Book Description
Nelson's years in the West Indies as the young captain of the frigate HMS Boreas were an important period in the hero's life that both shaped and predicted his role as a major player on History's stage. Yet even the best Nelson biographies have not significantly explored that formative period. In this new study, by a retired navy admiral with a reputation as a Nelson author, we see critical elements of Nelson's character emerge, elements that carried him through his legendary actions at the Battles of the Nile, Copenhagen and Trafalgar. This analysis of unique leadership will appeal to a broad audience. A foreword by the well-known Nelson author Stephen Howarth and a collection of interesting woodcuts from a rare Nelson book, plus illustrations from the maritime museum in Greenwich, England enhance the text.

A bit dull but nonetheless very informative.......2003-06-14
There is a fashion among Nelson writers to pick a year or two in Nelson's life and then to write every known thing about him during that time. This is one of those books. Still, it reads well and contains a lot of information (even though it's detail-heavy). I recommend it, but not as strongly as the other new Nelson books out this year (Vincent, Hayward).

Guitar Encyclomedia is GREAT!.......2007-06-07
First of all, I've been playing for awhile. Got a closet full of method books that I lost interest in shortly after beginning them. It was different with Guitar Encyclomedia. Know up front that everything you need is in there! As mentioned by a previous reviewer, things do not proceed from page to page in the typical fashion (maybe that's why it worked for me). Instead, I find the scale, chord, arpeggio, etc. (or their substitution!!) as my play or practice dictates that I need them. As a result my playing ability has grown noticeably. So I guess I consider it more of a reference book than a method book. If you are a growing musician, I would say that this is the one book that you will come back to time and time again. Coming from me, that's saying alot!!
ABSOLUTELY the BEST!!!.......2007-05-28
I have been playing guitar for over 12 years, I have had GUITAR ENCYCLOMEDIA for a little over a year.... and within this past year I
have progressed immensely as a guitarist. I've had "other" instructional
books and they've all failed to keep my interest....front to back, packed
with absurdity......ultimately, just leaving me confused.
Never before has guitar and music made so much sense because of GUITAR ENCYCLOMEDIA! The author, Mike(maestro)Overly, is brilliant! I would (and I do) highly recommend that all guitarist own a copy of GUITAR ENCYCLOMEDIA!
Not at all impressed.......2007-01-08
I got this book directly from the publishers and must say how vastly overrated the whole thing is. There's nothing 'sequential' about the way it presents the information and the scale intervals seem to conflict with the other tone center patterns that I am familiar with. It tries to cross reference everything but you end up jumping all over the place chasing particular information. I think if you were starting from scratch this would be an ideal book but if you already know enough to be able to know how scales and chords are made up from other source material this book only serves to confuse. For the money, if you want to know about the CAGED system, I would recommend Fretboard Logic by Bill Edwards. It is less theoretical but far easier to follow than this. And, with all due respect to the other reviewers I suspect an unusual bias towards this product which is not the fountain of knowledge they make it out to be. At least not for me and a waste of money that could have been better spent.
Worth its weight in gold!!!!.......2005-12-18
I own hundreds of guitar books and if I could only keep one, this is the one I would keep. This a very unique book which takes the mystery out of guitar and clarifies musical concepts in a very understandable and methodical way. This book is like a Rosetta Stone for guitar. This is by far the best guitar book I have ever purchased.
Bottom line...get the book and the flashcards!.......2004-09-13
Guitar Encyclomedia and Fretboard Flashcards by Chris Bereznay - Music Gear Review (Cranberry Twp., PA)
Mike Overly has been teaching, performing and positively impacting the lives of guitarists for decades. If you visit the 12 Tone Music site ... and read his bio, it's enough to make you wonder if there's any hope for you if you didn't start in music at the wee toddler ages. It's this type of experience and background, though, that have gone into some of the finest instructional materials for the guitar that I've ever seen. What I'm talking about folks is the Guitar Encyclomedia and Fretboard Flashcards from Mike Overly and 12 Tone Music Publishing.
If you're like me, and probably a lot of other guitarists out there, you started playing and "kind-of" taught yourself by reading magazines, playing with others, listening to recordings, etc. You might have learned power chords first; maybe even learned alternate picking so that you could play those fast solos just like Eddie Van Halen. After a few months or even years, though, your skills began to flat-line. You ended up playing the same things over and over again because this is what you were comfortable with. If you're not like me, you're lucky. I've been playing for close to 20 years now and I probably 'flat-lined' years ago. Lately, though, I've taken a renewed interested in developing my skills and decided to start looking around for good sources on theory and fretboard skills.
