5 out of 5 stars A better idea of how things were.......2002-01-18

I really enjoyed this book. It gave me new insight into how different things were not that long ago. I never thought about horse drawn carriages being a regular part of "recent" history. This book did what history classes never have done, tell me how things really were in the recent past. It helped me realise the rapid changes that the USA has gone through. Also, it made me realise how close we are to the era of the great depression.

5 out of 5 stars Great story!.......2002-01-11

About a life that spans a time from horse drawn buggies through the start of the nuclear submarine era. An easy read and very enjoyable. Especially enjoyed the info on the rescue of President Bush and the declassified submarine patrol logs.

5 out of 5 stars Great autobiography!.......2002-01-08

If you are curious to know what sort of person would volunteer to serve on a submarine during WWII when 1 out of 7 died during this service, this book describes the outstanding courage of this patriotic young man who grew up during the Great Depression and who served on the U.S.S. Finback. Learn about the rescue of young pilot George Bush after his plane crashed into the ocean. Our country owes much to dedicated men like these! More of our veterans should record their experiences for our history books.

5 out of 5 stars Provoking Exploration of Biography and Philosophical Theory.......2005-02-09

Linda Bell's book divides, not so neatly, into two broad sections: a biographical exploration of her life (a coming-of-age and awareness) and the philosophical issues that have given meaning to the life she describes in honest and open reflection.

A feminist, who learned first-hand what sexism was in the halls of the academy, Bell's writing indicates that to think, to explore one's life in a disciplined fashion, can take one far from the environment in which one was raised, educated, and employed. In fact, a thoughtful consideration of the issues Bell raises are not only appropriate for those who consider themselves "philosophers", but are topics all humans should deal with in our ever more complex society.

Well done.

4 out of 5 stars Very helpful book.......2007-03-31

I found this book to be an excellent source of information. I especially appreciate how the author compares and contrasts western medicine with oriental medicine. That alone gave me a wonderful perspective to start with. If you are interested in alternative health and not fond of medical/pharmaceutical answers, this book is a super resource. The included body/organ diagrams are very helpful.

2 out of 5 stars not based on science or medical fact.......2006-01-07

This book is based more on traditional asian beliefs and leaves science and medical research behind. Though I do believe in energy meridians and that there is a mind body conection, I find it hard to belive some of what I read (i.e. if you have large nostrils then you have strong lungs, if you have small nostrils, you have weak lungs, if you have a large nostril on the right and a small one on the left, you have a strong right lung and a weak left lung.... what about DNA? genetics? Can't it mean your mom or dad had a big honker??) The author states that many generations ago people have happier faces because they were more spiritualy balanced. ( I've seen pictures of my great grand parents and they looked like they weren't too happy, they had a hard way of life) He writes that now people are getting longer canine teeth and pointed ears because we eat too much meat and use cell phones too much ( there are pictures drawn that show a wolf-boy face with vampire fangs and pointed "vulcan" ears). The book had some interesting theories, but I wouldn't totally ignore what the AMA has to say either.

5 out of 5 stars Great book on reading the body's health.......2005-03-05

Mort is right. This book helps you to recognize what organs in your body are not working as well as they could be from diet, etc. Such as white dots people have under their eyes have to do with too much fat in the diet. White dots in the lips have to do with blood not flowing properly through the small intestines & poor digestion or food allergies. How your shoes are worn down even shows organ health, much less your nails (ridges mean a lot, shape, etc.), laugh lines have to do with digestion, lines between the eyes have to do with liver, etc., etc. etc. It is very true & I have had many of these signs & they have disappeared by changing my diet.
This book is laid out very simple for anyone to follow even with those who find their local newspaper hard to read due to complicated volcabulary. The MANY simple but accurate drawings make it easy to compare to your own body or friend's as well.

To the reviewer who doesn't believe, Chinese Medicine has been around for thousands of years & people are realizing it has many truths for it, especially for long-term diseases since they are due to the body being unable to deal with poor diet, environmental toxins, poor sleep habits, etc.
Many studies have proven it's not fat, sugar in a diet that kills you, it's the TYPE of fat or sugar. Many pacific islanders, Asians, Eskimos live on high fat diet but never had cancer or heart disease... not until we came around & introduced CANDY BARS... processed chemical-laded baked goods...
Has Western medicine cured cancer or heart disease? Even they admit most has to do these factors, but they make no money telling you to change your diet & no body wants to bother, they just want a pill that masks the body's attempts to let you know something is wrong before it's too late. Every day more people are finally getting off processed artificial foods and toxins because finally enough people know that is the culprit and spreading the word out verbally and their their good health & good moods.
Many studies have proven genetics does play 1/3 of your chance of getting cancer/diabetes, heart disease, but that leaves 2/3 up to your own lifestyle choices. If you have good health, you mind will work better, you daily mood will be better, therefore better work, more quality friends, and so on like dominoes for a happy, satisfying life.

