This gripping memoir tells the story of Second Lieutenant Odell Myers, a pilot in the 438th Squadron, 319th Medium Bombardment Group, 12th USAAF, who was captured by the Germans on three different occasions and imprisoned for almost three years. It is also the story of the men who were imprisoned with him. He was first seized on December 4, 1942, after his plane was shot down over Bizerte, Tunisia, then hospitalized in North Africa and Sicily, and finally imprisoned in Chieti, Italy. The Italian surrender on September 8, 1943, caused his release, but he obeyed an Allied order to remain at the camp in Chieti and was then captured again and sent to a transient camp in Italy. On his first night there he escaped and held out for five weeks before he was captured the third time north of the Biferno River. He was sent to a camp at Barth, Pomerania, where he remained until liberated by Russian forces on May 1, 1945.

This is not an unbaised review. I am not going to comment on the quality of the writing or the accuracy of the content. All I will say is thank you to my father for sharing this story with his family and friends. He kept the contents of this book to himself for so many years, and we all now have a new understanding of who he is and what he has experienced. Even though we know the central character, we were all engaged in this account and hope you find it just as engaging.

I bought 3 copies of this book one for my son and one for my daughter so that they could see what life was like for their grandfather and I kept a copy. The book was riveting and especially the pages on Hauptmann von Beck who showed kindness to the prisoners by smuggling food in his trousers into the South Compound.

If you teach or are serious about yoga and are a woman, get this book. The Iyengar name continues to never disappoint. Its a great reference book when you are finished reading.
A great tool for beginners.......2006-01-13
I first got this book from the library when I was waiting to have surgery for uterine growths. I had never done yoga, and I was looking for a way to ease my pain. This book can actually help with many mild medical conditions. It is set up in an easy to reference way, with lots of pictures and clear, detailed descriptions. Many of the positions even have 2 possible methods, one for the novice, and one for the advanced student. This is great when you are first starting out and you lack flexibility.
My favorite thing about the book is that it allows you to look up positions by name and by function. If you want to ease back pain, or just get more flexibility in your back, you can reference moves that aid the spine. There are even suggestions for building a routine.
I highly reccomend this book.

Great book! Very practical information. I have bought this book when I was pregnant. I was not confused what I can or what I can not during pregnancy. As well the pictures help believe that is possible to do yoga even nine month pregnant!
Yoga taught the traditional Eastern way.......2004-01-23
This is a reference guide written by Geeta Iyengar, daughter of BKS Iyengar, probably the most famous living yogi. The book is designed specifically for women who wish to develop their own self-study of yoga (Yoga Sadhana), and it covers not only asanas (postures) but also the other vital components of traditional yoga such as pranayama (breath) and meditation.
Geeta is clearly a master yoga practitioner who has created a comprehensive, thoughtful manual, but her book was not at all what I was looking for. Although I have practiced yoga at home for over two years, I was overwhelmed by the level of detail in the book. In addition, I found it difficult to follow, partly because the author uses only the original Sanskirt names for the poses and partly because the visual guides to the poses were all placed at the end of the book (rather than interpersed side-by-side to the instructional information included throughout).
This book would definitely not be appropriate for the casual, Westernized yoga practitioner, especially not someone who is using yoga primarily as a form of fitness. However, for someone who wishes to extend their yoga practice beyond the poses as well as to connect with yoga's original Eastern roots, this book may be ideal.
Competent Reference Book.......2001-12-06
This book, written by the daughter of the famous teacher, B.K.S. Iyengar, is a nice enough reference book but would not be my first choice for a beginning North American yoga student. It contains brief, rather dry, descriptions of yoga philosophy (neither engaging for a novice nor sophisticated enough for a serious student of yoga). The book contains many useful black and white photos of yoga poses. There is a good section on yoga during pregnancy.
However, this book is not as visually appealing as many others on the market. There are several recently published yoga books with large color photos that lie flat for use during practice and which have more readable text. For example, Mira Mehta, a long time student of B.K.S. Iyengar, has a couple of nice books. I particularly like her book, How to Use Yoga. Mr. Iyengar, himself, has written many books, and his new book, Yoga: the Path to Holistic Health, is lovely.

Pretty, But Disappointing.......2007-09-27
The photography is beautiful, but the title is misleading if you equate 'easy' with 'quick' or 'convenient'. This book has some wonderful recipes that would be great for a brunch or other planned get-together, but it is totally unsuited as a guide for your average take-along meal. Most of the wraps don't travel well, although they are good when eaten immediately after being made, and many of the recipes can be fairly time-consuming. The best recipes are in the breakfast section - if you have time to make them, the Apple Jack wraps are great for feeding a busy family as they rush out the door on a weekday morning. Hot oatmeal on the go!

