Old Ugly Hill is a great survivors story of the give and take war so typified in Korea. One can only imagine the frustration of having to sieze a seemingly useless hill only to lose it to the Red Chinese days later and then have to re-assault it again! This is a great story told in a welcome fireside chat manner the way Grandpa did.

Sit on uncle Rudy's knee and hear stories about Old Baldy.......1999-04-29

Mr. Stevens's Book has such an innocent ring to it. Acknowledging he was just a small part of the big picture, he wrote this book at the urging of his children and grandchildren. The book reads as if you were a wide eyed, sniffeling little urchin sitting on Mr. Steven's lap as he shares his whole military experience with you...

".the train went by a big mountain in Washington with alot of snow on it. They call that mounatin Mt. Rainier. ..on my first patrol I fell asleep and was shaken awake by my own sargeant!..on another patrol trying to get a prisoner so we could R&R in Japan, we managed to capture an enemy soldier sleeping against a tree...only to find he had been dead for a week!"

Its not all fun, games and bedside tales in this book. One patrol that suffered 11 casualties left the author wondering 'if the military brass had enough sense to get out of bed without breaking a leg.' Stevens also refers to the fragging of an unpopular Colonel 'Ortega'(the name is fictitious) with two sticks of dynamite under his bunk. Like many other Korean War vets, he feels the blood shed over nameless ridges--Old Baldy, in this case--was senseless. The terrain they could survey from the top of old baldy could easily be searched by spotter plane.

Despite some sour spots--the author speaks unkindly about the performance of 'a platoon of Puerto Ricans'-- this is a good story. Not a cuss nor swear word to be found. As a sense of gloom and forebodeing swept the troops going across the sea of Japan from Sasebo to Pusan, the author glumly reports that "there sure was a sense that the SHIP soon was gonna hit the SAND."

Bad science.......2005-04-19

The author is guilty of repeating a lot of bad science. The is ABSOLUTELY no difference between table salt and sea salt as far as the body is concerned. The same goes for natural vs artificial MSG, which is recognized as "generally safe" by the FDA.

I imagine a lot of people have taken to using sea salt on this bad advice. It's just as likely to give you a stroke or heart attack!

Anne Louise Gittleman provides helpful tips on how to become a better and more healthier person. With 501 ways to get harmful salt and sodium out of any diet, this book was very informative, supplying and in-depth look into the affects that both salt and sodium have on the body. If your concerend with what salt can do to your body, this book sure helps. Gittleman covers all areas that invlove salt, from refining it, how the body uses it,to how much the body should consume. Salt and sodum can be the source of many illnesses from headaches to hypertension. The thing that I liked about the book was that it alerted the reader to hidden sources of sodium and that it suggested the reasonable amounts of sodium and salt that should be consumed daily.
Also, this book did not leave the reader at a loss of what to do with the information they just recieved. Gittleman offers numerous tips and low-sodium or sodium free recepies that can be used to make a healthier diet for those in need of a change. Another great aspect to this book was that if your really interested in changing your diet,but you don't know where to find the foods that are suggested, a resources section is included, with names of and numbers to the stores that supply what you need. So, if it is change that your looking for, do it with "Get the Salt Out."

Impressive, Thorough Little Book.......2003-05-24

"Get the Salt Out" does indeed contain 501 numbered suggestiond for cutting salt from your diet. A number of these suggestions overlap, but I was impressed by the thoroughness of the book. I have high blood pressure and have been on a low-salt diet for years; however, this book alerted me to many hidden sources of sodium, such as baking soda and packaged cereals. The book is split into sections, such as getting the salt out of cooking, finding good low-salt fast food, and low-salt sauces. The author even points out that licking postage stamps adds sodium to your diet! That's thoroughness!

The book also contains a number of low-salt recipes scattered throughout (at least 50). In addition, Gittleman discusses the various types of salt/sodium and gives recommendations about how to avoid unnecessary processed sodium in favor of healthier (and tastier) natural salt. The author gives numerous suggestions about low-sodium products that can be purchased in stores or on-line. I have a number of low-salt cookbooks, but this book is the best in combining recipes with solid suggestions. A real winner, and I look forward to using these suggestions to further reduce my sodium intake.

