One cannot have a rounded view of the American revolution without seeing the extent to which it was also a civil war, and understanding the viewpoint of those in America who shared in the resentment of King George's policies, yet renounced violence as a remedy and saw no need to overthrow the existing rule of law. Susan Shenstone's thoroughly researched and detailed study of James Moody does precisely that. It is I believe at least as important for an American audience as for a Canadian one.

4 out of 5 stars A different view.......2007-01-11

This is the first book I have read which describes the American revolutionaries unsympathetically. At one point, I thought the book must have been written during the current conflict in Iraq, but the copyright is dated 2000. I guess those who fight against authority have something in common with each other.

I did not find this book exciting to read. Perhaps the author is trying to be authoritative at the price of being dull. Altogether, I suggest it's a great book to have read, not such a great book to read.

4 out of 5 stars Loyalists?Patriots? Who is what?.......2003-03-30

This is a very readable scholarly book about Captain James Moody of New Jersey. A man denounced by Washington ( he regularly swiped his mail) and all but forgotten in the parts of Nova Scotia where he was essential in civil development. Being a descendent of his compatriot, Lawrence Marr, I have an axe to grind, but if you have seen the movie "The Patriot" and find yourself distressed at the actions of the Loyalists in America, you owe it to yourself to read this. Moody, being aware of the usages of war at the time, was careful to wear his uniform and carry his commission on his adventures in the Delaware Gap area. His escapes were legendary and he became the subject of children's tales to the "patriot" third that remained behind when he and compatriots fled New York at the end of the Revolution. The first chapters reveal the situation at the beginning of the Revolution and the social web of the time. It is easy to understand his actions given the treatment of his in-laws and associates by the radicals, and one might suspect an element of class warfare motivated acts against the wealthy farmer class to which Moody, the Brittains, and the Marr families belonged. The later half of the book deals with his attempts to acquire a loyalist pension and his role in establishing a community in Nova Scotia. As such, the book is a valuable addition to the "Loyalist Studies" program of Canada's scholars. Nonetheless, it is also of great value to those of us in the States. It demonstrates the complex situation at the time of the Revolution with son against father, brother against brother. As one reads about denunciations and persecutions, one learns not only that "It could happen here" but that "It has happened here."

      Book Description

Volume 2 of 2. The facts as they have been left to us by Erasmus, and which Mr. Mangan has here gathered together in compact form, give us an Erasmus far different from this imagined one. In presenting this study of the life and activities of Erasmus to the public, the author realizes that it differs in many respects from the conventional biography of him to which we have become accustomed. This has been less a matter of intent than a direct consequence of the plan which Mangan followed throughout the work: of having him speak for himself always, rather than attempting to interpret his at times so kaleidoscopic mind.

      Book Description

You are what you eat, but why are you eating so much? Your moods! Why can't you stay with a reasonable exercise program, and why is obesity at epidemic proportions in our society today? Negative moods hold the explanations. Feeling down? Wish you had more energy and less stress? If this describes you some or most of the time, you are probably among the millions today who respond to increasing stress and low moods with food--a candy bar, or perhaps a cup of coffee and a sweet. Such "emotional eating" may temporarily boost your spirits, but this effect is a short-lived quick fix that perpetuates chronic overeating and obesity. Moreover, the same negative moods that have grown to substantial proportions in society today, sap your resolve to exercise. In this breakthrough book, an acclaimed mood researcher tackles the problem of overweight and inactivity from the perspective of mood. Thayer compellingly argues that it is our moods--beyond nutritional needs--that signal our bodies to desire food we really don't need in order to replenish our energy and to lower stress levels. Consciously or unconsciously, we constantly seek "calm energy" to face the challenges of the day. Eating is often our first response to a bad mood--as opposed to other, less-fattening forms of self-medication, like listening to music or just slowing down--but, as Thayer explains with clarity and abundant scientific research, we would do much more to raise our spirits in the long run by something as simple as a 10 minute walk. Various forms of exercise are proven mood regulators in ways this book describes in detail. Sound like common sense? Perhaps, but if the choice is exercise or a snack, the snack usually wins out unless we understand our moods. This understanding is the real key. We must see why we eat too much before we can control what and how much we eat. From this we learn the reasons for the inevitable failures at diet and exercise. This provocative new approach to understanding and fighting overeating offers practical advice and biological explanations for your cravings and moods, and it shows how both are indicators of energy and stress levels. Thayer describes how most people's daily energy cycles function, and he explains how you can apply this in scientifically proven ways to fight the urge to eat when you are down and to achieve the optimum goal of "calm energy."

