Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A terrific contribution to Civil War studies........2000-04-04

Excellent in-depth coverage for those who want more than the usual cursory overview. R. Thomas Campbell's Sea Hawk Of The Confederacy brings drama to the naval war, providing both a biography of Charles W. Read, a Confederate Navy officer whose battles were legendary, and a narrative style which reads like a novel while incorporating plenty of strategy and military facts.

5 out of 5 stars A Long Overdue Tribute to an Exciting Confederate Navy Hero.......1999-12-16

Thomas Campbell's latest addition to his several other books on the Confederate Navy is the most exciting, as an 'old, mostly unknown' hero emerges to the spotlight he so well deserves. This first, complete biography of Lt. Charles W. Read, CSN, skillfully weaves various obscure sources of information, mostly unknown except to serious students of the Confederate Navy, to new family histories recently discovered. Many of the generous number of photographs have never been seen in public before. Read's participation on such ships as the CSS McRAE, ARKANSAS, FLORIDA AND WEBB are but a portion of the many thrilling experiences he originated and encountered. A brief history of each of the ships such as with Capt. Maffitt on the CSS FLORIDA fills the reader with anticipation of the next chase and adventure. Charles Read's overland escapades will surprise many students of the army to find they were done by navy personnel. In short, this book is a must for anyone who wants to learn of a true life adventurer and to ask themselves "why haven't we heard of him before?". Thomas Campbell is to be commended for this work. Book Description

For Rousseau, "consecrating one's life to the truth" (his personal credo) meant publicly taking responsibility for what one publishes and only publishing what would be of public benefit. Christopher Kelly argues that this commitment is central to understanding the relationship between Rousseau's writings and his political philosophy.
Unlike many other writers of his day, Rousseau refused to publish anonymously, even though he risked persecution for his writings. But Rousseau felt that authors must be self-restrained, as well as bold, and must carefully consider the potential political effects of what they might publish: sometimes seeking the good conflicts with writing the truth. Kelly shows how this understanding of public authorship played a crucial role in Rousseau's conception—and practice—of citizenship and political action.

Rousseau as Author will be a groundbreaking book not just for Rousseau scholars, but for anyone studying Enlightenment ideas about authorship and responsibility.

            Book Description

For many centuries Tibetan Buddhists have used a traditional collection of pithy, penetrating slogans to help them develop equanimity, intelligence, and compassion amid the turbulence of daily life. This boxed set presents all the tools needed to learn this transformative practice (called lojong in Tibetan), presented in Pema's accessible, down-to-earth style. The Compassion Box contains a set of finely produced cards presenting fifty-nine powerful maxims, including "Don't be swayed by external circumstances," "Don't be so predictable," and "Be grateful to everyone." The cards can be displayed at work or home for guidance and inspiration throughout the day. On the reverse side of each card Pema offers new, illuminating, and inspiring commentary on how to understand and apply the maxims. The Compassion Box includes: 59 two-color cards, with a Buddhist slogan on one side and original commentary by Pema Chödrön on the other
Guided instructions on how to use the cards as part of a daily spiritual practice
            A fold-out card stand
A 288-page paperback, Start Where You Are: A Guide to Compassionate Living, a popular guide to understanding and applying the slogans
A 45-minute audio CD of Pema Chödrön offering in-depth instruction on tonglen meditation ("taking in and sending out"), a powerful practice that anyone can undertake to awaken the heart

5 out of 5 stars Open the Compassion Box .......2005-05-11

If Pandora's Box opened the world to alot of the ills of negative behavior then this lovely collection from Pema Chodron is the beautiful opposite! Compassion is one of the hardest abilities in a world of ambition, greed, and competition. Centuries of buddhist wisdom are encapsulated in this wonder tool. Use this to create a habit and pattern of compassion for yourself and others. Buddha once said that all that we are begins with our thoughts, and with our thoughts we make the world. Used daily and in the moments when compassion is most called for ... the compassion box allows us to re-create our inner world ... and see the fruits of this change in our outer reality. People, place, situations, and events do not change. We can only change ourselves, our perceptions, and interact from a place of compassion and self-love. Then ... our buddha nature reaps rewards. Make compassion work for you!

            5 out of 5 stars Priceless.......2004-04-25

The essence of Buddhism, really, is practice...as opposed to belief in a doctrine. This package is such a beautifully done description of and means to the fundamental practice of compassion. It is truly one of my most treasured possessions.

