A Grandson's Perspective.......2000-03-30
Carl Andrew Brannen died the year I turned 18. The same age he was when he began his journey through the Marine Corps, into France and back home to Trinity County, Texas. I have visited his battlefields several times and have used "Over There" as a field reference guide. In the summer of 1999 I stood in the Soissons battlefield with my 4 children as they lay in the same road in about the same place their great grandfather clutched the earth for a dozen hours or so waiting for the German counter attack or darkness or death which ever came first. He with a couple of dozen Marines were all that stood between the German line of defense and the rear echelon for most of that fateful day. I read his account out loud to them as we walked down the road and know that it brought insight and meaning to them as it would any American. Knowing that there are thousands of decendants of war veterans with stories untold, I highly recommend this book as a way to begin your own personal journey to discover the trail, Washed with Tears, as my Uncle Joeseph Patrick Brannen, C.A.Brannen's son, and one of the authors of this book, might say. C.A. Brannen's point of reference for his experiences was that of his uncle Eaph Dial, a Civil War veteran of Hood's Texas Brigade, who from 1862 to 1865 fought in most every major engagement his brigade was a part of. Like Eaph Dial, my grandfather was also a part of every action the 2nd Division participated in between June of 1918 and the end of the war. His war decorations include 5 battle stars all of which are featured in this book. C.A.Brannen's dash across no man's land at Soisson's and Blanc Mont Ridge was often described to me as child listening with great awe, as similar to the Confederate attacks at Gettysburg. There is a bit of every American in his story and ought to be read. It is a quick read, complete with historical research to confirm his accounts and is perfectly suitable for readers of every age.
Diary of Young Man Going into War.......1999-12-23
When America declared war in 1917, Carl A. Brannen was an 18-year-old freshman at Texas A&M. He finished out the fall semester of his sophomore year and then enlisted in the Marine Corps in January 1918, reporting for boot camp in February. Immediately upon graduation, he was shipped overseas to France to join the American Expeditionary Force under Gen John Pershing's command. After more training in Europe, he moved to the "front" to join the 6th Marine Regiment under the Army's 2d Division as a replacement for marines killed in the first 48 hours of the battle of Belleau Wood. Brannen kept a very good diary. We discover that he is not a heroic figure-just a marine trying to stay alive. He knows that a foxhole or trench is a valuable piece of real estate in face of murderous machine gun fire. Brannen understands and appreciates the difference between his gas mask and those the French have (they are better), so he watches for a spare one. He knows what hunger is and how much a hot meal means, when he can get one. He also knows what thirst is and how uncertain resupply is in a combat situation. Brannen quickly learns the difference in the sound of the explosion of a gas, shrapnel, or high-explosive shell. He stayed in Belleau Wood until it was captured on the first of July, a great morale victory for all the Allied armies. Brannen wasn't relieved until 16 July 1918. Instead of receiving a period of rest and recovery, he and his fellow marines were trucked to the battle area of Soissons, where he participated in an advance led by tanks. The Germans countered the attack with near-point-blank artillery, killing Brannen's best friend. It took only 40 minutes for his regiment to be nearly annihilated. Brannen, however, is a survivor. He participated in battles in Saint-Mihiel, Mont Blanc, and the Meuse-Argonne. Following the armistice, as a member of the 2d Division, his unit became part of the Army of Occupation. Pershing kept the army sharp by means of a rigorous postwar training program. Brannen writes about how morale plummeted in this situation since most soldiers only wanted to return home. Just when Brannen began to feel down, he was selected to join the ranks of a regiment referred to as Pershing's Own. He had fought with the 4th Marine Brigade in every major battle and had survived-a claim few people could make. The 6th Regiment, composed of three thousand men, suffered 1,161 killed and over 4,656 wounded for total casualties of 5,817.
Over There is a very moving book. Brannen, who knows he was lucky to survive, is a quiet man in a heroic way. If it were not for his son and some dedicated scholars, the papers, photographs, and diary entries that tell his story would have been lost. This book, together with Robert Asprey's At Belleau Wood, provides a poignant reminder of just how terrible war really is.
Excellent view from the perspective of the trenches.......1999-10-27
These memoirs have been quoted in Toland's book on WWI and now in Farwell's book. It was good to go to the source because of the writing of the Carl A. Brannen, the editorial comments from the editors, and then the addition of the excellent view of the son in 1990. This should be a must read for every Marine and for anyone who wants to know about war.
80th Company, 6th Marines, 4th Marine Bde, 2nd Division........1997-12-08
Private Brannen's memoirs, written some twenty later, are fragmentary and somewhat impressionistic, but impart well the combat experience of the World War One Marine, from Belleau Wood, St. Mihiel, and Soissons, to the Meuse-Argonne.
His recollections, accompanied by period photographs, are expertly annotated to provide necessary historical context and perspective, and further expanded by Brannen's son, who visited the scenes of combat in the 1990's and added new photos of those famous battlefields. This is a valuable addition to the history of World War I, and will be of special interest to students of the Marine Corps.

