Book Description
As one of the few higher-ranking officers in the Army of Tennessee to avoid controversy, General Alexander P. Stewart (1821-1908) was an outstanding but not outrageous leader. Consequently, he has garnered little attention from historians. In this masterly biography, Sam Davis Elliott traces the life of this undeservedly obscure general from his early years at West Point through his involvement in nearly all of the battles fought by the Army of Tennessee to his postwar career as an educator and Civil War park commissioner. More than the story of one man, Soldier of Tennessee poignantly conveys the triumphs and failures of the Confederate effort in the West and a divided nation's efforts at reconciliation.

A Sad End.........................2007-06-10
Lieutenant General Alexander P. Stewart may well be the least known high ranking officer of the Civil War. {? Sam Cooper ?} A native of Tennessee who graduated from West Point, he left the Army to become a college professor in order to provide more income , and stability, for his family. When war came, there was no hesitation; Stewart followed the South, soon earned General's stars, and served with distinction from the early days to Joe Johnston's final surrender in North Carolina.
Sam Elliott has given us a wonderful account of the campaigns of the Army of Tennessee, and General Stewart's part in them. Stewart remains unknown because he was a quiet man who did his job, and left the political infighting to others. During the Bragg debacle, he got along with both sides. Today, the E-Ring at the Pentagon is populated with men like Stewart, equally unknown, but indispensable. The Tennessee Campaign of fall, 1864, gets good coverage, including Stewart's participation at Spring Hill and Franklin.
When the war ended, General Stewart rejoined the Union, and encouraged his men to do the same. Returning to Education, he had a distinguished tenure as Chancellor at Ole Miss. Many today are unaware of the debt we owe to Stewart, and some other leaders from both sides [prominantly General Rosecrans].....the wonderful system of National Battlefield Parks was the result of their hard work. Begining with Chickmauga, the system has spread and become a priceless treasure.
This fine book closes with what is, for me, the most disturbing fate to befall any of the Confederacy's officers. I can not explain how a committed Christian, and a well grounded Calvinist, could do what he did. I have discussed this with the author, and he has no explanation, either. My own theory is that Stewart [a] wasn't really well grounded-I dismiss that, or, [b] became unhinged from his wife's death and/or the effects of old age. In any event, the close marrs an otherwise great book. That, however, is General Stewart's fault, not Sam Elliott's. Great book about a subject who, despite his tragic late life decision, deserves to be much better known.
FROM CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE GENERAL TO A JEHOVAH'S WITNESS.......2005-04-02
Confederate General Alexander P. Stewart is revered by today's WATCHTOWER SOCIETY and its JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES members as the only U.S. Civil War General to convert to their belief system. Stewart joins President Dwight Eisenhower and U.S. Army General William P. Hall as the only three West Point educated American Generals who were either reared (Eisenhower) as JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES or converted later in life (Stewart and Hall). As documented in pages 297-9 of this book, the JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES Founder Charles Taze Russell absented himself for two days from the middle of the annual WatchTower Convention in 1908 so he could travel to St. Louis and preside over Stewart's Funeral, which was conducted with full Confederate honors and regalia by the Confederate Veterans. General Alexander P. Stewart's baptism into the JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES religion was reported in the October 1, 1905 issue of the WATCHTOWER magazine: "We had a warm welcome at St. Louis, too, and the attendance was excellent, notwithstanding the fact that we did not get the announcement into the WATCH TOWER, and hence but few came from nearby towns. The morning session was in the "Christian Church" edifice. The topic was "Consecration," and following it nine symbolized full consecration by water baptism. Among the number was Brother Alexander Stewart, well known throughout the South for the active and prominent part he took in the war of the Rebellion, as the leader of "Stewart's Cavalry." General Stewart is of advanced years, but clear of intellect. He has been a "soldier of the Cross" for some time, and deeply interested in "Present Truth" for several years. He expected to be symbolically baptized at the time of the Chattanooga Convention, but was prevented by ill health. After leaving the water Brother Stewart was heard to express great satisfaction at having thus outwardly confessed his blessed Lord and his full devotion to Him and His cause. Brother Stewart already had joined the army of the Lord, but by this act of public confession he, so to speak, donned his regimentals and joined the forces "on the firing line." May he loyal prove and true to the end of the way, and with all the faithful receive the crown of life which fadeth not away. How sectional lines, race and party prejudices and all the distinctions of wealth and fame gradually fade from the minds of those who become by God's grace and truth members prospective of the royal priesthood, the holy nation, the peculiar people, called for a purpose, even to show forth the praises of him who called us out of darkness into his marvellous light! With this erstwhile warrior, but more recently college president and later U.S. Commissioner, none others of the nine were of the same rank or education, yet they all were on the same level of divine mercy through Christ -- justified and sanctified through the grace of our Lord. The assorted company well illustrated the Apostle's words, "Not many great, not many wise, not many learned, hath God chosen." One of these nine was a child of twelve years, a very unusual sight with us. Child though she was she gave good evidence of a clear appreciation of what she did, so that we could not question her acceptability with the Lord. We could not help a mental reflection on how extremes meet in the family of God -- in the body of Christ. The tall man, full of years and ripe in the learning of this world, and the little girl, on the threshold of life every way, had both heard the voice of Jesus say, Come unto me and have your sins forgiven, and find rest for your souls and find eternal life. "All of the Lord's followers meet on this common level. "All ye are brethren," "One is your Master, even Christ." Some may have almost envied the great man, but we doubt not he almost envied the little child, who, starting thus early to follow the footsteps of Jesus, had apparently reached nearly the same point at the same time by the shorter journey. "They that seek me early shall find me" -- the more easily. Nevertheless, the General's learning and influence may be turned to the greater advantage if wisely used in the service of our King. May he, may we all, prove faithful to the cause of him who loved us and bought us with his precious blood."
Its about time!.......2002-01-24
It IS about time General Stewart gets some press. As stated in this wonderful book there are Colonels in Lee's army that are better known than this man who was one of the ranking generals in the Confederate army. At Franklin Stewart helped lead a far larger and more deadly charge than the famous July 4th, 1863 charge at Gettysburg, yet very few people know of him. As the campaigns of the Army of Tennessee begin to gain further study maybe this will change. This book should help a great deal.
From his birth in Rogersville, Tennessee until his death in St. Louis Stewart always remained at heart a Tennessean and his dedication to his state led him into all of the major battles of the Army of Tennessee. Nobody who studies that army can do so without a study of "Old Straight". This book does a wonderful job of exploring the life, war experences, and post-war work of this deeply religious man.
There are only two small problems with this work. First, Mr. Elliott sometimes goes a little far in defending Stewart. The picture he paints of the political strife in the Army of Tennessee is very clear but on occasion he goes a little out of his way to point out how little Stewart was involved in these political battles. It might be more to Stewart's credit if he had been a little more involved in trying to remove General Bragg before more damage could be done. The other problem is one faced by many writers dealing with war. Most readers get quickly lost as a writer begins to relate how this regiment was placed here and that regiment was placed there. Worse yet is the practice of describing an action in detail with terms like "Jones attacked on Smith's left which was countered by moving Brown......". Soon the reader who often has never heard of these regimental or division commanders becomes confused and is not sure who is fighting who or which side anybody is on. Can it be avoided? I don't know but it does weaken this fine work somewhat.
Still, anyone who hopes to understand the "other" major Confederate army must read this book. Mr. Elliott has made a major contribution to the study of the Army of Tennessee and I thank him.
A well researched look at the Civil War in the west........1999-06-13
Sam Elliott has brought to life an overlooked general from the Confederacy. As the highest ranking officer to serve the South from Tennessee, General Alexander P. Stewart was one of the few and lucky individuals to survive the entire western campaign. Soldier of Tennessee gives the reader a wonderful cronological look at the war in Tennessee and intoduces us to one of the most respected men in the Southern army. Not only does Elliott present a thorough description of most of the western campaigns, but he is also able to capture the human struggle of a battered Confederate army. This is a must for any Civil War enthusiast.