5 out of 5 stars Peaceful, Practical, Valuable.......2003-11-01

I received "The Compassion Box" as a gift, not knowing at all what to expect.

The first thing I did was pop in the CD and was immediately intrigued by Pema Chodron's voice and her message. She explains the principles of Tonglen meditation very simply so that if you have this product, you can begin practicing immediately.

The Lojong cards are excellent supports as well, keeping you centered on a different principle or technique every day.

As a Non-Buddhist, I found this product exceptionally valuable to teach me how to begin implementing this beautiful practice into my life in a way which will have a significant impact on my being.

            3 out of 5 stars Quiet Beauty.......2006-09-02

I bought this set mostly for the little statue, but I like the book, it's full of lovely images of Kuan Yin. The statue itself is quite pretty. This would make a nice gift, or an addition to a home altar.

1 out of 5 stars Do NOT rely upon this Book.......2006-07-05

I ordered this Kit so I could review it for my students.
            Although the Statue is lovely
the book that comes with it
            is full of glaring errors.

If someone wants an introduction to the Buddha of Compassion
they are far better off with:

"Chenrezig, Lord of Love: Principles and Methods of Deity Meditation"

            or

"Trainings in Compassion : Manuals on the Meditation of Avalokiteshvara"

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to Kwan Yin.......2005-07-10

I really like this set. A relatively inexpensive introduction to Kwan Yin for those who are interested in her but don't have a lot of money to spend. It even includes a statue and an "instant shrine".

5 out of 5 stars Lovely figurine, artfully presented little book.......2005-06-06

I got this boxed set as a birthday gift, and I don't think it is in any way "tacky" or "uninspired" as another reviewer here has stated. I think the little statue of Kuan Yin is nicely done, and the cardboard "shrine" actually has a rather nice look and feel to it. I have it and the figurine displayed on my desk, and I find it very pleasant to look at. No, it is no replacement for going to a dedicated, ancient Kuan Yin temple, but it is a good place to find your center during the day.

As for the book, I find it too to be lovingly executed. It provides a nice overview of Kuan Yin's history and importance, background on sutras and some basic meditations, etc. No, you are not going to be writing a master's thesis on Buddhism with this book, but that is not what it is for. It is meant to be a gentle introduction to Kuan Yin, and inspirational. I feel it satisfies in both regards.

Give or receive this nice little boxed set with an open heart, and it will find a way to inspire and soothe.

            5 out of 5 stars Kuan Yin.......2005-05-24

I am very pleased with this. The figurine is nice and very detailed. The book has many picture along with some information, rituals and meditations.

Glass in one hand, fork in the other, Brian St. Pierre explores the regional wines and cuisines of Italy in this dream of a cookbook. As you'd expect from the author of A Perfect Glass of Wine, St. Pierre brings to the table fabulous recipes and inspired wine pairings. Whether it's a hearty barolo from Piedmont in the northwest that complements a pan-roasted veal tenderloin, a refreshing pinot grigio from the shores of the Adriatic paired with succulent risotto di frutti di mare, or a glass of easy-going Apulia primitivo from the southern reaches to enjoy with the rosemary and oregano notes of slow-baked lamb, each wine suggestion is designed to enhance the flavor of the recipe. The sweeter side of the wine spectrum is also represented with such treats as zuppa inglese with strawberries served alongside a glass of sparkling prosecco a finish with flourish to a remarkable meal. With a glossary of wine terms and gorgeous photographs of both the wine and the food, this stylish cookbook is as beautiful as it is informative.

5 out of 5 stars Useful, beautiful cookbook and reference guide.......2006-12-28

This lovely cookbook is also a valuable reference guide for anyone interested in learning more about wine and the art of wine-pairing with food. Italy grows a vast variety of wine grapes and produces many different types of wine, a fact which can be incredibly intimidating and confusing to those unfamiliar with the country's wines beyond the now ubiquitous Chianti and Pinot Grigio. This book takes a look at each of the regions of Italy, the primary wines produced in each, and typical dishes from the region that pair well with these wines.

The writing is easy to follow and the history behind some of these wines quite fascinating. I wish I'd had this book before a recent trip to Florence, as it would have helped me tremendously with deciphering wine lists and making good choices of wine pairings. The recipies range from simple salads to more complex roasts, but should not be too intimidating to most people with some cooking experience.

