Book Description
Einstein called Isaiah Berlin ‘an actor in God’s big theater.’ But Isaiah Berlin was more than a brilliant entertainer on stage. He worked tirelessly advocating tolerance and freedom for all, thereby shaping the political and philosophical liberalism of the 20th century — the only political theory that endures. Berlin’s political ideologies were shaped by his own three competing racial identities: Russian (because he was born in Russia), Jewish, and British (because of the exile).
Book Description
Childhood and adult experiences of individuals with Asperger Syndrome (AS) are becoming increasingly well documented, yet the crucial formative teenage years have, so far, been neglected. Adolescence is a difficult time for any teenager, but when you have Asperger Syndrome this already emotionally complex time of life becomes all the more challenging. Reflecting the views of parents, professionals and those with AS themselves, this book tackles issues that are pertinent to all teenagers, such as sexuality, depression and friendship, as well as discussing topics like disclosure and therapeutic alternatives that are more specific to those with AS. This book aims to make the transition from child to adult as smooth as possible, and is an essential survival guide to adolescence.

Special Education Teacher Review.......2003-08-28
An insightful resource! I found this book to be very informative. The author's explanation of the syndrome was clear and very easy to understand. To read the preface by Luke Jackson, a student identified with Asperger's, was also very moving and validating. I am in the process of referring a high school student for Asperger's screening. This book was my number 1 resource in my own exposure to this disability and its place on the Autistic spectrum. The author covers such innovative topics as; cognitive behavior therapy, exploring friendships,the sexuality of Asperger teens, the importance of occupational therapy, safety issues,diagnosis, parenting, interventions strategies, educational concerns and disclosure & self-advocacy. One would hope a child with Asperger's would be diagnosed at the elementary level. However, with such a new awakening to the topic, I feel there are probably hundreds of misdiagnosed adolescents out there waiting for help and insight. Parents, I urge you to approach your child's teachers if you suspect Asperger-like characteristics in your own child. Then, I recommend you all read this book!
Book Description
Nowadays, everyone who entertains is looking for outstanding casual fare that will allow them to spend more time with their guests. Dishes must be quick and easy to prepare (or able to be made ahead) and filled with the purest ingredients for optimum flavor.
The Best of Gourmet, Featuring the Flavors of Thailand is filled with twenty-eight such menus-most are very relaxed, all are absolutely delicious.
For example, after a chilly day on the slopes, you may want to treat your houseguests to A Ski House Dinner. Begin the evening around the fire with champagne and a large platter of ever-so-tender smoked salmon with cilantro cream. Later, roasted veal chops with shallots, tomatoes, and olive jus nestled on pillows of soft polenta make a rich, indulgent entrée. And before everyone retires, a heavenly warm chocolate raspberry pudding cake, made the day before and reheated, is served with a glass of cognac.
When the summer heats up, why not spend A Weekend at the Shore with friends? You'll have three clever menus in hand that take advantage of the season's abundant fresh produce, include plenty of make-ahead dishes, and satisfy hearty seaside appetites. On Saturday morning you can serve Breakfast on the Beach with buttery-rich baked blueberry-pecan French toast. Lunch Indoors includes a serve-yourself composed salad of classic favorites and a lovely rhubarb rice pudding. Then, after a long day in the sun, Dinner on the Deck promises a seafood meal to remember with curry-marinated mussels, followed by grilled lobster with Southeast Asian dipping sauce.
Or perhaps a last-minute Beyond Backyard Basics dinner is closer to what you had in mind? This little gem of a menu features ratatouille with penne-a heavenly jumble of roasted eggplants, onions, yellow squash, and red bell peppers, with plum tomatoes, garlic, thyme, parsley, and basil. For dessert, multicolored grapes perched atop pastry cream in puff pastry shells make a scrumptious and ever-so-pretty choice.
