He is committed, transported to Bethesda Naval Hospital in Bethesda Maryland, gets off a plane and is met by four Navy Corpsmen who force him into in a straight jacket. The sole purpose being to keep him quiet about the war crime. He is then forced to take insulin shock treatments designed to erase his memory.

I read this book in one of Sam's earliest manuscripts which he had sent to my father to read. He is a born storyteller. If you want to learn more about the Korean War and the effects it had on many unsung heroes, this book is a must read. I had grown up on some of the horror stories of this war from listening to my father. But this is one story he was never able to tell me. It haunted him for decades. He had finally made peace with it in the years before he passed away. This book helped me to understand my father and his demons. He loved the Corps and this was a very bitter experience for him. Thank you Sam for writing this book.

This novel is one of the very best I have ever read on military service. The author, a U.S. Marine, enlisted for the same reason many young men do. He believed in the values of honor, traditions, history, and duty which are bestowed upon all members of the U.S. Marine Corps.

Believing he is being deployed to Korea to liberate the South Korean people he quickly learns that few values exist in combat. Even in the Marine Corps where he has been taught that values are supreme.

In Korea, he experiences the very worst in terms of human behavior among those men whom he was taught were exemplory in character. This novel is a testimony to the brutality and cruelty of all warriors in battle. No matter if they are Chinese Communists or U.S. Marines. Atrocities are detailed which are often committed in hostile environments but are almost never talked about or written in a novel.

A real eye openner to American readers. Enjoy.

I was impressed with the extent of information about diabetes and cooking that preceeded all of the recipes. What a great resource this has turned out to be for me. I have enjoyed several of the recipes very much and was especially pleased to find that they include more nutritional analysis than other cookbooks I have (including saturated fat, sugars and fibre). Lots of recipes low in fat, sugar, salt and cholesterol and lots of real, whole food instead of processed foods and chemicals. I think this book was worth every cent and recommend it.

My mother loves it and I love it too. I first ordered this book as a gift for my mother who has type 2 diabetes. After enjoying the recipes that she made, I went ahead and picked up a copy for myself at the local store seeing as I can use a good dose of healthy eating. Of the main dishes we tried, I found the servings to be quite filling and the recipes were easy enough to make. I also found the sections about diabetes to be very helpful and easy to understand. Hopefully I'll be able to avoid getting diabetes like my mom by following the advice of cookbooks like this. Definitely gets a thumbs up from us.

I think the recipes are fairly good; however, the serving sizes are a joke. FOUR raspberries to split among FOUR people for a dessert with raspberry in the name? ONE olive per person in a salad... gimme a break. Other 'BIG serving' recipes allow one cup of soup, or one half a sandwich. I don't believe in super-sized servings, but I do think more than three bites is appropriate. And, of course, if you eat more than the suggested serving, then the nutritional information isn't really all that useful, is it.

I bought this book and have made at least 20-30 of the recipes. I have enjoyed all of them. My favorite has to be the "Refreshing Spring Tabbouleh". The Diabetic Gourmet Cookbook has a variety of recipes for all types of food styles: Mexican, Italian, Southwestern, American, Asian. I highly suggest that if you are a diabetic, that you buy this book. You won't regret it. And even if you aren't a diabetic, the food is delicious and healthy!

As a book, Hugh Johnson's Pocket Wine Book is a model of clarity. Wine buffs will find a long list of short but distinct entries, organized geographically and alphabetically within a country. There are also many tips on which wine goes with which food, the different ways to serve different wines, and descriptions of under appreciated and under publicized wines such as port and sherry.

Wine lovers know of the rivalry between wine critics Robert Parker and Hugh Johnson, and Johnson fans the flames with two pages poking fun at Parker's 100 point scale. To be frank it is hard not to agree that Johnson's system is better. A simple four star system to rate quality coupled with a highlight to show his own preferences. This strikes me as the correct level of precision for the topic.

However, this trivial dispute about how to rate wine overshadows the real disagreement between the two men, which is about how to make wine. Johnson believes in terroir (geography) and technology while Parker believes in traditional manufacture and grape varieties. Unfortunately, Johnson hardly ever acknowledges that particular dispute with Parker and completely lacks generosity to opposite viewpoints on these two issues. That I tend to see things Johnson's way does not make it less of a pity to me. The last failing costs the book one star. Or perhaps I should give it 96.5 points.

