A good all around primer.......2003-06-02
Dick knows his stuff and has been around long enough to give sage advice. This book covers all versions of the police rifle whereas so many other books concentrate on one aspect of LE usage of longarms be it a "patrol rifle" snipers rifle or SMG.
Fairburn's book gets down into the 'been there bent that' of using long arms in the field, a lot of lessons learned went into the book. He also touches on ancillary equipment, bags, bipods, scopes, binos etc. He includes the generic ballistics tables that are becoming so common in manuals of this type as well as a light discussion of cartridges. None of the material is covered in an overly technical manner and it is obviously written from the perspective of a po' officer working for a po' agency. An unfortunate, but all too common, event these days. As such, he gives tips on using the cheap new breed of "unassault" rifles (levers and bolts) as well as little used models such as Marlin Camp series.
He touches on all aspects of police rifle use, patrol, sniper, etc., and gives enough information to get a newbie started in the right direction. If your background and training only consists of pistols this book should be on your shelf. An added nice touch is the extensive and well done targets included in the last pages. Many will never use them but for that unfortunate po' officer (or lawful citizen) they do make for inexpensive training.

Description:
Accident management activities at nuclear power plants require concurrent communication, information sharing, team based decision-making and collective actions under tactical and dynamic environments. Team effectiveness under such environments can be characterized as the performance of team situation awareness with hierarchically distributed information and knowledge susceptible to organizational characteristics and communication quality. This paper proposes a team performance model, called a team crystallization model comprising of four elements: state, information, organization, and orientation and its quantification method using a communication process model based on a receding horizon control approach. The team crystallization model is a holistic approach for evaluating team effectiveness in conjunction with team situation awareness considering physical system dynamics and team behavioural dynamics for a tactical and dynamic task at a nuclear power plant. This model provides a systematic measure to evaluate time-dependent team effectiveness or performance affected by multi-agents such as plant states, communication quality in terms of transferring situation-specific information and strategies for achieving the team task goal at a given time, and organizational factors. To demonstrate the applicability of the proposed model and its quantification method, a case study was carried out using the data obtained from a full-scope power plant simulator for 1000MW(e) pressurized water reactors with four on-the-job operating groups and one expert group who knew accident sequences.

Good Ideas Clouded By Over-Reaching Moral Judgment.......2007-07-23
While this book started off strong, with great definitions and explorations of character, the author goes off on some specific tangents that disrupt from the books central theme and detract from the message. While the author is entitled to his position on abortion, he takes for granted that all people must feel the same way, and spends time on at how many weeks fetal heartbeat is detected to further his position. Interesting in an anti-abortion book, but came out of left field in the chapter he was writing here. Similarly, he takes for granted that all parents naturally want to teach their children that masturbation is immoral, and suggests that if your teen self-identifies as homosexual that you should try to take them to a psychiatrist to get that fixed. Again, a lot of parents might feel this way, but he makes assumptions and then goes off on tangents.
He also uses some questionable data and doesn't support some of his statistics with verifiable sources. For example, he says that homosexual young women are at a higher risk for STDs than heterosexual women (completely untrue) He obviously supports abstinence-based sex education in schools, but doesn't talk about the studies that show that teens who pledge to remain virgins until marriage are more likely to substitute high-risk behaviors that lead to STDs (Journal of Adolescent Health) and are less prepared to handle temptation when they are asked to use willpower alone to manage the risks that can be consequences of adolescent hormones.
I started off loving this book, and dog-eared and high-lighted several pages in the first few chapters, and ignored the first few questionable statistics and tangents, but it got worse and worse, until I felt uncomfortable continuing to read it, like I was reading a parenting book by Jerry Falwell.
One character-building book I'd recommend instead is Character Building Activities For Kids.
A+ for Thomas Lickona.......2007-06-29
As a graduate student going into the field of school counseling, I found this book extremely interesting and useful. Of all the books I have been assigned to read for classes, this one is by far the best. The ideas and activities Thomas Lickona has come up with for building character and morality in students is phenominal. His ideas are so creative yet simple at the same time. They are also realistic and very diverse for all ages. If you are in the field of education, a parent, or someone just interested in this topic, this book is a MUST! I believe if all educators looked at character education the way Thomas Lickona does we could make a positive difference in our children today.

Our school's Site Based Team is in the process of doing something related to Dr. Lickona's book "Character Matters" that we think is exciting. Organized around the "book club" theme, we have been promoting the book as something we think is worth having parents and staff read. Since June of last year, we have sold close to 160 copies of the book; we also have a set of five available to borrow from the school library. This endeavor will culminate with an evening with Dr. Lickona in November, where he facilitates a book talk and takes questions from the audience. We're expecting in excess of 200 parents and educators in attendance, and are quite excited to see where this takes us in our character education initiative. As we were with his previous work, "Raising Good Children", we are indebted to Dr. Lickona for his commitment to promoting good character.

