Book Description
Chas Mayhead was one of the millions of young British lads of the '30s who went into the military happily, hoping for an escape from his working class neighborhood. Chas was assigned to the Middle East, and within a year, he was separated from his company in the desert and captured by the Germans. He was held as a prisoner in North Africa, shipped in a cargo vessel across the Mediterranean, and sent to a prison camp in Northern Italy. He escaped across the Alps toward Switzerland, was re-captured just outside the Swiss border, was shipped to a POW camp in Germany, and escaped again near the end of the war.
In this book, Chas describes life as a prisoner during that nightmarish period of world history. He tells of the treatments of prisoners by the Germans vs. the Italians, of the tensions among the prisoners, of the kind of work the men did and the kind of food they ate. Some of the stories are humorous, filled with the small joys only a prisoner can find. Others are tense and frightening: getting into a fist fight with a guard, being discovered in an escape attempt, standing before a firing squad, smuggling food into a barracks. Through it all, Chas maintains his strong love of country and his fierce sense of pride. He comes out of the experience a changed man. Not changed the way he'd wanted to be when he longed to escape his neighborhood, but changed in the way such daily confrontations with death and starvation might change a person: Giving him a recognition of life as a gift, as a daily joy to be appreciated, not taken for granted.

Caught between two worlds.......2001-05-05
Kerry S. Walters has written one of the best studies of 18th century religion yet produced. Benjamin Franklin is a difficult subject, in part because as Walters puts it, Franklin "wrote both too much and too little about his religious thought." (p. 4) Different historians read the same documents and come up with radically different interpretations of their meaning. Walters, however, has produced a nuanced study, sensitive to the wider religous context in which Franklin lived his life, and profoundly learned too in the cultural and intellectual developments of the Atlantic enlightenment. By meticuously locating Franklin within this larger context, he has written a work which sheds insight both into Franklin himself, as well as the larger society in which he lived. To do this in 151 pages of lucid and economical prose is quite a worthy achievement.
Walters argues that Franklin's religious views developed in tension between two ultimately irreconciliable religious traditions. On the one hand was the Calvinism of his native Boston, the faith of his father, with its sophisticated Augustinian piety. On the other hand was the "New Learning" which captivated so many polite and cultivated men and women on both sides of the Atlantic, the faith of men like Isaac Newton or John Locke, with its concomitant liberal Christian emphasis on the capacity of human reason to arrive at religous truth. As a young man, Franklin wavered, adhering first to the one and then the other.
As a mature adult, however, Franklin came to accept the ambiguity of his earlier commitments. "Recognizing that a Newtonian-inspired deism was spiritually impoverished, but unable either rationally or emotionally to return to the orthodoxy of his boyhood, he was at loose ends for a few years," Walters argues. But in 1728 Franklin found a way to reconcile the contradiction. "The solution he arrived at--his doctrine of theistic perspectivism--enabled him to escape from the mechanistically sterile cosmos into which he had drifted without falling back into a Calvinist worldview whose central tenets he found unacceptable." (p. 12)
As Walters explains, Franklin's perspectivism stemmed from a belief in an inaccessible God, which humans symbolically represent to themselves in order to establish an emotional and intellectual relationshop with the divine. This means that while God *is*, there are various human representations of God as well. "These anthropomorphized conceptions of the divine," Walters writes, "serve as the foci for personal adoration as well as sectarian theologizing." (p. 10) The result, then, is a commitment to religious toleration because human representions of the divine are culturally and historically bounded. Human religous traditions, to the extent that they share the same purposes, contain some worth.
In arguing for this understanding of religion--an understanding which arises from the tension between the two religious traditions within which Franklin was working--Walters can explain Franklin's religous statements with a cogency missing from earlier accounts. While Walter's statement of Franklin's perspectivism may sound superficially anachronistic, that is a misreading of this work. This is a terrific exercise in intellectual and relgious history, and Walter's demonstrates convincingly the historical origins in Franklin's thought of the theology he discusses.