Great book! It makes so much sense to consult a nutritionist for understanding weight issues! Also, love that the book is available for viewing with the online reader - great feature!

5 out of 5 stars Calm Energy Book.......2007-02-08

Excellent read, very informative. Great for people struggling with moods and their desire to eat based on those moods.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book on food and mood !.......2004-02-19

Ever dived into a chocolate cake after a stressful day at the office? Had your way with a bag of chips after fighting with the kids? Stuffed down more than your share of greasy fried food when you were feeling low?

Many of us are stress overeaters. And there are a number of books on the market that mention how we have emotional roadblocks that keep us from becoming slim. But few of these books discuss this issue in the depth that "Calm Energy" does.
      And few give helpful solutions.

The author Robert Thayer Ph.D describes in detail how when we are feeling tense, tired, or depressed we often turn to high fat sugary foods. Citing a number of studies Thayer explains why we do this.

Then Thayer explains simple solutions. According to Thayer, "exercise is the single best way of coping with the tension and fatigue that inevitably result from stress." He describes simple techniques you can do when your urge to eat, what you don't need seems to overwhelm your body. A brisk 5 minute walk is one idea.

One paragraph in the book made a huge impact. Thayer recounts how a taxicab driver was very calm despite bad traffic, radio calls etc. The driver used worrybeads to release tension. According to Thayer small systemic movements like moving beads or squeezing soft rubbery objects can help relax your body.
I quickly hijacked my 14 year olds stringed bead bracelet and by manipulating the beads slowly released some stress and managed to avoid a trip to the kitchen to gobble up some goodies I didn't need! Simple, effective technique that I will use more often.

Overall an excellent look at the mood food connection with super tips on what you can do to destress and become healthier.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-01-17

While a bit repetitive in the beginning, I loved this book! It provides a framework for thinking about your behavior based on biologically-driven moods. It makes you more aware of your own moods, what causes them, and how they, in turn, influence your behavior (and not only in terms of food and exercise).

The author addresses the perplexing question of why people who know better still eat unhealthfully and do not exercise. I have often wondered myself, if I know exercise or meditation or whatever makes me feel so much better, why don't I just do it everyday? The concept of Calm-Energy vs. Tense-Tiredness is very convincing and useful. Also, the book puts the idea of "emotional eating" in it's larger context. Compared to the treatment emotional eating gets in the popular media, this is much more interesting and makes it seem very possible to intervene and change habits.

This is not a standard self-help book and doesn't give the clearest instructions on how to apply all this information to your everyday life. Rather, it gives you knowledge, understanding, awareness and--with the extensive footnotes and references to research--confidence that this guy really knows what he's talking about. I'm planning to read his "The Origin of Everyday Moods" next.

5 out of 5 stars Making the connection with Calm.......2002-06-24

Here is a great read for folks from all walks and talks of life. I first went searching for ways to feel better--the food-sleep connection is very compelling even though everybody has that hunch. Thayer gently sells you on taking action in even small steps. Then I applied his ideas to improving my success at the weekly poker game. Bingo, or flush, it works there too. Academically sound and enjoyable, toss away your make a million books and manage your insides first. This one is a winner even if you occasionally have a bad beat along the way!

