Book Description
Through engaging autobiographical essays and photographs, Portraits of American Continental Philosophers introduces twenty-two leading contemporary American philosophers whose work falls under the rubric "continental philosophy." The essays trace the personal philosophical journeys and orientations of a remarkable group of men and women and reveal a fascinating array of intellectual inspirations--spellbinding tales of saints and mystics, an undergraduate encounter with Hume or Locke, the shock of a racially segregated society, the experience of mirrors reflecting each other to infinity, Martin Heidegger's probing gaze, the explosion of student unrest in 1968, or a Holocaust survivor's search for explanations.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty good........2002-02-14
"Portraits" does a nice job, but there are a few people mentioned that were left out, and others that should have been excluded. Krell and Caputo's essays are worth buying it alone, but they left out some pretty important people like Hubert Dreyfus, Hans Sluga, and Edward Zalta. Anyway, I liked the book and it shows that the American or "anglo-continental" scene is getting pretty big nowadays among the past 10 year generation of grad students. Sometimes a little arrogant, but I guess that's ok since their foes (the analytics) have that, and worse problems such as being obsessed with paradoxes, puzzles, and liberal philosophy.
better than it might have been.......2000-01-07
Whatever the virtues of the American Continental Philosophy scene, the lords of SPEP and Perugia have also earned a deserved reputation for cliquishness and frequent self-promotion. When I first saw the announcement of this book, I was worried that it would provide just one more shameless platform for the canonization of second-rate thinkers. But in fact, the book left me with quite a positive impression.
Each of the 22 professors featured in the book is allotted 4-6 pages to tell us what they stand for as philosophers. Given this sort of brevity, none of those in the book can hide who they really are; their merits and vices come through in strikingly compact form.
Bernd Magnus uses his pages to present a Holcaust memoir that is among the most moving I have ever read. John Caputo gives an autobiographical account of his early religious interests that manages to be surprisingly modest. Thomas Flynn makes an equally modest statement about the past and future of Continental philosophy in the United States. Alphonso Lingis gets down to business in typical fashion, refusing to drop any names or preen any feathers in the mirror, giving us a genuinely philosophical argument in his ever-brilliant prose. There are other good chapters as well; these were my favorites.
Other chapters leave a mixed impression on the reader. Robert Bernasconi explains his recent interests with clarity and apparent sincerity, yet he is tellingly defensive concerning his limited publication record. Patrick Heelan meditates interestingly on the relation between science and philosophy, but his tone borders on abrasive in his attitude toward those philosophers who lack training in the hard sciences.
Ironically, the worst chapters are written largely by those who are currently the most fashionable and politically powerful of Continental thinkers. Charles Scott's section is a vague muddle of which little can be remembered 20 minutes after completing it. The essay by John Sallis is pointlessly entitled by means of an ancient alphabet (note: if the pre-Socratics were alive in America today, they would write in English and would regard Sallis' essay as sheer pedantry), and the content of his essay is correspondingly pretentious. David Krell reaches new depths of embarrassing literary behavior, while Hugh Silverman insults the reader's patience with an endless prose version of his curriculum vitae.
American Continental philosophy has had a troubling tendency to rest on whatever laurels it may have had rather than pushing forward into fresh domains of philosophical thought. By allowing us to take stock of what has and has not been accomplished by the SPEP/Perugia movement, Watson's book is a surprisingly potent contribution to its possible top-to-bottom rennovation.

Book Description
The complete resource for digestive health.
It's been said that health begins in the stomach. When digestion is not working properly, the whole body suffers. Skin rash, bad breath, headache, fatigue, overweight, and premature aging can all result from poor digestion-not to mention gastric disorders like heartburn, indigestion, and irritable bowel syndrome. But nearly half of digestive disorders can be averted with proper eating, exercise, stress management, and related lifestyle modifications.
In Natural Stomach Care , gastroenterologist Anil Minocha, M.D., combines the wisdom of traditional Eastern healing with the advancements of conventional Western medicine to offer a wide range of easy-to-use, affordable, and effective at-home natural therapies that can strengthen digestion, keep the colon clean and the bowels moving, and improve overall health. In addition to recommendations for overall digestive health, Dr. Minocha provides remedies for a host of digestive complaints. Treatments include healing Chinese herbs, Ayurvedic medicine, yoga, tai chi, probiotics, vitamin and mineral supplements, and lifestyle changes, making Natural Stomach Care an innovative, integrative approach to digestive health.