The only thing that might have been nice to include would have been a breakdown of wine labelling as used on Italian wines, to help the reader understand how to find all the information on what can sometimes be complicated labels--especially for those who do not speak or read Italian.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book about Italian Wine and Food!.......2006-07-10

A passionate home cook that has been honing her cooking skills for the last 25 years, concentrating on Italian cooking for the last 10 years, writes this review. My favorite cookbooks are "The Professional Chef" by the Culinary Institute and "Culinary Artistry". With more than 500 cookbooks in my collection I am usually disappointed in my recent cookbook acquisitions. However, I feel that this book is a nice addition to any cookbook library.

The book is subdivided as follows:
                  Introduction
                  .....Italian Wine: The New Renaissance
                  .....Matching Italian Wine and Food

                  .....Adriatic: Emilia-Romagna, Marches, Abruzzo, Molise
                  .....South: Apulia, Basilicata, Calabria, Campania
                  .....Islands: Sicily, Sardinia, Lipari, Pantelleria
                  .....Desserts

                  .....Olive Oil
                  .....Italian Cheese

If you love Italian wine and good food this is a nice book to add to your library. The information on Italian wine alone is worth the price of the book. I thought that I was very familiar with Italian wine and I learned quite a bit from this book. The book covers all the major Italian wines in reasonable detail. Many of the minor Italian wines are also covered, a few I had not yet discovered.

For each major wine the author spells out the following information:
                  1. Narrative regarding a history of the wine
                  2. Typical aromas and Flavors of the wine
                  3. Tips to Successful Matches for that particular wine.

For each recipe that is included in the book the author offers two wine selections. The recipes are solid, mostly classics but some with a spin. Many of the recipes are simple Italian fare, but some of them have more of a gourmet twist. There are dishes in this book for carnivores and vegetarians a like. There are even a few vegan dishes in the book. The recipe for Polenta, Pesto and Red Pepper Terrine was excellent even without the goat cheese, which I omitted to make the dish vegan. Most of the recipes have a corresponding full color photograph of the finished dish. The recipe directions are clearly written and easy to follow.

If you love Italian wine and good food I think you will enjoy this book, I know I do.

All new gardeners need a basic plant encyclopedia as one of their first reference books. This pocket-size guide is just that, a great source for identifying and caring for plants from anemones to yuccas. Close-up color photos will aid any gardener attempting to name that funny-looking flower by the door, or which type of maple is living in your new back yard. Because this book is arranged alphabetically, complete novices will find it easier to search by looking at the pictures than by using the names--quick, what's a papaver rhoeas?

The planting guide, which includes a brightly colored zonal map, is divided into sections of both plant groupings (colorful foliage, good in containers) and climate concerns (shade, drought). By cross-referencing these areas, beginners will have a selection of sure-fire winners for their first attempts. While you'll be tempted to dive right into choosing plants, take a moment to read the introduction--you'll find the planting code hidden there, and it's better to have those mysterious symbols decoded from the start.

The glossy cover and sturdy binding make this a great little title to drag right out in to the garden with you. The cover wipes clean easily, and the folding inside flap makes a handy place marker. --Jill Lightner

2 out of 5 stars American Horticultural Society Great Plant Guid (American Horticultural Society Practical Guides).......2007-01-03

Not a real user friendly book. It's small size would be nice if you wanted to take it say as a dictionary with you to the nursery. Otherwise, save your money. There are many many more books on the market that would be a better buy for your money.

                      4 out of 5 stars It's so handy..........2005-07-25

The AHSGPG is a wonderful little book. It has practically every living plant known to man. Not only does it give descriptions on plants/trees/shrubs, but this book also gives you a climate planting guide, as well as suggestions on the different kinds of plants to plant in different areas of the U.S. Even small container gardens, shade gardens, full sun gardens along with different soil limitations. It's small size is what I love...small enough to tuck in a purse when going plant shopping!

3 out of 5 stars Nice book, but not for everyone.......2004-07-07

I think this is a very nice book; it is very informative. However, I was surprised when I received it that it was pocket sized and the typeface was very small. It can be difficult to read for some people.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring Collection of Dreamy Plants.......2004-07-07

If you dream of finding beautiful flowers, the new updated and revised American Horticultural Society Great Plant Guide is impressive. With over 3000 recommended plants and guides for plants for containers, this book was rather handy when planting a new container garden.