So which menu will you try first? You'll find more than eighty pages of exquisite full-color photographs to help you decide. Altogether, this volume holds more than 350 recipes-including the very best recipes that appeared in Gourmet's food columns during 1999. There are hundreds of dishes that can be made in forty-five minutes or less (look for the clock symbol ð); plenty of leaner and lighter selections (look for the feather symbol F); seasonal ideas for everything from apples to zucchini; and an impressive array of tempting sweets and snacks.
This year's Cuisines of the World section turns to the intriguing flavors of Thailand with a traditional dinner for eight and a collection of Thai snacks. Dishes such as steamed red snapper with ginger, grilled beef salad, fish cakes, and coconut ice cream demonstrate the sweet, sour, hot, and salty tastes of this fascinating country. Informative primers and exquisite full-color photos add further insight.
Twenty-four more brand-new recipes appear in a special section featuring Unusual Pastas and Grains. From fresh rice noodles to Israeli couscous to wheat berries, and much more, these unique pantry items will undoubtedly expand your palette of flavors.
Just when you thought you had tasted it all, along comes a cookbook that opens up a world of new possibilities-

Book Description
Vickie Howell--the popular host of DIY network's Knitty Gritty--plus a dozen contributing designers have stepped out of the box with 25 super-original, funky playtime projects that are as much fun for parents to knit as they are for children to receive.
Not another boring sweater! Vickie Howell, and her group of talented contributors, will make you the most popular parent on the block with the coolest projects for kids' stuff ever. These knits are gifts children will go nuts over, because they include a playful range of costumes and toys. Crafty moms and dads can create such enchanting items as a wizard's hat and princess crown; a super kid cape, mermaid dress up, pirate bath set, alien tooth fairy pillows, bowling ball and pins, and a tool set with pouch. Vickie includes estimations of how long each project will take to complete, along with tips for busy knitters and advice on special techniques, such as felting, tassel making, and edgings. Many of the designers have appeared on her show--but every item is a never-before-seen original.
Customer Reviews:
fun, fun, fun.......2007-01-18
If you knit for little children, you'll find lots of fun costumes in this book to make for boys and for girls.
Fairy tooth pillow.......2007-01-10
Actually, after reading the directions for thew fairy tooth pillow, I found it did not suit my needs.
I sent the book back.
Total Kitsch.......2006-11-18
I'm an avid knitter of children's clothing and am always looking to add to my library of cool, updated knitting books and patterns for kids. Unfortunately, I found the patterns in this book to be completely kitschy...none of them are ones I'd make myself for my daughters or as gifts for friends.
There are patterns for costumes (knights, mermaids, capes) and a couple for toys that are nice to look at (blocks, bowling set), but I think this book might be better marketed towards KIDS interested in knitting, rather than towards adults interested in gifts for kids.
Very creative projects!.......2006-05-11
I hesitated to review a knitting pattern book, since I cannot vouch for each pattern and patterns are essentially the book. But this book suprised me and charmed me. There are 25 projects for children. No sweaters and scarves, just costumes and toys and silly things for kids.
The projects are mostly beginner to intermediate. They're rated by how much time needed to complete the project. Here's some of the patterns included:
* Fireman hat
* Mermaid outfit
* Unicorn hat
* King's crown
* Tool set with pouch
* Super kid cape
* Ancient Egyptian outfit
* Knight costume
* Pirate bath set
* Alien tooth fairy pillow
* Robot jammie bag
* Hawaiian oufit
* Viking costume
* Sleeping bag
This book assumes that you can knit. The first chapter shows special techniques like felting (used in a wizard's hat) and how to knit i-cord. You may recognize the author from Knitty Gritty, a knitting show on DIY Network.
Ready to knit something unique for the kids in your life? I think you'll be pleased with this wonderful book.
What a bargain!.......2006-02-23
I couldn't believe it when I saw the price on this book. Similar books go for as much as twice what this one is listed at! And the patterns are whimsical, fun, creative... My daughter is dying for the mermaid outfit, and I've already knit the backpack for her. Some patterns (like the crowns) are a little silly (why knit them for oodles of money and time when you can simply make them out of paper and let your kids decorate them themselves?), but overall, this book provides a great assortment of fun, interesting choices.

