A wonderful book for naval historians.......1998-03-27
Admiral Galantin's book tells the story of his personal involvement in the post-war U.S. Navy in a readable and entertaining manner. His accounts of bureaucratic turf wars in the Navy were especially interesting to naval historians like myself. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

Visualy creative layout - needs more instructions.......2006-07-29
In my ongoing quest for more info on the how-tos of creating my Heritage Scrapbook, I purchased CHS. It is much better than Bev K Braun's book - CHS provides many intersting lay-outs which has given me wonderful ideas. But thank goodness I don't want to exactly replicate them because very few step-by-step instructions are offered.
Overall, I would recommend this book as a basic in your library.
Encouraging intro to family heritage scrapbooking.......2003-04-18
Memory Makers has once again produced an attractive, helpful guide for those of us wishing to expand our scrapbooking collectionl of page ideas. In The Complete Guide to Creating Heritage Scrapbooks, we are encouraged to tackle that most intimidating of scrapping tasks, the Family Heritage Album.
The CGTCHS launches with an explanation of the importance of preserving our family's historical photos, stories, and memorabilia in an archival safe environment (aka, the scrapbook album). A short introduction to basic scrapbooking tools and techniques takes up a few pages. The main body of the book which follows is divided into six sections:
Daily Life (documenting/preserving those "slice of life" moments in time);
Celebrations (weddings, graduations, holidays, religious events, etc.);
Wartime;
Across the Generations (comparing people then and now);
and Portraits and Family Trees.
Each section is a collection of examples of pages dealing with these themes, and instructions on the process to recreate the page ideas presented. I found them to be very appealing, tasteful and well done overall. To help supplement one's journaling, there are nice year-by-year historical trivia timelines printed on the marginal sidebars thoughout the sections, dating from 1850 to 1975. Several of these ideas will end up in my own albums.
However, a "complete" guide it is not. CGTCHS provides minimal information regarding researching family geneology, organizing one's search for information and a bare two page spread dedicated to the primary task of duplicating and restoring ancient photographs. I would expect these to be the first steps in researching a family history, but commentary on these subjects is scattered randomly. Also, to my way of thinking it was illogical to put "Portraits and Family Trees" last, as a family tree would be useful for keeping one's information correct as one completes other parts of the album. Readers who intend to put a serious effort into this aspect of their scrapbooking project will need to look elsewhere.
Other things I would have found helpful would have been a guide to era-appropriate color schemes and decorating themes, and more on interviewing relatives regarding their own personal histories.
Despite these drawbacks, CGTCHS was a great resource for ideas and inspiration. I finished the book with fresh encouragement to start on my own family heritage album.

Thomas Jefferson's Garden at Monticello.......2002-02-25
I found the book to be quite intersting and a valuable resource for the gardener. Thomas Jefferson is well known for his gardening efforts, both as ornamental and practical for food stuffs.
The book has excellent photographs of the gardens of Monticello as well as Jefferson's drawings of how he wanted to landscape the area of his "Little Mountain." There is great pride in the book to document over one hundred species of plants cultivated by Jefferson while living at Monticello.
Jefferson was a champion of cultivating indigenous plant life to Virginia and that of North America, but he had plants comming from thoughout the world also.
Cultivating a mountain top graden presented problems for Jefferson in both climate and the proper hydration of the plants themselves. Without all of the modern conviences that we have today, Jefferson managed to have some of the most beautiful gardens in Virginia.
This is a must book if you are looking for gardening proportion and scale. As Jefferson said, "There is not a sprig of grass that shoots uninteresting to me." Well said...
In the book you will find very good descriptions of the plants grown at Monticello, this is a must volume for reference.
The Man behind the Garden..........2001-07-13
This book includes color photographs of the current gardens at Monticello and black & white reproductions of Thomas Jefferson's own sketched plans for the gardens. There is an annotated list of the flowers and "woody ornamentals," such as roses and shrubs, grown by Jefferson. There are many excerpts from his writing and letters which give the reader a greater sense of Jefferson's broad intellect and love of nature as it relates to his gardens. I was hoping to find a list of flowers native to Virginia cultivated by Jefferson but, while the origins of many of the flowers are indicated, there is no separate list of the native plants as I had hoped.

So much better than the Davis/McKay workbook!.......2004-12-18
I am a therapist and have been looking for decent stress management workbook for my clients. Eureka! I found it here. This book exceeded all expectations. It's excellent! The feedback from my clients is unanimous: Achieving the Mind-Body-Spirit Connection is extremely user friendly, with an uplifing positive approach. The exercises (over 70) are exceptional. My opinion is that the Davis/McKay book cannot hold a candle to this new stress management workbook. The world will be a better place for it. I give it my highest recommendation!

The author does a passable job of informing readers how to invest and what pitfalls to avoid, but there are some critical issues he carefully leaves out. A far better and more honest investment guide would be "A Random Walk Down Wall Street" by Burton G. Malkiel.

We are not sure what book the prior reviewer read, but we found this book to be entertaining and enlightening. It did a great job in explaining the fundamentals of investing and was easy to understand. The author is humble in his presentation as well.

This book was a waste of my time and money. This guy is so full of himself he thinks he can peddle advice when he barely gets his definitions of basic finacial planning terms correct. Read the Richest man in Babylon and you will get all the advice you need.
A clear and entertaining education in investing.......2003-10-26
This book takes the mystery of investing and turns it into a common sense story of the history of who we are as Americans then finishes it off with a clear, principled approach to how to be an effective investor today and into the future. It should be taught in every school and be mandatory reading by every person trying to create an income for retirement.
Just What I've Been Searching For.......2003-10-05
I am very happy I found this book. The author uses very interesting stories and analogies so it is never dry or boring and I really appreciate how he explains things on a level where people like myself who have no previous experience in the world of investing can follow along. It seems he wrote the book with me in mind.