not worth the money.......2006-10-15
If you suffer from a digestive disorder (mine include IBS and ulcerative colitis) you are desperate for a cure. This book has about 100 "cures" but none of them work. If they did everyone would be cured.
Most people with GI disorders try everything possible because the medical profession simply doesn't have any answers other than surgery. I myself have tried about 15 different "cures" this book offers.Nothing worked.
I bought this book but don't reccomend that anyone else do so. If you want to read it, take it out of your library.
Truly an excellent compendium of problems and solutions.......2005-10-08
I bought this book after seeing a list created by its writer, Dr. Minocha, and reading some reviews. It lives up to its description very well. My entire family has GI issues and/or diseases, so I'm pretty well read on both medical and alternative treatments, and this book covers the 'natural' remedies comprehensively. You are given sufficient information to use a remedy, and enough to give you the knowledge to pursue additional information if desired. And most importantly, in my opinion, in many cases Dr. Minocha explains WHY these conditions can exist and why these remedies should work.
I wish we had tried a few of these remedies we didn't know about before my husband had his entire colon removed. I am still going through this book and know it will have a special place on my medical books shelves. I plan to buy a copy for our (wonderful!) GI doctor.
Excellent research, crystal-clear writing.......2004-03-11
I'm a full-time health writer, and after 15 years in the business I've rarely come across a book that so perfectly combines medical findings with practical, easy-to-follow advice. Dr. Minocha is clearly an advocate of alternative styles of medicine, yet he approaches his topic with the eye of a scientist. When I want to know what something does, how it works, how to use it myself--the answers are here. This book rarely leaves my desk, and I expect I'll keep using it as a reference for years to come.
Natural Stomach Care - Book Review.......2004-02-12
Digestive ailments, especially chronic conditions, are troublesome to millions of Americans. Without proper care and treatment, such ailments often reoccur and may persist for years. Dependence on prescription drugs for long periods of time can be difficult for many patients. An alternative to prescribed drugs for treating ailments of the stomach has been the application of "natural remedies." The "natural" alternative to traditional medicine has for centuries proven to be an effective cure for many stomach and digestive ailments. The use of "natural remedies" often eliminates for the user the need for drugs and possibly surgery. Dr. Anil Minocha, in his book, Natural Stomach Care introduces to the reader a wide range of easy-to-follow and effective therapies. Both the medical doctor and the layman will find useful the health information discussed in Natural Stomach Care.
It is surprising to learn just how many folk remedies are available to the interested person. Most of these remedies have been utilized around the world for hundreds if not thousands of years. All the material in this comprehensive discussion of the subject has been presented in a well organized and easy to follow format. The author first wants us to have an understanding as to how the body functions including the digestive process of food, the importance of restful sleep, proper daily nutrition, the reduction of stress in our lives as well as other factors which, when taken together, all contribute to a health life style. The author uses his many years of practice and research as a gastroenterologist to highlight the many factors that contribute to the wellness of the human body. Dr. Minocha corrects misconceptions that many people have held for years about the proper care and feeding of the stomach. In addition, he suggests many useful "natural remedies" for such ailments as inflammatory bowel disease, gastric ulcers, intestinal gas, constipation and other common digestive disorders. In another chapter he introduces detoxification techniques which, when applied, clean the gut of all impurities. A process that uses "probiotics" in which helpful microorganisms are introduced and help to keep the digestive process "in balance." Throughout the book the author provides helpful information on his subject, describing in detail each problem and how to either treat the ailment or the preventive measures necessary to prevent it from occurring.
Natural Stomach Care is highly recommended for people who are experiencing problems with their stomach or digestive system and are interested in learning about and applying "natural remedies" as an effective treatment for such ailments. Persons who are presently free of digestive and stomach problems will also benefit by learning natural preventive measures that when applied, should keep the stomach and digestive system properly working throughout a lifetime. Natural Stomach Care is a worthwhile addition to all consumer health collections in health sciences libraries and as a consumer book for public libraries.
Natural Stomach Care.......2003-11-25
This book is a winner. Speaking as one who has suffered with stomach disorders for a decade, I can testify that the information is solid and easy to understand. In fact, it's the most pragmatic book I have ever seen on this subject.

