    Book Description

One man—Capt. Raphael Semmes—dominates the history of Confederate naval operations in the American Civil War. Although the Confederates were hopelessly outnumbered at sea, Semmes roamed the oceans first in the CSS SUMTER and then the CSS ALABAMA, capturing nearly 100 Federal merchant ships and precipitating a flight from the American flag that decimated the Federal merchant marine. Revered in the South as a hero, the North reviled and feared the Yankee-hating Semmes as a pirate. Regardless of his reputation, his wartime exploits were remarkable.

Noted historian and biographer John M. Taylor illustrates how, under Semmes’s command, the ALABAMA became a household name in America and overseas and struck fear into the hearts of ships’ crews and passengers alike. Incredibly, Semmes and the ALABAMA traveled 75,000 miles, and as far east as Singapore, without ever taking refuge in a Confederate port. In 1864, off the coast of Cherbourg, France, the Union’s USS KEARSAGE finally caught up with the Confederate raider and fought the last ever ship-to-ship gun duel between wooden warships.

                      Book Description

Tapping archival sources and Dewey's extensive correspondence, Dalton reveals that Dewey had close personal and intellectual ties to scientists and scholars that were influential in forming the mature expression of his thought. Dalton traces the not-always-smooth pathways that led Dewey to shed his Calvinist upbringing to transform Hegelian phenomenology into a science of mind, to challenge Freudian psychology, and to articulate the central concerns of naturalism and pragmatism. Dewey's relationships with F. M. Alexander, Henri Matisse, Niels Bohr, Myrtle McGraw, and Lawrence K. Frank, among others, show how Dewey drew upon these collaborations to disperse pragmatism throughout American thought and culture.

1 out of 5 stars becoming john dewey; not everyman's book.......2003-08-15

Thomas C. Dalton's book on John Dewey philosophy and its fortunes in American philosophical and scientific circles in the twentieth century is essentially a job in rehabilitation, not scholarship. Dalton is only interested in jousting with various philosophers, active either while Dewey was alive or since his death in 1952; as such it fails as a work of history, for it is advocacy and rehabilitation, at once sentimental and turgid.

                        Book Description

The central idea for this book is that we lack consensus on principles for allocating resources and in the absence of such a consensus we must rely on a fair decision-making process for setting limits on health care. The authors characterize key elements of this process in a variety of health care contexts where such decisions are made- decisions about insurance coverage for new technologies, pharmacy benefit management, the design of physician incentives, contracting for mental health care by public agencies, etc.- and they connect the problem in the U.S. with the same problem in other countries. They provide a cogent analysis of the current situation, lucidly review the usual candidate solutions, and describe their own approach, which represents a clear advance in thinking. Their intended audience is international since the problem of limits cuts across types of health care systems whether or not they have universal coverage.

5 out of 5 stars the perfect creme brulee recipe.......2006-12-16

I've actually only made one recipe from this book so far, the classic brulee, but it is the perfect creme brulee recipe. I had been searching everywhere, trying many different recipes and looking for the perfect creme brulee. Other recipes were too complicated, didn't give the right texture or taste. I guess that I feel that this book is worth the classic recipe in itself. There are some other good ideas/twists on creme brulees and also other ways to brulee other items.

4 out of 5 stars Quick, give me my torch.......2005-03-14

I am a fan of creme brulee. So... when I happened upon this book, I just had to buy it. The pictures alone with get your mouth watering (and each recipe has it's own picture), but it's actually the taste of these recipes that will keep you coming back to this book.

The recipes are well written, easy to follow, and the ingredient list will not scare you off. In fact, you probably have most of the ingredients in your pantry and refrigerator already.

I really like the fact that instructions are given on how to torch the sugar. I know now how far to hold the torch away from the top of the creme as well as how to evenly 'burn' the sugar across the dessert. So with the guidance of this book, my creme brulees look as good as any I order in a restuarant.

So far, I have made the classic creme brulee, the double chocolate, and the pumpkin. Each tasted as luscious as their respective picture.