Franklin an existentialist?.......2001-03-14
I really like this book, even though I'm not sure I agree with its spin on Franklin's religion. Walters argues that Ben is a "perspectivist"--basically, a proponent of religious fictions that he knows have no objective basis, but which he thinks are necessary for psychological health and social stability. The case is well presented and nicely written. (Would that all historians wrote as well!) But I can't help thinking that Franklin comes out more of a twentieth-century existentialist than he is--complete with religious angst and identity crisis. What the heck, though. This is one good book. My guess is that it's going to make a lot of people mad--especially those good American Christians who want to think that all the "Founding Fathers" of the USA were also Christians. As Walters demonstrates, it just ain't so.
Wow!.......2001-02-24
I've read a lot of books about Franklin, but this one is in a class of its own. It's a psycho-biography (kinda) that traces Franklin's religious development from his early childhood through the rest of his life. Nope, he's not the deist we learned about in school. Instead, he's what Walters calls a "perspectivist." If that sounds boring or dry, think again. The book reads like a novel. I definitely recommend this one. It puts a new spin on old Benjamin. My only objection is that sometimes you have to wonder how much of this is Walters, and how much Franklin. So it loses one star.
Advance praise for Benjamin Franklin and His Gods.......1999-02-23
"An exceptionally fine piece of scholarship on an exceedingly complex figure and subject. Walters has done a superb job of assimilating an enormous body of scholarship on various aspects of Franklin's personal and intellectual life and an even more daunting body of Franklin's own prose. A remarkably clear, straightforward, and patient account of the extremely vexed issues surrounding Franklin's religious thought." Ronald A. Bosco, editor of The Complete Sermons of Ralph Waldo Emerson

Incredible Book for Tweens and Teens.......2006-12-19
This book has a wealth of information for girls. There are a lot of quizzes that encourage a child to participate and buy into what they are reading. It covers more topics that I would even think to instruct my daughter about. I am very impressed with this book and would highly recommend it as required reading for tween to teen girls.
Perfect pitch........2002-10-19
As a new volunteer Big Sister, I hoped this would help break the ice with my "little." We pass the book back and forth every week, each of us doing the exercises and writing comments in the margins. I can barely keep up with her! The author has perfect pitch when it comes to keeping girls interested, enthusiastic, and building self awareness and confidence.
Brave New Girls: Creative Ideas To Help Girls Be Confident,.......2000-06-28
I am a teacher of troubled middle and high school girls and boys. I have used this book with some of my students. It has given them new perspectives. It is so easy and dangerous to live life according to the assumptions of one's particular culture. This book helps them see beyond that. It helps girls especially see that they can achieve their goals by following the simple exercises. It brings awareness to them of the methods of the media which attempts to characterize them into a single mold. It is introspective and enlightening. I recommend this book for anyone who works with young people and those who care about their welfare.
An excellent resource for teen-age girls!.......1999-03-08
I was highly impressed by this book and can't wait to use it with my teen-age Girl Scout troop. My daughter (13) picked up the book and read it through. She thought the exercises were interesting, up-to-date and ones that she would like to do herself and with her friends. The situations are very true to the lives of teenagers today and the language is not "preachy" or "fake". I would highly recommend it to any teen-age girl.
Excellent!.......1998-09-18
Brave New Girls can really build self-esteem and self-confidence. The tone is upbeat and honest, never condescending, and occasionally conspiratorial. Many of the exercises help to see other people's point of view; also included are exercises to help girls value their own opinions. Many of the activities and exercises focus on thinking a problem through, using common sense, and figuring out what kind of person you are. This book suggests all kinds of possibilities for public library programming.

Customer Reviews:
A quick reference guide.......2006-04-29
A paraphrase from the opening lines of Joanna Simon's book on the same topic summarises the situation well: "The complete guide to matching food and wine does not exist....yet". However, Mary Dowey's book does an admirable job for the foodie wanting a logical wine recommendation, with a clear explanation of why the match should work. The book is easy to read, and is organised by dinner party courses, so the host should design the menu, and can then match wines accordingly. The images used in this book do an excellent job of making the mouth water, but I would have preferred them to be more prescriptive (ie. present comparative examples of colours and wine styles with the same food, or the same wines with a range of different dishes to help foodies who are planning a theme to their dinner parties). Otherwise, I found this book very useful, and still refer to it occasionally, when stuck for a wine and food match.