While cruising the web a few weeks ago, I ran into an ad for the Guitar Encyclomedia by Mike Overly. To me, "encyclomedia" was denoting a complete guitar reference and that was exactly what I was looking for. Something I could refer to as I began to "teach myself" again the subtle and not so subtle nuances of guitar and theory. What I found when the packaged arrived, however, was not just a simple all-encompassing reference. What I found was a detailed and thorough series of adventures around the fretboard. Structured in lesson format, I began to embark on a new educational journey that would ultimately lead to many string changes for my brand new Strat.
You see I've always been the guy that took more pride in my creative abilities and the songs, chord progressions, riffs and licks that I would come up with, than with how many Led Zeppelin riffs I could memorize. The nice thing about the Guitar Encyclomedia, though, is that it can benefit both types of guitarists. Those that tend to be songwriters, though, ultimately stand to benefit far greater from this excellent reference. Those of you who fall into this category know who you are. How many times have you been working on a really cool chord progression and just can't seem to find the next chord to make the whole piece tie together? Frustrating, isn't it? After using these tools, my friends, you will never ask the question "What do I play the second time through this song?"
Mike Overly lays the foundation around what some refer to as the CAGED system. This is where the fundamental principles of guitar are taught around the 5 major chord forms that are movable all over the neck of the guitar. Mike often quips that all you ever needed to know is what you "learned at your first lesson"!
Probably one of the coolest features of the Guitar Encyclomedia is that it presents its material in four parts; CHORD - SCALE - ARPEGGIO - SONG. According to Mike Overly, "Theoretically, scales come first and from the letters and tones of the scale, chords and arpeggios are spelled (constructed). However, I've chosen to introduce chords first because we tend to hear the harmony (chords) of a song and then play a melody (scale) that fits the chords." I can attest that this approach works and is more effective than burying you in some theory that you can't relate anything to. The chord structures and forms that come first give you something to relate to and help to build your understanding of scales and arpeggios on top of them - leading finally to song structure.
One of my favorite activities while reviewing these products over the past several weeks has been to sit down and go through various sections of the Guitar Encyclomedia and write new songs based on some of the variations present. At the end of each major section in the book you'll find a song that highlights the information presented in the pages preceding it. This is extremely useful as it gives you an immediate opportunity to practice the skills you've learned. What I will do is make a quick recording, usually with an acoustic guitar, laying down rhythm tracks with the chords in the song. Then, once this recording is made, I'll go over the scales and arpeggios to enhance the impact that the material has just made. This has helped retention greatly.
In addition to the Guitar Encyclomedia, Music Gear Review also received the Guitar and Bass Fretboard Flashcards that 12 Tone Music offer. We received the guitar, 4 string and 5 string bass guitar versions and in addition to the material covered in the Guitar Encyclomedia, have been heavily utilizing these as well. The Flash cards are organized in a color-coded scheme and where on one side there is a string number and a letter. On the back of the card, the trainee has to correctly identify the fret that the letter on the front represents. In addition, the student can see a picture of the fretboard with the location of the letter clearly located for visualization purposes. For those of you studying how to read standard notation, don't fret ( no pun intended ), there's also staff notation! It's like a complete Fretboard map in a stack that's almost the same size as a deck of cards - which makes them portable too! My poor wife has been promoted to "teacher" and I've been bugging her a few times a week to test me on the flashcards. Clearly, Guitar Encyclomedia and Fretboard Flashcards are some of the finest instructional items we've seen here at Music Gear Review.
Bottom Line:
The simple truth is that the Guitar Encyclomedia and Guitar Fretboard Flashcards provide the learning guitarist with more than enough tools for the money. What is contained in these packages would take years upon years and hundreds if not thousands of dollars of guitar lessons to obtain. Depending on the teacher that you routinely visit, you may not even get some of this information. I would highly recommend these tools to anyone that's looking to improve their skills on the guitar. I would even recommend this to some guitar instructors so that they are careful not to miss any important topics when planning their lessons for their students. Mike Overly and 12 Tone Music Publishing have done a wonderful job at presenting the information. I also understand that in addition to the workbook mentioned above, there's also an audio CD, GEM Jam, that is in the works that will eventually accompanies Guitar EncycloMedia and a new book - Guitar Fretboard Facts - which presents 38 lessons that further illustrates ideas presented in the GEM.
In conclusion, I could have gone over every little detail of what is in the Guitar Encyclomedia. I didn't for a reason. I really think you need to browse your way over to www.12tonemusic.com and check out the information for yourself. There are FREE sample lessons from the book on the website so you'll really get a feel for the quality of the materials you'd be getting when you purchased the book and the flash cards. If you are committed to developing your skills, you owe it to yourself to get the book and the flashcards. For basically $65, you'll have a complete reference for guitar.

