Book Description

Constructed in 1923, the American submarine S39 was practically an antique when the Japanese struck Pearl Harbor. With defective torpedoes, a semi-trained crew, and a primitive ventilation system (hence the nickname), she nevertheless sank two enemy vessels and eluded pursuit to fight again in the Solomons. This is the little-known story of how an unprepared navy fought with what it had until the tide could be turned.

5 out of 5 stars A very good account of the beginning of World War II.......2006-01-29

I came across this book by accident while looking through reviews of other Amazon reviewers. It is an interesting account of U.S. submarine S-39 covering a period from roughly early 1939 to mid-1942 when the S-39 was lost due to running aground on a reef. This is a narrative account moving between crew members, and sometimes the women they left behind, as the story moves forward.

Many of the crew members were children of the depression who joined the Navy because it furnished room, board, and clothing along with steady pay. It also furnished a chance to see the world, and service on submarines meant extra pay and a certain elite attitude. Men who qualified, usually after 6 months aboard, could wear the submariner's dolphins. The officers and men on S boats lived together elbow-to-elbow in cramped quarters and developed a certain esprit de corps. The early part of the book covers service in the Asiatic Fleet prior to the outbreak of war, and the expectations that war was on the horizon.

The S class of submarines were obsolete, and due to be replaced by the new fleet submarines, but as a previous reviewer pointed out, you have to go with what you've got. When the war started, the S-39 made its first combat patrol and sank an enemy cargo ship that was part of the force invading the Philippines. The book gives a good picture of conditions. With the Philippines being lost, the S-39 made a second patrol ending in Java, and from there a third patrol (during which it sank an enemy tanker) ending in Australia.

Operations of the submarine force moved to Brisbane, Australia, from where the S-39 made its fourth, and then its fifth patrol during which it ran aground and was destroyed. It would be nice to think that everyone survived, but the men went on to serve on other submarines, and many did not survive the war. The book was prepared by the wife of one of the survivors using extensive reference material including interviews/correspondence with other survivors. It is an interesting account of day to day events including shared hardships aboard and comradery ashore. Some men went to great lengths not to miss the boat when it sailed, or to catch up if separated.

There is a short afterward that covers the fate of a few of the individuals. Most of the individuals were in the same age group as one of my uncles who served in the Army during the war. Their ranks dwindle as the years pass.

As an additional feature, the book provides accounts of real observations of the poverty in China during that time period, the hatred that some Filipinos had for Americans, and the slavery/servitude of natives in Indonesia under Dutch rule. In one case a woman was riding in a rickshaw in China when the man pulling the rickshaw collapsed and died. Other people just ignored his body, going around him on the road, and other coolies immediately solicited the woman's business because they wanted the fare she would pay at her destination. Life was cheap.

5 out of 5 stars You Gotta Go With Whatcha Got.......2002-12-02

This fine book, written by the wife of a submarine officer who served on S-39, provides a unique look at the lost world of late-1930's submarine duty in the US Navy's *Asiatic Fleet* as well as early war patrols. Tales of pre-War submarine training and Navy life and liberty in the Philippines and China set the backdrop for the story. Unlike some WWII submarine books this one includes lots of perspective from the sailors, and their wives and sweethearts, as well as the ship's officers.

In December 1941, S-39 and several other *pigboats* (a term for the already obsolete S boats used by sailors on the then-modern *fleet boats* which, themselves, came to be called pigboats by the nuclear-powered submarine generation) made the first war patrols. When it became clear the Japanese would conquer the Philippines S-39 withdrew, shooting, from the ruined Cavite Navy base near Manila: foraging for supplies among island villages, sinking two Japanese ships, suffering depth charge and bomb attacks, refitting in soon-to-be-conquered Dutch-dominated Indonesia and finally limping into Fremantle, Australia on one engine. By March 1942, S-39 had three war patrols under her belt.

A few months later, after extensive repairs and operating from Brisbane with a new skipper, S-39 makes a short breakdown plagued patrol and then, on her fifth patrol in August 1942, runs hopelessly aground off a remote island near New Guinea. Unable to re-float the stranded sub, S-39's crew scuttles the vessel and swims through dangerous stormy waves to a nearby reef to await rescue from an Australian destroyer. After some of the crew spends the night standing on a reef in water that rises above their waist during high tide, everyone makes it safely back to Australia. In an afterword we learn, sadly, that both of S-39's skippers and several other crew members we've come to know through this book perish in other submarines lost during the War.