Customer Reviews:
Thanks to Barbara G Walker, I can knit!.......2007-03-10
Although I learned the basics many years ago, I have always been a very mediocre knitter. I have never attempted lace, cables, or multi color patterns, and aside from a few children's sweaters and simple socks, I have never completed a major handknitting project.
This book has been sitting on my bookshelf for several years now, but I never seemed to have the time or nerve to begin. Finally determined to master the craft, a few weeks ago I obtained a few pounds of yarn, a pair of short #8 needles, and I finally began to work my way through. I have just finished square 21, the gorgeous 'Florentine Frieze', and I can feel my skills and confidence improve with each square. The knit-purl combination, slip stitch and mosaic patterned squares have each turned out beautifully and I am eager to get to twisted stitch paterns, cables, and lace. There is even a square to teach short-rowing.
My goal is to finish this afghan over the next two or three months. By then I believe I'll have the skills to complete any project, including a number of one of a kind sweaters that I plan to design and knit with the aid of Knitware software, this book, and/or Ms Walker's other stitch treasuries, all of which are indispensible to any serious knitting student's library.
Enjoyable easy steps.......2006-11-13
I have knit five of the squares since receiving the book, and am enjoying trying new stitch patterns on such small do-able squares which remove the drudgery of having to create a whole garment.
There is good explanation of how to do various techniques such as slip stitching, joining new colours etc. However, I did not find the book's instruction very clear on how to actually knit the basic knit/purl stitches, how to control the tension, how to hold the needles etc. For that, I had to turn to the internet where there are various free instructional videos demonstrating the Continental technique used in this book.
I expect to be pleased with my finished afghan, but as I will not be learning any shaping techniques (decreasing/increasing) I do not feel that I will be confident to knit a garment right away after completing this book.
wonderful way to improve knitting skills.......2005-10-20
I'm enjoying working the squares, because they are so portable with instructions that are easy to follow. I am very glad I made this purchase, because learning these skills will allow me to knit those sweaters I'm dreaming of. Here's a tip: Wooden needles don't show up on the xray of airport security, so I was able to knit on the plane from LA to Orlando. Great way to pass the time.
Techniques & More.......2005-09-06
I love this "how to" book! This is a comprehensive study in many stitches, techniques, and explanations of the various aspects of knitting. The ease of transporting your work as you knit each square is a plus as well.
It's a wonderful teaching tool for beginners, but just as great for intermediate knitters. There is something to learn with just about every square, and when you finish, you've got an afghan!
I highly recommend Learn to Knit Afghan Book by Barbara Walker, as her illlustrations and directions are clear and very easy to follow.
Lace and Cables and much else for new knitters.......2004-01-17
When I was young and Richard Nixon was in the White House...I knew how to knit and purl and that was about it. I had never done a project. I had made a rather dinky scarf, but that was about the extent of it. Somebody else had to cast on and bind off for me.
Almost 30 years ago, I saw Barbara Walker's book and immediately purchased it. Then I got the yarn. I worked through all the squares in a few months--I could have gone quicker but was also going to graduate school, had an infant. Not only was the afghan beautiful, but Walker's notes were so helpful and abundant that I had no trouble whatsoever. Walker really helps you to learn to identify the sundry scenarios that yarn on the needle can create and also to demystify it.
I emerged from the experience and went on to knit fisherman sweaters, lacy christening gowns, and was able to take on any pattern I encountered.
Walker's book is somewhat like going to university and then to graduate school in knitting: I really can't think of any technique that she did not explain.
It's a great first project since it will teach you everything you need to know to do almost any knitting project. I felt as if I had been awarded a Ph.D. in knitting by the time I completed the afghan. It's enormously gratifying to move from little knowledge to creating cables and lace in a matter of weeks.