Book Description
In this extended prose poem--a text that reads as much as a work of art as important scholarship--Kurt H. Wolff has created a work of phenomenology that goes far beyond the typical methods of empirical social science to embrace field work as an extraordinary openness to being. Including personal letters to Wolff from Hannah Arendt and Hermann Bloch, the book portrays a fertile mind's reckoning with pre-phenomenal being in a way that dances between the realms of intellectual consideration and the surrender of will to the intoxication of lived experience.

A Great Resource for Music Theory!.......2005-01-06
I'm relatively new to the bass guitar, but have played trombone for about 30 years and never really learned any music theory because it seemed so abstract. Even recently, I've been discouraged in my bass lessons, as I didn't feel that I was gaining a deep understanding of Music Theory. After reading through the 45 pages or so last night, I feel like I'm well on my way to tying it all together. I've browsed through the remainder of the book, and believe that this will be a great resource in fulfilling my New Year's resolution to learn all my scales this year. A friend at work browsed through it and says that it is exactly what I need to take my bass playing to the next level. I highly recommend this book!
Boy, was I wrong!.......2004-01-13
I spent time with the Bass EncycloMedia and am very impressed!
As a professional bass player for over 30 years, I didn't think I had much to learn from the Bass EncycloMedia. Boy, was I wrong! This book is filled with practical and highly musical techniques and information that will benefit bass players who have passed beyond the "beginner" stage. The book is written the way most bass players think.....visually instead of in notation. This is a great addition to the library of bass players of any style and any ability level.
I would also highly recommend getting a set of Fretboard Flashcards for 4 or 5 string bass.

Wisdom you need!.......2003-07-28
Even if you are not dieting, it is an essential book to learn about the vitamin, minerals, foods that benefit your personal situation. I just wished it went deeper into each topic and was not so short. Definite quick read and valuable reference.
Well organized, excellent information.......2000-08-06
This book is not a step by step guide to balancing your diet. It focuses on giving background information on all of the nutrients that a person needs, as well as detailed information on deficiencies and excesses of many body-building elements. It goes into great detail and gives lists of foods that are high in important nutrients. Brief in length, but still a great reference and general knowledge book.