Book Description
In Decadence of the French Nietzsche author James Brusseau describes how and why French Nietzscheanism is contorting into decadence where philosophy is dedicated to the intensification of thought and the degradation of stolid truth.
Customer Reviews:
Not a philosophy book!.......2006-10-06
For Ned: No matter how excited you seem to be about this "truth for thinking" instead of "thinking for truth", anyone getting behind it is just making a basic mistake, that it is not philosophy. That is what makes me most mad about this book. It makes a big argument but that does not mean it's a philsophical argument. I could deduce the unified field theory and that would, I suppose, be very important but that does NOT mean I've made a contribution to philosophy or done something valuable for philosophers. Therefore if you want to stop people from haranguing you about it, just produce the simple and right response. If someone asserts that the best philosophical truth is just the one that provokes more thought and nothing else, well, that might be, but it's definitely not philosophy. It looks like it is but it's not. I don't know how to make this any clearer. This gets five stars as a book, and perhaps its one of the few reasonably deserving them, but not as a philosophy book. R
Meticulous and Original Book.......2006-07-08
This book by Brusseau is one of the most refreshing that I've encountered on the topic. He deftly seperates the more perspicacious 'French Nietzscheans' such as Deleuze and Foucault from the somewhat less substantial ones (Barthes, Lyotard).
A very thought-provocative book (although I'm only a quarter of the way through)
II.......2005-02-10
Several chapters of this book have been circulating by e-mail for some time now and causing a minor commotion in the UK and Spain, and apparently also in Italy. In the parts I've seen, Brousseau maintains that it doesn't matter whether a particular proposed truth happens to be right or wrong, only whether it sytimulates more thought. As Brousseau puts it, you don't think to reach truth, you have truths to provoke thought. Interjecting a stylistic criticism, his articulation is repeated somewhat too often (in one or another variation, e.g.: The reason we do philosophy is to think, and results only have value insofar as they impel still more thought.). But what Brousseau does quite well is engage his argument as a nifty response to current attacks on Postmodernism (he doesn't dispute them but delineates their consequences for philosophy thereby outlining a sort of "after French Nietzscheansim"). Brousseau does remind us that the notion of philosophy as wanting truth is dated (the profession's rewards are reserved for those whose ideas stimulate the most debate, not those whose ideas are verified). Most notably his proposition that there exists a kind of counter history of philosophy that has valued thought all along is legitimately intriguing. It's further worth noting that Brousseau somewhat dramatically achieves, if that word is permissible here, the end of truth insofar as endeavors to weaken it (Vattimo) or make it more interpretive are replaced by simple disregard for the truth of any truth. While this reader withholds judgment for the moment, it certainly will be interesting to see whether the ideas get the same amount of (perhaps too) devoted attention now that they are no longer quite so subterranean.

The Launching Years--a must-read for parents coping with the two-year transition from high school to college--is an insightful and lively tour of the bumpy road involving college applications, senioritis, freshman freedom, and parent/child separation anxiety. "Launching a child into college can feel as if it's one of our last hands-on parenting acts," explain authors Laura Kastner and Jennifer Wyatt.
The beauty of this book's approach is two-fold: First it opens a window onto the world of young people leaving home, exploring application procrastination, senioritis, college choice, ambivalence about independence, and freshman freak-outs. At the same time, it holds up a mirror to parents, to help them discover deeper truths about themselves with--and without--their children. For example, one section about college applications advises parents to consider the college decision as one involving their child's identity rather than their own and to make sure the college is a good match for the child.
Via lively cases in point and inventive strategies, Kastner and Wyatt address thorny issues, including parent competition about college plans, sad and glad siblings, separating by "spoiling the nest," testing limits with drugs or sex, dumping phone calls from distraught freshmen, and having a college student home for the holidays. The authors' humor and uncommon wisdom will allow parents to let go of their children--yet stay connected with them. The fresh ideas in this book can help parents declare a child's independence and create a more loving and graceful transition to life after high school. --Barbara Mackoff
Book Description
Launching a child from home is second only to child-birth in its impact on a family. Parents can end up reeling with the empty-nest blues, while teens find their powers of self-reliance stretched to the breaking point. During the time of upheaval that begins senior year of high school with the nerve-wracking college application process and continues into the first year of life away from home,
The Launching Years is a trusted resource for keeping every member of the family sane. From weathering the emotional onslaught of impending separation to effectively parenting from afar, from avoiding the slump of “senioritis” to handling the newfound independence and the experimentation with alcohol and sexuality that college often involves,
The Launching Years provides both parents and teens with well-written, down-to-earth advice for staying on an even keel throughout this exciting, discomforting, and challenging time.

