Lock and Load!.......2002-08-28
This personal memoir of a combat rifleman in the ETO during WWII
gives one a bird's eye view of the dogface's experience in the battle of Germany during the closing months of the war. It is based on the author's letters written home at the time which were saved by the spouse. As such it gives a contemporaneous account of the author's wartime activities from a personal perspective. It is interspersed with other recollections of his unit's movement in pursuit of the German Army towards Berlin
and the long-awaited victory and return home to his family. It reads well and is highly recommended to all.

The Letters of a Combat Rifleman By Charles Davis
Books written by soldiers of their experiences in war hold a special place for me. I have the utmost respect for these veterans who take time to write down their experiences for future generations, so we never forget how horrible war is. Hollywood tries to glamorize war when in fact it is a dirty, dirty business. Private Davis was assigned to the 104th Oregon Timberwolf Division at Zundert, Holland. For the next 185 days he would be a part of the Army that pushed through Holland, Belgium and finally into the heartland of Germany until the war was finally over. Mr. Davis portrays his story from letters that he wrote home and a diary he kept of his days in combat. He tells of little known facts that the history books don't mention. History books and regimental records only tell of troop movements, battles engaged, won or lost but fail to cover the misery the foot slogging infantry soldier endures day after day. After all wars are won by the grunts on the ground. History books also do not tell of the mistakes, misjudgments and downright negligence of the command structure in combat. Most of the non-commissioned officers he meets know their job through experience. However, many of the officers of whom the author speaks have combat experience, but make many bad decisions that cost men their lives, including some of Mr. Davis' closest friends. As he pointed out, he went through three company commanders in a very short period of time. Total confusion, troops lost, misdirected movements of men, street fighting, night fighting are all covered in this book. This will give the uninitiated a glimmer of why war is hell on earth. He also witnesses first hand of the European War's highest ace, Major George E. Preddy, Jr. being shot down by friendly fire, while the author is trying to hunt ducks. Mr. Davis points out many of the glaring inadequacies of the training the men received before being sent into the meat grinder called war. Many would lose their lives from very simple errors, like not having their rifles zeroed in, misdirected fire from artillery, bombs from aircraft or being strafed by "friendlies." (Today we call this friendly fire or fratricide.) He also gives you an insight of the mindset of a scared, dirty, hungry, bone weary soldier who enjoys the simplest joys of life, such as a hot meal, a bath and clean clothes after seven weeks on the line or finally getting sleeping bags in January 1945. There was also the constant fear of death as men all around him die, or are severely wounded. By the end of the war in April 1945, there very few men left that he started out with 185 days earlier. I recommend this book for anyone interested in history. It will fill in all the dirty details that history books omit. Mr. Davis takes you back to a time of utmost horror in a contest that can kill or maim you in a heartbeat. Other times he talks of the civilians they encounter and their hardships they endure also.Besides being a war story it is also a human interest story. This is an easy book to read and understand and I don't think the reader will be disappointed. The publisher's copy editor should check for typos closer, as there is an inordinate amount of typos in the book, however this doesn't detract from the content of the book.

Book Description
This guide offers computer users who suffer from repetitive strain injury an effective program for self-care. It explains the symptoms, prevention, and treatment of RSIs and also addresses the often-overlooked root causes of RSIs. This holistic program treats the entire upper body with ergonomics, exercise, and hands-on therapy, increasing the likelihood that surgery and drugs may be avoided.

If you want to buy just one book on this subject, then this is the one
Excellent book on RSI.......2006-11-10
This is by far the best source of information and guidance on RSI that I've ever seen. It's the only book (along with dr. Pascarelli's books) that explains the true causes of RSI symptoms. It will help you understand what's happening to you if you have RSI, and it will help you manage your symptoms and find appropriate treatment. It's a must-have book if you live in an area or country where RSI specialists are hard to find.
Career saving.......2006-07-13
When I was managing a software development group, a programmer on the team showed up at work one day with wrist braces. Turns out typing had become agony for him. He read this book, then diligently and conscientiously followed some of the recommended practices (strength training, yoga, serious workplace ergonomic changes). The wrist braces are gone, and his career has been saved.