Making Character Come Alive.......2006-11-02
Our school district began a Character Education initiative three years ago. I am the Coordinator of the project. We knew from the beginning that we wanted to include our entire community but were not sure where to begin. I was fortunate enough to learn about Dr. Tom Lickona's book, Character Matters. After reading the book, I was even more committed to our project. We purchased a book for every employee to read and have used Dr. Lickona's teachings through this book, as a step-by-step guide in implementing Character in Action in Wisconsin. After our first year, we made the decision to host a two-day Character Education Conference for all educators in the Midwest. Dr. Lickona was one of our keynote speakers AND every conference participant received Character Matters in their conference bag. It was the best gift we could give to other educators wanting to know more about character education. I highly recommend this book to anyone, educator, parent or community leader, who is striving to make a difference in our world and wishes to do so the right way!

I wish this book would be required reading for every school administrator, teacher, and parent. I have been a public school educator for 25 years. I am also a parent and a grandparent.
I found this book to be extremely refreshing in a time where "No Child Left Behind" has taken us too far in the wrong direction. Yes, we want to set high academic expectations for our children and yes, we do want accountability. But what good are high test scores if there is more cheating, dishonesty, cynicism, and disrespect for others? This book, along with many others on Character Education, is a call back to common sense in education: Let's not only raise our expectations for academic achievement, but also for honesty, integrity, responsibility, work ethic, and respect for others. The current NCLB legislation (with its emphasis on high stakes testing) has taken the focus away from educating the whole child. Current education research shows this is not best practice; this is not in the best interest of the child or of our society! This book provides inspiration and hope for educating the whole child. It provides many practical suggestions and ideas for making our homes, schools, and communities a much more civil place to live and learn. If educators, legislators, and parents would read this book and put it's ideas into practice, we would be making a positive difference!

Having been an equine bodywork practioner in So. Cal for over a decade, I have looked at many massage books. This book is by far the most comprehensive as far as anatomy and function of the horse. One word of caution, be careful when performing the stretches he demonstrates in the book, not always the best human biomechanics are used!

Well worth the money.......2004-07-28
The two things I like most about this book is its thoroughness in the techniques it shows and its easy to understand and follow instructions. Not only does it give step-by-step written instructions, but it also shows you pictures at each step, unlike some craft books that only give you a picture of the final project. The book also contains a variety of projects, and they are decorated in different styles. Most other craft book only offer one style, such as very -artsy- (i.e. colorful) or very -country-. There is nothing wrong with these styles, but it is nice to have a variety of inspiring choices, such as this book provides. I reccommend it to both the beginner and more experienced crafter.
Excellent Resource for those who want to make books or paper.......2003-02-16
Altho' I am somewhat of a beginning artist, I want to use my form to make books and embellished items. After comparing this book to others, I found this WELL worth the investment -- even at full price. I can hardly wait to get started! It covers very basic techniques to more advanced, "artsier" stuff, and makes it simple enuf to follow along and figure it out. Complete with great photos and simple instructions...if you're interested in making books or paper, this is a great resource...

Field studies were conducted in Idaho from 2002 to 2004 to determine whether summer grazing of sheep for 1 or 2 years before an autumn application of imazapic would enhance control of Euphorbia esula. E. esula, a perennial plant native to parts of Europe and Asia, has invaded the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains after its introduction into North America in the early 1880s and caused significant reductions in native plant biomass. Experiments were conducted to determine the impacts of 1 or 2 years of sheep grazing with or without a fall application of imazapic on E. esula and native plant populations. Sheep grazing was designed to remove reproductive parts from E. esula within a 10d grazing period. Imazapic was applied at 210gaeha^-^1 with 1.25% (v/v) methylated seed oil. One year of sheep grazing did not alter measured vegetation components, but it did result in an increase of grass seed in the soil. Two years of sheep grazing increased the forb and grass cover component, increased the grass seed in the soil, and kept the E. esula seed bank from increasing. Application of imazapic reduced E. esula stem densities and cover and increased native forb cover. The combination of 1 or 2 years of sheep grazing and imazapic did not enhance the control of E. esula. However, 2 years of carefully timed sheep grazing followed with an imazapic application resulted in sustained productivity of plant biomass in the pasture. Because 2 years of sheep grazing prevented an increase in the E. esula seed bank, managers may have a better opportunity to establish desired vegetation in sagebrush steppe ecosystems after removing E. esula with imazapic.