There are useful sketch maps of each patrol. The best feature of the book may be the 57 black and white photos. Most of them are of the men whose words and actions are portrayed in the book. I found myself referring to them often as the story unfolded.

I recommend this book highly to everyone interested in naval and submarine history. It's a chance to look beyond the *big picture* of strategies and admirals to recall the importance of the day-to-day struggle to persevere and succeed even when circumstances or equipment are not ideal. Even though S-39 was not the ideal vessel to aggressively pursue the Imperial Japanese Navy in early 1942, her officers and crew lived by a code articulated, many years later, by none other than Miss Piggy: *You gotta go with whatcha got.*

          Book Description

Cancer and Vitamin C explains in plain language the nature and known causes of this disease. It also weighs the value and limitations of various modes of treatment: surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, hormones, immunotherapy, and a number of unorthodox ones. The value of vitamin C as an adjunct therapy is corroborated by detailed accounts of cancer patients who have derived varying degrees of benefit from vitamin C treatment.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars LICENSED NURSE WITNESSED VIT. C THERAPY.......2004-03-25

As a medical professional I have used this book to preform vitamin c therapy on cancer patients. Even A friend of mine was diagnosed with brain tumor and experienced a complete remission after following the guidelines in this book. Funny how the doctor who saved his life was severely reprimanded for performing vitamin c infusions.

I still don't believe it and neither did the neuro surgeons.

This book explains why the A.M.A. and how the A.M.A. discredits vitamin c trials and their results by pointing out the discrepancies in testing, misleading language, and a total lack of objectivity which should always be prevalent in any scientific discussion. Really, if a therapy is safe, cheap, and provides hope, what's the big objection?

A real eye opener! Extremely informative! A must for all cancer patients!

1 out of 5 stars Snake oil ..........2003-09-02

This book is an example of "conspiracy medicine". This area of "alternative" belief appeals to those who always prefer to believe that there is a great secret that could save all humanity, and which is being kept from us by the Powers for their own nefarious reasons.

In this case, the conspiracy is due to the "fact" that, if we all swallowed our own weight in vitamin C daily, we could put the entire medical establishment out of business. But, although vitamin C is important for good health, it is not a miracle cure. Repeated, carefully constructed studies show that it does not prolong the lives of people with cancer. It also does not prevent the common cold. And how's this for a conspiracy theory? The Linus Pauling Institute of Medicine's largest corporate donor is Hoffman-La Roche, the pharmaceutical giant that produces most of the world's vitamin C.

(It should perhaps also be pointed out that, despite ingesting vast quantities of vitamin C for many years, Dr. Pauling died of cancer. I recommend the curious to search the archives at quackwatch.com for more information on this and other dangerous "alternative" medical beliefs.)

5 out of 5 stars Finally a scientific book that leaves no rebuttals about C!.......2002-10-01

This book is excellent. It is one of the few "layman's" books out there that actually present referenced scientific research for the public to truly understand. And the research involves an extremely important health aspect---why millions of people around the world are dying from cancer every year, and why most of them do not have to die if they take several grams of Vitamin C daily. Personally I recommend calcium ascorbate, because it's buffered, and it won't upset a person's stomach. I have taken the liberty of referencing a few sentences of Pauling and Cameron's work in the Cancer chapter of my book "The Failures of American Medicine"...

5 out of 5 stars Significant increases in life expectancy with vitamin C.......2001-03-06

Cameron and Pauling treated a large series of terminally ill cancer patients with massive doses of vitamin C. They saw significant increases in the life expectancy of these patients, including some complete remissions.

They gave a later group of terminally ill patients a broad spectrum of other vitamins and minerals with their vitamin C. These patients had even larger increases in life expectancy. Results were best with cancers of the reproductive system.

A Japanese study agrees with Cameron and Pauling but a Mayo Clinic study does not.