Since then, I've made several more Learn to Knit afghans in many different colours. I have used Walker's other knitting pattern books to substitute squares when I've wanted more of a challenge.
Other great aspects of this project are its portability; the immediate satisfaction of completing a square and looking at the results, and its beauty. You can use as many colors as you like, or you can limit yourself to two colors.
Customer Reviews:
Practical learning.......2000-03-14
For many years I tried unsuccessfully to learn to knit. Then I found Ms. Walker's Learn to Knit Afghan Book in a craft book club. The method she teaches holds the yarn the European way, which keeps the learner from having to throw the yarn with the right hand, risking dropped stitches. The format of the book gives large pictures of each pattern with explicit and well-defined instructions. The pattern difficulty graduates from simple to amazingly difficult, each pattern making its own afghan square. My son still has the afghan I made with this book 20 years ago, and I want to make one for me now to review these stitches. However, I loaned my copy and the borrower got carried away with it. Now, that's a wonderful book--worth taking! (or giving or receiving)

One tragedy but millions of positives?.......2006-10-11
I followed this book when pregnant with my daughter. I was terribly ill at the time and hoped to have a healthy pregnancy. I felt great throughout my pregnancy and it went by-the-book and even better. My delivery was quick and by the book, too. I only felt some pain the last hour of my labor. My dr. asked ME what was I doing? I only gained 25# and lost it all soon after through following this book. My daughter was born full term, Apgar of 10, is now 30 and people always remark at her beauty. I don't ever remember reading to give a child only goats milk and barley water. She recommends healthy natural foods, too, including carbs, proteins, fats, etc. I nursed my daughter then gave her goats milk as she grew then switched to cow's milk along with a healthy diet. I also don't remember reading to give a child so much potassium! I gave my daughter a pinch of potassium and pantothenic acid in water whenever she had a tummy upset and it instantly cured it! No colicky nights. She slept 4 hours from birth, and through the night soon after. Of course you must use common sense in everything you do. With the Internet, you can check anything before giving it! How tragic for the child that died but how many children died from any other method of care?
Thumbs up to Adelle.......2006-03-16
After 10 years of using and researching Adelles books and nutrition suggestions I totally applied them to my last pregnancy. She was our "test baby". By that time I was fully confident in Adelles research. Our baby is now 19 years old and she was the epitome of health until the age of 17 when I could no longer control her nutrition and she finally got strep throat. She was never sick until the age of 17. Never had an ear infection or an antibiotic until 17. If she ever got the sniffles as a child they were quick and light and gone the next day. She is a stunningly beautiful (due to excellent bone structure), mentally gifted young woman with lovely skin and sparkling eyes and a zest for life. There are some cases where people (as people will be) misunderstand Adelles writings. She was not the only author voicing all the things Adelle voiced, but she was the only one to address the entire human body at once with whole body applied nutrition which made her books easier to read and understand. Often people think if 100 mg is good then 1000 mg must be better and in the cases of certain supplements like Potassium Chloride that is not the case. In almost all cases, the information Adelle wrote about is still considered valid today with very few exceptions. I have been studying nutrition now for 30 years and she is still my mainstay. She was an amazing, brilliant, courageous woman to be admired. As in ALL writings on any subject, use your common sense along with it. Don't mis- read what an author writes. I read, test, re-test and re-test again, starting in smaller doses and working up, while also researching other authors works on the same subject. I have never found anything Adelle wrote to ever be dangerous if applied properly as she described.
Worked for Me.......2005-11-19
About a year before I got pregnant with my son, I began following the guidelines in this book and in her publication, Eat Right to Stay Fit. Surprisingly, the fatigue I had suffered from for a decade vanished and has not returned. My son weighed 10 pounds at birth with an APGAR score of 10. Today he's working on his PhD in bioengineering.
Research now being done at McGill University shows that "the activity of a mouse's genes can be influenced by food supplements eaten by its mother just prior to, or during, very early pregnancy." Specific food supplements given during critical development periods or with a single dose can potentially permanently change behavior or health, for the better or worse. While the reseach is limited to animals for now, future treatments for humans are possible.