Customer Reviews:
Cute book for a child and their first puppy.......2000-10-01
This kit is a neat idea and would likely do okay for a child and their first pet, but not an adult scrapbooker or photo journalist. Someone who has experience keeping scrapbooks will need a little more to work with.
The entire book is done in the same color of yellow and red and every page has the same border of stick figure drawings of a bone, barking dog, tennis ball, heart, fire hydrant, and geometric shapes. There is room for very few pictures and no more than one on a designated page. The book has 15 designated spots for pictures out of a total of 48 pages.
There are some cute ideas for memories, such as a spot to record the first time your dog smelled a flower, saw a dog on T.V., and heard the vacuum cleaner. The book has a very "fun" informal look that would be attractive to a child but not necessarily an adult.
I loved the idea of the plaster-casting kit, however; be aware that you will need a very patient, cooperative dog to pull it off without creating too much of a mess.
I would recommend this kit for a child and their first dog, but an adult would probably be looking for something a bit more mature.

Beautiful and inspiring.......2007-09-07
As long-time polymer clay enthusiast, I was very excited about this book, and it lived up to expectations! The project information is very complete, with easy to follow instructions and photos, and the examples are inspiring. It may be a little difficult for someone who has never worked in polymer before, but I think the projects would be suitable for someone who has a basic knowledge, as well as more advanced artists. I have never been disappointed in a Lark Publishing book and they came through again!
The Art of Jewelry: Polymer Clay.......2007-07-06
I am new to polymer clay and have bought several books. This is the best. If I had to buy just one book, this would be it. Wonderful instructions and fabulous creations. This book shows just how far you can go with polymer clay, from fun to dramatic. I highly recommend this book.
A fantastic book!.......2007-05-11
I have never written a review before but after reading The Art of Jewelry I had to jump online and tell the world just how wonderful it was to have a book that was not to basic and not to advanced. If you have been playing with clay for a year or more this book will help you elevate you work. If you are brand new to polymer clay you might want to start with "The New Clay" by Nan Roche.
Great book, but instructions may not be detailed enough for beginners.......2007-03-25
I love this book and refer to it all the time. Although the instructions are not as detailed as might be desirable for a beginner, there are numerous techniques discussed with enough general instructions provided for the intermediate or advanced polymer artist; many I'd never seen before. The book has really inspired me to try new and previously unknown techniques. I highly recommend it.
Great for more advanced clayers. .......2007-02-13
I agree with the other opinions that this book has beautiful projects and photos, but just lacks detailed instructions. This type of book really needs to have step-by-step photos. If you already know the fundamentals of claying, then you'll follow right along. Beginners should get some experience and then come back to this selection.