On page 674 and 675 you can find a Plant Heat-Zone Map which gives 12 heat zones. Most plants are featured with a picture and short description. Then, you can find symbols for the preferred soil type, sun/shade preferences and hardiness zone ranges. The plants without pictures are listed in The Planting Guide and feature trees, shrubs, climbers, perennials and bulbs suitable for specific site or garden situations.

                      Features:

Advice on how to buy plants through the mail
                      How to choose healthy bulbs
                      Understanding Plant Names
                      Plants to attract Birds
                      Plants to attract Butterflies
Plants for Cold or Warm Walls
                      Flower for drying or cutting
                      Architectural plants
                      Cottage-garden-style plants
                      Trees for Small gardens
                      Flowering hedges

You can look up a flower in the index. Like, say "Petunia." This gives you a few names and then you can search for advice on how/where to plant your favorites.

Since I just moved further away from my dear mother, we have both planted Petunias. So now when we look out of our window to our planters, we will think of each other. It was my mother's idea and she loves gardening. My grandmother used to grow roses and it seems everyone in my family has a green thumb. Our family loves going to gardens and learning flower names. This book is perfect for travel and is very useful when shopping for plants that have not yet bloomed. You can quickly look up names of plants alphabetically.

For more detailed information on Container Gardening, look up the book by the same name by Paul Williams. His book taught me the best way to create an inspiring masterpiece.

Now onto dreaming about planting a new lavender garden in the near future. I am also intrigued by some of the vines in this book. The blue trumpet vine looks interesting and in the zone I'm living in, I could quite possibly grow a passionflower vine. Seattle and Issaquah were a bit too cold and rainy. There are some stunning flower selections interspersed with familiar flower faces.

If it was my choice, I'd spend all my time writing, cooking and planting flowers while listening to inspiring music. What a life! This book is sure to inspire some of your own gardening dreams.

                      Book Description

Does My Child Have Autism? is a question so many parents are asking themselves today. Is he avoiding eye contact? Why can’t she talk? Is my child’s development normal or does he have an Autism Spectrum Disorder? Parents know that if their child is somewhere on that spectrum, they need to intervene as early as possible to maximize the benefits of early intervention. This groundbreaking book, by one of the foremost experts, teachers, and clinicians in the field, provides a guide for parents about what to look for at home at twenty-four months or even earlier, what to do, and how to get the right kind of help from doctors, counselors, therapists, and other professionals.

5 out of 5 stars great starting point.......2007-08-03

I read this book when our state EI specialists told us that our son had developmental delays, but they weren't sure if he was autistic or not (he had symptoms both ways). It was a great place to start for me and helped me formulate questions for the therapist and the developmental peditrician (our next stop). I really liked the chapter on how to help your child at home. I also enjoyed the real examples and advice from parents.

4 out of 5 stars Good start but see a Dr. too.......2006-11-02

An excellent book to get you started down what could be a very long road. It might be helpful to know ahead of going to see a developmental pediatrician that your child might have a developmental disorder. However I would not use this book as the end all and to diagnose (and I don't think the author would either).

Once you know for sure (after getting the diagnosis from your Doctor) try "Overcoming Autism" as a next step book. And settle in for a lot of reading. Stay away from the "simple cure" books too. There is a lot (too much) information out there. Take it one step at a time and talk to other parents too.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for parents of young children with possible Autism.......2006-08-25

I am an employee of the school system and work with many youth who have autism. I frequently look for resources to recommend to parents so they can educate themselves about Autism and better help their child in the home environment. Wendy Stone's book would be very helpful for parents who suspect possible Autism in their young child (Under 4 years of age). It discusses what goes into the diagnosis, and emphasizes the point that parents and practitioners can't dwell on one unusual behavior or deficit when considering a diagnosis (as it involves a cluster of behaviors displayed to a certain degree). The book also discusses strategies for parents to help their children in the home environment. A strength of the book, is that it has accounts from a family as they go through the process of diagnosis and treatment. Also, the book informs the reader of what to expect during the evaluation process, and includes frequently asked questions.

Dr. Stone's book is not only educational, but is to-the-point. It is full of figures/tables to help explain the difference of the different spectrum disorders, frequently asked questions, and examples from parents with a child with autism or PDD-NOS. I would highly recommend this book if you are just trying to educate yourself about autism, or if you are truly wondering if your child does, indeed, have autism. The book is well-written and easy for the "lay person" to understand and interpret.