Concise, well organized and packed with information.......2004-02-14

Hugh Johnson's pocket wine books have been my companions for the past 6 years. The 2004 edition is no exception, with its clear, sensible advice, judicious layout and helpful hints.

The contents are divided into major regions (in most cases, by country, although Bordeaux gets its own section), so Cheval Blanc is not followed by Chianti or Chimney Rock. Each region is clearly marked with a handy color tab visible of the edge of each page. I've tried other pocket guides where the wines were in simple alphabetical order with all regions mixed together, and had a much harder time finding the wines and missed the "browsing" fun provided by Johnson's format.

The book uses a simple 4 star rating (a delightful antidote to the preposterous 100 point system), and easily understood symbols to identify bargain wines, good years and which vintages are ready to drink. There is a brief but amazingly complete section on pairing wine and food (the best I've seen, to which I refer often), summaries of the vintages of each region, along with brief information about grapes, serving and tasting wine.

When it comes to wine, your taste and opinion are all that matters. But whether you are just starting to navigate the world of wines, or are a seasoned connoisseur, this book will help your journey.

I have learned more about the wines of the world in this powerful, yet tidy-sized and easy to navigate encyclopedia, than from any other source. Since I run an event and catering company that holds a wine license and serves a sophisticated clientele, this book is on my desk and within an arms-reach at all times. When I write menus and I'm not sure where to go with the wine, regardless of the varietal or the vintage, I reach for this book. HJ uses a very easy-to-comprehend star system that rates the winemaker or the vinter. This in my opinion, is the single most-important tool to have in hand when making a wine decision - knowing the winemaker! The only thing better is to talk with the winemaker one on one - if you are so lucky!

The author is both very well aquainted with wooden boats and very appreciative of them. He does not advocate, as earlier reviews claimed, to simply "fiberglass over" everything. Good chapters on woodworking tools, woods (surprise, mahogany may not be the best overall marine wood!), paints, laminating and time saving ideas to get back in the water. I used several on my 36' 1965 ChrisCraft Challenger. Deals mainly with cruisers, but has a chapter on runabouts.

Great read, but a bit thin in critical areas.......2005-08-18

This is a very entertainingly written book, essential for anyone restoring a wooden boat - worth it as a fun read alone. The book is full of fun wooden boat philosophy, interesting personal anecdotes, and great stories. On the practical side, the author provides a good introduction to wooden boat types and construction, excellent information about selecting, evaluating and purchasing a boat for rennovation; planning and initiating projects; necessary tools and supplies; repairing holes in a wooden hull; and even some tips about building in cabinets and furniture.

The approach is admittedly "quick and dirty," that is, it presents practical, time-saving, and relatively inexpensive ways to get your wooden boat on the water, as opposed to nit-picky and involved pristine restoration techniques. The book isn't for the purist but for the pragmatist, and in that regard the advice and techniques offered are spot-on.

Unfortunately, however, the book is lacking in a few critical areas. Firstly, the section on hull refinishing - sanding, prepping, and painting - is insubstantial and unclear, with numerous contradictions and with no truly applicable examples. This is surprising, since the rest of the book is so comprehensible. (Indeed, ten highly detalied pages are devoted to wooden deck repair.) Also, the use of epoxies and their derivatives gets short shrift, and these days this is a critical area. It's as if here the author is an advocate but not an expert; recommendations about the use of epoxies in hull refinishing are dated and unreliable, and there is no mention of their potential, with fillers, for use in cabin or deck repair. For a book that prides itself on quick and easy alternatives this is an unfortunate omission.

Of course, for any ambitious wooden boat project you'll gather a collection of books, and be sure to add this one, since there is a wealth of good stuff here. Or get it for sure if you're an armchair boat refurbisher. But do look for additional sources if your main interest is hull refinishing or if you anticipate a lot of epoxy filler work.

I found the book both entertaining and very useful.

The author adds humor as well as knowledge which means you read for the enjoyment as well as the practical skills you will obtain.
The author covers every aspect from searching for a boat , restoring , repairing and the all important how to get a good fininsh on your final product.

