5 out of 5 stars Excellent account of courage.......2005-01-31

Mr.Cederberg brings his experiences to life as you read this book.A very vivid tale as Cederberg shares blood, sweat and tears,in the Italian theatre of World War Two.

5 out of 5 stars Too good to put down.......2004-03-11

The book is a novelization of Mr. Cederberg's experiances in Italy during the second World War. I couldn't put it down, I kept imagining myself there. A fantastic book. I hope this is not Mr. Cerderberg's last.

5 out of 5 stars A book that's too good for Spielberg.......2000-12-28

This book is not about warfare by the usual rules, of people being nice as seen in "Saving Private Ryan." It may even upset some folks. But, it is like the stories sometimes told by combat veterans in the Legion Halls after they've had a few beers, are feeling relaxed and are with someone they trust.

It is a story about soldiers who were fiercely proud to be Canadians. Americans were fighting for grand ideas such as "saving the world for democracy" and the Four Freedoms of Norman Rockwell. Canadians were there to do a job. They did it, with kindness, compassion and brutality as the occasion required. Sgt. Cederberg never brags about being Canadian; it was tacitly assumed that if one had to ask, they couldn't understand even if it was explained to them.

Read this, and you'll understand why Americans described Canadian soldiers "going about their job like hockey players."

They are like the Australians and Israelis, known for having an incredible espirit de corps. Americans are great for show, such as Patton insisting that all American troops wear ties and show proper respect for officers. One American mucky-muck, appalled by the easy-going attitude, remarked to a Canadian officer, "Your troops don't seem to have much discipline, such as saluting officers." In reply he was told, "Well, when a salute is needed I wave at them, and they generally wave back." So much for formal procedures. But, when it came to fighting, they were unsurpassed.

The US has a formal definition of a country, such as the Pledge of Allegiance, Salute to the Flag, and a national anthem which is played more than Coca Cola commercials. Canadians are less formal, but no less proud of their country. It's called pride.

In another story, Cederberg tells of the Germans firing propaganda leaflets which showed a naked woman sitting on the edge of a bed, while a soldier without his pants is getting ready to take off his shirt. The message was that while British troops were in Italy, others were having fun in England. "That a Canadian?" one of the men asked Cederberg, who replied, "It can't be, the guy's wearing a tie."

Don't ever mistake the Canadians for the British. As Cederberg writes, "I went out that afternoon with Albert and Alex-Joe, drank six pints of mild and bitters and threw up twice (once after punching out a Scottish corporal who had insisted we were a disgrace to British arms).

"He had it coming," said Alex-Joe. "because we aren't even British, we're Canadians."

Time and again, that spirit and typically Canadian humor shows through. So does the grim determination to get the job done. When stationed near an Italian town, they were warned that lone Allied soldiers were sometimes attacked by die-hard fascist youths. Sure enough, a Canadian was knifed in the neck. When his buddies couldn't find his attackers, they went back to camp.

A few minutes later, the Canadians began a mortar barrage on the town. Officers tried to stop it, and were gently restrained. Once they learned the reason for the barrage, they joined the cover-up to protect their men. When the Italian police came to investigate, every weapon was spotless with no sign of recent use. They left, empty handed. The Italians buried their nine (or 34) dead (depending on whose version was accepted). There were no further assaults on Canadians.

Wonderful book, wonderful story. Rest assured, Spielberg will never make a movie of it. It's too good, and too real.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Memoir.......2000-08-20

This book ranks with the other great classic memoirs of World War II: The Forgotten Soldier, If You Survive, The Other Side of Time, The Road to Huertgen, and the greatest, Those Devils in Baggy Pants. Cederberg writes in a manner that vividly describes the force and horror of war, painting images in the mind that are not easily forgotten. An excellent read!

4 out of 5 stars A splendid account of a WWII infantryman in Italy.......2000-06-12

The Long Road Home is the fascinating, if somewhat racy, account of Fred Cederberg's travels from his home in Canada to the war in Italy. Cederberg spares few details of the courage and the horror of war, and shows how love and lust often bloomed among the destroyed buildings and shattered souls. Cederberg's memoir is first-hand and first-rate, a must-read for anyone interested in seeing how our boys fared in the forgotten war in Italy.

