5 out of 5 stars A first-rate resource for Stonewall.......1999-11-05

One of the Civil War's most recognized and majestic figures, Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, is portrayed in this illustrated biography, Stonewall Jackson: A Life Portrait. The author describes how a "backwoods boy" of Virginia finds his way to West Point, struggles as a student but discovers an important part of him in the War with Mexico. And later as a teacher at Virginia Military Institute, he again struggles to find personal peace, and would only do so when war is declared between the states, and the destined "Stonewall" discovers his mark in this world. A fascinating read and wonderfully illustrated, Stonewall Jackson: A Life Portrait belongs in every library, and on the bookshelf of every historian or fan of American history.

Book Description

This eighth volume of a projected twelve continues the series of William James's correspondence with family, friends, and colleagues, which was begun in volume 4 of the Correspondence. The eight volume contains some 530 letters, with an additional 620 letters calendared, thus giving a complete accounting of James's known correspondence from 1895 to June 1899 inclusive. During this period, James struggles against various temptations, never completely successfully, to devote all of his attention to philosophy, the first and great love of his life. To this end, he published The Will to Believe with a promise to set out more formally his system of radical empiricism. The volume helps document the reception of the book and the controversy to which the title essay gave rise, a controversy the main issues of which have once again returned to the forefront of philosophical discussion and places James in the middle of postmodernist discussion. His 1898 tour of California where he delivered his lecture on "Philosophical Conceptions and Practical Results," the start of the pragmatism controversy, also belongs to the period of the present volume. Among the distractions from philosophy are his 1896 Lowell Institute lectures on exceptional mental states and the Gifford lectures on varieties of religious experience, on which he began work in the late 1890s. His new philosophical correspondents are the Polish nationalist and messianist Wincenty Lutoslawski and Ferdinand Canning Scott Schiller, the future strategist of the pragmatism controversy.

James becomes a public philosopher, whose views were sought on the problems of the day. To James's great dismay, the United States was becoming an imperial power: the Venezuela crisis and the Spanish-American War sometimes rousing James into outrage. France was being torn apart by the Dreyfus affair with James expressing strong sympathies for Dreyfus and the intellectuals. The race question was coming to the forefront, with Booker T. Washington entering the list of correspondents. His family continued to take up much of his attention. As his children grew older, they became the recipients of numerous didactic, affectionate, and playful letters from a father often at a distance.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Most Lovable Letter Writers Ever to Take Up a Pen.......2000-07-29

Although this is the fourth volume of the new edition of WJ's correspondence, in a way it is really the first, and would be a good place for a reader desiring a more intimate acquaintance with William James and his world to start. Volumes 1-3 were devoted to the letters to and from his equally famous novelist brother -- an appealing idea and one probably calculated to increase interest and sales, but perhaps questionable on more fundamental grounds. Be that as it may, as a reading experience Volume 4 can scarcely be recommended too highly. William James is probably one of the most lovable letter writers ever to set pen to paper. In these letters every sentence comes alive and breathes.

James possessed to a high degree qualities of attention, powers of observation, and an adorable desire to render experience vividly. It is a cliche to say that "a world comes alive" in pages like these, but that is the feeling I have when, for example, I read a letter written from Dresden to Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. on May 15, 1868: "Wendell of my entrails! At the momentous point where the last sheet ends I was interrupted by the buxom maid calling me to tea and through various causes have not got back till now. As I sit by the open window waiting for my bkfst. and look out on the line of Droschkies drawn up on the side of the dohna Platz, and see the coachmen, red faced, red collared, & blue coated with varnished hats, sitting in a variety of indolent attitudes upon their boxes, one of them looking in upon me and probably wondering what the devil I am, When I see the big sky with a monstrous white cloud battening and bulging up from behind the houses into the blue, with a uniform coppery film drawn over cloud & blue which makes one anticipate a soaking day, when I see the houses opposite with their balconies & windows filled with flowers & greenery -- ha! on the topmost balcony of one stands a maiden, black jaketted, red petticoated, fair and slim under the striped awning leaning her elbow on the rail and her peach like chin upon her rosy finger tips -- Of whom thinkest thou, maiden, up there aloft? here, *here!* beats that human heart for wh. in the drunkenness of the morning hour thy being vaguely longs, & tremulously, but recklessly and wickedly posits elsewhere, over those distant housetops which thou regardest..."