5 out of 5 stars MY 4 year old daugher LOVES this book.......2006-09-22

My daughter absolutely loves this book. I don't know that it has actually changed her behaviour, but considering it's a book for learning, she loves it. I think it's the illustrations that are particularly inviting and that she relates to. I think she likes to see all the silly things that Max does. I love the oddball sense of rhyming and the brilliant use of colour in the otherwise black and white drawings. And, it makes you feel like you are teaching them imporant lessons.

There is nothing worse than having to deal with a disruptive child who is not yours. The advise in the book comes in a knowing, gentle way from an "older" sib to her younger brother. If we can't have the perfect child train the young one, then this book will do the job. It would be great if the book were handed out with menue's at any restaurant!

4 out of 5 stars Manners, Manners! So Important!.......2005-09-07

This book is geared to our little ones and makes learning manners fun and easy! The message is delivered in rhyme and simple colors that really appeal to my grandchildren. I recommend it to anyone who wants to find an easy way to teach their children how to behave when dining out - and at home!

5 out of 5 stars Chicken Fingers, Mac and Cheese...Why do you Always Have to Say Please?.......2005-09-07

Both of my young children, who are both under the age of 5, and both learning their table manners, thoroughly enjoyed this book! The clever rhymes and cute references really helped in the teaching of why it's important to be polite while eating. I recommend this book to any parent who is looking for a good story to read to their kids, or who has a young child just learning to read. It's fun, yet teaches good lessons.

                          Book Description

If you are stuck for words or creative ideas you should find lots of inspiration in this newly revised edition of Another 500 Heartwarming Expressions For Crafting and Scrapbooking. The third of four books in this popular series, now includes lots more chunky lettering styles, page layout ideas, project instructions and now for the first time, color samples of projects are featured on the back cover. These new projects include a unique baby announcement card that pulls out of a paper `diaper', 3 little angel photo face magnets, a couple of vellum `candle wraps' that literally make photographs glow and four different scrapbook pages. Author, Sandy Redburn explains it was time to revise the books to tie in with their new line of stickers by artist Suzanne Carillo and to showcase more of the creative possibilities the books offer.

The beginning of the book explains how the right expressions can create warmth, personality and convey a special message. Then you get tips and ideas for hand lettering, tracing, photocopying, clipart techniques, and different ways to utilize the book with your computer to create scrapbook pages, cards, crafts and keepsakes. Scrapbooking has become the most popular way to use the books, because you can simply trace or copy any expression or design on vellum or paper and mat it to a scrapbook page or card.

The expressions are different in each book, but they are divided into a large variety of favorite themes and alphabetically tabbed in the top right corner for quick reference. Themes include Angels & Fairies, Babies, Blessings, Christmas, Country, Critters, Family, Fishing, Friendship, Funny Bones, Gardening, Golfing, Halloween, Hobbies, Home, Housework Stinks, Inspirations, Kitchen Quips, Love, Memory Lane, Over The Hill, Profound Proverbs, Sports, Summer Fun and Teddy Bears. You will find everything from heartfelt sentiments, mushy love stuff, inspirational quotes, to feel good sayings and funny quips.

This book discusses garden layout, giving tips on using existing features and adding new ones. It shows styles of brick walls, rates various wall materials (stone, brick, concrete, etc.) in terms of cost, ease of construction, and durability, and also rates fencing materials in the same terms. It discusses hedges, borders, and screening, shows paving options, and devotes a section to a vital (but often neglected) aspect of gardening -- the lawn. You can learn to highlight changes of level or add a fountain. There are tips for maintenance and larger projects throughout the four seasons, as well as pertinent growing information on featured plants. I especially like this part because it gives good tips on "planting partners" for each plant discussed. This book gives a great overview of the myriad of considerations when planning a garden, yet gives enough detail to make great decisions about the garden features and plants.