You can't fix anything just by reading a book. You *can* fix things when you understand the problem and have some ways to combat it. This book can give you both.
Excellent Resource.......2006-02-20
I bought this book after all the glowing reports and am happy to say it lived up to my expectations. Just improving my posture (one of the suggestions) has helped with my RSI.
Don't Want To Know Where I'd Be Without This Book.......2005-10-15
I have been putting off writing my review because I have so much to say and in the meantime my hands are not yet a hundred percent. BUT it is thanks to this book (in conjunction with THE TRIGGERPOINT THERAPY WORKBOOK, which I found later) that I am not disabled today. The doctors I went to were not only shockingly unkind but dangerously misinformed...so I feel it is my duty to pass the info. on ASAP and I will revise this review later.
It's Not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome! is the very best book out there dealing exclusively with repetitive strain injuries. What is great about this book is that it alerts you to the potential severity of the problem without terrifying you - it puts the time frame for healing easily at 6 months and possibly longer. Until I read this book, I had NO idea what was going on.
It offers charts to help you determine if you are a 1st degree, 2nd degree, or 3rd degree sufferer. It divides injuries into two basic categories: muscular and nerve. I would like to add that in my case there was also ligament injury, which was not discussed in this book. It also profiles the personality type that can become more vulnerable to this kind of an injury: perfectionist, obsessive, passionate about work.
My advice is that when it comes to books about this topic, read ABOUT them all carefully and then get all of the ones you need -even if you have to put them on a credit card, your HANDS are at stake! That being said, if you could only get two books this should definitely be one of them. Thank you so much Suparna Damany and Jack Bellis for illuminating this mysterious problem and analyzing it from a new angle.
Other Books I used and that you must look into to get a clear picture:
THE TRIGGER POINT THERAPY WORKBOOK by Clair Davies. Okay, finding IT was basically a miracle, because it provided the missing piece that NONE of the other books on RSI really explore. It is the only book that helped me even more than It's not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. I won't describe it here but the look inside this book feature on Amazon allows one to read the introduction. Basically, Suparna Damany and Jack Bellis got me through the first half of the healing process, and Clair Davies got me though the second half.
COMPLETE GUIDE TO REPETITIVE STRAIN INJURY by Emil Pascarelli: informative but terrifying, only read it AFTER you've read the others to better understand the dangers. But know this: braces can occasionally cause great damage, and a condition called RSD (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy) and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). Unlikely but horrific and important to be aware of so if the symptoms show up you can do something about it.
CONQUERING CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME by Sharon J. Butler: very nice exercises that seem to help a lot of people (though I was too injured by the time I found this book). Sharon Butler also has an online book dealing with DeQuervain's (a thumb injury) which was good and the only book out there specifically about this particular injury.
THE CARPAL TUNNEL HELPBOOK by Dr. Scott M. Fried: if you suspect nerve damage, this book is very encouraging about your prospects for recovery - and is the only book I found to deal exclusively with nerve issues. Also gave me the idea to just buy my own paraffin unit rather than pay for physical therapy every week.
FREE YOUR BREATH, FREE YOUR LIFE by Daniel Lewis.
LIGAMENT HEALING by William Weintraub.
FINALLY: PRISCILLA'S YOGA STRETCHES is an incredible TV program I discovered that comes on at 5:30am weekday mornings in my area on one of the PBS stations (apparently Priscilla Patrick has had exercise programs on PBS since 1980). Supposedly it is shown or can be requested all around the U.S., and it too played a critical role in helping me to heal and also maintain- better than any exercise class I've ever taken. Her videos can also be ordered (I plan to get the one called Stretch and De-Stress which targets neck, back, arms, shoulders) but I have not done so yet because with the TV show it's not really necessary.
Well, good luck and please, please, please get ALL the information you need to avert a potential disaster! Go sit in Barnes & Noble and look through these books if you're not ready to buy. But save yourself NOW. Also don't fall into despair! I was messed up for well over a year but once I had the right info I healed quite quickly! Without the work of all these amazing people I don't want to know where I'd be.