This jocular yet earnest mood is perhaps the most pervasive one in these letters. Yet we also get glimpses into the deep and suicidal depressions he fought during his early years. Several of the letters in this volume blossom into fascinating six- or seven-page ruminations on some of the deepest questions of philosophy and religion, for these are the years in which James, "swamped in an empirical philosophy," won through to a view of the world that found room for consciousness, will, and spirit. It is in his letters to (and from) Holmes, the physician Henry Bowditch, and his bosom friend Tom Ward that we feel most intensely James's mind and heart grappling with the ideas he cares most deeply about.

But James is not always mulling over deep principles. At eighteen years of age he briefly considered becoming a painter, and began studies to that end, so it is in his character to be fully alive to surface details of the scene about him. A commentary on cultural and political matters full of interesting judgments runs though these letters. Readers will also come to feel they know well every member of the James family. WJ's letters to his sister Alice are especially remarkable.

Though my initial reaction to the policy of extremely restrained annotation practiced by the editorial team was one of frustration, in the end I came to appreciate the free hand it gives us to reread letters more carefully and to feel ourselves into the wonderful and mysterious crannies of the inner life of a great human being. To this end, I recommend deferring the introduction by Giles Gunn until after they have concluded the letters. Professor Gunn (of UC Santa Barbara) has interesting and pertinent things to say -- especially about James's relation to his father, the Swedenborgian theologian Henry James, Sr., on whose work Gunn has written -- but there is nothing there that cannot wait until readers have first immersed themselves in the primary texts.

The volumes of this series are beautiful in their craftsmanship, and it is an aesthetic as well as intellectual delight to manipulate and peruse them. This volume would make an excellent gift for a bright high school senior or college freshman, since the problems of youth and of finding a vocation hold a special place here -- for anyone struggling with a chronic or debilitating illness (James is plagued with back and eye problems through most of these years) -- or indeed, for anyone who reads!

5 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone interested in shamanic traditions.......2005-01-02

Ken Cohen brings us an outstanding overview of Native American healing. Cohen, also known as "Bear Hawk," is an adopted member of the Cree Nation, and has studied with many medicine persons over four decades. This clear and lucid summary explains the medicine traditions and approaches of many of the Native American nations.

As Cohen explains, this book will not teach you to be a healer in this tradition because Native American healing is not learned from books. What it will do is to give you a breadth and depth of appreciation of the rich folklore that has much to offer those of us who are raised in the (relatively) sterile tradition of Western medicine which addresses the disease the person has, often ignoring the person who has the disease. The point is well made by Cohen that the person who is the healer, together with the person seeking the healing, shape and individualize the medicine that is needed for that specific healing.

Cohen writes with great wisdom and sensitivity, sharing his voluminous knowledge and many years of experience in studying and practicing Native American healing. He brings a lightness to this monumental work by sharing many personal stories of his encounters with the wise elders and healers of many Nations.

This is a must read for anyone interested in shamanic traditions.

Book Description

Food contains the history of the world. Without words, it tells a thousand stories of political struggle, of ethnology, religion, geography and migration. Tastes, flavors and textures uncover centuries-old events; local specialties unlock the mysteries of agriculture and climate; foods foreign to a region reveal the effect of expansion and commerce. The Foodlover's Atlas of the World weaves an intricate portrait of the food regions of the world today and how they came to be. Renowned cookbook author Martha Rose Schulman lends her expertise to an intimate look at what makes each cuisine unique, engaging the mind as much as the taste buds.

A journey across many lands, The Foodlover's Atlas of the World gives in-depth details on local customs and lore, typical menus and traditional ingredients for each region. For the cook, the casual food reader, the gastronomic fanatic and the cultural historian, there is no other book on the food of the world that packs such a visual, cultural and culinary punch.

The Foodlover's Atlas of the World features forty-three distinctive regions and subregions that go beyond political boundaries to gastronomic borders; and close to 300 evocative photographs, 90 special recipes, plus sample menus, dish definitions, local food lore and historical detail.

