Book Description
Here, from two of the United Kingdom's finest naval historians, is an immensely human portrait of Horatio Nelson, the most brilliant and most honored naval leader Britain has ever known. A great seaman and tactician who possessed an extraordinary ability to inspire respect and devotion, Nelson was a myriad of contradictions - humble yet ambitious, kind but at times petulant, exceptionally charming but often vain and self-pitying, unswerving in his sense of professional duty yet involved in a scandalous love affair. The Howarths have captured not only the man but his time, evoking a remarkable sense of what it was like to sail the seas in Nelson's day, in peace and in war. The great battles of St. Vincent, the Nile, and Copenhagen spring to life, as do the achievements of the British blockading fleet off the French coast in the months and years before the victory at Trafalgar - a victory so decisive and devastating that it put an end to war at sea for a century. This penetrating biography brings us closer than ever before to an understanding of one of England's most revered heroes, who even during his lifetime secured an enduring place in the hearts of an entire nation. (53/4 X 9, 408 pages, b&w photos)
Customer Reviews:
A superb read.......2006-09-30
'Written by two of the UK's finest naval historians' (from the back cover), the authors managed to create, at least in this readers mind, an almost palpable taste of cordite in the back of the throat and a recoil from the bloodstained decks of England's pride and joy. Howarth excels in explaining Nelson's naval strategy and does not fail to execute with a superbly delicate touch' an illustration of Nelson's troubled domestic life. The failure of Great Britain to honour the family of its hero is well documented and is nothing but an everlasting national disgrace.
This is a ripping good read, beautifully written. The book exudes oak and pitch, blood and sweat in glorious detail. Not missed are petticoats and carriages and a depiction of 'Emma' that is at times both tender and analytical. Occasionally I got the feeling Howarth would have made a great 'Hardy' to Nelson, carefully navigating the 90 gun 'Perspective'.
Wonderful !
One of the better modern biographies of Lord Nelson.......2000-06-03
There have been three biographies of Nelson written in the past few years that are worth reading; Tom Pocock's, Christopher Hibbert's, and this one by the Howarths. Pocock's is in many ways the most enjoyable to read, Hibbert's has some new information, but "Nelson: The Immortal Memory" is my own favorite and a good selection for someone just beginning to find out about the contradictory, fascinating man who was unquestionably the greatest fighting admiral who ever lived and whose memory lives on in the modern Royal Navy.

Book Description
William James was one of the most remarkable intellectuals of his day—an influential philosopher and psychologist who was also a charismatic teacher, groundbreaking scholar, and widely admired public figure. William James Remembered brings together the reminiscences of James by family members, friends, and colleagues. The result is a many-sided portrait of a man who, besides playing a crucial role in American life during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, remains an animating spirit in our own time.

Packed with tips on every aspect of baby's physical, emotional, and social development, this friendly guide gives parents advice on such important topics as breastfeeding vs. bottle-feeding, teething, baby toy safety, food preparation, food allergies, traveling, and much more.
Customer Reviews:
Great book--until the baby comes.......2007-08-07
I also bought this book while I was pregnant. While the information on when to call the doctor, how to diaper, bathe, feed, etc., was useful, once my baby was born, I found some of the advice unrealistic. The advice on "sleep training," for instance, struck me as inhumane. Also, the emphasis on milestones can cause one to forget to enjoy their child as they are. After my daughter was born, I hardly used it at all.
Very informative.......2006-06-02
Believe it or not, but I bought this book from amazon even before I got pregnant for 1st time. I wanted to know what to expect before I become a mother. The book is very well structured, informative and covers everything. It would be easy to find anything you need in an emergency. After reading it I've got a good feeling that I can handle everything about babies as far as books like this exist and can be at hand. Thank you, authors.
So informative..........2005-08-25
As an expectant mother, I had exhausted all the info on pregnancy and wanted to learn as much as I could - while I still had some free time - on what to expect during our baby's first year. This book proved to be an invaluable resource on everything from breastfeeding to bathing to baby poop and beyond! I know I will refer to it often after our baby arrives, and I recommend it highly for expectant and new parents alike.

The whole book.......2007-07-13
This is a small book. It will make a nice gift for someone with a casual interest in barbecue. It covers the basics with a few recipes to impress ones guests. However it will surely be a disappointment to a serious chef.
black book.......2007-01-15
I actually bought this as a gift for my husband who is a marvelous cook. We both sat down and looked it over and decided that it is a wonderful little tool that gives many different types of recipes that he'll be trying. We especially like the sprial bound and elastic strap, as those are 2 things that attracted me to buying the book. Most of the recipes are simple and easy, which is what we like when we BBQ.
lip-smackin' delicious.......2004-09-17
This summer, I threw a party for a friend who is a successful country-western musician. I needed new barbecue-with-a-twist ideas, and this little book made a big difference. Enjoyed all the fun ideas!