Would recommend this book to anyone considering doing restoration work on a wooden boat regardless of size.

Just completed my last restoration project using this book and very satisfied with the results.

Decent info - but proceed with caution........2005-02-25

The previous reviews touch on the good points of this book, so I won't bother to repeat these. Suffice to say, there's plenty of good info to be had from this book. I would however express one word of caution. It has to do with the author's tendancy to push the reader toward approaches and methods that may not be appropriate for boats with truly historic or aesthetic value. Mr. Trefethen makes no bones about the fact that he wants to get the boat back in the water ASAP and minimize maintenance. To use his own words, "authenticity be damned".

A prime example of this attitude shows up when he advises his readers to paint over large portions of the brightwork to minimize upkeep. Of course everyone's entitled to thier opinion, but I consider this advise to be inapproporate for many situations. Once the wood has been painted, it becomes very difficult to return it to it's original glory. This can be a hard mistake to undo.

Many portions of the book seem to be infused with this sort of "quick fix" mentality. Even though he explains himself early on, I still found myself wondering at times why he even wanted to own a wooden boat. If vast expanses of easy-to-clean white are what he's after, why not just buy a Bayliner?

The Best Wooden Boat Book Yet.......2000-08-14

This is the first wooden boat book I purchased and it is still my favorite. I've even reread it a couple of times, something I've never done before. Trefethen's sense of humor and realism make this book a delight to read. His knowledge of the subject and his ability to put his ideas into laymens terms make this book very educational to read. You are able to soak up every piece of information without rereading a paragraph several times scratching your head. Buy This Book!

One warm Spring day somewhere in Australia an innocent fly spies an open flower. The fly is not large, a few grams at most, and the fly is hungry for the nectar which the flower offers. This flower turns a pink face streaked with white and red to the sun while a small stem-like organ, covered with glistening hairs, holds the flowers aloft. The fly smells nectar, so it lands and unfurls its elegant probocis to take a drink. This curled organ acts like a soda straw built into the mouth of the fly, and the flower even provides the fly with a convenient perch on its petals. Perhaps the fly will have to carry some pollen to another flower, the usual price for such refreshment. Quickly the fly begins to drink, and then wham! In a tenth of a second or so, the triggerplant blossom has smashed its trigger, the fusion of its male and female reproductive parts, into the head and back of the fly. When it is a young, newly opened flower, the blossom of the triggerplant uses its male parts, its anthers, to coat flies with pollen. When it is an older flower, the triggerplant blossom drops its male parts and instead uses a sticky female stigma to remove the pollen of other triggerplant blossoms from visiting flies. This ensures that the second flower is pollinated, and that male and female come together to form seeds and thus a new generation.

Triggerplants are also found in India, China, Japan and Papua-New Guines but of the two hundred identified species, the great majority are found in Australia. They grow in the same poor soils favored by carnivorous plants, poor soils in which they have an advantage in that they can obtain nitrogen from their prey. It might be argued: what is the point for the triggerplant to to trap insects which are catching and spreading its pollen, but triggerplants cleverly trap only insects that are much to small to help with pollination.

This is the first comprehensive book on triggerplants. There is a chapter on triggerplants in the garden and landscape which includes how to grow them and how to obtain them, eg seed sources.

A comprehensive, balanced view of Caillebotte's work........1999-09-27

Kirk Varnedoe gives us, in Gustave Caillebotte, not only a beautifully reproduced compendium of the artist's major works, but an unusually insightful commentary on his place in the Impressionist movement. Perhaps most importantly, he offers a vision of Caillebotte that allows us to see him as more than a "minor" impressionist, but as an original precursor of modernism who remained true to his own unique vision despite the influences of his better known contemporaries. The importance of late nineteenth century photography, and especially the new, shorter 28 mm. lenses of the period, on Caillebotte's treatment of perspective are analyzed in detail through careful consideration of the preliminary studies for "Rainy Afternoon in Paris" and "Pont de l'Europe". While the author is forthright in his views of the "unevenness" of Caillebotte's oeuvre, he makes a strong case for viewing what Varnedoe refers to as Caillebotte's "internal personal dynamic" as a driving force behind the artist's shifting styles and artistic innovations.