5 out of 5 stars cancer and vitamin c.......2000-01-28

this is the book that explain not only the conection and the actions of vitamin c on cancer, but also explain the use of the chemotherapy and radiotherapy in the kinds of cancers that it is necessary, and in what kinds it is not.in all over the book there are many case histories that are covered and the explanations on how vitamin c is realy woking on all types of cancers, and why.the expirience of both,( the grate late two times nobel price winner:linus pauling), and the scotish-oncologist: ewan cameron, that in 10 years of therapy of thousands of patients make that book possible to be published.this is linus pauling's last book before he died in 8.19.1994 .in short and in general, it is realy a great book of a combination of a chemist, and an oncologist.i am recommended very much to every one.

Spanish food is, sadly, often overlooked by cooks who find themselves more immediately drawn to Italian and French cuisine. With any luck, Janet Mendel's My Kitchen in Spain will reverse the trend. A collection of 225 authentic regional Spanish recipes, the book offers a wide range of classic dishes with origins ranging from seaside villages to metropolitan tapas bars. Andalusia-based Mendel bills herself a "food foreign correspondent" and does in fact bring a keen reportorial eye, as well as a cook's discrimination, to the task of translating Spanish food for her readers. Savory recipes for the likes of Chicken in Almond Sauce, Moorish Lamb Stew with Prunes, and Orange-Glazed Pork Tenderloins reveal her ability to provide authoritative yet approachable versions of delicious regional fare.

Following a scene-setting discussion of life in her "home" village, Mendel proceeds to tapas, including wine-bar staples like Fried Stuffed Mussels, Sizzling Shrimp with Garlic, and Crispy Potatoes with Hot Sauce. A standout chapter on gazpacho and other soups introduces White Gazpacho with Grapes and a hot winter gazpacho flavored with bitter orange--dishes that reveal the flexible character of this largely unexplored dish. Paella, a much bastardized dish, receives its due with authentic versions, including one made with pasta in place of the usual rice; and seafood, including Spain's much-beloved salt cod, is treated enticingly in dishes like Mackerel in Oregano Marinade and Sea Bass with Saffron Sauce. Country breads and sweets, including convent specialties like the meringues called Nun's Sighs, are also present. With informative sidebars, cooking tips, and evocative notes, My Kitchen in Spain is the place to begin a true Spanish culinary conquest. --Arthur Boehm

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Recipes of Personal Experience of Spanish Food.......2005-04-16

`My Kitchen in Spain' by Janet Mendel, one of the two major English language writers on the food of Spain, is not your definitive review of a food's culinary culture like Penelope Casas' `The Food and Wine of Spain' or Diane Kochilas `The Glorious Foods of Greece' or even Jean Anderson's smaller book on `The Food of Portugal'. While it is a bit less than these works, it is a bit more than Patricia Wells' two books on cooking in Provence, which are very personal recipe collections from a single region of France. It is most similar to `Rome at Home' by Suzanne Dunaway' or even to Mario Batali's `Cooking from My Two Villages'. That is, it is a personal view of a region's cooking with a fair coverage of at least all the major topics of that region's cooking, if not being a comprehensive survey.

Ms. Mendel gets on my good side immediately upon my opening the cover, where there is a very nice map of the provinces and major cities of Spain. The book's subtitle is `225 Authentic Regional Recipes' and while the geography of Spain may be more familiar to most Americans than, say, the geography of Thailand, it is still a very important matter to have a map of your region with all the place names you mention on that map. Ms. Mendel's editors slip just a bit by mentioning places in Spain which are not noted on the map, but I will forgive them, as they are small villages and the location by direction and relation to the coast are clearly described.

While I am sure that the recipes are authentic and I am sure that Ms. Mendel presents recipes from outside her immediate region, the presentation is not systematic by region. Rather, it is done by type of dish, leading off with the recently very popular Tapas. This chapter of 28 recipes begins with the big three classics, spiced fried almonds, olives, and the inimitable Spanish potato omelet (Tortilla Espanola). I was tickled when I discovered this dish and the related fact that the badly misnamed `Spanish omelet' of diners across the country has virtually nothing to do with Spain. I immediately tried Ms. Mendel's recipe as this is a favorite dish of mine, and I found it to be at least as good as all the other recipes I have tried. My personal observation is that I may rather finish it like a frittata by sliding it under a broiler rather than flipping it. Even with a modestly weighted Calphalon aluminum pan, this was pretty messy business. I followed the author's recipe by slicing the potatoes on a cheap mandoline, but she says her son claims that chopped potatoes give a better result than slicing. I am almost inclined to believe that the best procedure is to grate the spuds, as the object seems to get a pretty tightly intertwined mix of egg and potato.

