Book Description
While Father is Away reveals the intimate story of a British-American's role in the American Civil War. William Bradbury's letters home provide a rare window on the unique relationships among husband, wife, and children while a father was away at war.
Yorkshire attorney turned Union volunteer soldier Bradbury became a "privileged private" with extraordinary access to powerful Union generals including Daniel Butterfield, future president Benjamin Harrison, and Clinton B. Fisk, the region's administrator for the Freedmen's Bureau during Reconstruction.
The letters also provide an in-depth look at this driven land speculator and manager for the Atchison Topeka Santa Fe Railway. As a reporter for the Chicago Tribune and the Manchester Guardian, Bradbury was both eyewitness to and participant in the shaping of events in the world as it moved west.

Don't have time to exercise? Don't belong to a gym? It doesn't matter. Now you can get a complete workout, anytime, anywhere, with the secrets of isometrics.
Millions of people can't seem to find the time to exercise. Now they can with The Complete Book of Isometrics. Fitness expert Erin O'Driscoll has compiled the best isometric exercises that can be done in the office, at home watching TV, flying in an airplane, or even driving a carno equipment required.
Rather than using expensive machines or lugging around a set of dumbbells, you use common objects and your own body's resistance to work out the muscles. Isometric exercises are especially helpful to people recovering from injuries that limit range of motion. A special chapter shows how even people with disabilities can use isometrics to build muscle tone and strength.
Using the secret of resistance, isometrics are the basis for yoga, Pilates, and all the core stabilization techniques that are so popular today. Now, learn the original, simple, and effective way to a complete workout without moving a muscle. 150 photos.
Customer Reviews:
Generalized definition of isometrics.......2007-04-06
The book introduces us to the concepts of the various types of muscle contractions very well and gives us a clear understanding of what "isometric" means.
There is advise given about exercise programs we are to start, and a section on warm-ups. The main part is the section illustrating and describing the isometric exercises. A chapter on stretches follows. The last section is for workout routines, which include isotonic exercises as well as isometrics.
While the isometric exercises are isometric by definition (muscles don't lengthen or shorten), I think many of these exercises miss one concept which the book itself introduced in page 2: that the contraction must be 67% of the muscle's maximal effort for gains in strength. Many just require us to get into a position which we are to hold (and it is only in tables at the end of the book that we get the hint that holds are from 3 to 8 seconds). And depending on how fit we are, such positions will use a lot less than 67% of our strength. Will we get much benefit if the isometric holds are way below 67% of muscle strength and held for a maximum of only 8 seconds?
Could this also be the reason why "advanced workouts" get us to repeat a series (termed superset) thrice, even if isometrics only require one repetition a day (again, from page 2 of the book)?
With all this, I get to wonder if isometrics applying less than 67% of our effort for less than 10 seconds could qualify as exercise.
The book is excellent for the information it provides, but it falls into the trap of including "complete" in its title. Most books with that word in their titles fail to fulfill that word. While it does show no-gadget moves, I did not see the basic press in front of the chest included in the list. This in spite of a variation of it being the picture in the front cover. Neither did I see the expected arm exercises of using the other arm as resistance for a bicep curl isometric, or a tricep extension isometric. It had equivalents using a desk and a wall, but using arm against arm is more applicable "anywhere, anytime." While it did show use of the wall, door, towel and ball, I would think that a "complete" book would at least comment on isometric gadgets like the Bullworker or Steel Bow which can almost be "anytime, anywhere." In particular, the Steel Bow can be an "anytime, anywhere" gadget.
I also noticed a few discrepancies between the pictures and their descriptions. The one in page 50 is obviously wrong.
Still, for all the info it provides, the clear pictures and exercise descriptions, I give it four stars.
Most of these aren't isometric!.......2006-08-27
I enjoyed the isometric exercises my physical therapist taught me to rehabilitate a shoulder I injured at the gym, and I was looking for a book that would have similar exercises for other parts of the body. Although some of the exercises in this book will be useful to me, most of them aren't actually isometric exercises (my PT agreed when I showed them to her), and a few I won't be doing because they put the body in precarious positions and I am prone to joint injuries. It's not a bad book, but it's not what I was looking for and I wouldn't have bought it if I'd looked through it at a bookstore.