4 out of 5 stars An American Philosopher in the Grand Manner.......2003-06-18

Charles Sanders Peirce (1839 -1914) was an eccentric American genius and the founder of the philosophy generally known as pragmatism. A difficult, erratic, and sometimes violent man, he was denied in his attempts to secure an academic position and spent the last several years of his life in near isolation at his home, called Arisbe, near Milford, Pennsylvania. Peirce may be America's most significant philosopher. Yet he never produced a book. His reputation, insofar as it is based on his written work, is based on essays he wrote throughout his life and on large manuscripts which his admirers saw through to publication beginning shortly after his death.

Professor Kenneth Ketner, the author of this "autobiography" of Peirce, is an acknoledged authority on Peirce's life and thought. He calls this book, "His Glassy Essence" an "autobiography" because it is based in large part upon a selection of Peirce's writings and letters arranged to tell the story of his life. As Professor Ketner states, however, the book is also in part fiction. It includes three fictitious characters, the narrator, Ike, a writer of mysteries, his wife Betsey, a nurse, and Roy, a Harvard PhD in philosophy who allegedly knew and studied with Peirce. The story line involves Ike taking an interest in Peirce based upon an old box of Peirce's papers that Betsey has inherited. Roy comes into the story to provide information about Peirce and, not accidentally, some excellent discussions on the nature of philosophy.

The mechanism creaks at times. The story line is artificial although Roy has many insightful things to say in commenting on Peirce. It is difficult to separate fact from fiction in the account of Peirce because many of his letters and essays seem to be melded together from sources written at different times and places. Ketner's protestations notwithstanding, it is difficult to be convinced of the accuracy of the account presented here as scholarly biography. Finally, this book covers essentially only the first 28 years of Peirce's life (with forwards to his death and to some of his subsequent writings.) There are two promised sequels which are to continue the story through the remainder of Peirce's life.

For all the difficulties, I came away from this book with a better understanding of Peirce and some inkling of the development of his thought. Peirce's own distinctive ideas beging to be developed only in the last third or so of this book. The earlier sections deal largely with Peirce's years in college when he was deeply under the influence of Kant.

The book makes a good case that Peirce's work is narrowed unduly when he is viewed simply as one of the first American pragmatists. He was in fact a philosopher in the large manner concerned about science, about logic and categories in an expansive sense of these terms, and about God. He was an empiricist in the broadest sense that William James developed with his term "radical empiricism". I also see strong parallels in the account of Peirce given in this book to Husserl's phenomenology.

Peirce tought the distinction between knowledge, or the accumulation of facts, and wisdom and meaning which cannot be learned from the books. He developed the philosophy of signs called semiotics and invented a personal and highly idiosyncratic philosophical vocabulary, including terms such as "Cenopythagoreanism" (see page 342) which stretch the casual reader' patience and may stretch the more serious reader's mind.

This book gives an excellent picture of the philosophic mind, in the person of Charles Peirce, and of the serious and consuming nature of philosophic inquiry. It is not a book to read for a full account either of Peirce's life or his thought. It does capture something of the spirit of the man and the thinker.

Readers who want a historically based account of Peirce and his times might enjoy "The Metaphysical Club" by Louis Menand. Ketner's book is cited in the references for Menand and it covers much of the same ground, Peirce's life, his relationship to his father, the mathematician Benjamin Peirce, the metaphysical club which met briefly at Harvard in the 1870s, the effect of the Civil War on American pragmatism, and much else. The distinctive value of Ketner's book, I think, is that for all its problems it will allow the reader to see Peirce from the inside out.

4 out of 5 stars "Glassy Essence" is a valuable resource.......2000-05-26

For me the book, "His Glassy Essence," has been invaluable. Ketner has pulled together information about Peirce's early life that I could not possibly have gotten to on my own. Since I am not attached to any institution, I do not have access to any unpublished documents. I am not sure I would have been able to find the information Ketner has laid out in this book even if I had such access. He has pulled together a great deal of information from diverse sources and put these scattered pieces together in chronological and contextual order.