Customer Reviews:
Great for everyday cooking.......2006-06-24
Grogan's book interested me when I realized that my roasted vegetable dishes and other items were adding too much fat in my diet. I have since tried a few recipes and absolutely loved them! They are creative; they work; and they are healthy. I don't necessarily like the inclusion of textured vegetable protein, but I can use tempeh and other items instead.
A vegan celebration of the cuisines of the world.......2002-11-17
This is Bryanna Clark Grogan's second cookbook, and just like the first one, this is also almost-no-fat vegan takes on holiday recipes from all over the world! Whereas the former reviewer has a point that you should be able to indulge in your holidays if only you just eat healthy the rest of the days, I must say that I do not find the recipes skimpy. Try out the different versions of Bryanna's creme-filled cake roll, and tell me if you think that's skimpy! The book provides tasty, elegant menus for St. Valentine's Day; Independence Day; Chinese New Year; Muslim, Jewish, and Buddhist holiday foods; Christmas menus; a Greek New Year's Eve; and more! Bryanna's barbecued seitan "ribs" with smoky barbecue sauce are incredibly yummy - her Vegetarian Irish stew with Guiness Stout served with Colcannon (mashed potatoes with kale) from her St. Patrick's Day menu are much tastier than the humble ingredients may suggest. Bryanna's Lasagne From The Garden is also a guaranteed hit, just as the holiday baking chapter. All in all, this is a very innovative cookbook which really proves that you don't have to feel you're restricted just because you've embarked on a vegetarian / vegan diet. If you've just recently discovered Bryanna's cooking, be sure you're in for a treat - do not hesitate to get her other books! You won't be disappointed.
Only for the Serious Vegetarian.......2000-08-29
This cookbook is no doubt a joy for devoted vegetarians. The recipes comprise an excellent collection of very low fat recipes aimed specifically for holidays. As many vegetarians know, it is extremely difficult to find no meat recipes for special occasions. However, these recipes are not only for vegetarians, but also for health conscious celebrants.
My only complaint would be that most non-vegetarians (such as myself) will find the recipes rather skimpy and lacking the hearty flavors of holidays. I personally would rather indulge during holidays and watch my health on the other days!
Whether it be used for holiday ideas or everyday meals, this book certainly has merit for certain cooks.
Thank you, Bryanna!.......2000-01-18
This is one of the best vegetarian recipe collections I've come across. Unlike many veggie cookbooks, this one does not assume that just because you're not eating meat that it's fine to go ahead and load up on nuts, cheese and other high fat ingredients. As a matter of fact, the recipes are vegan, so there is no cheese or milk at all (or honey, I don't think...). The recipes are easy to make and very healthful and DELICIOUS. I love the no-fat basic cookie dough. Try it, it's amazing. I keep making them for omni-vorous friends and they are a hit every time.

Book Description
Leading knitwear designer Debbie Bliss returns with a complete course in knitting, taking you lesson by lesson through all the techniques and stitches. The book features 15 specially designed projects to practice new skills, and extensive stitch library, and 350 color photos and illustrations, plus charts.
Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2007-08-30
OK, so I had known the basics of knitting before I got the book. I knew how to cast on and off, how to knit (turns out, I used to knit tbl), purl and make basic cables. I was totally afraid of laces and the very idea of shaping sent shivers down my spine. Not any more! I sat down with a pair of needles and worked through the book and I made it, I can knit now. This book has everything - the basics, stitches, techniques and patterns. Some people find Debbie Bliss' way of describing patterns hard to follow, but I personally prefer it to charts. All I could possibly wish for is adding more patterns for adults, especially plus-sized adults.