The book has several sidebars on major Spanish culinary products, especially ham, sherry, and olive oil. She claims Spain produces the most and the best olive oil. There is no question that Spain produces the most. Many experts believe the best comes from Tuscany or Provence, depending on your tastes.

The author takes a very odd approach to making substitutions for Serrano ham, if you can't find the real thing. She suggests either bacon or unsmoked pancetta. Two things are odd about this. One is that pancetta is, by definition, unsmoked and the other is that I think Italian or French cured hams would be much closer to Serrano than cured pork belly. This ties in with my sense that Ms. Mendel is not the very sharpest wordsmith. This has no influence on the quality of her recipes, only in the quality of our experience in reading her books.

The next chapter is a rather smallish selection of five recipes for bread and bread byproducts (crumbs). While bread appears to be almost as important in Spanish dishes as in Italian, it is probably that Ms. Mendel is not herself a big bread baker.

The soup chapter is probably worth the cost of the book, as it gives a very nice collection of seven (7) gazpacho recipes plus a little essay on the origins of gazpacho and how the author came to learn how to make this hallmark Spanish dish. After the gazpachos, there are ten recipes for other soups and thirteen recipes for one-pot meals from soups and stews.

The egg and cheese chapter makes total sense with eight (8) egg recipes and three (3) custard and cheese recipes, since it is simply unlikely that the eggy `Tortilla Espanola' would exist without a lot of similar dishes using eggs.

The vegetable chapter reinforces the similarities between the Spanish, French, and Italian cuisines with 28 recipes for hot and cold dishes featuring artichokes, beans, onions, eggplant, asparagus, and potatoes, potatoes, potatoes.

The rice chapter features paella, but makes it clear that there are Spanish rice dishes that are not paellas. The seafood chapter has the largest number of recipes and pages, including recipes for shellfish; finfish; stews and casseroles; and salt cod. The poultry chapter is much smaller with nine (9) chicken recipes and three others, including a recipe for a Christmas turkey. The meat chapter is larger (19 recipes, 11 with pork), but not even half as large as the fish offerings. The game chapter brings the count of land based protein almost even with the briny fare with eight (8) recipes for birds and hares.

The centerpiece of Spanish sweets is, of course, the custard based flan. Otherwise, the Spanish seem to be light on sweets like their fellow Mediterranean Latin's, the Italians.

This is a very nice book for cozying up to Spanish cuisine without getting too scholarly. It is a lot different from New World Hispanic cuisine (Add olive oil and subtract chilis, mostly) and therefore worth getting to know better.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent and Easy-to-Follow Recipes.......2003-05-02

This book provides excellent, easy to follow recipes for a variety of course from Tapas to Holiday Fare, and it's all excellent.

The book, generally, calls for simple ingredients which makes for delightfully rustic meals. The recipes are clear and suitable for even a novice cook. The several Paella recipes are excellent and the Flan is to-die-for. (This is the first time I've made Flan that has ever turned out perfectly.)

Granted, there are no pictures, so this cookbook is more suitable as a COOKBOOK rather than a coffeetable book. The pictures are not necessary, as even a beginner could make the recipes beautifully, and a little creativity will help you to plate them well.

3 out of 5 stars Lack of photos destroys the whole book.......2003-04-09

As you might have guessed from my title, there is something that really puts me off in this book. Even though the recipies are good and the information the author provides about her life in Spain are interesting and provide a good read, this doesn't cease to be a cooking book and as such it lacks the visual aid to the reader. That said, it would have been nice to have some photographs of the country itself, as Spain is a beautiful country. How do you know that your dish came out allright? How will a dish seduce you to try the recipe if its photo is not there?I think it is ridiculus to price a book with not a single photo that high.I got fooled by the price and bought it thinking it would be filled with mouthwatering photos and recipies. You'd do better to buy "Savoring Spain and Portugal","The taste of Spain" by Camilla Jessel or"Spain a cookbook" by Nestor and Tin Lujan or even better "CULINARIA SPAIN" by Konemann instead of this overpriced book.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful read to teach or entertain.......2002-05-30

Janet Mendel has written a marvelous book for anyone interested in Spanish cooking, or who plans to travel to Spain. Filled with anecdotes from her 30 years of living in Spain, the book is a well-written and fascinating compendium of recipes from all over the country. It serves up descriptions and explanations of the various ingredients found in Spanish cooking, as well as substitutions available on this side of the Atlantic, where necessary. I highly recommend this book to food lovers of all levels of cooking experience.