Why do so many seemingly successful professionals hit the wall in middle age, and decide to either radically scale back their careers or set off in an entirely new direction? Clinical psychologist Steven Berglas, a specialist in success-induced burnout, believes it stems from the "self-handicapping behavior" that baby boomers are exhibiting in record numbers as they climb the corporate ladder and find they aren't happy with what results. Terming the phenomena Supernova Burnout, Berglas defines this workplace ennui as "the constrictive effects of being branded a 'success'" and offers some advice for the psychological distress that is an increasing consequence. In Reclaiming the Fire, he advances his arguments in a serious but accessible manner with references to cultural touch points like Mark Monsky's Looking Out for #1 and help from philosophers such as Friedrich Nietzsche. He analyzes "performance-inhibiting" behaviors ranging from substance abuse to abrupt career changes that he says developed from societal attitudes of the last half century, and suggests a few individual and organizational responses (including his 60 Minutes cure, which relies upon passion and intrinsic motivation to battle career malaise). While not everyone will agree with his assessments and prescribed cures, businesspeople who fit Berglas's description--and human resource managers who deal them--will likely find the material intriguing and potentially helpful. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
The definitive work on avoiding burnout, written by the psychologist who is the leading specialist on the issue. An illuminating and useful book for anyone coping with the pressures of work.
In
Reclaiming the Fire, Dr. Steven Berglas analyzes the rises and falls of corporate executives, middle managers, lawyers, entrepreneurs, and others as they struggle to handle the trappings of successful careers. How does one deal with encore anxiety, the monotony of having to use talents that are no longer psychologically rewarding? Why is it that our national obsession with wealth traps people in careers that often lead them to wonder, "Is that all there is?" And why do highly successful people often set themselves up for disastrous falls?
Dr. Berglas answers all these questions and many more in this groundbreaking book by discussing real people whose careers have left them feeling pressured, burdened, and jaded.
In his most progressive and striking contribution to the literature on career success, Dr. Berglas debunks the persistent myth that women suffer more stress and burnout than men. He disproves the common claim that women involved both in careers and in family life suffer from trying to have it all, and he demonstrates how the drive to form close interpersonal ties a drive that is intrinsic to women can actually prevent both men and women from experiencing burnout. In a related analysis of the mentoring process, Dr. Berglas shows why it is more important for careerists to build legacies for future generations (a process he terms generativity) than to become obsessed with their own personal success. He proves that the process not only benefits the student but provides the mentor with psychological satisfaction and even improved physical health.
Reclaiming the Fire uses the working world not the psychiatric couch as a venue for understanding the psychological and emotional burdens of success. It is the first comprehensive account of how to balance self-esteem and ambition while maintaining challenge and stimulation throughout your career.
Reclaiming the Fire provides insight into:
*Why baby boomers are currently suffering an epidemic of career dissatisfaction
*Why women are uniquely suited to cope with the pressures that cause men to suffer burnout, and what men can learn from them
*How to escape golden handcuffs: the workaholic devotion to a job that is no longer emotionally satisfying
*How to cope with anger that threatens to sabotage your career
*How all professionals can identify the passions that will allow them to sustain and enjoy success throughout their lives
Customer Reviews:
very good .......2007-07-24
I have not yet read through the entire book but it explores many novel ideas. The author did a very good job in bring the text down to everyones level. There is some information that is just not necessary in the book but other than that it is very good.
More common than you think ... when the adrenaline of chasing success stops working.......2006-06-02
There are countless examples of people who have worked and slaved for years in a tunnel vision quest to be top dog ... only to get there and after a while just walk out of a life they once desired like nothing else. Sometimes they say a change of heart did it ... but the psychology of success and the constant demand and expectations of others over time tips the scales to a real fear of failure. Many people prefer to go out with a bang than to fade away a has-been. An intriguing look that begs the question if success really does make one happy.