This is a great book, I made a few recipies in it and really I only had one wrap that turned out bad. Other than that, everything in this book is really easy to make and from what I've had, the food has been excellent.
Fun book.......2006-07-13
This has a fun, international and cuisine-style selection, but with minimal exotic-ingredient searching. Sometimes I even make the recipes - dare I say it - without the wrap. Sometimes you want a cookbook that has authentic, exotic recipes, but other times you want a fun, easy way to sample basic versions of different style food - Creole, Thai, German, French, South American, Jamaican, etc.

The book is excellent, but the vendor has managed to leave quite a few of his/her marks on it. I supposedly bought a "like new" copy, but "much much shabbily used" would be more like it.
The recipes themselves are adventurous, versatile and achievable.
Great recipes for picnics or food on the go........2005-05-19
I do a lot of hiking & bike riding, and I bought this book to get some ideas for lunches that I could make in the morning and take with me. As for the previous review's comments, this book does have some recipes with unusual ingredients, but most are easily found in an average grocery store. This book does not promise to be a pantry-cookbook (in other words, you may not have all the ingredients on hand). What it does deliver is many great recipes for wraps. Some of my favorites are the "Pizza Pie" wrap, "Ice Cream wrapwich" and the Ceasar wrap (called "Render unto caesar"). Give this book a try and I think you will find several if not many recipes that you will want to make again and again.

Good pictures, bad info.......2003-03-21
This book is totally inappropriate for anyone looking for how to properly care for a hedgehog. Pictures shown have no relation to the text. For example, a picture with a person holding a hedgehog with bare hands has a caption that says to always hold hedgehogs with a glove- which isn't a very good idea. It obviously wasn't edited very well- some parts are very redundant. Mr. Kelsey-wood obviously didn't put very much time into content- more effort went into photographs. The photographs, however, are great. If you want a book of hedgehog pictures, this is a good one. If you want a book with content on how to take care of hedgehogs, you should buy another book.
Good photos, terrible information.......2001-09-20
All of Kelsey-Woods' books have terrific photos, but poorly organized and often inaccurate information. Sections on hedgehog diet recommend foods that are high in fat, low in protein -- exactly the opposite of what a hedgehog needs. He also recommends the use of gloves while handling hedgehogs -- a true no-no if you ever expect your pet to bond with you. The habitats shown in the book are not large enough for an active hedgehog.
This book is widely distributed, and I am sad every time I see it displayed in a bookstore. Hedgehogs all over the country are receiving sub-standard care because of this book.
Not Worth the Money.......1998-01-01
There is a lot of mis-information in this book. I am a Hedgehog owner and I disagree with many of the handling tips - such as "always wear gloves" - that Mr. Kelsey-Wood recommends. An interesting note: all of the photos show hedgies being held without gloves. This book has a lot of glossy pictures that are not related to the text on the page. This confuses the reader who may be looking for an illustration of the text being read. It is not a very well organized book and should not be used by a novice Hedgehog owner.

Want to make some quilts that look intricate and difficult, but are not nearly as hard to do as they look? This is a great book to get! The patterns are beautiful, but the difficulty level isn't nearly as high as I would have thought it would be.

Most Americans probably don't hold Bader in quite the same esteem that the Brits do, but they should. He was an extraordinary person, pilot, warrior, and gentleman. I really enjoyed his discussions of the Hurricane and Spitfire. A must have for any warplane enthusiast.

Light Read For Serious WW2 Readers........2006-01-09
I purchased and just got a used copy of this hardcover edition book and was very surprised. It is pretty light on the words and very very heavy on photos. I bought this after reading "Reach For The Sky" the biography of Bader's war years, a highly recommended book. This I guess since it's autobiographical, and Bader not wanting to crow to loudly talks a little about himself and a little about his fellow pilots. Its about 180 pages long and I'd say has about half of that with solid text and half filled with cool photos, many in colour. A worthwhile book but didn't really enlighten any past "Reach For The Sky". A good chapter on Hurricat's though, Hurricanes that were rocket catapulted off merchant ships decks to defend against Condor bombers. The pilot would have to bail out after action because not enough fuel to reach land! Desperate times and all that, eh old boy?

Douglas Bader was my Fathers Hero when he was growing up. The reason for this is douglas Bader lost his legs in a aircraft crash. And my father was unable to walk due to Polio. He loved this book as did I. There are some very very good photos of spitfire's and Hurricanes, these tell what it was like!
Ever wondered what it was like to be back in WWII flying the most beautiful aircraft in the sky, the spitfire? If so you need to buy this book!
