General, minister of war, prime minister, and unrepentant ultranationalist, Hideki Tojo (1884-1948) was the most powerful leader in the Japanese government during World War II. From October 1941 to July 1944 he held unquestioned control, advocating and setting in motion the attack on Pearl Harbor as well as pushing forward the Japanese offensives in China, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific. The author examines Tojo's life against the backdrop of increasing Japanese militarism-Civil war, political assassinations, and coup d'états-and uses exclusive interviews with Tojo's wife to illuminate the spartan, single-minded, incorruptible personality of the man who chose war rather than succumb to U.S.-induced economic strangulation. From the initial victories, through the later severe defeats and Tojo's resignation, to his thwarted suicide attempt, trial as a war criminal, and execution, no other book offers such a clear and compelling portrait.

Browne has written an excellent summary of Japanese governmental history during the first half of the twentieth century rather than a biography of Tojo. Pages go by with no mention of the biography's purported subject. When Tojo does receive attention, it is usually a bare summary of his actions. There is little attempt to get inside his mind or to provide personal context. Similarly, the photos section has relatively few photos of Tojo. The book is very good but its title ought to be "Japan: Government 1900-1945."

This book is a no-nonsense presentation of the facts about cholesterol. Finally I have seen something that actually tells the truth instead of twisting everything into a self-serving set of misleading statements designed to sell a product.
This book is a refreshing change. Dr. Cohen gives both sides of the research and carefully explains what the different studies actually mean.
He makes no broad sweeping generalizations about statin drugs. Some people can benefit; others can use alternatives.
He explains all the options and why.

This book provides very useful information regarding the average cholesterol reductions based upon specific statin and dose being taken. It also provides interesting information regarding how beginning doses are arrived at and how the drug companies may be encouraging doctors to prescribe dosages that are actually in excess of a patient's needs. Provides both pros and cons and, if one assumes that the information is factual, provides an excellent base for the reader to develop own decisions.
As to alternative treatments, the book does not add a lot of valuable information but that is not why I purchased it anyway. I was most interested in the pros and cons of using statin drugs. For such purpose, it is an excellent source for information.
Helps sort out the confusing information out there..........2006-02-11
I just got this book today, and I am amazed at how much I have learned already. Dr. Cohen provides crucial information about how your doctor may prescribe far too high a dose of statins, and how to recognize and deal with drug side effects.
The book also provides easy-to-understand information about natural alternatives (or complements) to statins, including Co-Q10, Red Yeast Rice, Plant Sterols, Policosanol, Niacin and others. I think this book will help me reduce my statin use and be able to control my cholesterol through other natural alternatives. There are a lot of products out there claiming to lower your cholesterol, and Dr. Cohen provides objective information and study data regarding many of those products, independent of commercial propaganda.
Update six months later - with the advice of this book, I was able to lower my cholesterol from 310 to 192 in two months, using a combination of very low-dose statins, Policosanol (from sugar cane), Co-Q10, Fish Oil and plant sterols, as well as regular exercise. My Ldl is considered "optimal" now, after being "extremely high" just weeks ago. My doctor wanted to give me 40mg of Zocor, and I achieved my ideal Ldl with only 10mg. So, needless to say, I think this book is worth reading if you are considering statin therapy or just trying to get your cholesterol down.

Good on "What You Must Know" - Skimpy on "Natural Alternatives".......2005-08-03
This is a tough subject. Some people consider statins as the ultimate wonder drug...others consider statins to be the ultimate evil drug. Lots and lots of BS in the newsgroups.
Cohen does an excellent job in explaining how to use statins while minimizing the possibility of adverse side-effects. His approach makes a lot of sense.
Unfortunately, there is no natural alternative "magic bullet". So don't expect to find any natural alternative even close to statins in effectiveness. He does weed out a couple of ineffective natural alternatives.

I gave this book 1 star because a negative score is not offered. I have been a professional chef for four years and decided to learn a bit about Brazilian cooking. However, this book is far from helpful. It contains such facinaiting and informative suggestions such as "cook in hot oven until done." What a great suggestion to have in a recipe. What temperature should you set the oven at? Don't worry about it, just get it "hot"; how long should you cook? Don't worry, when it's done, it will tell you, or perhaps you will telepathically know? This book is about as effective as the guy you gives you directions by saying "Drive down the road a bit and then turn."
One has a better chance of learning Brazilian cooking through osmosis than from using this cookbook.