Book Description
Fifty years after his death, Walter Benjamin remains one of the great cultural critics of this century. Despite his renown, however, Benjamin's philosophical ideas remain elusive--often considered a disaggregated set of thoughts not meant to cohere. This book provides a more systematic perspective on Benjamin, laying claim to his status as a philosopher and situating his work in the context of its time. Exploring Benjamin's theory of language, spoken and nonspoken, Rainer Rochlitz shows how Benjamin reconceptualized traditional ideas of language, art, and history. Offering an expansive assessment of a unique twentieth-century thinker, this volume provides an indispensable guide for readers of Benjamin's recently released collected works.

Book Description
Testosterone is as natural to women as estrogen. It is not just a man's hormone. From a woman's teens until menopause, her body makes more testosterone than estrogen! Testosterone is crucial to a woman's health and well-being. Loss of testosterone can cause loss of sex drive and sexual sensation, marked fatigue, low energy, hair loss, decreased stamina, loss of height, and other symptoms. New testosterone therapy options for women are poised to hit the consumer market in 2005 and will revolutionize approaches to help women's sexual response, much as Viagra revolutionized the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men. Now it's women's turn. This book is written by a nationally known women's health physician and hormone specialist to provide reliable, cutting-edge medical information, important now to overcome stigma and negative myths about testosterone. Dr. Vliet teaches women to avoid risks of improper dosing using new treatment options with bioidentical testosterone. This book will help women learn ways to restore libido, improve muscle strength, build healthy bone, and maintain normal energy levels.

