Not Hornblower--but a good biography.......1999-12-31
The author's attempts to draw parallels between the career of Admiral Gordon and the fictional Horatio Hornblower generally are stretches. I thought he needed to reread the Hornblower books before making some of the comments he did. His list of similarities in their careers in the forward would be more effective if they were accurate for Hornblower. However, the dates for different ranks are wrong. He also equates Gordon's enlistment at 11 with Hornblower's joining at 17 as both being "mere boys in 1793." Hornblower was actually old for a new midshipman.
However, we should be grateful that this dubious premise sold the book, because Perrett has provided us with a very solid biography of a typical naval officer of this period. Gordon is not in the first rank of Napoleonic naval officers, but the variety of his experiences and actions shows the type of man who made the British navy great. With the skill of the true historian, Perrett has dug out details of long forgotten actions and campaigns. His style is readable, and he has an eye for the sort of detail that adds zest to a biography.
a good book, worth the money.......1998-08-01
The life of Admiral Gordon is very interesting and the book is a pleasure to read. The comparisons between Gordon and Hornblower are not overdone, and even readers who are not Hornblower afficionados (like myself) will enjoy the book.
A good read for Hornblower fans and naval history buffs!.......1998-06-03
As a lifelong Hornblower/C.S.Forester fan, I read this book with some trepidation, but Perrett seems to be a fan as well. He proposes a new theory: that Forester created the character of Horatio Hornblower using the model of a real Royal Navy captain in the Napoleonic Wars : James Gordon (who eventually became an admiral). Perrett hangs most of the premise for his theory upon an apparent inconsistency in C.S. Forester's otherwise thorough nonfiction writing style. In Forester's NAVAL WAR OF 1812 (nonfiction),he barely mentions Captain Gordon's name, even though Gordon had had a brilliant and successful career. Perrett notes that Forester gives other brilliant naval officers full career write-ups, even including information on their families. This(in addition to a few other similarities in Hornblower's/Gordon's respective careers) has made Perrett feel that Forester was "hiding" Gordon, so to speak, so that future casual readers would not see the similarities between the real hero and the fictional one. This reader does not feel that there is quite enough evidence to support that theory, but the book is fascinating reading in its own right, and anyone who enjoys naval history will enjoy it. Gordon comes off as a brave, smart, and kind (but fair)captain, like Hornblower. But because we know so much about Hornblower's every thought, feeling, and motive (due to Forester's superb skills), Hornblower seems more real to me even than does Captain Gordon! Perrett, who has written at least 14 other books on military history, has however done a fine job himself, and Gordon's exploits are brought very much to life indeed. A very good read!

Book Description
A mostly true account of an involuntary mental hospitalization, demonstrating that the profit motive plays a defining role in psychiatric treatment. The narrator was hospitalized after claiming that there was a new incurable venereal disease, before anyone had heard of AIDS. After release from the mental hospital, the narrator has various adventures: life in an urban commune, telemarketing for a gargantuan publishing company, travel to New Mexico, working in a delicatessen, and studying physics. Insanity Factory is a modern coming-of-age novella that includes a recipe for brown rice burgers!

very interesting & highly recommendable!.......2003-08-01
this book takes on a subject matter of great importance. it is also wonderfully well-written and as entertaining as a book with such a serious topic can be. you will enjoy reading this book and entering (albeit temporarily) the insanity factory.
A book about seeking drugs and women.......2003-01-07
Insanity Factory (Writers Club Press, 2001), by Joshua Berlow, is a fictionalized account of the author's life, which included his institutionalization in a mental hospital. The author recounts various adventures and troubles he experienced at work and chasing women.
The book is fairly entertaining, and I even found one part hilarious. However, the underlining themes of the book were his never-ending quests for pot, fornicating with women, and trouble holding a steady job. I was surprised at the ending because it left the reader hanging without resolution.
If one is interested in a personal account of someone that went through the mental health system and found it to be a detrimental experience, then Insanity Factory may be of interest. Yet, the book is not exclusively on this subject, and it recounts more various escapades with women and drugs than experiences in an asylum.
Read This!!.......2001-04-23
Berlow's memior (thinly disguised as fiction, yes the names have been changed) is far richer, deeper and interesting that most coming of age novels. Berlow vividly describes his experiences in to very different places: Washington, DC and Sante Fe, New Mexico. Much of the book is devoted to his bizarre confinefent to a profit hungery mental institution but this is onlt about half of this vivid memior. Take a chance! Read it!

