Probably a very good resource for individuals beginning their research in thyroid problems, a trustworthy source, but this book provided no new information and did not address the problem of continued fatigue, immune deficiency, etc. that comes along with hypothyroid despite the fact that numbers are okay.

Very informative and easy to understand.......2005-05-27

I found this book really informative and easy to read. I usually don't write reviews but had to take exception to a previous reviewer comment. The book does say that the disease can be easily diagnosed and then goes on to say many people are not diagnosed. This is just the point, if it's easy why are they not getting diagnosed? The book goes on to say that in many cases it's because the tests are simply not run and that it is often due to the cost involved. I happen to be particularly sensitive to this point and I couldn't agree more.

If you don't have a lot of background on this topic or are not in the medical profession than I would suggest this book. It is written in plain speak and is very informative.

Disappointing, Rehash of the Same Old Info.......2005-05-25

Coming from Harvard, I was hoping for much more, but I found this book a disappointment.

Here's a direct quote from the introduction to the book.

"Thyroid diseases are easily diagnosed with a simple blood test and easily treated."

Just this statement alone was enough to tell me that this book is not dealing in the reality of thyroid disease. There are more than 20 million people with thyroid disease (not the 12 million the author quotes) and half of them are undiagnosed. If it's so easily diagnosed and treated, this would not be the case.

If you want more than "easy to diagnose, easy to treat" -- and let's face it, patients deserve more than that -- you're better off with any of the books by the Shameses, Mary Shomon, Elaine Moore, or Ridha Arem.

Perfect hard biscotti.......2003-04-06

I've just baked my first biscotti from this book (Double Chocolate Almond Biscotti). I tried to follow the recipe precisely but I didn't have parchment paper so I used greased foil, I didn't have almond extract, I put chocolate chips in the dough instead of almonds, the egg & sugar mixture would not thicken AND the dough was so sticky it would not form into a log as was needed so I wet my hands & shaped it as best I could AND....... oh my god it came out perfect...d elicious.... fabulous!!!
So this recipe is a keeper. Hope the rest are the same but I'm really into chocolate biscotti for now so I'll experiment with that.
P.S, there is no butter in the recipes! This is for the figure conscious eater!

Best of the 3 biscotti books I purchased.......2003-02-27

I have tried several of the recipes, with great results.
The US measurements haven't been a problem for this Kiwi cook - if the mix is a bit dry or moist I just add a little more of the wet or dry ingredients.

No need for the food processing equipment mentioned, I have coped without quite happily...

Can't believe they're low fat!.......2001-10-01

I've made many of the biscotti in this book and they've all turned out wonderfully. I especially like the espresso biscotti. It is easy to substitute ingredients -- I've added jalepano peppers to the sesame biscotti to rave reviews. I haven't purchased all the extracts suggested, but the baking parchment is a must.

This book's got lots of excellent biscotti recipes, and I'm having fun trying a new one each week. Cranberry Pistachio was great, as were the Orange Almond.... Can't wait to try the Pignoli. Recipes are easy to follow, and produce great results. I like the fact that they aren't all sweet, and that they don't all require a food processor, etc. Her suggestions about the King Arthur Baker's catalogue for specific ingredients are great.

Benissimo! The folks at work are enjoying the results.

Great treats and easy to make.......1999-11-08

This is a great book if you have made biscotti before or are just getting into it. You'll discover that it isnt difficult to make great looking cookies and all my friends were very impressed. There are helpful hints about baking and ingredients as well as the recipes. The sweet cookie recipes are imaginative although they sometimes call for hard to find ingredients. There is also a section of recipes for appetizer style biscotti--not sweet but a great replacement for breads. Overall, a useful book that will bring you compliments.

This fully illustrated, 1,080 page handbook solves current practical engineering problems in the design of the pressure resistant acrylic plastic viewports in the entire pressure range from full vacuum to 20,000 psi (138 Mpa).

This fully documented design handbook is ideally suited for engineers, designers, operators, and inspectors of pressure vessels who need to know and understand the technology of viewport and hyperbaric chamber development. In addition, the safety factors recommended for the design, to preclude catastrophic failure, are covered in a separate section of the ANSI/ASME PVHO-1 Safety Standard.

Materials, fabrication processes, distribution of stresses and strains in standard window shapes, critical pressures, bonding techniques, deterioration of acrylic material, and surface finishes are all discussed for the benefit of the designer. Solutions to Design Problems in Clear Engineering Language.......2004-02-29

As a designer, I am often at a loss to find a handbook that in clear enginering language presents the solutions to my design problems. I have found 'The Handbook of Acrylics for Submersibles, Hyperbaric Chambers and Aquaria' by Dr J D Stachiw to be such a publication. It truly explains in plain language all the criteria affecting the design of acrylic pressure resistant structural components. I use it frequently.