Good for someone transitioning from "beginner".......2007-04-01
I did not use this book to learn how to knit--I bought it for its stitch libraries and these have not disappointed. There are pages and pages of stitch patterns from the very basic to the more difficult that are easy to read and have great variety. I have incorporated several of these stitch patterns into new designs. My brother is in the navy, so I created a fun scarf pattern using the "Anchor" stitch, and it turned out great. However, I would not recommend this book for someone who has never held a pair of knitting needles and has no idea how to knit: the instructions are brief and the diagrams are not very helpful. But if you know your basic stitches and want to transition to something a litle more complicated than garter stitch scarves, this is a great help!
USER FRIENDLY!!!.......2007-02-14
A nicely done book which can take you from absolute or advanced beginner to advanced quite easily. I like the layout, the photos, the projects and the simple way it's written. Also makes a good reference book for the advanced beginner to intermediate.
Knitting book.......2007-01-11
This is great for a beginning knitter and the pattern suggestions and designs are valuable for experienced knitters, too. I have been knitting for many years but bought it because I had seen it and wanted the patterns. It was VERY gently used but in excellent condition as advertised.
I would not buy this book again.......2006-04-11
I'm not a big fan of this book, really. Here's why:
1. It's not at all comprehensive. I've had questions about how to do certain techniques (provisional cast-ons, for example), and the book had nothing on it.
2. The instructions were not the clearest. I'm not a beginner, but even I had trouble with a few of the explanations.
3. The patterns are not great, but I'm not a huge fan of Debbie Bliss designs in general -- the garments are simply too boxy and bulky for my tastes. The baby blanket and some of the kid garments are ok, though.
4. There are some pictures of finished projects that are not actually given in the book.
The stitch dictionaries are nice, but not very inclusive, and most of the stitch patterns can be found in either the Harmony Guides or other books by Debbie Bliss.

Book Description
This is the perfect practical reference book, whether you wish to introduce new shrubs into the garden or grow a beautiful climber against a wall or over an arch.
Book Description
Becoming a new mother is a time of joy, hope, and sometimes a little uncertainty. In this timeless, warm, and heartfelt book, America's most trusted childcare experts help brand-new moms meet the challenges and changes of motherhood. Not a traditional baby-care book, this is about the process of becoming a mother and what that means. Above all, it encourages new mothers to trust their instincts and offers advice on how to bring out the best in their babies. and themselves. The irresistibly charming illustrations by renowned artist Coco Masuda add even more warmth and appeal to the Sears's comforting narrative.
Customer Reviews:
Lovely book by a loving, experienced mother of 8 .......2005-08-20
I love this book--I just read it, and I have three children. In this sweet little book, Martha Sears explains in easy-to-read terms the basic ways mothers of infants go about establishing a natural, loving relationship where both individuals' needs are met without creating a tug-of-war environment (which is common these days). Throughout the book, she and her husband, "Dr. Bill," encourage moms (and dads) to enjoy their baby, respect that their children are people with physical AND emotional needs from the day they are born, and lend support to the emotional needs and changes that a mother goes through after having a new baby. There are practical applications throughout, and it's a nice introduction to helping mothers set a firm foundation for the new relationship that is taking shape.
I have been reading for two years on the science and scientific research behind a secure, heathy bond/attachment between parents and children. The Sears' books are valuable assets for families who desire to establish a healthy attachment with their children. Not only are they both medically trained (William is a Pediatrician with years and years of experience; Martha is a trained RN & Lacation Consultant), but they have raised 8 children, 1 of which is a special needs child and another was adopted. Their advice stems from real scientific research as well as their own experience (mothers really DO have instincts!) One reviewer stated that the Sears claim they are the TOP experts on child care in order to make more $, but that statement needs to be qualified. They are "America's #1 Child Care Experts," (maybe because people like their realistic attitudes toward child care), but they say over and over again in their books that parents are the ONLY EXPERTS for their children, and to steer clear of child care "experts" that try to lead you to go against your intuition as a parent. They never claim that by creating a loving bond with their children that parents who practice attachment parenting (AP) will never experience discipline issues--in fact, they have a whole book about discipline ("The Discipline Book"). They do, however, describe clearly that children who have a strong, loving bond (attachment) with their parents from the time of their infancy, are more secure in this relationship, and typically respond more sensitively to correction than children who are not raised in a sensitive, loving atmosphere. These aren't just ideas or philosophies--they have been researched thoroughly over time (beginning in the 1930s), and there are many books (by various doctors, psychologists, and authors) that describe in detail the scientific study that has been done which proves, in no uncertain terms, the relevance of the mother/baby bond and how the quality of this bond affects a person throughout their entire life.