          Book Description

Would you cook great Italian food every day if it didn’t mean spending hours in the kitchen preparing it? Chef-restaurateur Silvia Bianco shows how to whip up exciting Italian meals in a single skillet in forty minutes or less using the saute method of cooking that professional chefs use to get delicious food on the table fast. With a foreword by noted New York chef Bobby Flay, and 16 pages of color photographs and drawings, Bianco walks readers through basic saute techniques and shows how to make the easy-to-prepare (and freeze) stock sauces and broths that are the key to creating saute magic. Saute appetizers, pizza, poultry, meat, seafood, and desserts are each covered in its own chapter, and Bianco offers more than fifteen low-fat saute recipes. Each of the nearly one hundred recipes reflects Bianco’s very personal cooking style, first developed as a young child in her grandmother’s kitchen in Calabria, Italy. Simply Saute will appeal to today’s busy cooks who are looking for new ways to prepare meals simply, as well as those looking to create a restaurant experience at home without a lot of fuss.

5 out of 5 stars So easy and so good!.......2006-03-10

I've made a number of recipes out of the book and they are all great! The best part is you can make a large batch of the wine sauces and freeze them ahead of time. They make a great tasting base to many of the dishes and it saves time too. I made one of the meals for some guests and the husband loved it and actually asked for the recipe! I bought him the book for Christmas. I highly recommend it!!

          1 out of 5 stars simply HORRIBLE.......2005-12-06

This book is not only horrible...

It is the most boring cooking book i've ever opened.

          Also,

I visited the authors website and she talks much about the past and how her family cooked and yet little about what traditions she is doing now (with exception to some wreaths she created each holiday season--NOT FOOD)!

          STAY AWAY!

5 out of 5 stars Simply Saute your way to a memorable meal! .......2004-10-01

Simply Sauté is full of flavorful recipes for when I'm cooking for my family or entertaining guests, which I do a lot!

Chef Silvia's tips for each recipe make preparing the meal a breeze, especially when I'm doing all the cooking in one pan! The Simply Saute recipes use very little oils or fats, an added bonus. I already have many favorites I make often from this cookbook.

My gift shopping is that much easier for friends this holiday season because everyone is getting this book! ChefSilvia has a website that's full of great information as well. Happy sautéing!

5 out of 5 stars Simply Sautee is simply the best.......2003-11-30

I love Italian food and having gone to Biscotti numerous times and experience the wonderful home cooking that Chef Silvia
prepares, is a treat in it self. This book is simple and provides some great simple dishes and tips. It's a must buy for the holidays. The book is 1st class as well Chef Silvia herself!

                              Book Description

Peter Applebome grew up obsessed by box scores, so when his son, Ben, joined Little League he happily assumed he'd be spending Ben's childhood at the ballfield. But what Ben really liked was hiking and camping-and when he joined the local Scout troop Applebome reluctantly went along for the ride.

As someone who had never made a fire except in a gas grill and tied knots only in his shoelaces, Applebome was an unlikely recruit. Taking us from the low points to the unexpected triumphs and through all the trekorees and derbies in between, Applebome hikes the trail from tenderfoot skeptic to proud Scout dad. Offering affectionate portraits of the motley group of boys in the troop, he also laces his very funny narrative with an informal but fascinating history of Scouting and grapples with the modern-day controversies that will help determine Scouting's future.

                              Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars It's still a good book--- despite the author.......2007-02-26

Applebome's a good, solid writer, and the book has plenty of fun spots. But he believes homosexuality is purely genetic, not a complex socio-behavioral phenomenon. As a result, he has a hard time appreciating the BSA's necessary (I think) exclusion rule.

But skip the author's soapbox sociology. It's a good read and makes me want to get back into scouting. I'm an adult Eagle Scout and this book reminds me why I loved scouting: the adventuring ethic, the stress on personal initiative and not competition, the new doors and new horizons that open up. I played plenty of organized sports, lettered in high school and college, and this said, scouting was still far more influential to me. When all is said and done, boys/young men are still motivated by high ideals and principles, by tall examples, and this is the stuff of scouting.

4 out of 5 stars Father & Son experience Scouting.......2005-08-13

A good narative of a family's baptism into the BSA. Peter Applebome tells a good story how he and his son experience a National youth organization and their experience from their travels. A good read for any Scouter looking for a refreshing outlook on Scouting. The book offers a refreshing look into the BSA and its impact on a typical Boy Scout Troop.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful story of a Scout and Scouters Journey Together.......2004-11-23

Outstanding Read, I caught myself reflecting on all of the experiences I valued while growing up in scouting. I'm pleased those same experiences are still around for my son and I to share and enjoy some 25 years later. What a program! For those who have a hard time digesting the political inferences and self-analysis that Mr Applebome makes in his book, I say to you; the story is only about a dad learning and growing with his son and ultimately becomes a better person for having those experiences. That is precisely what the scouting experience was designed for. I'm pretty conservative in my world view and found that if everyone thought like me, what a boring life we would live. Cheers to you Mr. Applebome, just let us know when "Ben" makes Eagle.