This book has been immensely helpful to me for coming to understand the provenance of Peirce's pragmatism. Now, it is obvious to me that there was no abrupt beginning to the development of Peirce's pragmatic theory. Now that I know of his early exposure to qualitative discernment and aesthetics, I can identify these as central to the evolution of his theory of abduction-something I have suspected all along, but had been unable to nail down because of the lack of a chronological and contextual framework for Peirce's early life.

The author did a fine job of referencing information, providing page by page notes at the end of the book. These references were noted in such a way that they do not interfere with the reading of the text--which unfolds in a story-like way, enabling me to see how Peirce fit within his context. The biographical and temperamental information concerning Peirce's father, for example, fleshed out the cultural and familial milieu in which he was raised-seemingly as a crown prince of the intellectual world for which his father was a sort of king.

Although there are minor discrepancies (such as a brother who seems to have been left out)and occasional confusions when following the story line, I think that this book is going to be very useful for anyone wanting to know about the early Peirce. I am finding "His Glassy Essence" especially useful as a reference tool. I suspect that other independent researchers, like myself, who are working with Peirce's ideas, but do not have access to unpublished materials by or about him will find this book useful as well.

5 out of 5 stars Experience the Transforming Power of this book for yourself.......2000-01-11

As a Peircean supporter of personal inquiry I can't in good conscience write a traditional "review" like the Kirkus one which dominates this page. I write to encourage everybody to disregard the Kirkus comments and explore His Glassy Essence (and their own, in turn) for themselves.

Having read the correspondence between Ketner and Percy in Thief of Peirce, I know that Percy commissioned Ketner to write this volume. That said, I believe that Charles S Peirce, Walker Percy, and Kenneth L. Ketner are all speaking to any person whose interests run toward open-minded, evaluative, and exploratory inquiry into Life. What better way to discover your own Way than to see it in the life of another, namely Peirce.

Personally, I have no doubt in my heart that Percy would be pleased with Ketner's first installment of the life of CS Peirce. But, by all means, don't take anyone's word for it --- be Percy's sovereign wayfarer, pick up a copy of HGE, and discover Peirce's transformative power for you own self!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic and fun baby book.......2007-08-28

I purchased this book seven years ago before my 6 year old was born. I delighted in filling it out and keeping a history for him to look at in the future, and to write down those things that you just won't remember if you don't write them down. When I was pregnant with my 2nd child I purchased a different Baby book so they each had their "own" type. Every time I filled it out, I remembered how much I loved the Baby Chronicles book, and wished my new book was as thorough. Well, after 20 months, I have finally given in, and bought the "Baby Chronicles" book for my second son. I am transferring all of the info. from the other Baby book, and adding much more (of what I can remember). I wish I had bought the "Baby Chronicles" for my second son in the first place!! It is a fantastic book to fill out with great categories and adorable illustrations. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Baby Book.......2007-07-13

I looked all over trying to find the perfect baby book for our first child. This one was reccomeded to me by friends and now I am reccomending it to you. I feel that it's the best baby book out there, because it goes into such detail. And you don't want to forget the details of your little one. It's also nice cause there's space throughout the book for you to write your own comments. You won't have any regrets with this baby book.

5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Gift.......2007-06-15

This is an excellent journal for a couple of reasons. First, it's perfect for Jewish, mixed, or secular children. Many baby books include a page for the baby's first Christmas, a page most Jewish parents seek to avoid. This product tastefully sidesteps the inclusion of a page specific to Christmas. Second, this journal includes a section to describe the important details of the pregnancy. I am not a parent and am virtually clueless as to what a parent looks for in a baby journal. I purchased this book as a gift for a new mother who insisted she wanted to purchase her own baby journal. She loved the journal so much that she bought one for her second child and gave it as a gift to every pregnant friend (including my own sister). She called me recently to thank me again, three years later, for this gift. She truly loves it.

5 out of 5 stars Good baby book.......2006-11-07

Has a lot of neat entry spaces for baby development. Recommend purchasing before your baby gets here as it has a checklist of what you may need, phone number page for who to call, etc.