As others have said, this book makes a great gift...It's beautifully illustrated and will bless anyone with a new baby (even if they have older children!)...And I would even suggest that you pair it with "The Baby Book" or "The Complete Book of Christian Parenting and Child Care" by the same authors (so they will have access to more comprehensive guidelines in infant care in addition to the encouragment and simplicity of the "25 Things..." book.)
Wonderful shower gift or gift for new mom!.......2005-08-03
A friend of mine gave me this cute little book shortly after I had my first baby, and I have really enjoyed dipping into it for short shots of gentle wisdom, inspiration, and advice. It's perfect for a new mom because the chapters are informative but really short--no huge time commitment required. There are 25 chapters--each with a title that's a "thing" that's helpful for moms to realize, like "You can solve breastfeeding problems," "You really do have intuition," "You don't have to be perfect," and "If you go back to work, you'll still be the person most important to your baby." Then the chapter has some information and practical advice related to that topic. For example, the chapter on going back to work includes the great idea of starting back to work on a Thursday instead of a Monday, so your first "week" is very short and easier for both mom and baby to deal with.
One more thing: the book is small and lightweight, so moms can read it while breastfeeding. Being a chronic multitasker, I loved this aspect!
The Searses, how I dislike you, let me count the ways.......2005-06-12
Who decided that William and Martha Sears were "America's Top Baby Care Experts?" Perhaps "America's Top Baby Care Book Series Marketing Machines" would be more accurate. Any time people proclaim themselves to be a Top Expert about something, look with a suspicious eye - William and Martha certainly do, at other experts who espouse a different viewpoint than theirs. There are some good things in here, like Martha urging moms to take time for themselves and to remember that you and dad are still husband and wife, even though things are different now. But it's awfully easy for new moms to get sucked into their attachment parenting philosophy, and to believe statements that the Searses present as gospel truth, although there is no research to back it up. I don't recall the "cutting edge research" that the previous reviewer mentioned; instead I remember Dr. Bill saying that if you practice AP, basically you won't have any discipline issues when your child is a toddler because the two of you are so in tune and the child will want so much to please you. Sure, this sounds great to a new mom, but it is such a load of crap. Plus, while they do include a section that says that there is no perfect mother, and that's okay, I feel that they believe anything other than AP will lead to a level of parenting non-perfection that is unacceptable and guaranteed to turn out insensitive ax-murderers.
Steer clear of yet another tiresome rehashing of attachment parenting; the only guarantee here is that there will be more money in the Searses wallets.
A Fabulous Shower or New Baby Gift!!.......2005-03-01
This book is wonderful for the new mother--whether pregnant or having recently given birth. It is consise and a quick read. It is so reassuring--written by a mother of 8, who is herself an R.N. and lactation consultant, married to a pediatrician. Martha Sears describes how her years as a nurse did little to prepare her for her "very own baby." Nothing but time spent with your own newborn will do that! But, the reassurance of a mother "who's been there" eight times over is a wonderful thing. Martha Sears gives new mothers the permission to follow their intuition and spend time loving their new babies. She gives them leave to ask for help with household tasks and spend a honeymoon with their newborns. She describes the myriad of emotions new mothers experience. She presents some cutting-edge research the supports what many mothers have known all along.
A fabulous book! I highly recommend it!
Great reference for any mother.......2000-09-23
This is probably my favorite baby care book. Because of its short, concise chapters it is good for people who don't have hours on end to read. The format also makes it easy to look up specific topics. And since it was written by a mother, the book has a more personal feel to it than many child care books. Information presented comes across as good advice rather than a how-to book. I can testify from personal experience that the ideas really work and help make a more confident mother and happy baby.