5 out of 5 stars The Bible of International Cuisine.......2007-02-27

The concept behind "The Foodlover's Atlas of the World" is imaginative, and author Martha Rose Shulman, a renowned, award-winning author with 17 cookbooks to her credit, carries it off exceptionally well. She divides the world into four major culinary regions--1) Europe, 2) Africa and the Middle East, 3) Asia and Australia, and 4) the Americas. Then, in glossy, exquisitely illustrated pages, she describes the cuisines of each country within the region. Each country gets on the order of a half-dozen or so pages--the depth of coverage is thus outstanding.

This is fascinating information. There are no recipes in the main text (although a few are included at the end of the book). Rather, each country section covers in detail the history and characteristics of the food of that land. Here, for example, are the topics from the section on Greece (each country is presented in a similar way): "Staple Foods" covers cheese, bread, wine, olives, honey and more. "Festive Food" describes festival fare such as traditional Easter bread and savory Christmas mezedes. "Signature Dishes" is a sidebar that defines tzatziki, htapothi xithato, dolmadakia and other dishes. "The Influence of Religion" describes the influence of the Greek Orthodox religion on the evolution of Greek food. "A Regional Flavor" compares foods among the various regions of the country, especially between the mainland and the islands. "Food Through the Day" describes what Greeks eat at meals throughout a typical day. Finally, "Reading the Menu" presents a menu of restaurant meals that one might find in Greece.

If you enjoy cooking, eating and learning about ethnic cuisines from around the world, "The Foodlover's Atlas of the World" is for you. I recommend it highly.

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful coffee table book for the food lover.......2003-02-24

This book is very attractive and filled with lovely pictures of food, different countries, and often what's special in their culture. There is an excellent exploration of many different countries with 2 to 3 pages devoted for many of them. There is a brief recipe section in the back that has clear and concise recipes to follow. I really like this book because you can read it in small segments and you don't feel the need to sit down and read the whole book at once. The book is fasniating you will learn a great deal about different cultures and food that you may not be familiar with. This is a great book to thumb through for information and ideas.

From the different culinary styles and regions of France to the history of and cultural influences upon North African cuisines, the Food Lover's Atlas Of The World provides a wide-ranging discussion of various food trends, styles, and influences around the world. I enjoyed the first 70 pages of the book. The author talked about technique, finishes, etc. I was disappointed in the the actual objects. The patterns were not full size and there were no measurments given. It was all sort of vague.

Plus, I understoof Marquetry to be with the use of scroll saws and coping saws. The author never even showed these techniques.

It was an interesting view, but NOT for the beginner wishing to learn the true art of marquetry. It is, indeed, "simple."

"Marquetry" is the cutting and assembly of a variety of think woods (called veneers) to make a colorful pattern and showcase the beauty of wood. In Simple Marquetry, Mike Burton draws upon his more than forty years of experience and expertise to show the reader how to transform plan objects into esthetically impressive functional and decorative items with a series of easy-to-follow techniques. There is an extensive and basic "how-to" section for the novice, and one that does not require elaborate equipment or expensive setups. This is followed by fifteen projects ranging from a set of kitchen canisters embellished with rustic images to a striking contemporary design created by repeating geometric shapes. All projects include templates and detailed, step-by-step instructions which are augmented by photography. Simple Marquetry is ideal for the weekend hobbyist and a wonderful introduction to a specialized and enduringly beautiful craft.

Mike Burton has accomplished a feat that few author's ever accomplish. He has produced a "how to" manual that surpasses his original publication on Veneering. Mr burton has shared with his readers the techniques, tools, proper processes and product inter-actions seldom disclosed by an artist. The process is explained in such detail that failure is not even a consideration. Thanks Mike!!!!

The title of this book says it all. It does cover Veneering, Marquetry and Inlay. The book is a collection of articles from Fine Woodworking. Therefore, if you have alot of fine woodworking magazines than several parts will look familiar. You will learn a fair amount about veenering from reading this book, most likely more than other veneering books. However, the Marquetry and Inlay sections are lacking. Most of the inlay was about "Inlayed Banding" which can add a nice touch to projects. This book also touches on some concepts I know would be difficult to find in any other book. For example, how to inlay silver and turquoise. Overall, this book will prove valuable to me as a reference for teaching. :)

                      Book Description

This book describes how to design and produce decorative wood inlay bandings. It provides information often hard to find in a single location. Included are subjects such as: how to purchase and protect wood, how to design and create decorative inlay bandings, how to make a combination vertical and horizontal press. It touches on dying wood and wood veneers, and more.