5 out of 5 stars Humour & the best book.......2001-06-03

OK, I happen to be a relative, but that has nothing to do with my review of this book. Well, maybe a little, but the fact is, I'm no bartender. I don't have the know-how to mix drinks properly and I found this book REALLY easy to use. The arrangement by types of liquor make this guide truly idiot proof (no pun intended!).
It's a great bar companion especially when my more liquor adventurous guests are around and they want a drink even they don't know how to make.
Kudos to Amy for creating such a simple yet so useful guide!

This is a great book, despite the illiterate review below. I've never looked for a drink at home to make that I couldn't find in this book -- and the other drink/recipe "bibles" leave out the interesting information on the various spirits and histories. It's a staple on my cookbook shelves where more than a few "idiot's" or "dummies" book sit next to the French Laundry Cookbook.

"The Complete Idiot's Guide to Mixing Drinks" is a wonderful book, filled with anecdotes, tips, and histories of spirits. It takes a basic, straightfoward approach to bartending that is easy to understand and use. The book is very thorough, and is best used in conjunction with a simple recipe book. It is NOT simply a book of recipes, however. I find it to be far superior to similar books (i.e. "Bartending for Dummies.")

            Book Description

Shibori is the Japanese art of what is popularly known as tie-dye. But this ancient resist-dyeing technique goes far beyond the simple craft that is typically used to embellish T-shirts. In Shibori: Creating Color & Texture on Silk, artist Karren K. Brito demonstrates the modern American rendition of shibori, or prismatic shibori, in which colored silk is pleated and tied around a pole, then overdyed. Only the tops of the pleats absorb the color fully so the hues shift subtly to create a shimmering iridescence. The book opens with a fascinating overview of the influences on the American version of the shibori technique. Then, it moves on to explain other important aspects of this unique process: "Dyeing Essentials," for example, discusses how to work with silk and acid dyes, which are easier to use and more environmentally sound than fiber-reactive or vat dyes; "Creating Resists" illustrates several styles of resist, each of which produces stunning color combinations and elegant pleated effects. Each step in the process is presented separately so that readers can combine them to create their own unique shibori designs. What's more, this wonderful guide brims with lavish, full-color photography as well as dazzling examples from prominent American shibori artists.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on how to make shibori.......2007-03-17

If you want to make shibori, then you should have this book. While you are at it, order two, one for the studio and one for the library. I'm wearing out my studio copy. Brilliant ad beautiful. Clear, concise information that will light up your imagination.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos; short on technique.......2006-03-27

I really like this book, but it is not a textbook on how-to techniques. It gives a good overview of dye and pleating methods, but does not go into the detail I would like to see. It would be difficult to recreate any of the beautiful garments pictured, using just the information contained in the book. So, buy it for the photos and inspiration, not as a how-to book to create the garments pictured.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful Photographs with Useful Information.......2006-03-08

Essentially divided into two sections, Shibori: Creating Color and Texture on Silk, gives useful information on Shibori and contains beautiful photographs of the technique. The first half of the book describes: the properties of silk; the different classes of dyes available (with recommendations); the equipment needed; the actual dye process and; the importance of color interactions. The second half describes specific Shibori techniques such as sewn resists, clamp resists and pole wrapping. The 2 pages devoted to "setting" texture seemed, in comparison to the descriptions of the dyes and dye processes, abbreviated and could have done with an illustration or two. If you are the type of person who wants the essential facts presented quickly, clearly and concisely, then this may not be the book for you. If you enjoy having an overview of things before beginning work, then Shirbori: Creating Color & Texture on Silk may be just right.

5 out of 5 stars Shibori: Creating color and texture on silk.......2005-07-25

Real eye candy! Good information on acid dyes and an excellent chapter on discharge techniques.