Creative Metal Clay Jewelry Review.......2007-08-31
An excellant book that is a great resource for new users and old hands of PMC. The inspiration I personally got from the book is awesome and has sent my creativity into a high.
The book is well written and illustrated perfectly.
Excellent book to inspire you to work with this magical material........2007-01-08
CeCe Wire has a winner here, projects that will guide you from initial forays with this material through to more advanced techniques, such as ring making and sulptural pieces. A good solid Introduction on tools and equipment. The instructions combine both lovely photos and sketches which are easy to follow, even projects that are a photo of the completed piece and written instructions only are achievable. Whilst some of the finished projects may not suit all tastes ( what book does!!), it is the idea and technique that is useful, it can be adapted to a design of your own making. One of my favourites is the Twig and Leaf Condiment Spoon, I have made a set of these and the awe factor from my guests is wonderful when they are used. Nice to go outside just jewelry. I recommend three books to my Silver Clay students, this is one of them, with Sherri Haab and Tim McCreight being the other two. Well worth adding to your bookshelf.
Best for Beginners, in my humble opinion.......2006-07-20
I first borrowed this book from the library, and now I have finally been able to order it. I have used two other books on this subject, but I think CeCe Wire's book is best suited for me. I am a beginner with this material, however, I want my finished projects to have a certain streamlined sophistication, and I feel that of all of the books I have read on this subject, this book suits my needs and goals best. Ms. Wire has a wonderful grasp on the technical aspects of working with metal clay. Her projects are great for beginners, well illustrated and explained, but the final results are professional and stylish. One does not need to invest in many additional tools or materials in order to finish her projects. I also find that her projects and gallery of finished pieces provide a great springboard to encourage the reader to envision and create their own great jewelry pieces. There is a non-jewelry piece in here, but that does not bother me at all. It encourages the reader to consider other uses for metal clay, and who says jewelry must only be worn on the body? Why not create decorative objects as "jewelry" for the home? If you do not have a kiln, do not worry. I fire my pieces on my gas stove or with a small butane torch purchased from my local home improvement store. Also, I hear that bead and jewelry stores that have PMC or Art Clay Silver classes or paint-your-own-ceramics studios are often willing to fire your pieces for a reasonable fee. So give this book a try, I hope you will be as pleased as I am!
I'm not that impressed with the projects.......2005-03-09
I just received this book today and I leafed through it and put it down. Normally with a book of this type (art instruction, projects etc) I'll just get lost in it and read it from cover to cover. I bought this book based on the reviews here and also that Ms. Wire is the head cheese at the PMC Guild, but if I had seen this book first in the store I probably wouldn't have purchased it. The jewelry projects are not my style at all, and the layout and photography isn't that exciting either.
A better book about PMC is The Art of Metal Clay by Sherri Haab. I love the projects in there and the pictures are totally inspirational.
Great Clear Photos.......2004-08-31
This book has wonderful photographs that are clear enough to see the details of the jewelry and steps involved in creating them. I highly recommend this book.

Book Description
"The pictures...bring inspiration and envy to the heart of almost any gardener, and the text tells an interesting story of the royal gardener's victories and defeats."--The Times. Take a royal tour of Prince Charles' celebrated Highgrove Estate, led by the future monarch himself. In his own words, he chronicles his frustrations, failures, and finally success at turning his Cotswolds home into a matchless example of enlightened gardening in action. Every breathtaking photograph attests to his achievement, including landscapes of blossoms, meadows with wildflowers, fields with grazing animals, and elegantly established structures. The Prince has spent the last decade realizing this challenging and inspiring dream, and he now wants to share it with gardeners, farmers, horticulturists, and anyone concerned with maintaining the countryside and environment at large.

high quality.......2005-08-28
Prince Charles is all about high quality, in everything he does. In time he will be followed by others!
A prince's view / A prince's influence.......2004-01-02
Well said Your Royal Highness. This book is not only about Highgrove, the Prince of Wales' estate. But what it is really about is the transition from conventional into organic gardening and farming.Prince Charles has a lot of influence and connections to sources that can only help this planet to start healing.A lot of industrial methods of farming techniques took so much out of the soil, poisoning it with chemicals, and now it is time for us to gather and start changing our actions, and putting back what we took out of it.We need to think that every gesture has a consequence.A price to pay.
And that is why people of this earth are very lucky to have an ambassador such as the Prince of Wales. His battle to make nations understand these consequences is a hard task.
Of course we do not all have his kind of ressources. We also do not have a team of gardeners to weed and manage our garden. But think about it this way.We also do not have an agenda as charged as Prince Charles'.So every gardener, every farmer can do what this book preaches and prays for.Respect and listen to the land that is yours. As big or as small a parcel it may be.
We can do it.
I learned about the old ways of farming. Why they put the cows on a straw diet before calving. How to increase the chance of twin or triplet lambs. How to prepare the farming season, when to cut hay and why to do it this way......and the list goes on.
This book contains things the old folks teach us.Traditions handed down fron generation to generation.Things that you would not usually find in books.
"Highrove:Portrait of an Estate" is a Jewel. It should belong in every book collection, may it be as a coffee table book, but also as a reference for times to come.
Highgrove ...The Magic of Britain.......2001-06-12
I first knew of Highgrove when I read that Charles had purchased it with an eye to his tremendous interest in organic farming. "Another beautiful country home for the Royals," I mused. But, after reading this book, I began to realize that Highgrove was more than a mere physical place but instead seems to be almost magical in it's beauty. The photos are breathtaking for anyone who loves natural beauty. Prince Charles's effort at organic farming is nothing short of inspirational for all who respect our beautiful planet. And the house itself...... is a dream to behold.......