4 out of 5 stars The best book available on the subject?.......2001-06-13

This book is a thoroughly amateurish effort. The layout is bad, the typography is ridiculously bad, and the illustrations are not clear or particularly helpful. Much of the book is extraneous to the subject, a folksy writing blend of which I am not particularly fond. The author does seem sincere in trying to be helpful.

Nonetheless, this book is, to my knowledge, the only dedicated overview of how to make your own banding. Moreover, it does this well. Total beginners may find the lack of information in some areas to be confusing, but my guess would be that anyone ready to make their own banding probably has enough woodworking experience to puzzle it all out.

Creating Beautiful Boxes with Inlay Techniques -- by Doug Stowe is a beautiful book that covers some of the same ground, but the emphasis on Stowe's book is more on the box than the banding.

Sometimes you can't buy the best book on a subject. You have to settle for buying the only book on the subject. I'm giving it an extra star just for existing.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent concepts for homemade Inlays; NOT for a Novice........2000-07-23

Mr. Loeffler initially expands on the terminology and concepts of wood and the woodworker's craft. It is very brief and introductory. The meat of the text is in Chpt 3 and 4, and sections of the remaining chapters. Chpts 3 & 4 provide the basic concepts to designing an infinite variety of inlay bandings such as multi-stage inlays, ribbon designs, one unqiue inlay he calls the "Duck" design. He covers the way the inlay core is assembled and built, the binding veneers used to bind the cores together, as well as how to manipulate the cores, binding veneers in multiple stages and sawing/cutting techniques to prouce the more elaborate and beautiful multi-stage designs. In addition, certain tidbits of valuable information is sprinkled throughout the text on issues one must be aware of when designing and constructing an inlay banding.

However - and this is a big however! - Mr. Loeffler does not expand into how one would (or could) exactly go about glueing the bandings, such as the types of glues to be considered, dry times, hold and set times, etc. He does not cover exactly how one would go about cutting the inlay banding from a core panel into the appropriate thicknesses using, for instance, a band saw, the tool he recommends - there is absolutely NO helpful or insightful informaiton on setting up your bandsaw, or other tool, properly cutting the panels to even thicknesses, or what blades and guide settings for your bandsaw. Lastly, no exact process is given as to how one would go about sanding the inaly bandings to even thicknesses and/or to an acceptable surface finish. As a woodworker, one must rely on your knowledge and experince with the bandsaw, power sander, and other shop tools in order to succesfully make inlays using this book.

Thus, although I highly recommend this book in order to understand how intricate inlay bandings can be designed and constructed in your own shop, I would highly recommend a good book on bandsaws (or accurately cutting veneers on bandsaws), and sanding techniques. Beautiful inlay banding designs can definitely be had using the concepts shared in Mr. Loeffler's book, but his book in no way guarantees that you will be successful at creating the finished product.

First impression: A cheap, homemade set of thoughts. (presentation/cover could be better) color pictures of the designs would have been better.

Subsequent impression(s): A well thought out and informative method book.

Although the book is in black and white only, the diagrams and inlay patterns can be clearly followed and understood. It takes you from the basics of wood selection, terminology and inlay design and building through to the tools needed. This is a very basic book that every novice could use in a concise and understandable way to get started in inlay design. Absolutely no prior knowledge is needed or assumed. This is only to start, but the author make it look so simple that maybe no other book would be needed.

                            Book Description

The story of a man in love with a place, a woman, and a dream.

Tom Stone went to Greece one summer to write a novel -- and stayed twenty-two years. On Patmos, he fell in love with Danielle, a beautiful French painter. His novel completed and sold, he decided to stay a little longer.

Seven idyllic years later, they left Patmos for Crete. When a Patmian friend Theológos called and offered him a summer partnership in his beach tavérna, The Beautiful Helen, Stone jumped at the chance -- much to the dismay of his wife, who cautioned him not to forget the old adage about Greeks bearing gifts.