With a mix of horrifying medical accidents and warmly logical problem solving, Internal Bleeding provides a serious, if graphic, look at an industry where a simple mistake can lead directly to death. Happily, authors (both are medical doctors) Robert Wachter and Kaveh Shojania have as many practical solutions as they have tragic errors. Generally based on updated systems and protocols in processes like computerized prescription writing and physically initialing specific body parts to be operated on, their solutions are both sympathetic and angry. Pointing out impatient, overworked or generally stubborn doctors and nurses that are resistant to changing procedures, they also are quick to detail the overwhelming combination of low funds and the drive for profit that keep hospitals from always providing the optimum working (and healing) conditions. Most helpful to nervous patients (and you'll almost certainly be nervous after reading this) is a short chapter offering advice on how to insure you're well informed on all aspects of your health care. While the language--and solutions--presented are often complex, the knowledgeable, personal slant provided by both authors lends a new perspective to the continuing debate between abstract policies and daily practices in health care. --Jill Lightner
Book Description
This updated edition includes the latest findings on patient safety by two of the foremost authorities on medical mistakes.
Two dynamic physician-professors investigate (and re-investigate) the rampant errors endemic to modern medical care and suggest ways to prevent hospitals and doctors from inadvertently killing their patients. Emerging from these compelling stories and provocative insights is a powerful case for change–by policymakers, hospitals, doctors, nurses, and even patients and their families. Wachter & Shojania underscore the depth and breadth of dangers in medical care; more important, they suggest basic safety procedures and hard-nosed remedies that could make erratic systems fail-safe and save countless lives.

Great ideas for improving health care in the USA.
self-serving doctors write book.......2004-07-10
Why their way is the best way. I suggest you read What your doctor Won't Tell You. This is a gutsy non self-serving and tell all book that will help you get through our terrible health system
Interesting, well researched, and well written.......2004-06-09
A fantstic read for everyone- patients and doctors alike!
Brilliant, Inclusive and Wrong!!.......2004-05-25
This major effort seems to have touched all the bases. It leaves virtually no possible cause of medical errors unexamined. It does, however, seem to employ its excellence in describing gripping case studies as a distraction much of the time, often leading one's attention away from the root causes it seems to prefer not to pursue.
I refer, to cite but 2 examples, to 1.) the touch-and-go treatment of the selection and education of medical students and 2.) to the issue of the cover-ups that are the consequence of the "Brothrhood" of physicians.
Our impressively literate authors manage, disappointingly, to leave issues like these without much examination and to virtually leave considerations concerning them out of their "solutions."
They properly make much of the "culture" of physicians, yet offer no ideas as to how to modify this culture at the med school level, rather than after the wrong people (drug addicts, among others)have been trained and are wreaking havoc. Drug addicts, by the way can be picked up by tests before, during or after med school - as can asocial individuals. Such tests, strangely and destructively, are not employed in the medical culture (as they are in industry.)
Nor do the authors seem to be aware of the possiblity of, or to encourage the employment of, others than physicians and their handmaidens to try to right the problems that are killing hundreds of us daily. They, like most physicians, seem to prefer having foxes guard the henhouse. And, given the culture they describe, this traditionaly hubristic practice (self-policing or peer review) virtually insures that proposed solutions will be destructively doctor friendly and largely leave the patient to his own resources.
The systems oriented approach that they champion, and which the Bush administration and the AMA seem to have picked up on, has the advantage of being relatively easy to implement. Bush and the AMA are, therefore, all for electonic help for doctors, and advanced computers will certainly help, but GIGO (Garbage In-Garbage Out) applies to their computers even as it does to ours. And tired, incompterent, impaired or indiferent staff can readily compromise the efficiency of such aids.
Such solutions also distract from, and ignore, important needs such as those mentioned in the 2 examples noted above - without which meaningful reform of the medical culture simply cannot occur.
And so, I see their "solutions" as mere paliatives awaiting the more difficult structural changes that I and others have thus far only hinted at.
Reading this book is tremendously informtive about a lot of things (and it is entertaining) but don't confuse its contents with anything like a meaningful solution to the problems of American health care. It , emphatically, isn't.