5 out of 5 stars The best baby book I've found.......2006-02-22

They thought of everything when they made this baby book. There is a place to write every milestone, places to attach pictures, a family tree, space for newspaper clippings, birth certificate, birth announcement, etc. This is the best baby book I've ever seen. Absolutely wonderful. I'm going to purchase the "School Years" version for my little girl, who will be going to Kindergarten.

I purchased this book as a companion to Designer Bead Embroidery by Kenneth D. King. This book also incorporates a lot of embroidery stitches with beading techniques. There is a good glossery and stitch index in the back of the book - along with some eye-candy photos of complete projects. Most of the designs are geared towards an "intermediate" level stitcher. It's a keeper!!

        Book Description

Every parent wants their baby to be body-confident in physical activities, self-confident in social interactions, and motivated to self-mastery in learning! In this book, parents will learn how body-confident babies become dynamic explorers, delightful communicators, and successful problem solvers when they can initiate age-appropriate play and interactions in a receptive environment. This innovative book teaches parents how to create an engaging relationship with their baby through FloorPlay activities at each stage of development during their baby's formative first year. When parents promote their baby's freedom of movement and encourage their baby to be an active participant in social interactions and a self-motivated learner in play, they are creating a supportive environment. By better understanding their baby's motor development and by learning to read their baby's preverbal communication cues (body language) in everyday social interactions, parents will deepen their bonding relationship and realize what a wondrous and incredible first year it is for their baby!

Parents (and caregivers) will discover the importance of FloorPlay through the book's many original parent-baby activities that invite their active participation and encourage their baby's movement, communication, and learning development. Parents (and caregivers) will develop their observation skills as they learn how to set up age-appropriate explorations for their baby and create more spontaneous play interactions that expand their baby's expressive gestures and postures in communication. This encourages babies to be content at their developmental level so they can set up their own action plans, games and goals and make their own discoveries. Self-motivated learning to mastery contributes to their baby's developing attention span, increased self-esteem, and pleasure in learning.

This amazing first year of development sets the stage for their emerging toddler to master new movement skills, elaborate on social communication skills, and explore new adventures just around the corner.

4 out of 5 stars "Amazing Babies" the book shows us what is Normal in babies........2002-03-23

Beverly Stokes beuatifully captures the first 12 months of several normal boy and girl babies. She skillfully reveals how play drives the child to move from total dependence to a social walker/talker. This is a very powerful book to teach new parents and health care professionals the importance of play on the tummy, on the back, and on the side. She shows through pictures the importance of being able to overcome gravity from the head to the feet-a baby's first year work.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing insight about amazing babies!!.......2002-03-12

As a nurse, I highly recommend this book to new parents and health professionals alike. The author provides the reader with a profound insight that needs to be shared by everyone that cares about their babies movement development, health, and well-being! Parents and caregivers alike will find out how much they can influence and promote their babies development by being active role models and moving with their babies right from the beginning...a must for all new parents!

          Book Description

This lavishly illustrated book establishes the towering influence of the scientist Victor Regnault (1810-1878) in the earliest decades of photography, a period of experimentation ripe with artistic, commercial, and scientific possibility. Regnault has a double significance to the early history of photography, as the first leader of the Société Française de Photographie (S.F.P.) and as the maker of more than two hundred calotype (paper negative) portraits and landscapes. His photographic and scientific careers intersected a third field with his appointment in 1852 as director of the Sèvres porcelain works.

Readers are treated to Regnault's own beguiling pastoral, garden, and forest scenes; striking portraits of the scientists and artists in his circle of friends; quirky images of acoustic experiments; and an insider's view of the Sèvres porcelain works. Regnault's richly varied photographs also encompass perhaps the most extensive group of family portraits in early photography, and his romanticized landscapes reflect a moment when the rural outskirts of Paris were being aggressively suburbanized and industrialized.

Occupying a unique and powerful position in the overlapping spheres of photography, science, industry, and art, Regnault was elected president of the newly formed S.F.P. in 1855. By examining his intertwined activities against the backdrop of French photography's nascent pursuit of institutional legitimacy, this book illuminates an important and overlooked body of images and the irregular cultural terrain of early photography.