                          Book Description

Reclaiming the Primal Language of Touch Leaning over a sleeping child, waiting for a small dripping body to emerge from the tub. . . what parent hasn't felt the pull of contradictory emotion: the rush of tenderness, the pang of anxiety--? We know that the physical love between parent and child is both natural and necessary, yet it's a subject we're afraid to approach-indeed, it's been called "the last taboo." In a language both lyrical and provocative, The Eros of Parenthood explores this highly charged and controversial territory. Even to put the two words together-eros and parenthood-is to enter a forbidden realm. Yet the two are inextricably linked. For eros, the energy of connection, fuels the immense labor of parental care, fosters the formation of the human self, and lies at the foundation of all forms of human love. In its intense physicality, the love between parent and young child is similar to that between adult lovers-but it is different in some absolutely crucial ways. Healthy parental love is sheltering, protective. Putting the child's needs first, it respects the inequality-in size, power, and maturity-between parent and child. Alas, in our zeal to protect children from the trauma of sexual abuse, we often resort to black-and-white thinking. Afraid to acknowledge the erotic component of parent-child love, the most innocent interactions become suspect. The atmosphere becomes so saturated with anxiety that it intrudes on the most tender moments between parent and child. Navigating between the extremes of injurious denial and hysterical fear, The Eros of Parenthood finds a middle ground. While celebrating the passion that naturally exists between parent and child, it seeks the limits of this passion. Inspired by the fairy-tale figure of Goldilocks, the book takes as its central question: "Between the poles of too hot and too cold, too much and too little, how can I find the just right?" The answer to this question lies in the power of attunement. A dynamic process of adjustment that balances between fusion and separateness, attunement is the compass in Goldilock's hand, the key to the mystery of intimacy between parent and child. To understand this is to discover a way through the eros of parenthood that, while breaking the grip of fearful dogmatic thinking, leads to an authentic sense of boundary. In poetic prose that encompasses material as subtle as a pregnant mother's dream and as dramatic as the recovered memory of abuse, The Eros of Parenthood breaks new ground. Personal, yet with profoundly social implications, the book's format is highly readable. Each chapter consists of a linked sequence of "explorations" that can be read in a single sitting, in the brief interstices of a busy parent's life. The hardest thing for us, in the wake of what we have too often witnessed, is-while keeping our children safe from harm-to experience the full measure of delight in them. To gaze at them while they sleep-on their backs with limbs flung like the petals of an open flower or curled on their sides like an inner ear. . . . Through responsibility and tender awareness, parents and children can reclaim a form of love that is natural, necessary, and the ground of all human intimacy. AUTHORBIO: Noelle Oxenhandler has been a long time contributor to The New Yorker. The author of A Grief Out of Season, she is a mother of one daughter and lives in northern CaliforniaREVIEW: "I have waited for years for this book! Finally someone talks openly and wisely about the passion any normal parent feels for a child. The fear of molestation is creating a generation of kids that grow up without the joy of healthy physical touch." (Isabelle Allende, author of The House of Spirits, The Daughter of Fortune, and Paula)REVIEW: "Reading The Eros of Parenthood reminds me of the first night my three-year-old daughter saw a country sky full of stars. It is full of the wonder, exhilaration, joy, and mystery of such times. Writing with the ease and intelligence of someone who has known such nights, Noelle Oxenhandler helps us appreciate the aching, tender beauty of parenting. This is a book to treasure." (Mark Epstein, M.D., author of Going on Being, Thoughts of a Thinker, and Going to Pieces Without Falling Apart)REVIEW: "As I read this, I was stunned by how much deep wisdom and psychological sophistication and understanding runs through it. Noelle Oxenhandler has taken the hard won insights of one hundred years of psychoanalysis (about sexuality, gender, bodies, human need, recognition, and human agency) and put them in such accessible and real life terms." From personal experience, the writer speaks of the similarities and differences between healthy parental affection and sexual affection. I am sure that many parents can relate with what the author says.

In one chapter, she says what needs to be said about sexual abuse hysteria in the United States. (That's one reason I'm overseas: to escape from the sexual abuse hysteria!)

However, the author also neglected a great deal of research on children's features and gestures which tend to arouse parental affection. For those interested in the subject, I recommend the work of Lorenz (0674846311),

Wonderfully beautiful prose wrapped around a thorough examination of the ways we enter into the physicality of a child's world, of parenting infants, toddlers, adolescents, and the current indictments of that physical relationship. Intellectually brilliant, linguistically rich, these essays cast the relationships between parent and child into a new and necessary light, and reaffirms the importance of touch in the growth of a child, and the emergence of a parent

5 out of 5 stars Oxenhandler Gets It "Just Right".......2001-04-17

The Eros of Parenthood is a sensitive exploration of a very hot topic: managing the intensely sensual experience of child-rearing in a culture as attuned to sexual abuse as ours is.