Miniaturist and dollmaker.......2005-08-21
I found the pictures and descriptions very helpful. Good ideas and easy to follow, even if this is new to you.
MUST BUY BOOK.......2003-09-24
I was very frustrated when I was looking to but miniature dolls because they are so expensive. I'm a do it yourself kind of person and this book really helped me through the entire process to make my own dolls. The book starts with a description of all kinds of polymer clay and the author makes her recommendations of clays suitable for miniatures. The book has patterns to make women, men, girls, boys and babies. There are different variations for the different periods (for example the position of the breast to fit better the different styles of dresses, the shoes, etc.) It also has variations to make the dolls look older. The diferents periods represented in this book are: Tudor, Regency, Victorian, and Edwardian. It comes complete with patterns, fabric guidance and full instructions on how to dress the dolls and how to make the wigs. A lot of photos of beautiful dolls in a doll house setting. Do not get discoreage if at the beginning you don't get good results, the author herself advises to practice until your skills improve. It really doesn't take much. Buy this book, you won't be sorry.
Just Fantastic!.......2001-09-03
Very clear directions and instructions with lots of pictures. This should be the first book that anyone buys, if they're wanting to make dollhouse dolls... simple enough for a beginner. Historical details.
Excellent even for beginners.......2001-01-17
I do a lot of different handwork, including very occasional polymer clay, but I bought this book because my then 5 yo daughter loved it. Everytime we went to the store that carried it, I browsed patterns and fabric, she lusted over this book. Finally, I just had to give in to her before someone else bought "her" book. :-)
We haven't been disappointed. The illustrations are very clear, and very much to scale. I love having clothing patterns for the dolls available- they're worthwhile even if you never make one of the dolls. The clear directions make it almost easy to make a face that actually looks like a face. The supplies lists are very straightforward and doesn't include anything you can't easily pick up at your local craft supply stores.
I highly recommend this book, even for children. A 6 yo is a little young to be able to carry out the project on her own, but working together with an adult is very possible.
absolutely outstanding book.......2000-09-21
If,together with this review,I could place a picture of the two dolls I was able to make following Sue Heaser's instructions in this book, you would know why this book should be in everyone's library (that is,all miniaturists). Do not miss out on the author's "Making dollhouse miniatures with polymer clay". This is,in my opinion, another "five stars" book that I absolutely love.
Book Description
Here's a beautifully illustrated volume making it possible for apartment or condo dwellers, or those with only a small plot of land, a deck, pathway, or even a rooftop to create a garden in a small space. A creative and practical sourcebook of innovative ideas and simple techniques for transforming a limited space into a gardening oasis.
Customer Reviews:
Container gardeners beware........2003-03-02
Several things turned me off about the book. First, it's seems very British for some reason. Second, it goes in to pages and pages and pages of assessing your situation, whether you are a blind gardener, "the importance of design", then gets into water gardens and water features, and raised beds. Suffice it to say that it didn't seem very geared toward the apartment owner with a 7x10 foot balcony!
It's not there isn't useful information in this book, but it's about plants in general, though. This is not totally geared toward the container gardener. I guess that's said in the subtitle: Creating gardens on patios, balconies, terraces, AND IN OTHER SMALL SPACES. About 85 pages into the book, about types of hanging baskets, window boxes and other containers. Then it gets into container design where you choose compatible plant partnerships. But even here there's a little trouble, because the illustrations show plants that are NOT IN CONTAINERS but in a garden setting. From there you get into soils, how to propagate the plants, how to control pests (suggests picking off caterpillars will do...ewwww!),
I needed more from this book. I needed a book on containers and tha plants that grow well in them. One that talked about a wide variety of plants, especially those that grow well in my zone. I could care less about the parts of a plant and stuff I had in biology. In the very back, where it talks about "lack of space makes this plant list no more than a suggestion." Well, if they hadn't filled it with [stuff] what was off-topic, there may well have been room to discuss more plants. The main problem with this book, in my opinion, is that it lacks focus.
Bottom line, I guess it depends on what you need out of this book. This book works well as a general plant care reference book, but if you need a book specifically on the special needs of plants in containers, I'd try another book. One that was more helpful to me, and one which I consider my own personal bible as far as container plants goes, is called Container Plants for Patios, Balconies, and Window Boxes by Halina Heitz, published by Barron's. I have plumbagos, and while there's no mention of them in the No-Garden Gardener, you'll find useful references to them there.
Black thumbs be gone!.......2000-04-25
This is probably not a book for more experienced gardeners... but luckily I'm not. The writing on the design aspect of the non-garden seems common sense (and it is), but the book is a real treasure for the beginning gardener and those of us who just have two left thumbs. This is because it includes basic guides on such diverse topics as: plant biology, planting (from rock gardens to hanging plants), caring for the plant, propagation and pest control. Guides to planting and plant maintenance include diagrams and step-by-step instruction for easy use. The book's best feature though is its lovely photography; the photos are intended to inspire the reader with ideas about the design of their no-garden garden.