Book Description
The philosophy of holism is to work with nature's principles and look at the whole. This book explains how holism can benefit the health and welfare of dogs. Written for the lay reader, it covers the dog's evolution, its general management and psychology, common ailments, and their treatment with holistic therapies.
Customer Reviews:
The holistic management of dogs.......2001-08-24
A good overview. I had quite a lot of holes in my knowledge about how to integrate conventional and holistic feeding and medicine and this book filled them. It takes away the mystery which often surrounds so-called alternative approaches and gave me confidence to manage my dog in the way that I wish to. It is objective and well balanced and is not trying to sell either products or services. It brings back common sense to nutrition and medicine.
The holistic management of dogs.......2001-05-30
This book covers evolution, mans relationship with the dog, some common breeds, general management and psychology, together with common ailments and their treatment with holistic therapies such as homoeopathy, herbal medicine, and nutritional therapy. The book is a good overview of the subject of holistic management and is written for the dog owner without specialist knowledge. I found it an excellent introduction to the subject and the section on potential problems arising from commercial feedingstuffs was particularly illuminating. I can now discuss treatment of my dog with my veterinarian from an informed position as well as feed him with confidence on an holistic diet which I have formulated from information given.
Disappointing.......2000-07-05
At least half of this rather thin but costly book consists of general information about canine evolution, common dog breeds, physiology of the dog, selecting a puppy, housetraining, etc. The chapter on holistic feeding provides only very basic information that does not enable readers to create a balanced homemade diet for their dogs, and the sections on homeopathy, herbal medicine, acupuncture, and physiotherapy serve as little more than a brief introduction to these holistic therapies. Finally there is a short (15 pages) A-Z guide to the holistic treatment of some common canine ailments.
There are far more comprehensive (and less expensive) books on natural dog rearing available.

Fantastic reference.......1997-10-23
For anybody interested in making metal handplanes, this book gives complete directions. Including, history, technique, materials, etc. Beautiful color photos of the authors handiwork too.
Customer Reviews:
Great book about real woodworking machines, not shop jigs.......1998-12-22
Don't let the rather crude looking sam on the cover fool you. This book has some great ideas from two different table saws to a jointer and even some ideas on shaper knives. The part I liked most was that the instructions had just the right amount of detail to cover the rough spots but left the rest up to you, it is after all going to be your tool. Also for the price its hard to go wrong.