VERY EASY TO READ AND THE PICTURES AND INFORMATION FOR MAKING ALL THE QUILLING PIECES WERE CLEAR AND COLORFUL.

5 out of 5 stars Great general book on the craft.......2005-08-19

I am an ardent collector of craft books, and have three on quilling now. Of those I have, this is the best one; it covers the basic technique itself, exhibits the many various shapes, gives helpful suggestions on form, design and uniformity, and provides the student with a number of useful suggestions for finished projects. (I also enjoyed the book because it wasn't filled with the "I" word every other sentence.)

              5 out of 5 stars Great book!!.......2005-04-23

This my first quilling book and i love it. It has some great patterns including a cross, minature plants, kitchen herbs and more! I recommend this book for both beginners and advanced quillers.

                Book Description

Once mostly rolling hills and valleys covered with hardwood forest in the seventeenth century, contemporary Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley now claim the largest concentration of many of the finest public and private gardens in the world. William M. Klein explores the broader attitudes and behaviors toward nature that have influenced this developmentt—of colonial farms and gardens created for survival to the art of suburban gardens to nature conservatories and public parks.

Discover how in 300 years we have moved from fencing nature out to fencing nature in. Out of the past, examine the worm fence at Colonial Pennsylvania Plantations, overgrown by weeds as it would have been during Colonial times, zigzagging across the fields tenuously holding back the great forest that presses down. Into the present, consider the chain link fence at the John Heinz Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum that bounds a threatened wetland habitat from the intrusion of highways and reverberates to the sounds of traffic from I-95 and the Philadelphia International Airport.

Klein's eloquent and knowledgeable narrative include detailed portraits of forty-four individual gardens, all lustrously illustrated by noted garden photographer Derek Fell. While considering a particular garden's historical and social influences, Klein discusses the philosophy behind each garden, its planner's goals and even personality, and the garden's interaction with surrounding architecture.

This complete guide also includes each location's address, phone number, hours of operation, events, and featured plants, flowers, and trees. Yet this book goes far beyond the usual guides in this search for answers to the perennial questions of how and why each generation struggles to define its place in nature. As we approach the twenty-first century, the garden has become the metaphor for how we must begin to view all nature today—tended space where we collect, name, nurture, and share our love of plants.

                  Book Description

Since William Penn's founding of Philadelphia as a "greene countrie towne," thousands of acres of public gardens and arboretums have spawned in and around the city. Fairmont Park is the largest in any American city; even Philadelphia's zoo is a splendid garden and arboretum. Many gardens in the region were first cultivated by early Quakers and include historic, restored homes dating to the early 1700s. Includes location and detailed site information with common and Latin names of all species photographed and features stunning, beautiful, and artistic full-color photography.

"Grabbing exercise when and where you can really does count," says Kathy Kaehler, fitness trainer of celebrities like Meg Ryan, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jennifer Aniston, and Claudia Schiffer. You've seen her dispensing fitness tips on the Today show and in several exercise videos. In Real-World Fitness, Kaehler presents sneaky ways to get your exercise while you're involved in your daily life. There's a lot of name-dropping in this book (with testimonials from Kaehler's celebrity clients) and tantalizing glimpses into the fitness habits and challenges of the stars. Schiffer, for example, was planning a workout video yet couldn't do three pushups when Kaehler met her. Pfeiffer used to be a two-pack-a-day smoker.