Letting Go With Grace.......2006-11-04
"The Launching Years" and "Letting Go" (Coburn/Treeger) are both insightful companions for an emotionally intense moment of parenting. Another great book for sending a young adult into the world with the loving counsel of the people important to him or her (YOU!) is "Words to Live By: A Journal of Wisdom for Someone You Love" (Emily/Kate Marshall).
Know what's coming during senior year and launch to college.......2005-09-23
This book provided insightful perspective on the many dynamics involved in "launching" your child into the college/adult years. The authors have enough professional experience with families who have gone through this transition to give the reader guidelines for the range of "normal" experiences and reassurance that the many issues are part of a developmental stage. A great book to read as you begin the senior year, but still valuable the summer between senior year and college, as it helps the parent to reflect on previous experiences and prepare for the transition ahead. I only wish there was a similar book for launching from college to career/grad school!
Only for Certain Parents.......2004-05-17
This book appeals to a specific audience: Well-educated, upper middle class parents with a solid relationship with the teen and involvement with high school life and the college application process, and no serious domestic unresolved issues. Its major virtue is to tell obsessive parents to let their burgeoning adults take more control of their lives than they are willing to grant. For the parents of a teen with unresolved issues, or one with a clear idea of how to handle college admissions and their lives in general, the book is silent. The major point is: Back off, parents. If you are not a parent who needs this message of allowing kids to find their own path, you may find it without much utility.
The most helpful book for a high school launching parent.......2003-09-19
This was an extremely helpful book. Two other launching moms and I had a support group where we read and discussed the incidents in our senior daughters lives and the material in the book. It made me feel less like a failure and more like a great mom. Very uplifting, humorous and helpful. I am giving a copy to our college counselor at the high school to recommend for parents. Great read.
You are the GREATEST.......2002-10-05
Jennifer Wyatt is the greatest EVER! She is the coolest mom and has raised the most fabulous children ever. I have yet to read her newest book but I'm anxious to begin it. Just knowing her as a person, I'm know this book will be a HUGE success! CONGRATULATIONS :-)

Miniature houses have an undeniable appeal, especially when they're made out of food. But the architectural achievements in this guide are so charming and sometimes so elaborate that it's hard to imagine actually eating them; they're meant to be admired, not devoured. From rustic to royal, humble to ornate, this eclectic assortment ranges from cooking-school complex to child-simple. Some were even designed by kids and could certainly be constructed by them. (Just be sure to buy extra trimmings, since the budding architects are bound to do some nibbling!)
The authors lay solid groundwork in the introductory section, explaining the key points of gingerbread building, pattern making, and utilizing various types of trimmings, and offer basic recipes for gingerbread dough, royal icing, marzipan, pastillage, and fondant. Then it's on to the structures themselves, contributed by more than four dozen designers. Houses, cabins, inns, chapels, castles, lighthouses, even whole little villages drip with snowy icing, as candies, cookies, and other goodies mimic stone, brick, shingle, stucco, logs, and landscaping. This is not a step-by-step guide but rather a gallery of wonderful ideas, with photos of each creation and some very general suggestions about making them. The photography is not high quality but is adequate enough to show detail, and templates are included for many of the structures. One designer even found an ingenious solution to the edibility dilemma, turning the flat roof of her elaborate Victorian concoction into a serving surface for Christmas cookies. --Amy Handy

I'll keep it but only as a supplement to better books.......2004-12-18
This book has pictures of some really cool ideas, and pictures of some less-cool ideas. It also has several basic recipes and some general building information, but it isn't very detailed. Most frustrating are the pictures of houses that have only one or two pictures and little or no information about some of the most interesting design details!
If I hadn't purchased this book from an independent bookseller, I'd probably return it. It is useful to a beginner like me, but only marginally.
Really disappointing.......2003-12-28
If you are seeking the inside secrets to gingerbread artistry, don't expect much from this book. This book doesn't even begin to cover the many gingerbread/food techniques currently available -- and that home builders can use -- which mimic real-life or fantasy -- building structures and contents. I thought that many of the instructions shown were too simple and general -- the reader deserved to read more details, more inside information on how to work with food items to create effects -- especially since the author is a pastry chef! The book's description also promises photos of the Grove Park Inn's gingerbread competition entries. But if you expect to see the competition's top of the line entries featuring incredible details, don't. I looked forward to receiving this book. I'm sorry I bought it.
Artistic, Excellent Photography, Good Variety!.......2003-08-20
Highly recommend for your baking library! Lots of great ideas, good instructions, basic templates but lots of room for your own personal taste.
Worth the buy!
Wonderful Baking Must Have.......2003-08-20
This is an excellent book with simple, clear and easy to follow instructions with plenty of room for individuality.
Photography is crisp, clear and uncluttered.
Highly recommend just for viewing pleasure if not for anything else!
I love this book!.......2002-10-06
I always loved making gingerbread houses, but I wasn't all that good at it, and someone else always assembled the house. This book inspired me to try building my first house on my own. I can't wait to try out all the decorating ideas. I think this book is really good for beginners, like myself. I love how it gives you instructions, tips, and pictures to help you make your own. If you have any interest in gigerbread houses whatsoever, I strongly advise you to read it. The pictures are beautiful, the instructions are clear, and it will have you hooked on gingerbread houses.