It's about time...........2007-05-08
Thanks to the author, the word MAY get out. I only found out about Testosterone when I got "pre-cancerous lesions". This was about 8 years after I had total hysterectomy.(Removal of ovaries, cervix and uterus)at age 32. During that time, I lost pubic hair (and even head hair), my vagina shrunk so bad I looked like a Barbie Doll and sex/libido was GONE. Then when I got these lesions, GYN prescribed Testosterone as "useful" but controversial. Within days, the lesions diappeared, hair began to grow back, vagina softened and swelled to normal and then I got HORNY! I've used it for over 10 years now and I look younger than my friends, I have a very happy hubby, my body looks ten years younger and I am in my sixties. I moved to a new state and the new Doctor is not wild over my insistence of Testosterone cream. He says it's controversial. I want to say, "Get over it - just look at your patient, don't you see the health difference?" So don't expect your MD to clamor for the information this good Dr. Vliet is imparting. After all, she is a female. I say, just listen to her!
Dr. Vliet.......2007-04-10
Anything that Dr. Vliet writes is always informative. It's information that even your own personal physician may not know.
Very enlighteneing.......2007-01-10
I read this book in one night and determined that my lack of test. was the problem and immediately contacted my gyn and got a prescription. She had already told me that I was low and I was prescribed another prescription before but it made me angry and unhappy. This compounded prescription is just right and I feel like my old self again.
Thank you.
The Savvy Woman's Guide to Testosterone:How to Revistalize your Sexuality, Strength and Stamina.......2006-03-13
As a postmenopausal woman, who likes to know what is going on with her body, I found this book very helpful and informative.
It provided me with enough information to ask additional questions. I think that would be my general recommendation, get additional information to ask the right questions. We too often do not take responsibility for our own health and well-being and rely on doctors and others, who may or may not have the correct information, to tell us what to do. While everyone may not agree with Ms. Vliet's book, it is a resource.

Ray's Boathouse.......2007-02-21
Not only is this a beautiful book but very informative about the Pacific Northwest's bounty of seafood. I work at an exclusive Country Club and took this book to our Chef; that week end he served a couple of recipes from it. Also I enjoyed reading the history of Ray's Boathouse.
Recipe Secrets from Ray's Boathouse.......2005-02-19
Ray's Boathouse is a legendary restaurant at Seattle's Shilshole Bay. With an enviable panoramic view of the Olympic Mountains and Puget Sound, this has become a comforting location to enjoy a meal, watch boats sail by and enjoy entertaining conversations with friends and family.
My mother loves Coconut Prawns and I think that is why she purchased this cookbook. She has been so kind as to lend it to me for a few weeks. If you love seafood you will find recipes for everything from Black Pepper Dungeness Crab to Ray's Crab and Corn Chowder. You may enjoy trying recipes for the Parmesan-Crusted Halibut or the Pan Roasted Copper River Sockeye Salmon on a bed of sweet corn and fiddlehead ferns.
Tempting Recipes:
Spiced Peach-Currant Chutney
Shrimp Spring Rolls
Roasted Garlic Cheesecake
Boathouse Salad with Raspberry Vinaigrette
Dungeness Crab Cakes with Orange Tarragon Butter Sauce
Chardonnay Prawn Butter
Scharffen Berger Chocolate Indulgence - Chocolate Ganache with Chambord Sabayon
Deep-Dish Apple Pie
Lemon Mousse
Double Chocolate Walnut Brownies
The pictures in this cookbook make you want to run down to Pike Place Market to pick up fresh fish and other supplies. You might also want to visit Larry's Market to find a few of the produce items. Well, actually, if you are in Seattle, why not just visit this restaurant. We love Rays and I'm happy my mother bought this cookbook. She might not be seeing it for a few more months although she might be seeing me because I found a $10 off coupon for a lunch or dinner at Ray's Boathouse.
While many of the recipes look very gourmet in the pictures, they are not difficult to make and your only real concern will be where to find the freshest seafood possible in your local area. Amazon also has a gourmet food section so you can look for Scharffen Berger bittersweet chocolate for the chocolate indulgence recipe. You need at least three 9.7-ounce bars and the recipe serves 12.

