Book Description
Paul E. Perrone joined the United States Air Force to serve his country, but at the same time knew the benefits offered by the military were a bonus. After all, he could continue his education as well as gain valuable experience that would aid him when he re-joined the civilian world.
Even though an opportunity existed, he did not attempt to shirk his duty when the Gulf War erupted and his unit was deployed overseas to take part in Operation Desert Shield/Storm, putting his life on the line to ensure the success of the fight for freedom.
When he returned home and began to experience health concerns that were seemingly related to his stretch in the desert, he never imagined the benefits he would receive would require being stonewalled in every direction by policies of denial, cover-up, and outright harassment. He diligently attempted to force recognition and treatment of the medical issues he, and others, encountered as a direct result of their service.
A timely and ongoing story, "Toy Soldier" reveals new facets to the difficulties faced by many veterans when it comes time to claim their rightful dues.
This is a must read for anyone who was, is, or will be an American Soldier, and for those that care about them.
Customer Reviews:
A True "Eye-Opener" .......2006-02-02
Fully enjoyed the book! Very easy read and very informative. A True "eye-opener" as to how the government abandoned this soldier after he placed his life on the line for his country overseas, and how he had to fight to get the benefits that were owed to him, after he became ill. A must read for anyone that is a soldier or that is thinking of enlisting in the U.S. armed forces. Sgt. Perrone, I salute you!
Toy Soldier: Sergeant Perrone's Story.......2003-02-20
This book was recommended to me by a friend. When I received the book, I thought I would read a bit that night and then go to bed. I could not put it down!! It was written very well in a way that held my interest. I truly believe that it will be of interest to all veterans and their families not only in regards to what our soldiers deal with on a day to day basis when they are deployed to protect our county, but also in dealing with the boundless red tape involved in dealing with the bureaucracy of our military. Mr. Perrone did in no way denigrate our military, but he did show that in their attempt to not disclose information that should have been made available to each and every soldier, the powers that be are not always right! He gave facts and backup for every thing he wrote and persevered no matter what obstacles were put in his way. I believe he is honestly trying to help all the many thousands of veterans who have become ill and cannot explain the whys and wherefors of their illness. This book will give them the help they need to find the answers and the knowledge that you can "fight city hall" and win. My son is a career military man and I have just sent this book to him and also one to my brother who served in the Gulf at the same time as Sergeant Perrone.I highly recommend this book.
A Must Read for Veterans and Their Families.......2003-02-19
As the wife of a disabled veteran I found Sergeant Perrone's Story both comforting and informative. I truly wish my husband had a book like this available to him when he was struggling to obtain recognition from the Departemnt of Defense and the Veterans' Administration for his service connected disability. If you or someone you care about is a veteran or thinking of joining the military get and read this book. Sergeant Perrone makes it clear he loves his country and is proud to have had the opportunity to serve but he also makes it clear his top priority is supporting the troops when they return home and need care. He accompishes this in a roller coaster ride of humorous stories and heart breaking personal setbacks. Sergeant Perrone is both talented and quick witted. Well written! Great Job!

Book Description
Shaftesbury's Characteristicks of Men, Manners, Opinions, Times is a collection of treatises on interconnected themes in moral philosophy, aesthetics, literature, and politics. It was immensely influential on eighteenth-century British taste and manners, literature, and thought, and also on the Continental Enlightenment. The author was a Whig, a Stoic, and a theist, whose commitment to political liberty and civic virtue shaped all of his other concerns, from the role of the arts in a free state to the nature of the beautiful and the good. This is the first new edition of Shaftesbury's Characteristicks as a coherent collection for almost a century. A substantial Introduction discusses Shaftesbury's works and ideas in the context of his times, and traces the reception and influence of his writings through the eighteenth century and beyond. A full and scholarly commentary is provided, as well as a complete textual apparatus. The very thorough Index is Shaftesbury's own. The text is essentially that of the first edition of 1711, as marked up with changes by Shaftesbury himself in preparation for the posthumous second edition of 1714; and the striking emblematic engravings he commissioned especially for the second edition are incorporated.

Book Description
A native of Lucca and the chef–owner of Beppe, Cesare Casella is the real thing when it comes to Tuscan food. In True Tuscan, Casella offers authentic recipes and Beppe favorites, as well as history and legends, culinary and otherwise, of Italy's most adored region.