When I thought I just had it.......2006-03-20
When I started reading the first few chapters, it was like the author was speaking directly to me, knowing what goes on inside my head. Actually, he even made me realize some things I never did myself. The only thing that hurt about this book is the author's writing style and his habit of using superfluous words. I mean when you have to run to a dictionary and back ten times in one chapter, it takes your mind off from the topic. The book is good if you want to understand the problem, but there aren't any real remedies inside this book. Until the very end, we were still discussing the problem and not the cure. Even in the last two chapters there are just more details about the problem yet no actual remedies.
This is a good book and if you're suffering from a burnout and you should get this book because it's a good first step!
An exceptional read - insightful, clear, and well-written.......2003-03-01
Dr. Berglas has written an exceptional book that I would recommend to those who are facing workplace issues such as burnout and "Isn't there more than this?" questioning. While I believe his research is relevant for all audiences - I would highly recommend it for people in large corporate settings - as well as those in supervisory roles. Personally, I picked up the book hoping to find some answers regarding the "dead ends" and the boredom I was starting to feel at my corporate job - and I found Dr. Berglas' book to be insightful and solutions-oriented for people like me... While the book is well-researched and deals with complex issues, it is clear and concise and should be easily understandable for all audiences to grasp... If this book is calling out to you for some reason, I highly recommend you read it.
Excellent contents - Not easy to apply.......2002-04-28
This book deals with the phenomenon of people who have or have had extraordinary succesful careers and nevertheless found themselves to be extremely unhappy - partially up to the point of self-destruction. This also defines the audience for this book: the people described above or those who take a keen interest in such people.
The book has been written by an adjunct faculty member at Harvard Medical school. The academic level is - as far as I can judge - impeccable. The author quotes on many occasions from actual patient-cases which are common enough that many a reader will recognize some of his or her own headaches. One notices that an effort has been made to write a book that is accessible to the general public. However, the book does maintain a certain academic tone that will be off-putting to some people. There are no exercises, questionaires, or the like that would involve the reader a bit more with the subject matter.
Whoever thinks that reading this book and applying a few quick-fix exercises here and mental readjustments there is going to enable them to continue like before, just happier, is extremely mistaken. Dr. Berglas points out that a lot of the misery discussed is a direct result of some deeply engrained characteristics of our culture. For most people, following up on Dr. Berglas' suggestions will imply a drastic (but doable) change in lifestyle.
Being somewhat of an academic myself with a keen interest in psychological issues, I found the book extremely valuable. The value to you depends on how you personally feel about the above. However, my advice: if in doubt, buy it!

Book Description
When first published in 1888, the letters of Dorothy Osborne to William Temple - written between 1652 and 1654 - created a kind of cult phenomenon in the Victorian period. Osborne and Temple, both in their early twenties, shared a romance that was opposed by their families, and Osborne herself was almost constantly under surveillance. Osborne's letters provide a rare glimpse into an early modern woman's life at a pivotal point, as she tried to find a way to marry for love as well as fulfil her obligations to her family.
Combining historical and biographical research with feminist theory, Carrie Hintz considers Osborne's vision of letter writing, her literary achievement, and her literary influences. Osborne has long been overlooked as a writer, making a comprehensive and thorough analysis long overdue. While the nineteenth-century reception of the letters is testament to the enduring public fascination with restrained love narratives, Osborne's eloquent and outspoken articulation of her expectations and desires also makes her letters compelling in our own time.

Book Description
1914. Dorothy Osborne's sole literary remains consist of a slim book of 77 letters written to her husband-to-be, Sir William Temple, during their courtship, plus 9 letters written after their marriage. The letters are brilliantly written and show a flair for self-examination. They form almost a novel in themselves, and subsequent readers have found them both fascinating and stylistically charming. It has won its place among readers as a beautiful autograph portrait of a virtuous, amiable, and sensible woman, who, by the natural charm of her literary-style, is as much alive today as she was to the squires and shepherds and carriers of the English countryside which was her beloved home.