Who thought healthy cooking and cajun cooking could go together? The Junior League of Baton Rouge! Classic Louisiana cooking for our health-conscious age. This book features 700 recipes to help you trim the fat and calories, but not the taste. All recipes have nutritional analysis, including American Dietary Exchanges.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful recipe book!.......2004-05-09
This book was like a dream come true for me. The two previous River Roads Recipes books were my favorite cookbooks, but I was trying to cut back on the fat content that is usually so high in the Cajun & Creole cooking I grew up on. This book offered me the answers I was looking for.
Healthier Cooking.......2002-06-06
My husband --- like so many others--- is on a modified diet. This cookbook took already delicious recipes and modified them with the help of a licensed dietitian to fit our newly apdopted healthier lifestyle. The nutrition notes give ideas on how to cut the recipe even further plus lets you know what was your saving in calories, fat, salt... I like the sidebars stories; They add interest. I also like the "Something Extra" section at the end. The Curried Chicken Salad is a luncheon favorite at work.
Wonderful recipes, made healthier in River Road III.......2000-04-27
I guess I would give this book more like 4 1/2 stars. My fiance is from New Orleans and I wanted to serve more native dishes but in a healthier way. This book is just the ticket. The only thing I'd change is a few more of the "traditional" recipes but what is in there is very good with easy-to-follow directions. I especially like the way it shows you the difference between the original and lighter recipes. My future mother in law has used the book for years and really likes it. I can't wait to try more recipes.

Fantastic Book!.......2007-01-15
I love this book! It's the best of all of Lisa's books. She uses foil a lot in her projects, and the effect is gorgeous and glittery. There are also a variety of projects to decorate your home, jewelry, and even your car. At the end of each chapter is a section of tips from Lisa and other polymer clay artists. These little tips really help a lot.
SAVE YOUR MONEY.......2006-09-26
If you like to create boring items like, a clay covered pen, or fork and spoon, a clay framed license plate cover, this is the book for you!
Not only are the items dumb and boring, but she expects you to run out and buy all the extra products just to make one. Nice of her huh?
My favorite of all of Lisa's books........2006-03-31
I really love the funky and sophisticated projects offerred in this book. Lisa's classy fashion style is really what makes this book special. I recommend all of her books to my students but this one is just filled front to back with really cool and stylish projects. Another nice touch was the gallery filled with several variations on most projects. It really is amazing how just a color scheme change can make over a project.
Kudos Lisa!!!
Superb!.......2005-11-16
Lisa has knocked another one out of the ball park. I can't believe how great these projects are while being so easy. I expected them to be simplistic, but I am pleased with the level of sophistication in the projects even though they're easy to make. I've already made several from the book and Lisa's trademark style of simple, clear instructions, along with lots of great pictures is making it hard for me to make time to do anything else since buying it. Lisa's first book got me started and all of the tips she includes has made it easy for me to become a seasoned clayer. I loved her second book as much as the first and was hopeful her latest offering would do the same. It exceeded my expectations. I can't wait for the next one and her DVD. Lisa, you have a fan for life!