I have worked in the field of child sexual abuse for many years, and know very well how widespread the problem is and how serious the consequences can be. Therefore, I read Oxenhandler's book with some fear that she would "pile on" in the current attacks against people who have raised awareness about sexual abuse.

But Oxenhandler successfully balances her impassioned advocacy for the bonds of passion between parents and children and her knowledge that sexual abuse is a reality. In fact, she uses Goldilocks's quest to find the "just right" between two extremes -- in this case, the extremes of frigid lack of touch on one hand, and sexual abuse on the other -- as an organizing trope throughout her book.

Oxenhandler's book is not a quick read. It is subtle, nuanced, exploratory, beautifully written -- a perfect fit for her subject. Every parent who has been overwhelmed by love and the sheer joy of physical intimacy with a child will find relief, friendship, and intelligent, sensitive guidance in this wonderful, essential, and timely book.

5 out of 5 stars Evocative writing combined with close scrutiny.......2001-04-06

Noelle Oxenhandler's "The Eros of Parenthood" combines evocative writing with a close scrutiny of the great pleasures and considerable dangers in close bonds between children and parents. What's unique about this book is the way Ms Oxenhandler writes with the intimacy of memoir, making the reader feel very close to the experiences she describes from her own childhood and her relationship with her daughter, and at the same time gives us just the right amount of information about parent-child bonds. "Just rightness" is truly the theme of this fine book--encouragement to all of us to trust that we will get the right balance between being intimate with out children and not invading their psyches or bodies. So many books that might be called "popular psychology" are cold and distant; "The Eros of Parenthood" feels like listening to a friend, and friend of friends, describing the difficult times, the rewarding times, with their children. So much of our spontaneity has been curbed as we imagine that we might be doing something wrong, or what could be construed as wrong, when we show our love to our children in ways we know are entirely right; "The Eros of Parenthood" tells us that we are doing a good thing by loving our children, that we know in our hearts and minds when that love isn't appropriate and we won't go there. "Eros of Parenthood" is unique and beautiful in so many ways that I recommend it with great enthusiasm. B. L. Baer, Floreant Press, California.

This is a beautiful book addressing complex and dynamic elements of parenting. The writing is sweet, dramatic, sensual and educated. It dares to be politically incorrect and encourages a return to intimate mothering that has been lost via feminism and day care. As a new mom, I was overwhelmed with feelings of intimacy for my baby son...I had no idea. I read the chapters, underlined, and tearfully re-read the moving paragraphs to my husband when he got home at night. Oxenhandler succinctly captures the power of a child's love for his momma, the smiles that light up a parent's heart, as well as the darker side of sensuality between parent and child. It is a well-researched, albeit brave and scary, text.

                            Book Description

In the period 1890-1925, Russian art went through dramatic changes similar to those in Western Europe over the same period. However, in two respects Russian artists developed more spectacularly than their Western colleagues: in the spheres of intuitive symbolism and of constructivism. Pavel Kuznetsov (1878-1968), the leading figure in the development of intuitivism, made a considerable impact on the Russian art world and had a profound influence on his colleagues. Kuznetsov lived in the last years of the Russian Empire, through the revolution of 1917, the turbulent 1920s, the Stalin era, and into the Brezhnev years. Thus as a politically committed painter his story illuminates the difficulties for a lyrical intuitivist artist during the post-revolutionary period. There are few of his paintings in the West and so he is comparatively unknown. This study will make Kuznetsov's work more familiar to Western art historians and collectors, and should also engage the interest of readers more generally interested in Russia and the Soviet Union.

                              Book Description

Official histories of the First World War are accounts of strategy and tactics, political and logistical considerations. After reading them many might ask why soldiers are rarely mentioned except in terms of military units. Even regimental histories devote more space to the plans and concepts than to the men used to implement the plans. This book was the first serious attempt to illustrate the humanity of the soldier on the Western Front, reflecting the war as they saw it from first shot to last. These tales, told to fellow men in the trenches, behind the lines, at base hospitals and at the estaminets and billets during rest periods, have been recorded here.