Her warning was well-founded: when back on Patmos, Stone quickly discovered that he was no longer a friend or patron but a competitor. He learned hard lessons about the Greeks' skill at bargaining and business while reluctantly coming to the realization that Theológos's offer of a partnership was indeed a Trojan horse.

Featuring Stone's recipes, including his own Chicken Retsina and the ultimate moussaka, The Summer of My Greek Tavérna is as much a love story as it is the grand, humorous, and sometimes bittersweet adventures of an American pursuing his dreams in a foreign land, a modern-day innocent abroad.

The writer has a very straightforward style that I truly enjoyed. The fact that this was a true story kept my interest and made me put the Greek Isles high on the list of places to visit in the next few years.
The author's sense of adventure and risk taking appeals to me.
At the end of this book, I felt that i had acquired a good bit of knowledge of the physical aspects of the islands and even more so about the culture.

4 out of 5 stars A bittersweet summer on the Isle of Patmos .......2006-07-24

You laugh and then you cry when you read this bittersweet memoir. The Summer of my Greek Taverna is a funny, poignant saga of a naive American, whose Greek friend, Theologos, offers him a "summer partnership" in The Beautiful Helen Taverna, located on the small Aegean Island of Patmos. Although his wife and Greek friends caution him to be aware of "Greeks bearing gifts," Stone jumps at the offer. His life is never the same, arriving home at night, at three or four in the morning, completely spent, with no time for sex or even a cuddle, and up at dawn to start another day at the restaurant, only to have his partner swindle him of the profits.
Stone captures the essense of the Greek people and writes lovingly of them, the good ones and the not-so-good ones. My Taverna is reminiscent of many excellent books of American expatriates living in foreign countries, all with their own unique experiences. Memoirs of an American Housewife in Japan is one of many. In spite of his trials and tribulations, Tom Stone survives his ordeal and returns to the states. He opens his own successful restaurant in Southern California. At the end the book, Stone lists "The Menu of the Beautiful Helen," with 20 recipes of his favorite Greek dishes in full detail. If the story doesn't stimulate you, the recipes will. A good read, bon appetit. Yassou.

Reading these little expat memoirs used to be a pleasure, but now there are so many self-congratulatory accounts that they've long since begun to pall. Greek Taverna is a welcome exception. Stone manages to convey the essence of Greek island life, geography, and ambience without attempting to convince the reader that life in those parts is idyllic and carefree. Indeed, Tom and his family encounter as many problems and stumbling blocks as they might have in NYC, as well as enjoying the beauty and simplicity (all is relative). Reading his experiences is as refreshing as a dip in the Aegean. Bravo to Tom Stone for his honesty, sense of humor, and willingness to remain in Greece despite the bursting of the bubble of his dream.

5 out of 5 stars Stone's book on Greece is right on target in every way.......2005-01-25

As a Greek-American who was born, and lives in the US, but also lived in Greece for 12 years, I am always very interested in reading the experiences of expatriates, especially those from the US. I took some time to read through the other reviews here, especially focusing on the ones with negative things to say. I must say this, because I like to keep my reviews brief: Tom Stone did not produce the perfect book here, nor do I think we should expect that from him---what he did do was absolutely capture both the Greek mentality and spirit, the beauty of the land and its culture, and the very difficult divide in which foreigners who live in Greece full-time find themselves. I highly recommend this book not just for Greek diaspora who want to wax nostalgic of the mother country, but for ANY American heading over for a visit, if not a longer stay. I recently recommended this book to two proteges of mine who were headed to Greece for a short stay, and a semester abroad respectively, and both told me upon their returns that it was a priceless learning tool which enhanced their visits, as well as a very enjoyable read. I cant think of any higher recommendation than that of didacticism and real world, in-country experience. Well done, Mr Stone!

Save your money and read "Extra Virgin" instead.

In a book about someone opening a greek restaurant, it takes the author half the pages to even begin cooking his first meal. Much of the book is given to the author's whining about money, unfair deals and his struggles.

And to Tom (the author), thanks for reminding us that you sleep in the nude. That added so much to the book.

No laugh out loud moments here and the recipes are just really filler to pad the book.