Good PC Book!.......2005-10-26
I bought this book for my husband (who is new to polymer clay) and me (I've been "claying" for years). It has lots of great tips. The directions are easy to understand and the pictures are excellent.
Customer Reviews:
Very outdated method........2007-03-08
Good book but it's outdated. This book uses a method that nobody uses anymore. Google for "the PF tek" to learn the easiest way to grow mushrooms with good yield and for cheap using readily available materials like brown rice, distilled water and jars, without the need for a pressure cooker.
There are better methods like spawning to horse manure, casing with Miracle Grow Moisture Control and so forth. You can find more info on The Shroomery (google it) forums.
well for begin.......2005-08-23
it's a good book for people who want to know the simplest method for growing the mushrooms. it's only dedicate to Stropharia cubensis.
Excellent mycelogical information in the field of growing.......2003-09-05
This is the most authoritave, reliable, and safe technique available today, not to mention the economical feasibility. Wether your a scholar studying the pharmacological and cross-culture use of hallucinogens, or a 18 year old, this book explains the process of growing mycelium with potent psilocybin in easy to follow steps with descriptive pictures. The toxicity of psilocybin, the main alkaloid in the psychedelic mushroom also known as Stropharia Cubensis (this books goes by that strain) is 200, that is L.D. 200 in other words, 200 times the effective dose approaches toxicity, So in other words, in pharmacological terms, these substances are harmless, since you cant even ingest that much. This book does state that in fairly technical terms, in a section separate from the main. Mushroom use in ancient civilizations has been in use for thousands of years, the knowledge, unparalleled in the sense of human understanding upon subjects which otherwise with go without. What psychedelics ultimately do is they dissolve boundaries, and in the presence of dissolved boundaries, one cannot continue to close ones eyes to the ruination of the earth, positing of the seas, and 2000 years of unchallenged dominator culture, based on monotheism, hatred of nature, suppression of the female, so forth and so on. You have a godlike understanding to learn and assimilate new information, the kind of experience you have when looking over a landscape from the air, when previously only viewed from the ground. This book while eloquently outlining this in the introduction primarily focuses on growing the mycelium, in which it does flawlessly. In the process of growing mycelium, you have to have very sterile conditions, and this book stresses contamination, while other books don't emphasize that, which I find a problem. While this book gives you a list of tools, which are easily bought in any town or on the internet for a reasonable low price (Excluding the pressure cooker) it also gives you a sense of understanding for the process as a whole, which gives this process specifically a tint of art, because it is, in and of itself an art. It would be recommended to have at least a college level of English, and college level chemistry wouldn't hurt as well. These substances can show you what has never been seen before, and never will be seen by any human ever again. Our culture is in a ridiculous position in relation with these substances, and in reading this book one becomes more familiar to the properties and uses, preparation and dosage alike, so one doesn't have a culturally sanctioned basises toward something which he/she had no prior knowledge. This book, written by Terence & Dennis McKenna, however written under the name Oss and Oeric, are the foremost spokesperson's for the psychedelic experience, among other things, and are literary geniuses (in the purest definition) whose knowledge is unparalleled as well. If your interested more on the fascinating subject of psychedelics, Refer to Terence McKenna's Food of the Gods, Invisible Landscape, Archaic Revival; Rupert Sheldrake, Ralph Abraham, Ralph Metzner, Gordon Wasson, Albert Hoffman, Peter Furst, Aldoux Huxley, William Blake, Roger Heim, A Hoffer, H Osmund, Mircea Eliade, Richard E. Shultes, Dennis Mckenna, Snyder Solomon, Michael Harner, Marlene Dobkin, David Aberle, im sure there are many many others however those are some of my favorites.
Outdate; a book for collectors though!.......2000-03-28
Times have changed and methods have gotten about a hundredtimes easier than is presented in this book. Never-the-less I stillhold my own original printing copy of this book dear to my heart. END
Wow Dude!.......2000-02-23
dude, i thout the book was soo cool. sory if im not spelling good right now - i'm high if you no what i mean! i recommend the book to anybody who's a nobody...like myself! I made lots of cash with the awesum teknikes they gave on growing!

Fatherhood encompases more than just the first years of life.......2000-09-20
I had purchased this book for my husband to assist him in his new role as step-father to my eleven-year-old. Of course, I read the book first to ensure that the book provided solid advice. The book provides basic and a few creative tips for the expectant or new father and may help give them peace-of-mind. I was disappointed that the author did not cover the topic of step-fatherhood and that the book concentrated on parenting the infant and toddler years. At the tail end of the book, the author barely touches upon the school-age, pre-teen and teenage years. When added together, less than 1/4 of the book covers parenting these age groups. The advice provided for fathers of older children was little more than basic common sense. I decided not to give this book to my husband and instead will give it to his brother who's wife will be delivering their first child in November. As a step-father to an older child, my husband would not benefit from this book.