Book Description
Harry Potter has captivated the imagination of millions of children. And Harry Potter has caused controversy in churches and schools. What's a parent to do with the magical, mystical world of Harry and his friends?Gina Burkart chose to read the books with her own children. As they read together, she discovered many parallels between Christian faith and the themes of these books. Indeed, the escapades of Harry Potter sparked significant conversation between Burkart and her kids.In this helpful, entertaining guide, Burkart shows how Harry Potter fits into the tradition of fairy tale writing and how this type of literature aids in building a moral framework. She highlights specific situations and emotions from Harry's world that children face in their own life, such as fear, anger, bullies, diversity and the choice of good over evil.Instead of magic words or easy answers, Burkart offers solid, practical advice for helping parents and children navigate Harry Potter's world--and our own--together.
Customer Reviews:
A great book for parents of new Harry Potter readers!.......2006-05-25
After recently reading my first Harry Potter book, I picked up A Parent's Guide To Harry Potter as a supplement to what I had read. I was impressed with the easy approach Ms. Burkart gives to the series. The simple tips for translating events in the book into real life situations were very valuable. This book is a must-read for anyone just beginning their journey into Harry Potter!
Connect with Your Children.......2005-11-20
When I began reading Harry Potter with my children, I was amazed at the discussions that emerged. I found my children relating to Harry and opening up about many issues they face every day. Our conversations began with the book but quickly leapt to much deeper discussions about fear, love, anger, bullying, prejudice, hate. Our Christian faith always entered as a model for decision making and acting. The christian parallel of love that runs through the entire Harry Potter series often ignites these Christian connections.
I wrote this book so that other parents would get a chance to experience these discussions. I wanted parents who are leary to see the potential of reading these books with their children. In A Parent's Guide to Harry Potter, I explain how Harry Potter fits into the fairy tale genre and how fairy tales often help children release their fears. Additionally, I pull out some of the real issues in Harry Potter and provide sample questions that could be used to begin discussions. Most importantly, I show parents that these books aren't about magic at all, rather they show that magic does not solve problems. It is love that saves snd protects Harry. It is love that continues to help him prevail in the battle of good and evil--not magic.
Great for all parents!.......2005-11-12
I picked up this book to try and figure out why there is a controversy surrounding Harry Potter. I found it very well written, to the point, and a major resource for parents who are looking for a guide to talk about all literature with their children. Yes, there is a Christian slant to the book, but if you are not Christian many of the discussion points about good v. evil, love, overcoming conflict, etc - are relevant to everyone's lives.
Excellent Resource for Parents.......2005-08-29
Finally! Here is an excellent resource parents can use to explore and ENJOY the wealth of important topics their children are engaging in Harry Potter. The questions in each chapter make it easy to go from reading together to discussing thoughts, feelings, aversion of evil and aspirations toward goodness. Easy to read, easy to use, solidly academic and carefully considered by a sincere Christian parent. This book can enrich families of faith and those for whom faith is not the central issue.
Well written, easy to read.......2005-07-17
This is a very well written, easy to read book with very helpful insights. Including questions that lead to constructive, faithful discussions with children about the Harry Potter series books. I highly recommend this book to anyone with children.
Book Description
As Lord Voldemort's Attack of Harry Potter left a scar on his forehead, many parents and educators are concerned that reading about the life and times of Harry Potter may scare our children's minds.
The Harry Potter phenomenon has just begun and it is here to stay. With it has come the onslaught of gifts, goblins, gimmicks and gadgetry, which are the inevitable by-product of a literary, hit.
There is a legitimate concern expressed by many parents and educators about the negative impact, which could flow from misguided interpretations of J. K. Roelings' magnificent creation.
The fear is that the specter of witchcraft and terrible, scary creatures may now invade the world of children's entertainment and commercial exploitation of that aspect will override the positive values of the stories in the nurturing of young minds.
It does not have to be so. This text is designed for concerned parents and educators. It shows how to use the vivid experiences of Harry Potter and your own as models for leadership, team building, courage, the prevalence of good over evil and discovering the wonder and genius of the inner self.
Included is a free set of magical behavioral and personality identification communication cards.
Customer Reviews:
An invaluable tool........2007-09-23
Character Education, The Legacy of Harry Potter, is an excellent text. It allows teachers, parents and others, regardless of age, to see the essence of the powerful story of the adventures of Harry Potter. The Potter texts may be utilized as a practical & positive behavioral change model. Unlike the dozens of other books about Harry Potter, hands-on exercises are given for developing the "wonder and genius of the inner self" through Harry's and friends Winning Colors.
Unfortunately, the present sole review by "dr_helt" seems to show little understanding of the text's practical application using behavioral modification and bringing up behaviors that are crucial for the situation as a basic strategy for successful communication.
In my capacity as Leadership Development Chair of the Pacific Northwest District of Optimist International I have used this innovative model, based on the laws of attraction, consistently over the years in the training of Club and District Officers with great success.
From concrete, hands-on expeience over the past years, I give Character Education, The Legacy of Harry Potter a 5 star rating as a model for stategies resulting in behavioral change as so cleverly put forth in story book form by J.K. Rowling in the Harry Potter series.

Buyer Beware!.......2002-04-06
I purchased this book to help me develop lesson plans to use when I teach "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" in a classroom setting. Much to my surprise, I realized upon purchasing this text that it has almost NOTHING to do with the text of Rowling's book (despite the promotional marketing information available on amazon.com and on the book's back cover). In fact, this is a poorly thought-out attempt at character "education" that is of dubious pedagogical quality. And, at nearly $[money], the price is an absurd one to pay for this book's mundane and uninspired content. Buyer Beware!

Book Description
'The tide spreads a mantle of silk Around the Great Blasket Island' So wrote Micheal O'Guiheen of his beloved island home. But by 1953 the authorities had evacuated the Great Blasket and its traditions were vanishing. Micheal O'Guiheen, 'the Poet' of the book, was the son of Peig Sayers, who wrote 'An Old Woman's Reflections'. But while that was a celebration of the good times, and her son's schoolmate Maurice O'Sullivan's 'Twenty Years A-Growing' was a book of laughing youth, this takes the story to sombre middle age. It tells of sunny times clouded over only by unconscious intimations of mortality, not only of youth but also of an irreplaceable culture: the consternation caused by a passing comet, the drudgery of a turf-gathering expedition turning into a carefree rabbit hunt. This first and only English edition of O'Guiheen's 'cri de coeur' is supplemented by translations, from the author's own poetry, previously only available in the original. The Blasket Islands are three miles off Ireland's Dingle Peninsular. Until their evacuation just after the Second World War, the lives of the 150 or so Blasket Islanders had remained unchanged for centuries. A rich oral tradition of story-telling, poetry, and folktales kept alive the legends and history of the islands, and has made tier literature famous throughout the world. The seven Blasket Island books published by OUP contain memoirs and reminiscences from within this literary tradition, evoking a way of life which has now vanished.

Pity Youth Does Not Last.......2007-10-06
It has been years since I read this book, yet it keeps coming to mind. The author's use of language is exquisite and touching. It is a tale of life in a time and place that can never be replicated. I have never seen the Blasket Islands, nor known anyone from there, yet I feel that I have been there and experienced it as fully as if I lived there in the islands' zenith, which, like the youth referred to in the title, surely could not last in the modern world.