4 out of 5 stars Good narrative and history ruined with liberal editorials.......2004-08-31

Applebome writes a very entertaining and interesting account of his experiences as his son joins Boy Scouting. His stories of his son's and his introduction to camping trips and outdoor adventure are funny and very true-to-life for others to enjoy. Further, the history he gives of the origins of Boy Scouting, first in England and then in the United States, is a valuable lesson all Scouts and their dads should hear. However, he then ruins the book, in my opinion, by interjecting his liberal politics into the book by bashing the Boy Scouts as "intolerant" and "discriminatory" for taking a stand that the majority of its members (although certainly not his or others who agree with his liberal opinions) support, namely that homosexuality is morally wrong and therefore is not accepted in Scouting. Why is it that when liberals disagree with an opinion, those who support it are discriminatory while if there opinion is agreed with, those persons are "principled"? Would it be "discriminatory" to exclude alcoholics from leadership in Scouting?
I also feel he displays a typical liberal attitude by presuming that as a parent who admittedly never owned a uniform and only was involved with Boy Scouts for a total of three years, can offer all of the solutions to its problems. Simply put, it would have been a better book if he stuck to telling stories instead of editorializing.

                              5 out of 5 stars A Must Read!.......2004-04-08

I absolutely loved this book! I bought it for my husband's Xmas present but read it the night I bought it. My husband read it without putting it down and my Boy Scout, age 15 read it. It really presents how Scouting really is with weird and wonderful boys and adults. We were surprised at how much his experience in scouting was like ours.

To anyone familiar with Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural designs, the fact that love of Japanese art, design and print work should come as no surprise. The book 'Frank Lloyd Wright and the Art of Japan: The Artist's Other Passion' by Julia Melch gives clear details of the influence of the Japanese on his thinking and creativity, both in narrative and in glorious photography and print.

                                Frank Lloyd Wright
Wright was born in Wisconsin shortly after the American Civil War. He studied in the late nineteenth century with noted architect Louis Sullivan, with whom he had continuing and occasionally strained relationship. Wright is probably best known in America for the design of the Guggenheim Museum of Art In New York City; more generally, though, he is known for a particular style of low-built prairie-style houses and institutional buildings, that utilised open-space planning, and often had an element of interaction with elements such as water (in fact, a perennial complaint of Wright buildings is that they leak!). Wright was an innovator in incorporating engineering principles into the design of his buildings to provide sturdiness and creative forms of support and room design. In Japan, Wright was well-known for his design of the Imperial Hotel in Japan, as well as other buildings, including private residences of many prominent Japanese citizens. His work in Japan did not extend much beyond the early 1920s, however, and even the Imperial Hotel was demolished in 1968. Wright himself passed away in 1959 at the age of 91.

Wright and the Art of Japan
This book was produced for the Japan Society Gallery of New York by Julia Melch. It traces early affinities and influences of Japanese art on Wright and his work, continuing interest including Wright's almost voracious collecting habits, and the final selling and distribution of his collection late in Wright's life.

'When Wright died at the age of almost ninety-two, he owed money to several Asian art dealers in New York, and there were six thousand Japanese colour woodblock prints in his personal collection, not to mention some three hundred Chinese and Japanese ceramics, bronzes, sculptures, textiles, stencils, and carpets, and about twenty Japanese and Chinese folding screens.'

Some of this collection remains as part of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, but much had to be sold to pay debts, including tax bills.

Japanese art probably first came into Wright's sphere of creative influences with the World's Fair of 1893 in Chicago. Louis Sullivan had many books of Japanese design and art in his offices when Wright first joined the firm of Adler and Sullivan. This probably represents the earliest introduction. However, Japanese art was becoming widely available in American and Europe by this time, and Japanese principles were beginning to be introduced in novel ways to various buildings. Wright's first trip to Japan came in 1905, the first of many.