5 out of 5 stars Education and Inspiration for Dyers and Fiber Artists.......2004-02-11

This book is a wonderful educational sourcebook for any dyer. The pieces shown in the book are elegant and sohisticated - grown folks fabrics. Mysterious, subtle, three-dimensional pieces. Silk is her fiber of choice yet the information in the book would be useful to anyone interested in dyeing any fiber.
Admittedly I am a baby dyer, however I do have a lot of experience in the area of learning processes from books. This book is all I had hoped for and more. Ms. Brito tells us what her aims are in creating this book. Her aims happen to coincide with my desires as a student: to inspire the reader with the artistic possibilities of shibori and at the same time provide the reader with technical information on a level that high standards will become a natural occurrence as one begins to understand and learn this process.

This book is not for the reader who is looking for shortcuts or baggie dyeing. Ms. Brito is a chemist and an artist. She explains the different dye types and processes very clearly. She even allows us to see her set-up. Discharge, various resist methods, overdyeing, setting texture and great photographs are only part of what this generous artist shares. She provides excercises that encourage observation and experimentation. That is how many of us are best educated. She offers formulas for different colors including neutrals so the reader has a good starting point.

I don't want the reader of this review to think that the book is so technical that it is inaccessible. It is both technical and reader friendly. The book is also great eye candy. This book belongs in the library of all fiber artists!

I was so pleased about "Good Parents Bad Parenting". I normally don't write reviews but feel this book deserves one. It is a great book for anyone who is a parent. It address most if not all parenting situations and offers great tools on how to better yourself as a parent, a spouse and a person.

It also never made me feel like I was a bad parent. It only inspired me to be a better one.

5 out of 5 stars One Great Parenting Book!!!!.......2006-03-04

Obviously Mamma Bamma did not read Good Parents Bad Parenting. This book was nothing on how she described it. Lisa Dunning offered great support and advice for parents to get on the same page. The book never blamed parents nor did it imply if you did x then you are a bad parent, only the contrary. Good Parents Bad Parenting was a very supportive and well thought out book. There were also a lot of research and support to back up Lisa Dunning's views.

I recommend this book to everyone who is a parent-It really helped my realtionship with my husband as well as improved my parenting skills.

What I *wanted* was a book to help me figure out how to find common ground on parenting issues about which me & my spouse disagree. (You know, stuff like discussions about Should a SAHM have more "weight" in her say since she is home all day? Should we each parent according to our skills & comfort levels, as long as we agree on basic concepts like behavior guidelines, etc.?) All I got was a litany of "if you do X you're being a Bad Parent; Good Parents do Y instead." This book was less than helpful.

5 out of 5 stars A great parenting book for couples.......2004-03-05

Good Parents Bad Parenting helped me so much with my family. Finally a book that discusses both parents point of views.

I loved working on mine and my husband's family history. It explained a lot on how and why we both parent the way we do.

Bravo to you Lisa-I can't wait for your next book!

5 out of 5 stars A practicle Guide to Parenting.......2004-02-26

"Good Parents Bad Parenting" explained how and why I keep repeating the same mistakes my parents made. Lisa Dunning offered great suggestions on how to break those patterns.

"Good Parents Bad Parenting" is a great reference guide for me. This is the parenting book I have been searching for.

                          Thank you Lisa!

The love story unfolds through Maars striking photographs of Picasso and their brilliant friends, most of them artists and writers; in his famous weeping woman portraits of her; and in Mary Ann Caws revealing text. The book is an enthralling revelation of the lives of a wholly exceptional circle of friends.

5 out of 5 stars More than just an inspiration for the art of another .......2006-05-01

Dora Maar was according to most observers the woman in Picasso's life , closest to being at his own level of artistic perception and understanding. As this volume makes clear she was an outstanding photographer . The story of her relationship with Picasso, the part she played as inspiration and model for his work, her special role in regard to Guernica, her being the weeping woman of the famous painting, his abandoning her when he sensed ( or so he claimed) her impending madness, her passionate clinging to his memory, her breakdown, her turning to a reclusive life and one of deep religious devotion- are all presented in this excellent and clearly written volume.
There are also representations of much of her work, and of Picasso's in which she is subject.
Maar was clearly a considerable personality and artist in her own right, and not simply the inspiration for another.