This book is better than your average People magazine. Not only does it provide intimate pictures of celebrities from all reaches (athletes, artists, fashion designers, and Olympic gold medallists), it also peers deep into their hearts to find animal amour. Full-page black-and-white photos portraying candid, animal-loving moments are accompanied by sentimental anecdotes about pet love and animal philosophy. "Like all great dogs, he directly counters my everlasting pessimism with his divine canine optimism," says Danny Elfman about his beautiful Saint Bernard, Gus. Animal Magnetism is in part a tribute to animal rights--with a forward by a staunch campaigner for our four-legged friends, the late Linda McCartney. It is also a meditation on the joy of pets, reminding us of how the animals in our lives are an essential part of our existence. --Courtenay Kehn

Essential reading for EVERY parent.......2007-03-12
This is a wonderful little book that goes way, way beyond techniques of child rearing. As a matter of fact, techniques are way down there when you approach parenting from these simple commonsense principles. Read it, apply it, and your experience of parenting will be tremendously satisfying. And the principles apply to practically all aspects of your life, from emotions to relationships. Dr. Fred P. Gallo, author of "Energy Tapping" and "Energy Tapping for Trauma: Rapid Relief from Post-Traumatic Stress Using Energy Psychology"
Parenting From The Heart.......2002-02-08
Parenting From The Heart, by Dr Jack Pransky, is a pearl. Written to get to the heart of the matter, it is a book that can be the catalyst for transformation in parenting. For parents that are already doing well, to parents that are struggling, it is a gold mine of wisdom and common sense. I recommend it for parents with children of all ages. I have 5 children aged from 31 to 41 and nine grandchildren and have found it invaluable. It is required reading for all clients who come to us with parenting difficulties. John Wood, Philosophy of Living Centre, Midland, Western Australia
Great for teachers of parents.......2002-01-25
In this simple, profound book Dr. Pransky strengthens the resiliency of parents. "Parenting from the Heart" makes a great book for parenting classes because it's straightforward, engaging and filled with common-sense.
I've thrown away all my other parenting books........2002-01-25
I have used this book in parenting classes for two years now and have had exceptional results. What is different about this book is that it is not a cookie cutter way of dealing with parenting.
What works for one parent may not work for another. This book guides parents to another place for the answer. Step by step Jack points out the value in calming down, deep listening and finding your own inner wisdom. Each chapter brings you further into your ability to create rapport with your child.
Parenting From The Heart.......2002-01-24
A must read for every parent and even for non parents working or living with children. Dr. Pransky understands the true source of experience in all people which allows all people to get along beautifully together, regardless of past circumstances. This understanding can help you turn a corner in your relationships once you understand the principles described in this book. New and fresh insights are possible with each reading.

Only one you need.......2006-05-01
More than anything, what children need are happy, confident, peaceful parents. This book teaches us how to find that for ouselves; and, how to then allow our children to discover it within themselves ... the essence of parenting.
The only book you need.......2001-04-03
This is a great book. It totally reshaped my views towards parenting, and helped me focus my own life as well. It teaches that you can't be a good parent unless you love yourself first. If you work on that, everything else falls into place. I'm sending it to all my friends.
This book will change your life (Really!).......1998-09-21
After reading this book, I gave a big sigh of relief. Parenting could be fun, joyful, and full of the love I feel for my children. That love is within me and all I needed was this book and a simple shift in attitude to realize this. Everything that Anne and Vic have written is simple, which is not to say that it is easy. It requires trust and discipline, but our children, and ourselves, are certainly worth this. This book doesn't preach or give you lists of things to do, but instead guides you gently on your path as a parent and a person. I can honestly say that this book will help parents with children of any age, and any question you may have about your parenting. You already know the answers, and they are within you. The Essence of Parenting will help you to see that what you seek lies within your own heart. I can't imagine my life without this book!

Quite refreshing. This book expresses the struggles of the single mom from a realistic view. It also sends a respectful cry
out to fathers who do not participate in the lives of their children.
A Very Nice Read..