"Well illustrated, instructive and fun"--The Observer. Resurrect the forgotten art of the formal garden, full of elegance and enchantment, even in the smallest backyards. Intimate and complex or simple and streamlined, these 24 arrangements--worthy of a king but suitable everywhere--share such wonderfully theatrical devices as a mirror-image pair of beds or ornamental focal points to draw the eye along a vista. Once you understand the principles behind the grand style, you'll find them surprisingly easy to implement and to maintain--and every scheme comes with a ground plan, three-dimensional drawings, and a wealth of alternative suggestions and planting ideas. And, with such classic features as rose-covered pergolas, twists of topiary, apple tunnels, and scalloped hedges, they all bring year-round satisfaction.

Small Formal Gardens a Winner.......2001-03-31
At first I thought this book would be too sophisticated for a non-professional such as myself - I was wrong! There are many great ideas which I plan to use this summer in my own garden. The author illustrates many garden plans, I have decided to borrow plans from several of them. He also explains tips on how to use symmetry, how to create illusions using height and space, etc. He also explains the history of formal gardens which I found interesting. Another useful feature of this book is the listing of suggested plants for formal gardens and their light requirements. This is the first book I have ever ordered which I picked up and read immediately.

Great detail!.......2003-09-06
This one is terrific! It covers woodlands, grasslands, rocklands, wetlands, container gardens. Pictures are fantastic and information is right on target. The book starts with answering the question Why? Why replace natural habitats in our gardens - talks to the web of life, has a great drawing showing the interconnectedness; talks to "weeds" versus "wildflowers" (yea, they're the same thing), and so much more. Lots of talk about the use of native plants and the benefits as well as the benefits of attracting wildlife to the garden. Throughout the sections there are full page tables of plants, wildlife etc so it breaks up the text. Love this book! I originally got it because we've been planning to put in a frog pond for awhile and there's a great section on that but its giving me lots of great understanding for othergardens and wild areas too. As one writer once stated, "If you want to see wildlife, let your garden be a wild place."
an inspiration.......2002-06-12
for someone who wanted to be a gardener but just couldn't get excited about it, this book opened my eyes. I've always been a wildlife and nature nut but for some reason could not find a way to get enthused about doing the gardening thing.
this book changed all of that. four months after reading this book, I have a yard-full of newly planted native illinois tallgrass prairie plants, two birdbaths, a pond in progress and tons of birds visiting my six birdbaths. my yard is like a whole other world.
I highly recommend this book to anyone, but most especially to people like myself who need a "reason" to garden.

Not Just for Kids.......2000-04-14
I am an R.N. in an acute care hospital and this is the best book I have found for newly diagnosed diabetics. It's simple, but not childish. It gives all the pertinent information for a diabetic to get off to a good start without overloading them with a lot of medical jargon and technical information. It's officially recommended for pre-teens, but I find it beneficial for even adults. When they are ready to learn more, then they can move up to a more advanced book.

An appreciation of the life of Lord Lewin........2001-07-03
A must read for those who are interested in the Royal Navy. Also a must read for those who wish to know about the Falklands War. Lord Lewin was chief of defence staff for the Falklands war, thus the most influential military mind controlling the status of the war and advising Mrs. Thatcher.