This is a wonderful book, full of beautiful b/w images of dora, her photography/art and Picasso's work of her and more! It is really worth getting for your book collection, especially at this price, and it gives you an insight to Dora's life, I think she is fascinating woman living in a time when most photographer's were men. She is truely a pioneer and deserves more credit than being known as Picasso's muse. Very inspiring book.

Of some of Dora's photographs, and self portraits are a must have for any Dora fan. It shows her in her later years, it shows her paintings, it goes into detail about her love affair with Picasso as well. This is easily my favorite Dora book.

5 out of 5 stars Dora mysterious, dramatic, definitely not only weeping.......2001-11-09

I would recommend this book to everybody. I am so delighted I purchased this book. It includes everything you need to know about Dora - her personal life before, during and after Picasso. I have always been interested in Picasso and by studying his life, I noticed all the fascinating women in his life. In my opinion, Dora was the one who made a big difference and who had a huge influence on him. Although it was Francoise Gilot, another woman in Picasso's life who gave him two children. Dora's own career and life as an artist (photographer, model, painter) is described in this book from the time she moved to Paris and tried to establish herself as a photographer.

You will not only find Picasso's portraits and drawings of Dora but Dora's own work (a lot of black & white photos taken by her that remind me of Man Ray's work). She truly was a talented artist. This is not often mentioned. Most of the people saw her mainly as Picasso's model and Muse. Dora was a very complex person full of emotions. She could be very dramatic in the way she looked and dressed. This all is revealed in this book. As I said, it has it all: Dora as a private person (Theodora M.) and Dora as an artist, the famous and remarkable Dora Maar. Trust me, with this book, you will get all the information you need. I consider this book a piece of art.

                          5 out of 5 stars Insightful.......2001-01-08

Picasso's Weeping Woman: The Life and Art of Dora Maar

I am grateful for this book. It is insightful but not definitive. It is not an in depth biography of Dora Maar. A better perception of the psyche of Dora Maar is contained in James Lord's personal memoir "Picasso and Dora". And a better understanding of the cruelty of Picasso is presented in Arianna S. Huffington's "Picasso: Creator and Destroyer". Both I think are necessary to truly appreciate this book as I do.

Since Dora Maar's death in 1997, little has yet been published of her work. She is primarily known as one of the mistresses of Picasso but there was a world of complexity to this woman. She was deeply involved with the surrealists before she ever met Picasso. She knew them all, Breton, Tanguy, Man Ray, Hugnet, Crevel. She was a noted photographer, an exhibited painter, a poet and Picasso's muse and inspiration for seven stormy years culminating in a breakdown that left her a changed woman, a recluse and a religious devotee.

Mary Ann Caws book presents a dazzling panorama of works by both Dora Maar and Picasso including some wonderful comparative paintings of both artists. Dora Maar assisted and photographically chronicled Picasso as he created his masterpiece Guernica. That chronicle is beautifully presented in Caws book.

This book is an easy read with gorgeous reproductions of photographs, painting, sculpture, and poetry throughout not only from Dora Maar but also from Paul Eluard, André du Bouchet and others. It is a great visual companion piece to books on Picasso's works, photography and surrealism. It will occupy that regrettably tiny portion of my bookshelf devoted to Dora Maar. Thank you Mary Ann Caws for this delightful book

                          Book Description

This fresh and vivid portrait of the postwar Paris art world, written by a member of Picasso’s circle, sheds original new light on the greatest of modern artists and on the most important and least-known of his loves, the alluring and formidable photographer and painter Dora Maar.

                          5 out of 5 stars THAT Man!.......2003-03-04

Grrrrrrrr! Picasso didn't know how to love anybody Dora stated. A compelling love story between a man who was an artist and a woman who was not only a photographer but a painter. She is very sensitive and grows very quiet in her later years, a recluse almost. And she said she never forgot about him.

5 out of 5 stars The story of a friendship.......1999-09-24

Picasso & Dora is the story of a friendship, but not that of Picasso and Dora. Rather it is the story of the friendship of the author and the mysterious Dora Maar. Both these characters are fascinating personalities, as they move in close and then distance themselves. The fact that Lord is a gay man in love, in his own way, with Dora adds a complexity and richness to the story. It is reminsicent of Isherwood and Sally Bowles and Capote and Holly Golightly. There is a special poignancy to the story of a gay man who loves a woman, yet cannot offer her the love she really wants. Lord writes exceptionally well and Dora, who died just recently at an advanced age, lives on in his words.