Many of the recipes in this book I ate when I was a child! Too bad the editors where not really careful with the translation... There are too many Portuguese mistakes.
Great "AUTHENTIC" brasilian recipes.......2000-02-19
I have many "brazilian" cookbooks, but this one is the only one that was right on. Many of the recipes are ones that my "vovo" (grandma) made. I have made many of the dishes & found the recipes easy to follow. They taste delicious!
An excellent pick of Brazilian Recipes.......2000-01-05
I have read through this book and I found it very diverse and delightfull. This book picks recipes from various parts of Brazil, which translates to a great variety of the Brazilian taste. One thing that impressed me was that the ingredients are listed in the English measurement system and not the metric one; this saves a lot of headaches and time for there is no need for conversion. I have tried some of the recipes and they taste just like the ones back home. This book is a must have for any Brazilian family here in the USA.
A good insight into Brazilian Cooking.......1999-05-22
A good book that gives a good insight into the traditions of Brazilian cooking. A great introduction, recipes are adapted for the North American and European readers, each section has a little introduction, the book has a table of contents, index with Brazilian and English recipe titles. I have not tried any recipes at this stage but I cannot forsee any major difficulties in following the recipes.

I tend to choose from the books you can preview (the "see inside"). I don't think there was enough of a preview in this case, because I probably would not have purchased it. When I recieved this book yesterday, at first glance, I was not totally impressed. I am an intermediate beader and was looking for some new ideas/inspiration. However, there are a few patterns in this book that I will utilize. The author does some very simplistic designing here. She chooses very "safe" color choices. For a new beader with some very basic skills (basic 2 strand weaving, crimping, etc.)this book would probably be very useful. I have on one occasion used the bookstore to preview books and purchased "Bead Fantasies" from Amazon after doing so. I was not disappointed whatsoever!! This is a great book with many ideas using fabulous color choices. So lesson learned: go to the bookstore to preview beading books!! Then come back to Amazon & buy...

i didn't really like *any* of the projects. really, for me nothing spectacular or even wearable here.
i know that sounds harsh, but what i really mean to say is:
before buying this book you might want to find it in a bookstore and flip through it to see if there's anything in it you like. i bought it from amazon in good faith based on the reviews and wish i'd saved the money for more beads.

This book contains some great bead projects. it has lots of great up-close color pics and suggestions for variations of the projects. The only downfall is that the directions are not as detailed as I'd hoped for. Some of the projects are beginning level some are closer to a slightly more advanced level but all are fun to try and to use as building blocks for your own style and ideas.

This book has amazing ideas and designs that are easy to follow. I am a self taught beader with no "technical" skills. I was able to follow 90% of the patterns in this book no problem. I use all czech fire polish facteted beads, swarovski crystals, and japanese seed & bugle beads.

It describes anecdotal situations in a diary format and discusses how to handle them so that the relationship between parents and children are strengthened. The chapters are in an easy to read format that allows you to zero in on a situation that matches your own.
As a step-mother, this has been a very helpful guide to me when confronted with the negativity and unhappiness of my husband's ex-wife and how her manipulative behaviors effect the children and add stress to the transition between her home and ours. It helps me to be supportive of the children and of my husband at the same time.
The book is filled with wise insights, comfort, and good counsel. It has been a lifesavor through the journey as the children have grown older and established their own identities. While their parents have been divorced for 8 years and the children are now young teens, each stage has taken on a new nuance, and this book has helped my husband and me to maintain a sense of humor and connectedness as a family.

Children don't share our perspectives. Developmentally they have very different needs than the adults in their lives. Divorce can rock even the firmest foundation we have given them. This book gives parents the ablility to seek simple solutions from different perspectives. Answers that were easy, can get more complicated with divorce and it is refreshing to find solutions that use common sense, and place not winning or losing but succeeding as the goal, The authors, understand both children and parent needs, and the importance of building good relationships for all involved. I highly recommend this book, I have had opportunities to put the authors' guidelines to use and they work - for both parents and children, empowering all involved.

Just like your divorce, you probably won't like everything in this book, because no matter who you are, you can't help using the kids somehow to act out your own issues with your soon to be ex. This book really takes on the specific issues that effect children, so if you are serious about wanting to spare them long lasting problems as much as possible, read this book and pay attention to what it says.