The Next Green Revolution.......2002-02-04
One of the reasons American farmers have been slow to adopt organic and other forms of sustainable farming has been the lack of truly credible messengers. Knowledge and sincerity are not enough; farmers need to get the word from other farmers, and from those who, themselves, have faced the challenges of inclement weather and a capricious marketplace. They need to hear from someone who has gotten his hands dirty. Farmers will find such a messenger in Jim Horne.
Jim Horne was raised on a family farm in Western Oklahoma. He has spent a lifetime in agriculture as a rancher and advisor to farmers and the agricultural community. Today, he serves as the CEO of the well-respected Kerr Center for Sustainable Agriculture. Together with Maura McDermott, Horne has written a book that tells the story of his journey from a believer in and proponent of status quo industrial farming to a leadership role in the sustainable agricultural community. But The Next Green Revolution is more than a personal story and more than an indictment of modern American agriculture; it provides the reader with eight realistic and comprehendible steps that farmers and ranchers can undertake to make their operations more sustainable-both economically and ecologically. As such, it not only inspires, but gives the farmer practical guidance on how to begin the transition.
The Next Green Revolution is well written and replete with personal experiences, real-farm examples, and technical references. It is advisable reading not only for farmers, but also for policy makers and for anyone who works with farmers. It belongs on the reading list of every County Extension Agent and Farm Advisor in the Country.

Upon reading this book, one finds that it's very clear the author is extremely supportive of the use of Kangaroo Care to cure just about whatever may ail your premature baby. Despite the repetitiveness of this, the book is chock-full of just about everything you'd need to know about Kangaroo Care.
I also found it was quite informative in the realm of not only the care of preemies (and their signs of distress/contentment), but of full-term infants as well. So, if you're wondering how best to help your small and/or sick baby in the NICU, or are wondering just what benefits the act of such skin-to-skin contact can bring to both you and your full-term newborn, the book is a very good--and helpful--read.
Great book.......2006-06-30
I bought this book while expecting our daughter, who we know will have to spend a fair amount of time in the NICU. I had never heard of the concept before, and after reading the book, am convinced that it is a wonderful concept and I can't wait to try it!
Beyond proven!.......2004-09-04
I discovered this book in January, 1995, when it was very little known. My son was born 8 weeks premature in a Honolulu, hospital that had never heard of Kangaroo Care. He was transferred to NICU at a military hospital after 11 days so I never did the KC there, but I did pass my book on to my son's neonatologist in hopes that this would be available for future parents/premies. I did KC as often as I was able at the military hospital and my son came off all meds and monitors 3 wks after his early birth. All he had to do was gain weight. He come home a mere 4 weeks after his birth, and 4 weeks before he original due date! I continued to Kangaroo him at home, all day long some days and he gained so fast it was miraculous!
Two and a half years later I gave birth to a full term daughter but used KC again because, "it couldn't hurt" and we never suffered those backwards hours that newborns have and I bounced back faster after this birth because I was resting more. Kangaroo Care is worth buying, in fact buy two so you will still have one when you pass one on!! :-)
For more than premies.......2003-03-13
Our full-term (37wk) son was in the NICU due to a birth defect. This method was explained to us as we started to be able to hold him and I was trying to teach him to nurse. All I can say is IT WORKS. He was able to go home at 6 wks when we were told he would probably be in for than 3 mos. min. When you think about it it makes sense...this baby was inside you and close to you for however many months you carried him/her. Don't you think dropping the child in a "box" with no human contact would be a shock to the system? I think that "normal" babies could probably benefit from this too. Lord willing, I'll get a chance to prove my theory. :-)