Accurately researched and gracefully displayed .......2006-04-15
The book explains the differences between isometric, isotonic, and concentric exercises in fair and reasonable manner. It clearly demonstrates the benefits and drawbacks of isometric exercises such that the reader could apply what is beneficial and avoid the harmful effect of straining the circulatory system with longer stress of high blood pressure.
The book displays photographs for a man and a woman and clearly shows the graceful posture and extreme flexibility and fitness of the woman compared to a stiffed and inflexible man. The contrast of the hair style of the two also deserves notice.
The book's 184 pages are efficiently utilized to maximize the reader's understanding. After merely 27 pages of precise discussion of the subject of isometric contraction, the book turns illustrated with each page containing at least one or more photograph and relevant and clear text.

Excellent Book for All Athletes.......2006-02-27
Ms. O'Driscoll has created an excellent book on isometric training that can be used by both beginners or advanced trainees. The book provides an excellent introduction into the history of isometrics and their practical application.
She goes on to point out that the individual needs to decide what exercise method is best for their goals. If a person is interested in adding muscular "mass" or creating hypertrophy (muscular growth), isometrics may not be the best choice. However, for strength gains, research has shown isometrics can create the same reults as quickly as standard training with less safety issues.
For trainees who want to work out at home or travel, this would be an ideal book.
Strength coach Pavel Tsatouline recently documented the same research & findings in one of his publications based on Soviet research. So, you know Ms. O'Driscoll's book is on the money!

Light, Easy, and TASTY meals! A cookbook for food-lovers.......2007-01-06
This is one of my favorite healthy-eating cookbooks. There are big glossy color photos at least every other page, which are mouth-watering and inspiring. There are a wide variety of foods covered in this cookbook, from meat to fish, chicken, pork, pasta and grains, and EVERY recipe incorporates a fruit of veggie into your diet. I love fruits and vegetables already, but if you don't, this cookbook makes eating them easy.
Most of the recipes are pretty simple, with only 4 or 5 main ingredients, plus incidentals such as spices, olive oil, and other condiments, most of which I already had in the pantry. There is a chapter in the front of the book that helps you organize your pantry and fridge, grocery shopping shortcuts (such as what kinds of foods you can buy to cut down on kitchen prep time). The book is also divided by season so you can cook with readily available in-season ingredients, if you're a fan of shopping for fresh foods at farmer markets.
There is a fruit and vegetable purchasing guide in the back, alphabetized, which lists how many servings are in each pound, and how to prepare each fruit or veggie prior to cooking/using. There is a weights & yields guide for the most basic ingredients you will frequently use. For example, 1 pound of apples (about 3 medium-large) equals 3 cups sliced. If a recipe calls for 2 tablespoons limejuice, this table tells you that you only need to purchase 1 medium lime.
There is a well-stocked pantry guide; listing ingredients you should have on hand on a regular basis -- divided by pantry, fridge, and freezer.
I also enjoy how this cookbook is laid out. With each main dish recipe, they often pair a suggested side dish and dessert. I found the meal plans helpful, and they even have a task-plan laid out for you with each suggested meal to help maximize your time in the kitchen and be preparing 2 or 3 recipes at once.
All of the recipes I have tried were simple, easy to make, and very tasty. I don't feel like I'm dieting when I use this cookbook, yet I know I'm eating healthy and paired with my exercise plan, I've been steadily losing weight.
Some of my favorite recipes...
* Shrimp Del Sol (page 34) made with zesty diced tomatoes and peppers, limejuice, cumin, and angel hair pasta.
* Asian Citrus Chicken Salad (page 44) - marinated grilled chicken breast on a bed of greens with orange slices and red bell pepper, served with sesame breadsticks.
* Spicy Chicken Pasole (page 47) - A spice corn and chicken stew with baked tortilla chips
* Cajun Catfish with Grilled Veggies (page 62)
* Grilled Beef Fajita Salad (page 86)
* Frozen Yogurt with Raspberry Sauce (page 86)
* Coffee Smoothie (page 108)
* Turkey Soft Tacos (pave 140)

Beginning knitters: graduation day has come! Two designers from the highly regarded Trendsetter Yarn Company have created a collection of projects that will painlessly take novices to the next level.