Wright became well-known in Japan, and entered a period he sometimes referred to as his 'Oriental Symphony'. During the time of his work on the Imperial Hotel, he gave an interview which showed his standing and mis-understanding in the Japanese architectural community:

Wright was not only a collector, but was himself a dealer of some standing. Particularly in Oak Park and the Chicago area, his designs for buildings would often include artistic recommendations that he would provide as dealer.

This lead to a major scandal, which Melch recounts in some (sometimes juicy) detail, including Wright's egocentric way of viewing the world and attempt to 'get away' with various controversial practices of manufacture and transfer of art work.

'Wright was an immodest foreigner operating outside the guidelines of the closed community of Tokyo print dealers. He flaunted his money and exuded the thinly veiled bravado of the ace dealer. Prices were escalating, the stakes were high, and h is jealous rivals were no doubt pleased to take him out of the game. Revamping was a new technique, totally unexpected. Greed and anticipation of huge profits had made him careless.'

Wright left Japan in 1922, before completion of the Imperial Hotel. He never returned. In fact, he had few international dealings in art or architecture after this period. He longed for greater international acclaim and exposure, but save a few unfinished projects in Hungary and Baghdad, he had few foreign assignments, and none of note.

Disposing of the collection, both before his death and by his widow after his death, is a tale in-and-of itself recounted in the book. Trading with friends and other art dealers, auctioning off pieces individually and as collections, and giving gifts away reduced the collection somewhat, but Wright continued to add pieces throughout his life.

The author, Julia Melch, has had a career devoted to Asian art. Educated at Smith College and Harvard University, she has worked at the Metropolitan Museum of Art organising exhibitions of Asian art. She is currently a senior consultant to Christie's, the famous auction house, specialising in Japanese art works.

This book is produced by Harry N. Abrams, Inc., which has a strong reputation, well deserved, for producing outstanding volumes of art. The colours are vibrant and attractive; the pages are firm and well-suited to the art represented. This is a reference volume, a great coffee-table book, and an interesting narrative read. Giving a perspective on both Frank Lloyd Wright and Japanese art of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries through the lens of each other is a unique perspective, well executed.

5 out of 5 stars The Passion of Frank Lloyd Wright.......2001-04-15

It's almost unimaginable that anyone could find something new to say about this protean figure of the 20th Century. And, in fact, another author, Kevin Nute, has also written in recent years about the architect's lifelong fascination with things Japanese. Yet where Nute concentrates on the Orientalist ideas and design concepts that Wright so readily and brilliantly adapted in his own work, Julia Meech turns her attention to a different--and darker--side of the architect's personality: his passion for Japanese prints and art collecting. As she tells it, this obsession (his print purchases often exceeded the money that he took in on architectural commissions) not only drove Wright into bankruptcy, but ensnared him in a debilitating scandal over the resale of "revamped" artworks to several of his wealthy patrons.

Wright, the driven, self-absorbed genius, is everywhere apparent in this fascinating, well-researched saga. But so is the conflicted man behind the famous persona. (This isn't to say that he emerges as a particularly sympathetic figure: Meech relates, for instance, how Wright helped organize a memorial exhibition following the untimely death of his Japanese mentor, the young and talented printmaker Hashiguchi Goyo. She adds, however, that no evidence exists to show that Wright ever owned one of Goyo's prints--a bit ironic given the high regard in which Goyo's work is held today.)

Equal to Meech's riveting account, I would have to say that this is one of the most beautifully-designed catalogs (it accompanies an exhibition of the same name at the Japan Society Gallery in New York City) that I have ever encountered. It is both lavish and tasteful, if that's possible, with gorgeous color plates and scads of rare photographs of the architect and his cronies, his places of refuge (including hotel suites and other temporary dwellings chock-a-block full of art treasures), and persons and places relevant to the story. For Frank Lloyd Wright fans already burdened by a surfeit of wonderful books, make room on your shelf for a fine new acquisition.