Simply A Beautiful Seafood Cookbook.......2004-03-05
This is a rare find---a local cookbook which is first class, in both its layout and recipe accumen.
The photography here is breathtaking, as it would appear the views are from this Puget Sound restraurant. Their is early into this book a two-page sunset which is simply breathtaking. This is followed by nice history of the restaurant, which now includes as one of the owners Jack Sikma of Sonics fame.
Trying to find good Pacific Northwest recipes, this one certainly provides that in abundance. Especially seafood with its Ray's Cafe Seafood Margarita; Shrimp-Stuffed Artichokes with Herbed Cream Cheese; Dungeness Crab & Rock Shrimp Cakes with Ancho Chile Mayo; Grilled Copper River King Salmon with Pinot Noir Sauce; Ray's Cafe Salmon Burger with Basil Mayo and Wasabi Slaw; Parmesan Crusted Halibut with Roasted Tomato and Artichoke Ragout; Yakima Peach & Blackberry Crisp with Caramel Sauce;
Well thoughtout and balanced work with striking photos and accompanying prose to excite one to try these Seattle favorites. Meant to please and it delivers.

Love this book. Patterns are beautiful, clear and easy to read. This is a book that any devout lover of crochet should have in their collection.
Reproduction worth having.......2005-12-06
A lovely way to decorate your home or you can just add one or two to any room in your house. This can also be used to make gifts and I can tell you from experience, everyone appreciates a gift made from an antique pattern.
A beautiful book.......2005-08-20
This is a wonderful boook, full or charming and beautiful patterns. The designs are all fine thread crochet. Around 35-40 of them are filet, and these are the nicest filet I've ever seen. The most beautiful are the edgings and the floral designs. Many of the patterns are for larger items, such as table cloths or bedspreads, but all of these (excepting the filet)are made up of a smaller motif repeated many times. This enables the crocheter to choose a design and make whatever they want from it; one could use a tablecloth design for a bedspread, or a bedspread for a runner. The directions are as clear as any I have found, and the results are just spectacular. Yes, the pictures are in black and white, but as it is all white crochet on a dark backround, it is not very important. A wonderful book, certainly well worth the price.
When Crocheting was an art.......2005-01-16
I learned to crochet about 30 years ago, but when I started again about 10 years ago it was hard to find the old patterns. I was happy when I found this book in 1997. The patterns in this book use threads in 30, 40 and sometimes 60 and 80. It's a fantastic resource for delicate and drop-dead gorgeous crochet projects like vanity sets, bedspreads, dinner sets, edging and insets. I prefer these older patterns because they really take the skill of crocheting to it's highest and most artistic level.
However, if you are used to following "symbols" instead of written instructions, this might be difficult for you. But what is art without a challenge? I highly recommend this book.
Beautiful.......2004-10-31
I picked up a copy at the library, but now I know I'm going to have to buy it. I started dog earring pages to Xerox, and found that I had dog earred all but three pages. I have been looking for books that would tell me how to make lace, real lace, beautiful and detailed lace. I am bored by most modern patterns that claim to be lacy. These are true lace patterns for edgings, runners, tablecloths, bedspreads. The motifs and squares look amazing, even in fuzzy black and white pictures. I can hardly wait to see what they will look like when I'm holding them in my hands.

Behind the veil of garden design.......2007-01-13
James C. Rose is one of those rare garden designers who knew how much cultural baggage is contained in gardens, and this book really reveals the foibles of the American garden in the 60's . It should be a must read for all designers and landscape architects. That said , be prepared to be provoked by it in a similar fashion to say Beyond Good and Evil. It also has a hideous coverslip . I think Rose must have intentionally made it ugly . If you are a garden designer (as I am) be prepared to never see your clients or your relationship to them in the same light again .
The Petri Dish of Gardens.......2006-09-25
I found this gem of garden philosophy after sorting through mundane instructional garden books in my college library (think "what would Plato have said if he were a garderner?"). I loved it so much I bought a copy for myself. Rose presents a dry and cynical humororous view on gardeners, their gardens, and the petri dish (culture) of Americans that is lacking in most garden literature (opposite of "the Man Who Planted Trees"). He has a particulary funny view on American attempts of creating a Japanese garden, when the only ones who can make a real Japanese garden are the Japanese themselves. Tree hugger types, garden hobbyists, LA's, and persons who may be feeling a distaste with some aspect of the "green industry" or a distaste for cheesey flower loving types will all find something in Rose's book to love (and hate).

Hooray to June Cotner!.......2000-01-19
When I was a little girl, my parents made almost every family activity significant in one way or another. We often had toasts and special prayers to go with many happy and sometimes sad events. We would have loved a book such as Family Celebrations. Hooray to June Cotner for being clever and thoughtful enough to understand the importance of family gatherings, and for putting her enthusiasm into print for all to use and enjoy!
Family Celebrations.......2000-01-02
This book can transform you into one of those folks who can provide a toast, prayer or poem for any family celebration whether it be a tooth fairy visit, a memorial service, a fortieth birthday, a housewarming, a baby's birth or even a second marriage. Or, use its quotable words (with attribution, of course) for a greeting in one of those handsome blank greeting cards that fill today's card stands. And may you have "a thousand days like today!"