What's a newly avid knitter to do when she's mastered the scarf and wants to go beyond? Too many books just repeat the same group of basics, while others set the goal too high for anyone who's not a whiz with the needles. Innovative Knitovation solves the problem, showing just how easy it can be to create something sensational while gaining proficiency at the same time. These are high-end, sophisticated fashions, with slightly more advanced skills--but all you need to know to begin is how to knit a simple square, rectangle, or triangle. At the start of each design, drawings show every piece that goes into the final product; then, there are unique techniques for putting them together for a finished item that fits beautifully and looks great.
Customer Reviews:
KNITOVATION BOOK.......2007-10-03
THIS A WONDERFUL BOOK ------------ INOVATIVE AND YET, EVERY DESIGN IS TOTALLY WEARABLE IN EVERY CLIMATE.
Outstanding stuff from squares and rectangles.......2007-09-27
This is an absolutely great book for anyone, but a real motivation for beginners. Everything in the book is "shaped" from squares and rectangles. If you can knit, purl, cast on and bind off, you have it covered. The looks are extremely new and fresh looking, and great for all body shapes.
Knitting I can do..........2007-07-30
I have only knitted scarves and lots of them. I wanted to try something else. So, I saw this book in a store and decided to get it at Amazon about a week later. I find that it really is easy to just make rectangles and piece them together and have a sweater! Even I can do that! And beware you will need to know some stitches besides the garder. It's a whole new way of looking at knitting.
Awful.......2006-12-31
This is the worst knitting book I have bought to date. Most of the patterns are truly horrible looking. If you like to stick out like a sore thumb, or you like to have people laughing at you behind your back, then you may like these patterns.
A new classic.......2006-09-20
This book is exactly what it says it is. It offers fashionable and fun designs for the knitter who loves to just knit and does not want to deal with a lot of shaping, counting, and finishing.
The designs are not form-fitting, but they are quite flattering for many figures. I consider this a collection of very basic patterns that can easily be adapted to an almost endless variety of yarns. Since the pieces are all rectangular or triangular, it is very easy to substitute yarns of different gauges. I made the design on the cover out of a totally different kind of yarn and everyone loves it.
Since Barry Klein is the owner of Trendsetter and frequently collaborates with the owner of Prism, the yarns used are all from Trendsetter and Prism, which are expensive. The designs, however, stand on their own without the specific yarns used.

Radical Healing: Integrating the World's Great Therapeutic Traditions to Create a New Transformative Medicine--the title sounds like an impossible undertaking. Yet Ballentine, an American physician and psychiatrist trained in many of the world's healing traditions, succeeds. He introduces the principles of holistic healing and presents an integrated system combining the awareness, tools, and practices taught by a variety of healing disciplines, including Ayurveda, homeopathy, and herbal medicine. Ballentine explains the principles of "nature's medicinals," based on the herbal traditions of China, India (Ayurvedic), Europe, and Native America. He presents several self-assessment techniques, including body maps and mind/body types. He describes the use of exercise, nutrition and cleansing (detoxification), and holistic techniques for working with energy and consciousness. Extensive resources for integrating holistic healing approaches into your daily life let you continue after the book ends. Radical Healing is not a quick fix--it's intelligent, philosophical, and detailed, best for those who are interested in learning about different schools of holistic healing approaches, open to new insights and skills, and willing to devote time to learning to use them. --Joan Price
Book Description
This extraordinary book offers nothing less than a new vision of medical care. Rudolph Ballentine, M.D., has created a unique, integrative blending of the primary holistic schools of healing that is far more potent than any one of these alone.
Like Deepak Chopra and Andrew Weil, Rudolph Ballentine is a medical doctor who became intrigued by the workings of mind-body medicine and looked beyond the West in his search for understanding. Drawing on thirty years of medical study and practice, Dr. Ballentine has accomplished a singular feat: integrating the wisdom of the great traditional healing systems--especially Ayurveda, homeopathy, Traditional Chinese Medicine, European and Native American herbology, nutrition, psychotherapy, and bodywork. Melded together, the profound principles buried in these systems become clearer and stronger, and a new level of effectiveness becomes possible. Healing and reorganization are accelerated and deepened--physically, emotionally, and spiritually. The result is transformation. The result is radical healing.
