to minimize the effects of each.

Many pages have "quick definitions" in boxes, so that readers don't have to interrupt their reading to looking up the meanings of specialized terms. Whenever a particular test or medical procedure is mentioned, contact sources are provided in the margins. Cross references are also provided when a subject is discussed elsewhere in the book.

Longevity shows "you how to develop your own personalized longevity program, one which takes into account your biochemical uniqueness and goals [and] help you develop an `owner's manual' for your body, allowing you to slow the aging process, to increase your life expectancy, your health span, and your quality of life." Readers interested in avoiding deteriorating health in their golden years will find it an essential reference.
