André Malraux (1901-1976) was a swashbuckling character-a self-invented adventurer, a onetime smuggler of artifacts, a fighter in the Spanish Civil War and the French Resistance, an artist and thinker. Lyotard's Malraux is a man haunted by death-not the existentialist dread of living in freedom, but the certainty that we are destined to die. In his title, Lyotard alludes to this idea: to sign one's life as one would a painting. In Signed, Malraux, Lyotard provides both a compelling account of this fascinating figure and a new understanding of the man. In doing so, Lyotard not only explores all of Malraux's major themes-art, the Far East, women, politics, communism, antifascism-he creates Malraux anew as an emblem of freedom of thought for our era.

Jean-François Lyotard (1925-1998) was one of the principal French philosophers and intellectuals of the twentieth century. His works include Postmodern Fables (1997), The Postmodern Condition (1984), The Differend (1988), Heidegger and "the jews" (1990), and The Postmodern Explained (1992), all published by the University of Minnesota Press.

Robert Harvey is associate professor of French and comparative literature at SUNY Stony Brook.

Deconstructing Malraux.......2001-12-04

This is not biography in a traditional sense. In fact if you expect to follow thru Malraux life, you will be disappointed. Highly philosophical, and complex, the author is focusing so much on deconstructing Malraux's work and life, rather than telling us who Malraux is. Not recommended as a biographical work.

I purchased this book for my mother-in law because my father in law was just diagnosed with Diabetes. She was having trouble coming up with cooking ideas that were both healthy and tasty! This book really helped her out alot!

ADA- You should be ashamed of yourselves. Some of these recipes have over 80 carbs for one serving! This book concentrates on calories more then carbs. Diabetics should count carbs-not calories. Calories do not raise blood sugar- carbs do.

Not Just Good For Diabetics!.......2003-10-14

I bought this cookbook recently to give to someone just diagnosed with diabetes and spent a good deal of time reading the recipes, myself. It is a good cookbook for anyone who is interested in eating healthy. I copied some of the recipes for my own use. I particularly liked some of the chicken recipes as well as the recipe for black bean soup. Each page of the book is divided into thirds so that you can mix and match different foods as you plan your meals. When you get past that initial barrier of figuring out what is going on with the book, you will like this cookbook tremendously. There is a wealth of information here to make us all healthier eaters.

This is an excellent quilting book. Jensen has done it again with easy to follow instructions and simple patterns that are stunning. If you need something quick and easy or something more involved this book would be an excellent choice.

Genealogy Online presents a lot of information, much (but not all) of it having to do with finding facts about family lineage on the Internet. Mostly, this is a directory of big genealogy Web sites, newsgroups, mailing lists, and commercial services. It's also an introduction to Web communities and the tools you need to participate in them. These are the things you'll need to understand in order to extract and contribute information about your heritage as part of the Internet community.

Elizabeth Powell Crowe covers RootsWeb, the ROOTS-L mailing list, AfriGeneas, and the remarkable online genealogy resources maintained by the Mormon Church. She also pays attention to the Golden Gate forum on America Online and some of CompuServe's genealogy forums. There's some coverage of standalone family-history software like Family Tree Maker and some useful information about genealogical concepts like Ahnentafels numbers.

Genealogy Online would be better if it included more information about obscure Internet resources sites having to do with particular families or small ethnic groups. There are enough of these to make an annotated directory worthwhile. The author also could dispense with most of the general Internet how-to information, which occupies a lot of this book. --David Wall

Good & Bad points.........2002-05-06

Not so suprising that there's such disparity in the reviews of this book. Especially since most every review I read so far was true.

This book is good if: you are a genealogist NEW to the net. A lot of ground is covered, in terms of what kinds of software is needed (over an above the venerable genealogical database), as well as how to act/speak/do online.

This book is bad if: you've been online for more than a week. Too much ground is covered... well... look at the paragraph above... :)

I've found that some of the information she presents is a bit dated, but not so much so that a new user will terribly embarrass themselves by relying on it.

Overall, for myself (as a computer consultant of 15+ years) it did have some information to impart. Not necessarily enough to make this a "must have", but worth a read and recycle.

All you need to get started.......2001-08-24

I disagree with the review that says it's too American. There is a chapter on international genealogical resources and in the chapters on RootsWeb, FamilySearch and general search sites it shows how to search for genealogies beyond North America. In all it's a good book to get you started in online genealogy.

Technologically Inept and Too American-centric.......2001-06-08

I found this book a real disappointment. Anybody with more than rudimentary Web surfing skills with the ability to type "family history" in a decent search engine is likely to get more useful information than from this book.

For a "fifth edition", I expected a technically more competant exploration of geneological sources worldwide, rather than a book which devotes pages covering such material as spam email addresses, emoticons (i.e. "smileys"), and a lot of material which covers Web surfing basics. I would have liked to have seen more "meat" on how to get the most out of the online sources listed in the book.

Much of my ancestry of British + European origin, and again I was disappointed by the relative lack of information on the wealth of online info sources in this area that are available. The American-centric approach is a good one if your family has been in the States for several generations, but unless you're a native American, chances are good you have roots elsewhere.

Save your money, read the reviews here, and find a book that will better serve you in your geneological search.

Don't Waste Your Money!.......2001-04-21

Ms. Crowe has been writing about the Internet and genealogy for several years. In each new book, I expect her to have learned something new, but I'm always disappointed. I previewed the book in my local Barnes & Noble. Even without access to the Web, I found several outdated Web addresses, one of which changed almost two years ago! Doesn't she check these??? In addition, she still uses the term 'sysop,' a carry-over from the 1980s when people were using BBS's. It's time Ms. Crowe either learns enough about the modern Internet to be a credible authority on modern Internet-based genealogical research, or stops wasting people's time and their money.