Tuscany has one of the richest cultural and culinary histories of all of Europe. From Catherine di Medici, who introduced the French to the fork and high heels, to Italian cowboys, this region boasts an intriguing and exciting heritage, and an equally thrilling cuisine. In True Tuscan, Casella presents the Tuscany he knows––the time–honored recipes of his ancestors spiced with historical facts and gossip. Casella is not afraid to update and improve, as his Beppe dishes make clear, but he is devoted to the Tuscan spirit, which he is uniquely qualified to celebrate and explore. These 125 tempting and satisfying recipes cover every course, from antipasti to dolci, and feature authentic flavors that promise to surprise and delight you and your guests.
Customer Reviews:
Delightful Take on Tuscan Cuisine. Buy It!!!.......2006-01-01
`true tuscan' by restauranteur / chef Cesare Casella is another attempt at capturing the cuisine of Tuscany with the same depth and interest shown in the many excellent treatments of Lazio (Rome), Liguria (Genoa and the Riviera), Emilia-Romagna (Bologna and Parma), and Friuli-Venezia Giulia (Trieste, San Daniele). Some of these regions such as Lazio have been the beneficiaries of several excellent treatments. For some reason, all the treatments of Tuscan cuisine in general have been too heavily oriented toward the travelogue or too self-serving to the business interests of the author. One notable exception is `The Tuscan Year' by Elizabeth Romer' which, however, is much more a personal memoir than a good survey of the region as a whole.
To be sure, good regional cookbooks come in at least three different flavors. Romer's work and Vincent Schiavelli's `Many Beautiful Things' (on Sicily) is the culinary memoir, Mario Batali's `Simple Italian Food' and Suzanne Dunaway's `Rome, At Home' are examples of personal interpretations of home cooking from a region, and Lynne Rosetto Kaspar's `The Splendid Table' and Fred Plotkin's `La Terra Fortunata' aim at giving us a fairly representative survey of a regions most distinctive dishes.
Cesare Casella's `true tuscan' falls somewhere between the personal treatment and the more scholarly study. But, the fact that it does not fit into an easy pigeonhole is definitely not a reason to consider it a poor book. It is, in fact, a very, very good book of Tuscan dishes. The means by which the author certifies this as a representation of Tuscan cuisine is by the simple fact that it is his cuisine, he is a professional chef, and he is Tuscan, at least originally. One thing this means is that there are more than a few dishes herein that originated in Liguria, Lazio, and points south. This is not really surprising since this book tends to confirm Fred Plotkin's statement in `La Terra Fortunata' that Tuscany is really in the middle of the pack among Italian regional cuisines, after Emilia-Romagna, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Campania, Liguria, and even Puglia. And, my respect for this book is based heavily on the fact that it is one of the very few Italian cookbooks, which exemplifies the poverty of the historical Italian cuisine. In fact, Tuscany boasts two major influences to interesting cuisine in that during the Renaissance, it had one of the most powerful noble houses in Italy, that being the Medici's of Florence. And, a noble court is one of the four underpinnings of great cuisine stipulated by Paula Wolfert.
This is one of the very few books which shows the importance of inexpensive ingredients such as beans, greens, stale bread, cheap fish, and organ meats in a lot of different dishes. One or more of these ingredients appear in virtually every recipe. At the same time, the book celebrates another hallmark of Italian cuisine, the celebratory dish, especially the now very famous timbale seen in Stanley Tucci's film, `Big Night'. This is specifically the `Pasticchio alla Fiorentina' with a pastry shell rather than a pasta or bread based shell. Like all the other `big' timbale recipes, this includes everything but the kitchen sink, with both a bechamel sauce and a meat ragu similar to ragu Bolognaise.
I really like the fact that Casella has organized his recipes by the five major traditional courses of an Italian meal. These are:
Antipasti, featuring several dishes which are a lot more complicated than the simple crostini. Tarts made with vegetables and organ meats plus dishes based on octopus, cuddlefish, and squid are heavily featured. There is even a recipe for an octopus salami. One of the most interesting I found is an oven fried calamari. It also includes a very Sicilian salad of shrimp, blood oranges, and fennel.
Primi Piatti (Soups, Pastas, and Risotto) with lots of soups based on cheap vegetables such as potatoes, onions, and leeks. True to the doctrine laid down by Mario Batali, the chicken stock is not your typical French production requiring many hours. It needs nothing more than some chicken legs, celery, carrots, onions, salt, and an hour to cook. I am also surprised to find three different gnocchi recipes. I am becoming more and more convinced that gnocchi is even more universal in the various Italian regions than either fresh or dried pasta, as everyone seems to have a recipe for it. Swiss Chard, the true Tuscan leafy green (not spinach) is the featured ingredient in one of the gnocchis. The most interesting recipe in this chapter is a technique for cooking pasta `al cartoccio' (in parchment).