Radical Healing harnesses nature's medicinals--plants and other natural substances--with commonsense essentials such as diet, exercise, and cleansing, as well as the most profound principles of spiritual and psychological transformation. In Dr. Ballentine's synthesis, illness is an opportunity for growth that can go far beyond recovery. Through radical healing old habits and attitudes that supported the development of disease fall away, to be replaced by the clarity that comes with a whole new way of being in the world.
Customer Reviews:
a great doctor.......2004-12-26
there are few books which i can recommend more than this one.
[only recommended for those who already are a bit in the field of "alternative medicine"]
diet and nutrition [from the same author]was an eye-opener for me- many ,many years ago -and i still highly recommend this book -as a first choice -for anybody interesting in nutrition [to start with]
i am speaking as a physician.
Not to miss...!.......2002-12-08
This book is written in a lively fashion. The author is intelligent, thourough and the text is approachable and flowing.
Unlike other self-help guides this book does not "preach" or ground itself in mysterious conventions without explanation. EVerything makes sense- if you're open to some adjustments- and it's a great book not only to heal certain diseases, but also to provide tools to customize your diet, habits and excercise so they would suit your type, helping you to feel better and healthier.
Not to be missed !
A holistic approach to holistic medicine.......2002-04-30
It's fair in that it accomplishes what the title indicates - it does indeed integrate "the World's Great Therapeutic Traditions" - but it fails to adequately incorporate the world's greatest therapeutic tradition - traditional modern medicine.
Not all causes of illness arise in the mind. Case in point: using the book, since I have a sore throat now, I looked up "sore throat" and did the recommended "Lion" yoga exercise - I also even tried a little bit of the "cold wet cloth around neck". The "Lion" actually caused my throat to dry out, which actually aggravated the situation. The cold wet cloth didn't feel right so I stopped. Also, the stated possible cause of "Holding in anger, not expressing yourself" really didn't seem to fit the bill - I was too tired to feel like expressing anger, even in the "Lion" pose. (As a certified yoga instructor, I would have thought that something that massages the throat, such as the Cobra, would have made more sense.)
My point is that not all causes of illness arise in the mind. Certainly some do, and even those that don't might have an effect on the mind, but I think it's just plain impractical to believe that illness is all about attitude. If you do believe that, you wind up thinking (as religious types sometimes do) that everything bad that happens to you happens because of something you did wrong or believed wrong. That isn't the case. Bad stuff happens to even the best of us. Don't always be blaming yourself for your illnesses, and don't always think you've got to change your life around just because you sneezed. (I'm exaggerating to get my point across.)
So far, it hasn't become a "New Transformative Medicine" for me, but maybe it will grow on me. In the meantime, I'll only seek "alternative" health care when "traditional modern" health care doesn't cut it for me.
Other than that, the book is great - it's well written, has interested anecdotes, is easy to read, is structured in an easy to use and intuitive manner, and has more than adequate illustrations to emphasize important points. This is the first book on holistic medicine I've ever read, and I'm glad it is, because it helps me see the "big picture" of the field of holistic medicine.
So as a book I'd give it 5 stars, but I'm taking off one star for the nature of the content and another star for the failure to truly integrate "traditional modern" health care.
A must read for those seeking common sense in health.......2001-09-13
The author uses his large range of experiences over 25 years and his very lucid writing style to detail the workings of herbal medicines, homoeopathic remedies & flower essences. I recommend these chapters to any lay person wishing to get an introduction to these areas. He deals with self diagnosis and detoxing, nutrition and diet, finally addressing health in terms of energy, which I find very thought proviking
Radical Says it Mildly.......2001-04-23
Ballentine brings synthesis to integrating the historic healing systems of the world. I am an alternative practitioner specializing in bodywork and the mind-soul connection. He says plainly what I have struggled for years to explain to my clients who truely seek wholistic healing. It's all in there and it's definitely all connected. This writing allows the reader to extract information and gain understanding in an applicable manner. I refer to it often and always discover something new and timely to aide me and my clients.
