As the son of Ralph Magee, the pilot for the mission I am grateful for the insights as to what happened to my father. Finding useful information on that incident and the politics surrounding that time is extremely difficult to do.

Lastly, I hope that Mr. Bailey realizes that he is a hero, and he can find peace knowing that my father (and his family) would have wanted him to be happy.

Tough and simple........2001-05-13

True story told truly. It might sound grand, but this is indeed a lesson on life and attracts respect, for the courage then and now to tell the story so humbly.

Historically it is not insignificant at all either, as so little has been written on that period and that aspect of the conflict, and even less with seriousness.

Boompaws overseas adventures!.......2001-04-11

First off, I'm biased. Col. Bailey is my grandfather. Secondly, I never asked why we call him Boompaw. I suppose it may be the last thing he heard standing in the doorway of Rose Bowl, ready to bail...Boom. Grandpaw went BOOM.

Thirdly, this is a fantastic account of another time, another place and another generation. If you feel you know all about Southeast Asia and that painful time in world history, you will find an entirely different perspective in Solitary Survivor.

I often wonder when reading autobiographies, especially assisted ones, if I am hearing the author or flowered up prose from his professional co-author. When you read this, know that you are hearing the author's words, in his words. The first time I read it I don't know if I cried more because of what the author went through or because I was hearing my grandfathers voice telling the story. His story.

The honest reason it gets five stars? They don't offer six.

Good personal account of 18 months of captivity in Laos........1998-04-09

Solitary Survivor is a fascinating book detailing one of the first American soldiers taken captive during the initial stages of the Vietnam war. Colonel Bailey's story is revealing in many ways as he is the only survivor of a C-47 code named Rose Bowl that crashed in Laos with seven others on board in 1961. There is some speculation that one other on board survived but Bailey explains what he knows concerning Edgar Weitkamp and gives the reader the information and allows us to form our own opinions. He is unique in that he is only one of several men to return from captivity in Laos and details the dehumanizing treatment he received at the hands of his captors. In spite of or more because of his confinement and the total darkness he was kept in for most of the 18 months he was held in captivity, Colonel Bailey made a trek back to Sam Neua, Laos, to revisit, after 30 years the place that started the nightmares that are with him today. His return visit is very unique as Sam Neua is still considered Indian country and it has also been the focal point of many POW sightings over the years. Sam Neua is considered to be the place where many American POWs where held captive but were never returned at the conclusion of the Vietnam war. As a former 1st Cavalry soldier, I salute you Colonel Bailey and thank you for writing such an informitive book. Finally, I want to thank you for answering our country's call in three wars!

Great historical content about America's role in SE Asia.......1997-10-14

This book was written by my Dad. It accurately describes how I believe Dad would react to the circumstances in which he found himself. He spends a good amount of time on the historical aspects of America's early involvement in Southeast Asia, specifically Laos. I believe the warning signs of "things to come" were readily apparent to anyone not embroiled in politics. My Dad's selfless commitment to his country and his courage under harsh conditions continue to raise the question in my mind, "Where will we find men like this should our country need them again?"

Sometimes the illustrations in this book are a little silly, but it presents information in a way that is easy for everyone to understand. It gives a good overview of many different kinds of treatment and how they can help the different causes of sciatica. The exercises depicted in the book and excellent.

Let me start off by saying thanks to DLEAKELLER who wrote the review that says - try Dr. Sarno's book on healing back pain. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! If it wasn't for your review I would never have looked at the book seriously.
I had sciatica pretty bad for 1 and 1/2 years. I found some relief from taking 4 ibuprofens once or twice a day (for months), but didn't want to live that way. My local MD quickly diagnosed sciatica with the straight leg lift test - steroids and PT didn't help. The chiropractor managed to move the pain after my first visit (Sarno's book talks about this) - it turned into what felt like electric shocks running down my leg while laying on a bench for some weight lifting and I thought that was a big improvement! He disagreed. Finally I got so desperate I did some online research and ended up here in Amazon. Searched for sciatica, and bought 3 books. Fishman's book and Cunningham's book were pretty standard fare. You know, strengthen your back, do these exercises, don't bend your back while lifting, blah, blah, blah.
Luckily for me, someone else was kind enough to share their knowledge by mentioning Sarno's book in their review of the Cunningham book. I had noticed Sarno's book in the ads off to the side and immediately ignored it. Come on, how can your mind heal your back! Despite the hokey, holistic sounding description, this BOOK CURED ME!! I know, it sounds crazy. Read some of the 213 REVIEWS on the book. I'll just be repeating what most of them have to say. I read the book and I was a classic example (as are probably the vast majority of middle aged, pretty normal/responsible folks with kids, jobs, etc who also have a bit too much emotional stress which can manifest itself as sciatica).
My improvements were dramatic and fast! Within a few days my pain was greatly diminished. Within 4-6 weeks it was 100% gone and I am back doing the rigorous sports I love - weightlifting, handball, tennis, raquetball, snowboarding, windsurfing, skimboarding, catamaran sailing, etc. Hey, I'm not 20 years old either - 50 is pretty close now.
If you have sciatica you owe yourself the risk of spending a few bucks on Sarno's book on healing back pain. Unfortunately, you won't find the technique in this book.
You won't be disappointed.