I would recommend reading this book even today but I would weigh her recommendations against newer research. For example, raw milk is no longer considered safe and honey is not to be given to infants. Also, a number of the supplements she recommends are incorporated into today's prenatal vitamins. But the focus on everything you eat as potentially influencing your child's wellbeing and future life is absolutely valid.
Please do not buy this book!.......2005-04-11
In 1978, two month old Ryan Pitzer died when his mother followed the advice in this book, giving him about three-quarters of a teaspoon of potassium chloride to treat colic. Potassium chloride causes cardiac arrest in large doses. Why would Adelle Davis publish advice that actually kills people? My guess is that she had no idea what she was talking about. "Adelle Davis used to say that she never saw anyone get cancer who drank a quart of milk daily, as she did. She stopped saying that when she died of cancer in 1974." Please don't follow the advice in this book unless a REAL doctor approves it.
A little outdated, but still good.......2005-03-07
If all you get out of this book is that nutrition is very important to the development of a child, then it's worth whatever you paid for it. While some of the advice is outdated, much of it is good.

Be Careful: Research the Author.......2006-01-12
From quackwatch.com
"At the 1969 White House Conference on Food and Nutrition, the panel on deception and misinformation agreed that Davis was probably the most damaging source of false nutrition information in the nation. Most of her ideas were harmless unless carried to extremes, but some were very dangerous. For example, she recommended magnesium as a treatment for epilepsy, potassium chloride for certain patients with kidney disease, and megadoses of vitamins A and D for other conditions.
...
In 1971, a four-year-old victim of Davis's advice was hospitalized at the University of California Medical Center in San Francisco. The child appeared pale and chronically ill. She was having diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and loss of hair. Her liver and spleen were enlarged, and other signs suggested she had a brain tumor. Her mother, "a food faddist who read Adelle Davis religiously," had been giving her large doses of vitamins A and D plus calcium lactate. Fortunately, when these supplements were stopped, the little girl's condition improved.
Little Eliza Young was not so fortunate. During her first year of life she was given "generous amounts" of vitamin A as recommended in Let's Have Healthy Children. As a result, according to the suit filed in 1971 against Davis and her publisher, Eliza's growth was permanently stunted. The estate of Adelle Davis settled in 1976 for $150,000.
Two-month-old Ryan Pitzer was even less fortunate [4]. According to the suit filed by his parents, Ryan was killed in 1978 by the administration of potassium chloride for colic as suggested in the same book. The suit was settled out of court for a total of $160,000-$25,000 from the publisher, $75,000 from Davis's estate, and $60,000 from the potassium product's manufacturer. After the suit was filed, the book was recalled from bookstores, but it was reissued after changes were made by a physician allied with the health-food industry.
...
In 1972, a group of distinguished nutritionists had an opportunity to ask Davis to indicate what scientific evidence backed up many of her speculations. Like most food faddists, she did not base her ideas on such evidence. To question after question, she answered, "I will accept your criticism," "I could be wrong" or "I'm not saying it does." [8] But she never told her followers that many of her claims had no factual basis or could be harmful.
Adelle Davis used to say that she never saw anyone get cancer who drank a quart of milk daily, as she did. She stopped saying that when she died of cancer in 1974, leaving behind her a trail of ten million books and a following that was large, devoted, and misinformed. Her influence has faded, but not to zero. In 2005, an 11-month-old boy who was raised on barley water and goats milk as recommended in Let's Have Healthy Children wound up with severe anemia due to vitamin deficiency [9]. The treating physicians said he was lucky to escape brain damage."
This book is a must-read for pregnant women.......2005-08-24
Adelle Davis knows what she is talking about - every remedy in this book for the aches and pains and many discomforts of pregnancy works when you apply it. A friend who had just had a baby gave me this book when I was about 6 months pregnant. I went from being nauseaus every day for 6 months, with swollen feet, aching back and limbs, unable to sleep, to feeling comfortable and sleeping well by applying the nutritional principles in this book. There is so much great information in here that so many people are completely unaware of - I'm ordering a third copy now for another pregnant friend. I have also given this book to a friend who had been trying to conceive for 2 years. Highly recommended!!!