This book is used in the Family Dynamic's "Dynamic Marriage" course. We've been through the course 3 times. The first time, we were newlyweds and learned a lot about each other. The second time, we'd been married a little while and worked through some issues we needed help in. The third time, we had a great marriage, and we made it even better. It's a wonderful book and an excellent course. I'd recommend it to anyone. The course and the book together have been an indispensable tool in our marriage.

This is a great book. It is easy to read and it is interesting. Mr. Wilson does not just write about Shakespear and give his theories, he provides reasoned arguments about those theories. Mr. Wilson also provides alternative arguments and alternative theories regarding Shakespear.
My only complaint? I'd like to see a list of the main people that are discussed with some clue as to their context. I say this because you will be introduced to someone on page 10 and not read about him again until page 87. A quick reference page would be very helpful in keeping everyone straight.
Otherwise, this is a great book.

Books on Shakespeare roughly seem to fall into two categories: Standard scholarly books that downplay the man and focus on the plays and ingenious, entertianing books by frequently learned amateurs of anti-stratfordian theories of authorship. Anti-stratfordians have an advantage with the popular reading public; whereas academics are content to deal with texts as if they have no referents, laypeople necessarily have to ask (as William Paley said in his "natural theology) what kind of man wrote these plays. Anti-stratfordians are all too willing to oblige.
Furthermore the field is fairly well uncontested as practically all academics consider anti-stratfordian theories as beneath their contempt. This is a shame because generally they are entirely worthy of contempt. Ian Wilson is educated amateur, with the sort of background one associates with anti-stratfordians. He summarizes and interprets the available evidence and comes to some remarkable conclusions.
Best of all, his is not an "anti-anti-stratfordian rant" he concentrates on considering the "stratford man" not knocking other candidates. But the position of there being an "authorship problem" is made untenable. Particularly when read in conjuction with Matus' SHAKESPEARE IN FACT which addresses subsequent assessments of shakespeare (culminating in romantic "bardolatry") as well as a dissection of the claims for Oxford. This even though there are plenty of "arguably"'s, "almost certian"'s, "likely"'s that stud the text which the loyal opposition will make much of.
The one substantian objection is that Wilson argues for the likelihood of a position (for example the identity of the "dark lady") and then frequently treats it as establish fact. This is a chief vice of anti-strafordians A few more qualifiers would have enhanced the book's credibility.
Flawed.......2000-01-25
This is a fascinating book, but I was dismayed by Wilson's anti-Elizabeth bias. He refers to her as a "hideous old woman" responsible for the death of "many worthy young people" like Mary Queen of Scots and the Earl of Essex. Worthy young people...those two? Mary Stuart was singularly lacking in common sense, and, after catching Mary red-handed plotting against her numerous times, Elizabeth had little choice politically but to execute her. As for Essex, he was a spoiled egomaniac who bit the hand that fed him. Wilson also does himself no service by referring to Robert Cecil as "the little secretary Cecil" or by repeating without caveat a discredited story about how Essex's ring was not given to Elizabeth.

Being a Shakespearean actor, I am very interested in consuming any information concerning the bard from critiques of the plays and sonnets to varied information about his life. Usually though its a chore to ponder through overblown scholarly disertaions on the works that totally ignore the dimension of the presentation and performance. Even more so with dull biographers who grapple with sparse facts on Shakespeare's life and who eventually draw a very incomplete view of the man. That all changed in reading this book! Ian Wilson paints the most complete portrait of the bard that I have ever read. Piecing together bits of direct and surrounding evidence, selections of the plays and political intriques of the time Wilson writes an exciting narrative that reads more like a screenplay then a dissertation. I found myself dieing to know what happend next as his life unfolded. Here Shakespeare appears as a true Human being and not the stuff of half baked legend and places emotion and motivation behind the writing of the plays. It describes in detail his dealings with the high members of the court of England, rising through the ranks of the theatrical world and gives a poignant glimpse into the man himself and dispels any allusion to the authorship question, especially from Edward De Vere. Given the success of "Shakespeare in Love", Hollywood should take this book and fashion a mini-series on his life. There is more than enough drama and mystery in these pages for three films. Definitely a great read for any scholar or Shakespearean actor that seek to relish the rich legacy that Will left to our culture.
Great look at Shakespeare........1999-03-06
This is very well written account of what we know of Shakespeare's Life. Wilson makes a very persuasive case for Shakespeare as the author of the plays and sonnets. At times his reasoning becomes a little convoluted, but almost all books on subjects like this have some twistings in their reasoning. After reading this I would stand behind Shakespeare on the authorship debate, partly because there is no reason to believe that he did not write the plays. Jeff Anderson