Secondi (Seafood, Poultry, and Meats) which includes the original recipe for monkfish `osso buco' and a cowboy style `Tuscan Spareribs' (`Maremmana') which the author delights in clarifying by noting that there are, in fact, cowboys in Tuscany, in the district known as Maremma.
Contorni (Vegetables, Beans, and Other Side Dishes) , has the most typical Tuscan dishes containing either green leafy vegetables or beans, plus beets, potatoes, peas, and mushrooms.
Dolci (Desserts) is a rather small chapter, quite in keeping with the conventional wisdom that the Italians are not big sweet dessert eaters. And, one of the features in this chapter is the molten chocolate cake made famous by the very French Jean-Georges Vongerichten. But, even this short chapter has some treasures such as bean fritters `Fagioli Fritti', with a little plug for Casella's `Republic of Beans' business for importing dried Italian beans.
The book ends with a decent bibliography and list of sources, but you probably know everything there already if you have three or more good Italian cookbooks.
For a list price of less than $25, this book is a great find, and the very best book of recipes I have yet found based on the cuisine of Tuscany, even if the author colors outside the lines a bit. Historical Sidebars are also of very high quality for this inexpensive book!
Very highly recommended.

Best Gecko Manual for Juvenile Readers.......2005-05-26
This is a guide to gecko husbandry geared for children. Its large print makes it easy for youngsters to read. It is filled with interesting photographs. Best of all, it reads like a reptile husbandry lesson for elementary schoolers. It has a good introduction to geckoes in general with caveats on the more difficult to raise geckoes such as the Tokay (unusually aggressive for a gecko) and the Day (requires a tropical rain forest habitat). It then focuses on the most widely available and popular of geckoes, the Leopard Gecko. The book raises all of the key points to keeping a leopard gecko (proper diet, mineral supplements, daytime and nighttime temperature ranges, humidity and cleanliness) and discusses the consequences of failing to properly care for a gecko. The discussion is concise and easy to digest. This book isn't cluttered with arcane information and doesn't talk down to the child reader. It is the best child' gecko manual available.

Product Description
A how-to book of sewing for the complete novice, as well as the already-interested, featuring seven great projects and not one sewing machine. We've bound all the patterns (and eight colors of felt) right into the book, and filled the pouch in front with a basic sewing kit that includes fabric, thread, needles, pins, and a few other useful supplies. Each of the seven projects has been designed to tolerate big stitches and still rate high on the "look-what-I-made" scale of satisfaction. Written by the Editors of Klutz. For ages 8 and up.
Customer Reviews:
Great childs sewing kit.......2007-03-08
I bought this kit for my daughter who was turning 6. I found the projects fun and easy for us to carry out. Just about everything you need (I had to buy stuffing) is included.
it's ok.......2005-03-09
I bought this book for my son who wanted to learn to sew. While it has some great patterns and comes with most of what you need, the directions can be a bit confusing to a beginner and there is an overuse of felt.
The one project he has completed so far was the pull string purse. It is made from felt instead of regular material and was very difficult to sew. Also, the project used a straight stitch and this left holes in the purse around the seams when completed even though the directions were followed exactly. I will have to go back and sew that in myself.
The measurements for the amount of floss to use to create the pull strings are off by several inches. Fortunately I helped him with that part and could see right away that there was no way the small amount of thread they called for would work.
I think if they had used a different stitch and regular material, this project would have been much easier. Hopefully the other patterns will be easier to follow and complete.
Thank You Klutz!.......2004-05-07
A friend of mine had been pestering me to teach her how to sew. Since she had no experience at all, I suggested she pick up this Klutz book to get a basic understanding of sewing techniques. She laughed it off at first saying that this book is obviously aimed at children and that she'd need something for adults. (She hadn't yet experienced the world of Klutz!)
When I finally convinced her that this book is indeed what she needed, she picked it up and totally got into it. She made the drawstring pouch and then realized she could make a bigger one to use as a purse. And by enlarging the pattern for the scented satchel, she now makes wonderful bags to wrap gifts.
In fact, she's becoming quite a sewing whiz. Thank you Klutz for saving me from having to teach another friend the basics of sewing!