Having a beautiful child.......2006-07-06
One of the unique things about this book is its explanation of exactly which types of nutritional deficiencies cause children to look plain or even ugly, and which types of nutrition allow your child to be as beautiful as possible. It was unbelievable to learn how much of a child's looks depend on developing bone structure! Now when I look at children, I often see the results of good and bad nutrition, which I would once have blamed on genetic inheritance from parents. Considering the huge impact that healthy, attractive appearance has on a child's life, this book is worth ten times its price for this one chapter alone.
Let's Have Healthy Chilren by Adele Davis.......2001-12-10
I love this book, in fact I love all of her books on nutrition. They have helped me physically and without a doubt I wouidn't be as healthy as I am today. I bought this book after my 2nd child, I wished I had read it before my 1st pregnancy. When I found out that I was pregnant a 3rd time I followed all her advice. I drank the energy shakes, I took the supplements, and I had so much energy...I had no problems with this pregnancy. My blood pressure was normal, no backaches, no charlie horses, etc. I continued her advice after my baby arrived...she nursed very well and was so content. Adele Davis was a a women and nutritonist ahead of her time.

Book Description
By the time she stepped down in 1990, Margaret Thatcher had become one of her generation's outstanding political leaders, and perhaps the most powerful woman in the world. Possessing an iron will, she matched words with action in confronting the crises of the day in economic affairs, in the Falklands War, in Northern Ireland, in the great twilight struggle of the Cold War and finally in Europe. Under her leadership, Britain broke out of its decline and self-doubt to emerge once more as a major player on the international stage.
Margaret Thatcher put intense effort into her major speeches. As a result, they are uniquely revealing of how she developed that clear vision which would transform Britain and help shape international politics in the late 20th century. They begin with the speeches she made as part of her campaign to mold the ideas of the Conservative Party in Opposition. They continue with the famous addresses in which she expressed her convictions as prime minister and include recent lectures in which she gives her current, and controversial, thoughts about the world today.
This book of speeches is an essential companion volume to the two books of Margaret Thatcher's memoirs, as well as a masterly study of one of the great political figures of our time.

For serious politicos/students only..........2003-05-28
There was once a time when orations and speeches of major players cast the mold for society and its subsequent historical frame. In the era of soundbites, that is far from true today. Speeches tend to be ignored save for the soundbites, and if the major points cannot be put into bulleted forms for display in the blue box above the newsanchor's shoulder, then often it will be ignored.
I wasn't sure if this book of speeches was intended to be the third of a three-volume set of Margaret Thatcher's autobiography. I bought it, having worked in Parliament during her time and having taken a degree in the field. But as I re-read the speeches, they were often far less remarkable in print than I remember (those which I do remember, that is). And as for speeches delivered on the floor of the House of Commons, there is no way any verbatim transcript can convey the mood and atmosphere of the House -- Hansard recounting was often dry and dull when what I would remember would be uproarious.
I found myself actually longing for a bulleted-point summary of each speech so that I could more easily find the important bits. The life Thatcher is able to give to her words fall flat on a printed page removed in time from the events surounding the speeches.
This book will be invaluable to that very small number who make a special study of political communications. I cannot imagine this book being of any wider interest, as the interesting bits will be found in the more interesting biographical volumes. I've not noticed this volume being remaindered to a large extent, which means the publishing house which miscalculated the demand for Thatcher's second volume 'The Path to Power' realised the blunder in time to make this volume remain an expensive one to be had.
Thus, you've got to really want it. And, in my opinion, unless you're a British political scholar, you won't.
Please do not misunderstand me in this appraisal. Thatcher is a brilliant speaker. However, few politicians are gifted with circumstances that lend themselves to timeless speeches; the relatively few instances where the actually speeches will be relevant for the overall history of Thatcher's period have those necessary pieces already incorporated into the other history texts.
beyond admirable and impressive; often BREATHTAKINGLY MOVING.......2003-05-11
.