I picked up this book for my Dad who was just diagnosed with high blood pressure. My Dad is not following the doctor's orders and so I am trying to help him out a little. He actually liked this book and is having my mother make the recipes. That's quite a feat for any writer to accomplish with my father.

This book was so easy to read and follow that I did not feel that I was on a restricted diet. The book identified lots of hidden sources of salt that I had no idea existed and made me feel that I was in safe hands following the author's advice.

Extremely Interesting.......2006-03-19

I stumbled upon this book when I was visiting Mt. Vernon for the first time a few years ago. It looked so interesting I had to purchase it. Even though this is a cookbook, it's very unique with a lot of additional material that explains cooking and the recipes from the time period that the book was written. I'm more of a history buff than a cook, but I really, really enjoyed it.

one of the best historical cookbooks ever.......2002-12-16

This book is a jewel. Being a 16th-17th century reenactor, I would not have thought that Martha Washington's cookbook would have become such a favorite of mine. The annotations by Karen Hess make it invaluable to anyone interested in historical cookery from the Elizabethan age onwards, and it is a darned good read, informative and fun even if you aren't. This is the book I will give someone who thinks they might possibly be vaguely interested in historical cookery and would like to learn more. It is very well-researched and there is something to learn on every page. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

I love the patterns in this book. Great color schemes! I thought it was very easy tracing these patterns onto fusible web, adhering to fabric, and then placing on my quilt top. I made a 50" x 50" quilt in a weekend utilizing 14 of the butterfly designs, and everyone that saw it raved.

Why five stars: cause it's a nice book for those that know wall street without really understanding how it works (so great title). Still it is soft but the content is rather strong, not too boring, short and the p[resentation is very good. Built aroud lots of questions-answers, that might interest a very large public.

"How Wall Street Works" by David Logan Scott is so simply written that even a novice can be assured of acquiring a basic and clear understanding of the world of finance. The question and answer format gives brief and concise explanations without the clutter of the usual confusing and unnecessary jargon. I particularly appreciated the analogies to common-day experiences and the "bottom line" style summaries at the beginning and not the end of the chapters. This book can easily be read and digested in a couple of hours or less. A worthwhile expenditure of your time.

What makes this book stand out from others is the author's melding of anthropology and theology into business ethics. Fort brings together a remarkable number of scholars' works to open a discussion about the potential of businesses to engender desirable attitudes and behaviors such as nurturing, empathy, solidarity, and compassion.

I believe this book will be especially interesting to liberal arts types who have entered business later through, for example, MBA programs, and want a literate and intelligent approach to business ethics, rather than trendy pop-business books. That being said, while the book is intellectually rigorous and raises fascinating ideas about how to approach ethics, it is also very readable. I teach business ethics to MBA students, and I know they will be very interested in the ideas Fort has presented here.

In a field where there are not very many excellent treatises, this is one that I heartily recommend.

The recent history associated with the name "Arthur Andersen" might cause one to steer clear of this resource, but that would be a big mistake.

The Internal Revenue Service has made significant changes to regulations affecting nonprofits, shifting responsibility for compliance from the organization itself to the directors, staffs, and major donors as individuals. Most nonprofit board members and executives are only dimly aware of these changes, and fewer still are prepared with the documentation necessary to address issues of conflict of interest, private inurement, and disqualified persons.

One sentence from the book's introduction sums up the need for action: "The most important aspect of this legislation is that it empowers the IRS to impose punishment on individuals who violate the tax code by levying significant excise taxes initially and then more than quadrupling the penalty amount if remedy is not made to the [nonprofit] organization."

Worth the Time.......2004-07-22

"Great Classical Composers" is nearly seven hours in length, but you'll find the time well spent if you are interested in classical music. Beginning with Bach in the 17th century and ending at the dawn of the 20th with Verdi, Strauss and Tchaikovsky, the tapes cover over two hundred years and arguably the greatest composers who ever lived.

The stories are a combination of narraration, actors reading quotes from the composers, and excerpts from some of their most famous compositions. You will hear Handel's "Messiah," Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro," Beethoven's 5th and 9th Symphonies, Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" and much more. In addition, you will also learn the stories behind the works, often revealing details not commonly known.

Overall, this was a very good program. There was a slight echo when some actors were quoting the composers, but this does not detract much from the overall excellence of the production.

Four stars. Good stuff!
