Lovely Book on Yoga For Children of All Ages!.......2006-12-08

Cute Book, which shows various, popular yoga positions and how to do them. Plus shows some great warm up stretches as well!

This book comes with a full size poster. The book is very well illustrated and has a very cute story about elephants & yoga that will captivate children's imagination. Have fun and happy reading!!

Great Book for Teaching Yoga to Children!.......2006-06-13

This is a super cute yoga book for children, starring (and narrated by) Babar the Elephant. It talks about the earliest days of yoga (apparently, yoga was actually invented by elephants, although they looked more like woolly mammoths in the illustration), and then tells of how it was rediscovered and spread once again through the elephant world not long ago. Babar then takes us through his daily practice, and ends with some ideas of yoga to do on vacations at a variety of famous places (including the Golden Gate Bridge).

Today, I used the book to teach the class at my son's school (children ages 4 through 7), and it worked out very nicely. I read the intro, then we did the asana practice (beginning with Sun Salutations, which is how I always start the kids in their practice anyway), and I finished by reading the last section of the book, which was all text. The kids were particularly interested in seeing the Golden Gate Bridge, since we live near enough that it's a familiar landmark to everyone. It was a very nice way to do our practice today, and it is a lovely book for anyone who wants to introduce yoga to young children.

I disagree with the reviewer that said the poses are too difficult for small children - the only pose I didn't have them do was headstand. Also, they didn't find the instructions at all boring, since they were actually doing the poses as I was reading. It worked really well.

A Darling Book.......2003-07-06

Hatha Yoga is generally form based. Elephants need to know the "proper" position for their trunks while they perform asanas. The author shows where the trunks should be positioned for maximum effect.

Humans can also follow the book's pictures, sans the trunk positions, and perform a nice hatha class.

Written in good humor for adults and children. I got it for my grandchildren and they like it. Babar talks to people as though they were visitors from another country, who need to be told about the wonderful things in his world. Yoga is one of those wonderful things.

I saw Jan Krentz on HGTV's "Simply Quilts" and so I bought the book. The Hunter Star pattern is beautiful and Jan has several methods for putting the quilt together: paper piecing method, strip piecing method, fusing method, and colorwash method. Beautifully illustrated too with clear instructions plus lots of pictures of finished quilts for inspiration.

As with her first book, Lone Star Quilts and Beyond, Jan takes a traditional pattern and turns it into something beyond what the ordinary quilter has imagined. Her instructions are easy to follow, and if you don't like one method of block assembly, she gives five others to choose from. Not only does she make the piece work simple, she offers an inspiring gallery of Hunter Star quilts, certain to appeal to both the traditionalist and the art quilter, the beginner and the professional. Like they say in the movies, I give this "two thumbs up" along with the traditional 5 star rating. You won't be disappointed.

After reading Phillips book I saw my fourteen year old daughter differently. I saw her as she really is and now she is free to show me her best self. I no longer contribute to her need to hide from me. Our trust has skyrocketed and we are having fun again. Don't let anyone convince you that the teens have to be terrible. Just ask Phillip and read his books.

A good book for beginning stock traders ..........2005-02-13

This is a good book for the beginning stock trader as it foregrounds the role of psychology in the overall scheme of trading. Novice traders who take to heart the book's admonition to "plan your trade and trade your plan" will be in a much better position than most traders who decide to trade by the seat of their pants. The narrative style of the book, as it covers different topics in behaviorial science and then applies them to trading, is unique and more entertaining than most other approaches you typically see in stockmarket books.

The only drawback I find with this book, quite frankly, is some of the super-optimistic, carnival-barker-style talk about the potential success of the trading strategies given in the end of the book. Even though I agree with most of the ideas presented in this book, anyone who proclaims that making 50% or more a year in the stock market is "easy" (especially without providing any performance information the past profitability of the strategies presented) is being disingenuous.

To be sure, this book is not the end-all-be-all of books on stock market trading. However, it's a great place to start and there are A LOT worse ways to spend $15.95 if you're interested in learning how to trade stocks.

Great book.......2004-03-20

This is one of my favorite books written on trading. I have read many other books on trading and this book is by far the best book I have read. Trading like Mark Crisp says I have made well over a 30% gains in my portfolio. This year is going to be even better with using some of his other ideas found on www.niftyinvesting.com (Also if you search ebay you will find some deals ;)) Great book I look forward to reading some more from this author. Excellent conversations about Cuenod's life and experiences........2004-08-09

This book is an excellent reference to Hughes Cuenod's life and experiences (even though it is slightly under 150 pages). For those who are not familiar with him, Hughes Cuenod was a Swiss/Brittish tenor, who was born in 1902 (he was still alive in 2003) and grew up in Switzerland and France for the first 30 years of his life. His trademark was his unparalleled expression and interpretation. He is famous for his singing of Monteverdi, French songs, Bach and Stravinsky. As one of the many things discussed in the conversations with Francois Hundry, Hughes stated that he felt his "lack" of voice was actually a blessing, as it forced him to concentrate more on the words and their meanings and their diction.

The conversations (about 12) took place between about 1986 and 1996 when Hughes was in his late 80s and 90s (he still sang into his late 80s and made his Met debut at the age of 84 to much acclaim). They cover his early experiences with music as well as the many people he met and worked with over his entire life. He talks about many of his recordings and throws in many anecdotes about various experiences and rehearsals. One of the most interesting was his description of his time working with Hermann Scherchen during the recording of the St. Matthew Passion by Bach. They both did not get along, but it was fascinating that both maintained an incredible respect for each other's musical abilities.

The book is fascinating as it relates what one very unique tenor's life was like. It discusses the hardships of World War II as well as singing while sick. It also shows what an optimistic view Hughes always had when it came to singing. Well into his 80s he taught interpretation and he recounts stories about good students and bad. He talks about how he first trained as a bass and later a baritone and then finally to tenor.

The book is a translated transcript of the original recordings. It includes Cuenod's complete discography. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in singing, as it describes the life of a man totally devoted to his art. Those who love Cuenod and his singing should snatch this gem up immediately.

These portraits of great formative Jewish religious and intellectual figures are informative and inspiring. This work is in this sense a great introductory work to Jewish thought in general.