First published in 1997, and after the tremendous success of her memoirs "The Downing Street Years" and "The Path to Power", gathers fifty-nine of the Iron Lady's speeches, from her years as leader of the opposition, to her years as prime minister, to the time she stepped down in 1990, and through 1996.
Edited by Robin Harris, her trusted aide and adviser, a member of the prime minister's Policy Unit, director of the the Conservative Research Department, and a regular contributor to British, European and American publications. Neither the brief introductions to each speech nor the footnotes are ever verbose--providing backgrounds which only help in setting out its context.
Divided into The Opposition Years, The First Parliament, The Second Parliament, The Third Parliament, and After Downing Street, it is a most impressive selection from among Lady Thatcher's vast collection of speeches hitherto--the ones marking the most dramatic events of her time (the party conferences in opposition, the brief statement as she entered 10 Downing Street, after the IRA bombing in Brighton, amid the Falklands crisis, the Libya debate, the Gulf Crisis, and the speeches to The European Union and The House of Lords)--intensely revealing her character and unshakeable beliefs.
The impression one gets is of one who is not merely stubborn--she passionately stands on her principles, unwavering in the face of even the most vehement opposition, and never shy to explain WHY. One who, whether in opposition, in power or after, did not merely go where the wind was already blowing--she moulded the Conservative Party to her convictions, inspired even the initially-oblivious, convinced the sceptical, led the opposed, woke Britain from its self-doubt and decline, leading it to a renewed role in international affairs that lives to this day. And while she is said to have put intense effort into the drafting and polishing of each of her speeches, it is the genuine belief she had in, and her thorough mastery of every subject she spoke of or against (whether it was the Conservative Party, or Britain, or European affairs, or the partnership with America) that renders each speech most effective, if not at times breathtakingly moving.
Whether in admiration of Margaret Thatcher, or from a desire to study The Tories, or Britain, or great speeches, this is one book deserving of a place in one's study.

This is one very big book.......2001-05-09
I tell you, it's not easy to memorise every speech in this - but I'm working on it! An inspiring book by a very sexy lady.
not boring at all - good material, excellently written !.......2000-12-31
It is rare for books of 'collected speeches' or 'collected writings' not to be boring. But this book isn't. Perhaps because most if not all the speeches are thrilling and interesting, perhaps because they are excellently edited and written, perhaps because of their layout... All these things enabled the Rt. Hon. Lady Margaret The Baroness Thatcher to compile a truly fascinating collection of Her speeches during, before, and after Her years at Downing Street. For those interested in Thatcherism and British politics in general, this book will be an immensely valuable source of material, filled with easy-to-find data, information, and The Baroness Thatcher's views, on a variety of topics and issues, from Europe to the Falklands War, from international politics to tarde unions and taxing... For those of you who share the views and like the ways of The Baroness Thatcher, the book will be even more wonderful, as you'll be able to figure Her speak and debate, as if She were there, as you leaf through this excellent collection of Her speeches. For all others, it will still be excellent reading, pleasant and memorable.
The Collected Speeches of Margaret Thatcher.......2000-07-27
Margaret Thatcher dominated her party at a time when her party dominated British politics. This book is a valuable record of her formal speeches and the key parlamentary debates in which she took part. Robin Harris' editng makes the book easy to read and the policical philosophy of Margaret Thatcher comes through clearly from almost every page. In spite of the fact that he is obviously a commited supporter his notes and critiques of the individual speeches are relitivly disinterested and help to put them into context. Most interesting to me are the speeches made in the lengthy period during the mid 1980's when Margaret Thatcher gave few interviews; these formal speeches and her apparances in the House of Commons were the only means that the British electorate had of understanding overall government policy during that time. I was never a Thatcher supporter and believe she was ultimatly a extremely distructive politician who did infanatly more harm than good. This book, however, gives an excellent insight into the political philosophy behind the Thatcher phonominon and also gives clear clues as to why she was brought down so dramatically. A must for anyone who has any interest in post war British politics.