Obviously, I'm giving this book five stars. It is easy to understand, comes with the tools you need to get started and starts from square one. I'm convinced anyone can learn to sew by following the steps in this book.
great hands on project.......2001-09-02
I got this book as a Christmas gift a couple years back because I had been wanting to learn how to sew . This book was very fun, educational, and had simple instructions.. It come with just about everything you need to get started(needles,thread,cloth,ect.).The only thing you would need extra is scissors, a ruler, and other around-the-house supplies. The book includes 7 fun projects wich include a scented sachet, a needle book, a strawberry pin cushion, a dishtowel apron(you'll need an old towel for this one), drawstring pouch (i couldn't get this one to turn out right), a mouse, and a fat cat. Although this book was fun, I would suggest it to someone that is around the ages of 8-13(the book had sharp needles and some things that a smaller child wouldn't understand).
great for a rainy day.......2000-11-28
I bought this for my daughter because she wanted to learn to sew for her dolls, but I can't even sew a button. She is only six so I had to help her a lot, but it was a good learning experience for both of us. She made a pin cushion, needle holder and bag so far. She likes to stretch out the projects and so them on rainy, hang at home days.
Book Description
This book provides easy-to-follow instructions for creating stunning hanging baskets and wall baskets of all shapes, sizes and styles.

Each lesson builds upon the successes of previous lessons so that the child is challenged to use the "s" more often until he is able to use it in conversation. The book comes complete with worksheets, suggestions for games and fun exercises, and a certificate of achievement.
Customer Reviews:
Useful book.......2006-03-26
My 7-yr-old's lisp was pretty mild, and the pace of this was very easy for him, but he enjoyed having such easy success. And it is helping. It is certainly a lot easier and cheaper than going to a speech therapist regularly!
Excellent "do-it-yourself" manual for the motivated parent.......2004-03-10
My three and a half year old daughter had been doing private speech therapy (at $100 an hour) for her lisp for about one month before we moved to German-speaking Switzerland. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to find a native English speaking speech therapist in Switzerland, so I bought this book before we left the U.S. We have completed this book and it went very successfully. There are three important things to know however: (1) don't be deceived by the "15 lessons" title. There are 15 chapters, but each "lesson" is followed by 2 or 3 practice sessions. You can only do one lesson or practice session a day. Overall I think there are over 50 days of lessons/practice sessions. (2) You must be motivated to do this. The sessions are not difficult, but you must be consistent in actually doing them on a fairly regular basis. I failed miserably at this at first until I decided to do speech therapy with my daugher every day immediately after dinner. She couldn't get dessert until she had finished her speech therapy. (3) Even when you are done with the 50 or so sessions, your child's speech will not be perfect yet. After we were done with the book, my daughter could correctly make the "s" sound when reminded to do it, but she couldn't always remember to do it. You have to constantly remind your child to properly pronounce the "s" sound. The better you are about correcting your child's speech the faster he/she will progress.
Overall this book was a tremendous help to our child, and well worth the purchase price.
Light on Lateral Lisp.......1999-03-12
My interests are in what's called a 'Lateral Lisp', where the air escapes laterally (from the sides of the tongue rather than straight out the front) during the 'sh', 'ch', and 'zh' (like measure). So if you are looking at this book for use with the more traditional lisp, this review doesn't really apply to you.
The book contains an appendix that addresses the lateral lisp, but it only has about five pages of helpful information and instructions. And although this appendix suggests that the rest of the book is appropriate for a lateral lisp, the exercises there concentrate on the 's' sound, and not the 'sh' sound, which is the problem in the case of the lateral lisp.
Although ambiguous on the point, the appendix for lateral lisp seems to imply that a speech pathologist is required for this kind of speech problem. What I was looking for was a description of some techniques and hints that might be used to correct a lateral lisp. But there just wasn't enough in this book that focused on that topic to allow me to recommend this book for those with interests in the specific topic of a lateral lisp.

An adventurous book!.......2006-01-24
In the story Grass Sandals, there is a Japanese man named after a banana tree called basho. Basho loved nature so much that he wrote about it as a haiku poet. He lived in his small house in Edo surrounded by the morning glories in the 1600's. But one day, Basho decides he wants to travel because he is restless back at his home in Edo. Before his trip, Basho's friends give him supplies for his trip including grass sandals. On the trip he writes about what he sees, meets friends, and discovers different places in this adventurous book!
I enjoyed this book very much because I loved all the places he traveled and all the creative poems he wrote. I recommend this book for all afes. It is very well written!
I liked the pictures!.......2006-01-24
Grass Sandals is a great book about friendship and poems. The main character's name is Basho. Basho liked to have tea on his porch every morning under his basho tree. Basho lives in Edo. Basho likes to travel around his country. When Basho is traveling he gets many gifts from his friends. Basho is great for his blue grass sandals (from his friend) and for haikus. This story took place 300 years ago in Japan.
I really liked this book because of its illustrations and of how well it is written. I think that this book would be good for people who like books from other countries. I also think parents would enjoy this story too!