Not Very Useful.......2003-06-27

The author has good intentions here and points out that there are very few, if any, books about sciatica available. And he's right. Including this one, I could only find two. His intention is to provide a vast amount of information regarding treatments along with a useful Q & A section about sciatica. But this book lacks specific medical information, and the author doesn't provide a clear path to resolving this pain. It's filled with information about alternative treatments, but the author doesn't offer any definite opionions - only that 'it couldn't hurt to try'. In addition, he does have some recommended exercises for sciatica patients. I tried these exercises and my sciatica flared up even worse. This book may be useful for some people suffering from sciatica, but did not provide the information or solution that I was hoping to find.

When I was in culinary school, this book was a true inspiration. This is not just a cookbook. There is much more to the text than recipes and ingredients. What these two men have created is a book that represents a philosophy of food and life. I have used the ideas and techniques in my professional life, but have also embraced the soul of this masterwork and have shared it with family and friends alike. Buy this book if you love food, life and good friends. Also, buy The Thrill of the Grill, simply the best grilling book ever.

This is easily the best cookbook I've ever seen. Bold, assertive flavors without the trendy nonsense. I was going to puchase books on foods of India, Asia, and other torrid zones, but this one fills all my needs and is moron easy to boot? How's that for self-deprecating?

This book was the first cookbook I bought after the predictable Joy of Cooking. I bought it at Chris's Cambridge retaurant, The East Coast Grill- which is perhaps my favorite Boston eatery (and I've been to all the best in the area). I've gone on to buy several books concerned with Fusion Cooking, many of which just collect dust these days. I keep returning to this book. Of all my books (the collection has grown immensely since then) this has become one of the stained and ragged standards in the repertoire. The section on spice rubs is fantastic. The overall layout is simple and user friendly. The history and description is interesting while being concise. Anyone who spends a little time with this book will undoubtedly walk away with a broader appreciation of cuisine.

This is a must-have cookbook.......2001-05-22

I have a collection of over 300 cookbooks and funny enough, end up using about 1/2 dozen on a regular basis. This is one of those must-have cookbooks. How it ever went out of print I don't know. The recipes are unique, interesting, use ingredients in unusual combinations, to great effect. Superb barbecue recipes and wonderful meat rubs. Can transform a Sunday roast into something very special, without a lot of work. Many of the recipes are quite easy to prepare and look elegant. I always get great compliments when I cook from this book.

I won my husband's heart with indian chicken stew. I agree with the other review: Why oh why is this book out of print!? Makes me value my copy more. Exlporing this book makes one a more adventurous cook.

I am a creative knitter, I love these patterns. I don't worry about using the yarn the author used, I pick a yarn of the same gauge that I like and go for it. My oopsy daisy dolls are turning out wonderful (one pink and one blue) and the yarn I purchased for the little pig is going to be adorable. When you knit you should put yourself into the design not just copy the author. Go for it and have fun, with these little animals you can.

New book, old yarn.......2005-08-03

I am an experienced knitter, and am not pleased with the book. There are two items I was interested in making, the pig and the large teddy bear. The yarn requirement for the pig was off -- it called for one skein of the main color, but really needed 1 skein plus a couple yards. The yarn recommended for the large bear is a discontinued color. While it is possible to use a different yarn with the same gauge, it will not be the bear in the photo. I am very hesitant to try any other patterns in the book.

Not much crochet and not so easy.......2005-05-26

I bought this book because I am a new knitter and an experienced crocheter. I was looking for some patterns for crochet toys or easy knits. This has neither.

That said, there are some very cute and fun patterns. While the fair isle for the ears is a bit complicated (and not at all easy) for the newish knitter, the pig on the cover of the book is a fast project and worth the effort! I am in the middle of the dinosaur for my daughter and am looking forward to making the adorable penguins and polar bear.

If you are an experienced knitter, this is a nice book for making special and unique gifts. If you are looking for crochet patterns, keep looking.

Sunday in the Park....with Maurice.......2000-10-17

Everyone is familiar with the French Impressionists, but the American Impressionists added formidable contributions to this genre. Inspired by French Impressionism, yet unmistakably American and bold, Maurice Prendergast's park scenes are lively and idiosyncratic, yet evoke the times and flavors of 19th Century Boston and New York.

The Public Garden watercolors in particular are worth study. Watercolors are exhibited on tour only infrequently, as the paper and pigments are so sensitive to light. So enjoy seeing an retrospective at home with this book. A worthwhile reference if you love watercolor and Impressionism.

The title is misleading.......2002-08-07

The title of the book and its description here made me think the book would be relevant to all cognitive disabilities. However, the bulk of the book is about Down syndrome. The anecdotes are about people with Down syndrome and information about reproduction, etc. is specific to Down syndrome. Also, although the anecdotes kind of give you a warm fuzzy feeling, there is not a whole lot of practical information about teaching your child anything related to sexuality, dating, the birds and the bees, etc.

This book is a gem. The combined efforts of Melberg Schwier and Hingsburger have produced a lively resource that parents of a son or daughter at any age or with any kind of disability will treasure. It contains not only practical information about sexuality and sexual development, but is humourous and moving. The first-person accounts by parents and by people with disabilities sprinkled throughout the book are a creative way for parents to share ideas, strategies, worries with one another. The stories of people with disabilities give us all some hope for humanity. An excellent effort and a treasure to have.

This is the first Suniti Namjoshi work I have read and I was not disappointed.

"This account is autobiographical in that my experience is all I have. It's fictional since any version manipulates facts. And it's mythical, because it's by making patterns that I make sense of all I have."

Suniti is truly a clever woman who writes with great insight about issues of class. I especially loved the conversations with Goja and Goldie. I didn't want the book to end... Once i read the last page I was left thinking: Where can I get the rest of Suniti's books?