Kaehler describes exercises that can be done with whatever you've got around the house: jumping over a garden hose, picking up toys, throwing snowballs, raking leaves. She presents a basic workout for the major muscle groups of the upper body using free weights and of the lower body requiring no equipment except a chair. Her "8 Weeks to a Show-off Body" is a progressive program suitable for motivated beginners, incorporating daily aerobics and strength training. She includes valuable information about goal setting, motivation, body image, weight loss, and the cumulative value of short bouts of exercise. --Joan Price

                      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful for Beginners.......2003-01-24

If your New Year's resolution was to start exercising but you have no idea where to start, Real-World Fitness is worth checking out. This book is a great starting place for someone new to the world of fitness like me. If you are an experienced exerciser, you're bound to find some great ideas in here, but some might be a bit basic. The theme of the book is that a little exercise is better than none at all and once you get started, you'll find it easy to continue.

                      PROS:
+The only equipment needed are walking shoes, and maybe some small hand weights.
+Kaehler writes in a very unintimidating tone.
+Sections are included on healthy eating, target exercises (legs, abs, glutes, etc.), and benefits of exercise.
+The final section, "8 Weeks to a Show-Off Body," is a great plan for the motivated beginner that can easily be followed after the 8 weeks is over.

                      CONS:
-As mentioned in other reviews, the constant celebrity name dropping is unfathomably annoying. So much so that you might want to look elsewhere if that sort of stuff bothers you. But if you can look past it, this book is a goldmine for the beginnner.

3 out of 5 stars Great for beginners..........2002-04-05

I have been a fan of Kathy Kaehler for a while, so I was very excited to see this book. I was a bit disappointed because it was very basic. I did find a couple of new exercises that I have incorporated into my regular workouts. I was annoyed by the way that she throws around the names of all the celebrities that she trains. The pictures and directions make the exercises very easy to follow. Overall, I would recommed this book for beginners but not for advanced exercisers.

5 out of 5 stars Tips for the REAL WORLD.......2001-12-06

This book is packed full of exercises you can sneak in here and there. The card trick is amazing! Also, a section dedicated to helping a certain body part is super helpful. The wire binding is a necessity for a workout book--you can place it flat on the floor or counter when going through exercises. VERY happy with this purchase--have had it for quite a while.

4 out of 5 stars Well laid out book.......2001-03-17

I found Kaehler's book to be a great overall fitness book and fairly motivating. She gives good logical advice and doesn't accept reasons for not exersizing. The thing that drives me the "craziest" about the book is the name-dropping. I believe she overuses the names of her clients and generally pumps her status up a bit. Other than that it's a good buy. Visually interesting, good clean examples and great techniques. Worth the $. Good luck! T. Heerwig

5 out of 5 stars Easy to follow and fun-keeps it real!.......1999-11-04

I really enjoyed this book. I have read many and tried different programs, but this book keeps things on a real level with easy to follow and practical solutions to changing and adding to your lifestyle to fit your needs. I liked the extra stories of her work in Holleywood; added flair! I try to carry this book with me when I travel and am away from the gym. When I get pregnant (way in the future!) I'm looking forward to reading the pregnancy fitness book too! Thanks!

Besides the reproductions of Vincent's drawings. This book goes into the craft of making sketchbooks: How pages are organized. Sewing the bindings. The construction of the cover. There are a plethora of books on making sketchbooks in the past few years. But, this book is a double whammy. It not only contains intimate information on VanGogh's work in drawing, but has this explicit information about the craft of the books. He had a compartment in the rear of the book to keep notes.Of all of the books I own on sketchbooks this book is the most valuable. It shows how valuable sketchbooks were to an artist that seemed as though he would never master the basics of drawing . But, become one of the greatest draftsman of all time. The modest price on this book is money well spent

                      4 out of 5 stars What a glimpse..........2005-07-19

Both the text and the images in this book are priceless -- the photos of the actual sketchbooks of Van Gogh evoke a feeling that right here, inside these small books, is a map of the process of an artistic genius. The end section that shows some of the sketches next to finished works is a great illustration of that exact process.

The essays and description of the reconstruction of these sketchbooks was both interesting and scholarly. Good reference for art historians and artists alike.

                                      Book Description

In 1829, Mrs. S.C. Hall, an Irishwoman living in England, published Sketches of Irish Life and Character. This and many subsequent works established her reputation as a sharp interpreter of Irish character. What makes her work particularly interesting is that it displays a tolerance and lack
of bigotry that was unusual for its time, and that she is openly critical of government mismanagement and misrule. This book explores her life and literary achievement.