Good book for patterns, good book for the coffee table.......2007-03-14

This book has some pretty interesting paterns for scarves made by celebrities. This book also has some bio information on the people who made the scarves, and proceeds go to benefit a great cause. A lot of the yarns featured are not easily found locally, so substitutions may be required. All in all, I would recommend this book.

This is a must have if you want to run a campaign in the DS9 portion of the terrific game by Unicorn. It contains a gamemaster screen with tables for weapons, movement, maneuvers and more. It also contains a book which helps to develop a good story line with excellant background info on Bajorians, Cardies, and Ferengi. If you don't have it...get it. I love mine.

Too simplistic.......2007-03-30

I found this book to be too simplistic. The information is accurate but weak on ways to correct the problem. As a psychologist who treats anxiety and hyperventilation, I guess I was expecting too much. I always hope for some new technique or way of explaining things that will be useful with clients, or even a book I would recommend to clients. About the only thing I found potentially useful were the workbook forms at the end of the book.

This book might be helpful to someone with almost no knowledge of hyperventilation. But then the person would probably be much better of in treatment with a knowledgeable biofeedback therapist or anxiety specialist. Also, the author's emphasis on physical therapists as breathing experts is peculiar to New Zealand. PTs in the US would not be my first choice to treat hyperventilation or anxiety. I'd look for a mental health or biofeedback professional with experience in treating anxiety and hyperventilation.

Hyperventilation is directly related to a variety of diseases, particularly stress disorders, i.e., anxiety & panic. This book will show you the whys, whens, and hows to understand and work to alleviate one of the roots of your troubles.

This 6th volume confirms JL-M among century's best diarists.......2000-12-04

This volume, the sixth of James Lees-Milnes' incomparable diaries, confirms his undeservedly minor reputation as one of the best diarists of the second half of the twentieth century. Covering 1973 and 1974 he records life with his wife Alvilde, both then in their early sixties. Although he had retired from the National Trust and they were based at Alderley Grange, their comfortable house and garden in Gloucestershire, Lees-Milne continues to visit London and a variety of country houses; but now as a friend of the owners (and occasionally as a celebrated expert). Alvilde was a formidable, cultivated, socially gregarious character who widened her husband's already wide circle of smart and aristocratic friends and acquaintances. Ancient family retainers, old neighbours, dukes, duchesses, and members of the Royal Family are encountered and keenly observed. Jeremy Paxman described the early wartime diaries as "suffused with the aroma of decline" but with many of those crumbling houses saved, it is now his friends who are ailing, along with Dutch elms throughout the country, and (in his reactionary eyes) the country itself which he sees as riven by socialism, strikes and IRA bombs. He deplores beards and flares, bad manners and most of all philistines but he manages to do so without appearing especially priggish or prim. His style has been described as "purple-ish mandarin" but the elegant combination of self-irony, detachment, modesty and waspishness (and none of the tact he displayed to his hosts) makes for compelling reading. Like any good diarist he reveals as much of himself as others. His prejudices are predictable and sharply expressed but not unexpected for someone of his class and generation. He regarded political correctness as deceitful and admitted to being an unashamed elitist. In the canon of twentieth century diarists, James Lees-Milne shines brightest. While Sir Henry 'Chips' Channon lustrously captured the glamorous centre of political and aristocratic world of London in the thirties and forties, his conceit and lack of personal candour leave him a somewhat unsympathetic figure. Cecil Beaton's diaries are full of vivid descriptions and fascinating insights into an equally glamorous but wider world than Chips Channon's but again they tend to lack the personal touch. Evelyn Waugh's diaries are brilliantly readable but as they were invariably written at night after he had eaten and drunk well, they lack the sparkle of his letters (which were usually written in the morning). The only other diarist with whom he might be compared is Frances Partridge, the very last of the Bloomsberries. The worlds of these two diarists occasionally intersect but Mrs Partridge's is more confined and, given her sympathetic and tolerant nature, her life and thus her diaries are all too often peopled by bores. James Lees-Milne died in 1997, aged 89, and so his readers can hope for another two decades of diaries to follow Ancient as the Hills. Mark McGinness

Barry was one of the best Irish boxers in modern times and he deserves a better biography than this. No wonder he had another one written later.

Any boxing fans out there should probably pass on this one.
