        Book Description

any people don't realize that the simple daily act of eating can be a profound catalyst for spiritual growth, from experiencing a renewed sense of vitality to living a richer and more satisfying life. That's because each time we eat we have the opportunity to pay attention, care for ourselves, and feed the real source of our hunger: our spirit. Nourishment isn't a fad diet but a lifelong journey, and Hal Sofia Schatz is the ideal guide. Gentle, wise, and humorous, she shows us how to feed our Buddha within. A perfect blend of inspirational guidance and practical suggestions, If the Buddha Came to Dinner includes guidelines for selecting vital foods, tips for keeping your energy balanced throughout the day, a cleansing program, and recipes to awaken your palate.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-08-01

The basic premise of this book is that if the Buddha (or insert your own spiritual role model here) came to dinner, you would probably prepare food with much more care, love, and attention that you would for just yourself -- you wouldn't just dump something out of a can and chow it down in front of the television. The book is about learning to love yourself and nourish yourself in that same way, and realizing that you are deserving of this attention. It is a book not just about food, but about life and learning to live it without just going through the motions. It explains why whole foods are more nourishing for your body, and has some wonderful recipes in the back. I think it is an excellent read for those who are looking for a more mindful way of living.

4 out of 5 stars Easy read/not so easy concept.......2007-03-13

This book is great. I love the idea of fasting, eating according to my senses and only eating what's in season in my vicinity. But how realistic is THAT for most people? I tried it, but man, here in the high desert, that really limits what I'm eating. This woman teaches and writes beautifully. Her recipes are amazing. Oh, and her website is beautiful, go check it out.

        5 out of 5 stars A "must have" book..........2006-08-11

I just finished reading "If the Buddha Came to Dinner". I thoroughly enjoyed it. One reading isn't enough, I find myself paging through it and stopping at certain sections from time to time. I tried a few recipes and really like them. I just ordered it for a friend of mine. The book speaks to your body and soul.

5 out of 5 stars changed my life.......2005-12-22

I went on the three-week cleanse and have never felt better. Weight loss, while a goal for me, was secondary to how I felt and the concept of nourishing rather than feeding oneself. (I did lose 20 pounds on the 3 week cleanse.) Be warned though - if you choose to cleanse for 3 weeks it requires a time commitment. I found it helpful to actually plan out a week's menu (for shopping, prep and diverisifcation of meals).

Recipes are good and very versatile. I have several friends who are now also interested in "clean" food and love coming to my house for dinner - even the skeptics.

5 out of 5 stars Food for thought?.......2004-05-11

If The Buddha Came to Dinner is a wonderful opportunity to connect with the entire wholeness of food and feel great. This book illustrates that, as people, we often eat in our busy lives without connecting to the food. This is easily evident in everything fast these days. The book shows us how to take an opportunity we all have several times a day to connect with food and the spirituality that it feeds.

The book takes you through a very manageable cleanse with many great healthy happy and delicious recipes. Looking at food in this manner has guided me to more clarity, energy, focus, and curiosity in ways to eat refreshingly.

I am grateful to Hale for pointing out a simple and fun way to understand the importance of to whom we feed and how we feed it. This has shown us a way to access a stronger and vivid connection just by looking into what we eat to make us thrive.

I hope there will be more books by this author to come.

I am thoroughly enjoying reading this book, and I know it will be invaluable to me as a continuing reference source.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos, useful text...........2006-01-22

Now this is a nice book. FINE GARDENING DESIGN GUIDES are nifty because the editors have compiled several of the better articles (sans advertisements) about container gardening found in back issues of FG into "creative ideas from America's best gardeners." GARDENING IN CONTAINERS, for example, includes several pieces by Sydney Eddison, who just published a book on container gardening, that I enjoyed very much, in which her ideas from her various articles were combined (along with many of the same photos), thus, for me at least, these articles are complementary if not redundant. Okay, it never hurts to read something more than once, and the book saves me going through all those back issues of FG, which is why I bought it to begin with, but GARDENING IN CONTAINERS also reminds me of other points of view.

As advertised, the book includes many creative ideas, some of which I noted in passing when I read the original article in my FG magazines, thinking to myself "I'll get back to that." What I would like to get back to is building planting boxes, making willow trellises, and installing a small water garden in a continer (Better Homes and Gardens CONTINER GARDEN has many more ideas for this type of garden). Ideas for all three are included along with photos of topiary and penthouse roof gardens if you are so inclined.

Some but not all of the projects in this book are a bit pricey, but most can be adapted to the smaller purse. They can definitely be used in the smaller spaces.

Kids, parents, and power struggles--the inseparable triad of family life. What if you could avoid Machiavellian peacekeeping maneuverings and instead turn difficult situations with your child into jumping-off points to having a better and more productive relationship? Mary Sheedy Kurcinka's new book gives a concise, practical, and often humorous account of how to achieve this turnaround. Kurcinka doesn't promise miracle cures or overnight success, but by building on Daniel Goleman's groundbreaking work in Emotional Intelligence, she offers creative techniques for using power struggles as pathways to better understanding within any family. Drawing on her clinical experience with numerous real-life families, Kurcinka builds up an image of the parent as an "emotion coach," whose role is to build a strong, connected "team" by understanding the players' strengths and weaknesses and showing by instruction and example how best to play the game. The techniques she outlines are useful for children of any age--in fact, the younger, the better--and are based on firm guidelines and mutual respect. In sections such as "Bringing Down the Intensity," "Enforcing Your Standards," and "Teaching Life's Essential Skills," Kurcinka addresses the causes of power struggles rather than just the symptoms, so that families can reduce the pain of repeated conflict. By the end of the book, any parent should feel confident in applying the principles. --Katherine Ferguson

Noted family educator Mary Sheedy Kurcinka struck a national chord with her bestselling Raising Your Spirited Child. Now she hits upon another crucial parenting topic: coping with the everyday challenges of disciplining your child, while understanding the issues behind his or her behavior. In Kids, Parents, and Power Struggles, she offers unique approaches to solving the daily, and often draining, power struggles between you and your child. Kurcinka views these conflicts as rich opportunities to teach your child essential life skills, like how to deal with strong emotions and problem solve. With her successful strategies, you'll be able to identify the trigger situations that set off these struggles and get to the root of the emotions and needs of you and your child.

                    5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-08-13

What I liked most about this book is that I felt like you could read one chapter, work on some things then read the next. I don't have time to sit down & read a whole book but a chapter or 2 per week works for me.

It really makes a lot of sense that your children have so many different emotions but don't know how to express them. I read this at the same time as siblings without rivalry and they really complemented each other.

5 out of 5 stars great advice for parents.......2006-11-10

This is a very helpful, practical, easy to use and understand guide for how to see things from a different perspective when it comes to dealing with your children. Eminently and infinitely helpful...highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Great book for parents who want some guidance.......2006-08-22

I haven't completely finished this book, but love it. It offers wonderful advice on how to work with and connect with your child vs. fighting with them. The chapter on temperment has been an eye-opener for me. I better understand why my daughter and I often have struggles and now have the ability to create strategies to avoid those struggles. I highly recommend this book. It's hard to find the time to read when you're a busy parent, but make time for this one.

                    5 out of 5 stars A constant companion.......2006-06-30

This book stays in my backpack -- like diapers and wipes, I never know when I might need it.

5 out of 5 stars Very pleased with book!.......2006-03-03

This book is the type that you don't want to put down once you start reading it. I am learning so much about temperament and personality types, my own and my kids, and learning to understand that each difficult power struggle is an opportunity to TEACH your kids about how they can respond or react to their feelings and to learn about themselves. Since I've started reading this book, I have noticed a significant change in my reaction to them when my kids have a melt down, which is hard to prevent after a long day at school, or my reaction when they make a mess. Instead of yelling I try to express my self and TEACH them. I think this book should be read by every parent, because I know I never learned about temperament when I was growing up, and I have a doctorate. I will tell my husband to read it and also my parents, since they interact with my kids as well. If it's hard to listen to your kids, because they test you all the time (which it was for me), this gives you a new perspective and gives you a purpose in which to approach each power struggle. Enjoy!!!

                          Book Description

In 1946, the young English artist Raymond Mason, having already quit his native Midlands for the Royal College of Art and later the Slade School, packed his bags for Paris, then the undisputed artistic capital of the world. There he found himself thrust into the company of some of the greatest figures of twentieth-century art, from Balthus to Duchamp, Giacometti, and Picasso, and, inspired by their example, set about making his own distinctive contribution to the history of modern sculpture.

In this memoir, Mason vividly conjures up the golden age of the Parisian art world. The cultural impresarios Jean Cocteau and André Malraux, the dealers Claude Bernard, Aimé Maeght, and Pierre Matisse, and the interactions of visiting British artists Henry Moore and Francis Bacon with the "locals"—all figure in Mason's entertaining account as he pays a by-no-means uncritical tribute to the masters of European modernism.

By turns humorous and passionate, Mason also reflects on a variety of other subjects, including Parisian architecture, the development of his own oeuvre, and the work of artists from Hogarth to Rodin. These passages by an articulate artist writing about art complete an enjoyable and thoroughly spirited volume. 25 b/w illustrations.
