Book Description

Vietnam-Sergeant Myers emerges from the gloomy, smoke-filled jungle, armed with a M-16, ready to defend a code of honor that only men in battle, only true warriors, can fathom. With a mission to eliminate the enemy, he also thinks about the survival of his men. He believes his cause is just to fight for the freedom of his Vietnamese allies. Yet, he and his comrades are seduced by the savage mentality of combat. It is a daily life-or-death proposition, one that seeps into the darkest corners of a Marine's soul and penetrates the very core of his being, saturating the mind, body, and spirit of man.

Donald F. Myers' "Your War,My War- A Marine in Vietnam" transports its readers into the ever present chaos and hysteria of active combat in the Vietnam War. His chronicle begins October 30,1967, Gio Linh, and spans sixteen months, following him through the drudgeries of military life. Each chapter represents a day's journal entry, juxtaposed with American newspapers that coincide with the entries, allowing the reader to envision the contrast of the American political and journalistic structure versus a day at battle, the reality of Vietnam.

"Your War, My War" is the "Red Badge of Courage of the Vietnam War," says MGySgt Peter deConnick, USMC Ret. Fellow veteran, HM1 Ed "Doc" Thompson, USN Ret. FMF Corpsman Vietnam, proclaims it "a brilliantly constructed evocative memoir that vividly describes the horror, fear, frustration, and anguish we went through." "Your War, My War" provides a compelling and realistic account of how one strong-willed soldier survived the most controversial war in American History.

This book should be required reading for all marines and other U.S. military, including officiers. This soldier writes with his gut and what he says is true. He lived it.I am suprised noone has the guts to put this book on film, instead of the milk toast the movies put out. You do not have to be military to respect the man and believe in our country as he does.

5 out of 5 stars Nam is not for the Faint Hearted........2000-10-24

Weak kneed, left wing, doves should avoid the reality of the portrayal of the life of Myers and the Marine comrads he so eloquently shares with the reader. This is not a sugar coated documentary of all that is right with our military strategy on the ground , in day-to-day life of combat Marines, but the true story of how these Marines prevailed in spite of the strategy. Anyone who ever hold a position of leadership where conditions are extremely difficult must read this book. Only a few books ever capture the reality of war, this is one of them. A must read.

This book took me back to c/1/12, to the very places I had been, I did't know SSgt Meyers, but I think I was there while he was. Super book, thanks for putting our Battery story in print.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding contribution to Vietnam War studies........2000-07-04

In Your War, My War: A Marine In Vietnam, Sergeant Donald Myers shows us the chaos and hysteria that was the hallmark of active combat in the Vietnam War. His memoir begins on October 30, 1967 when he arrives at Gio Linh and spans sixteen months of lethal combat and mind-numbing drudgeries of military life in a combat zone. What makes Your War, My War unique and distinctive from other Vietnam biographies is that each chapter represents a day's journal entry, juxtaposed with American newspapers that coincide with the entries, enabling the reader to envision the contrast of the American political and journalistic structure versus a day at battle. This contrast of the reality of Vietnam with the Never-Never Land perceptions back home is particularly jarring and informative. Your War, My War is a highly recommended and much appreciated contribution to the growing body of literature on the American military experience in Vietnam.

Book Description

Honest, enlightening and entertaining, this is the story of Ted Honderich. In the thick of it all as Grote Professor of Mind and Logic at University College London, Ted Honderich reveals the world of working philosophy and the real life of philosophers as never seen before.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Self-centered but honest.......2005-01-10

This is the self-biography of a narcisist but conscious and honest person, who as such must be prized. It is informative, reflexive, sensitive and very well-written, with some liric pages, as in the description of his trip to Irland, where he met his second wife. About his academic and judicial strugles, one can only regret the smallness of this kind of life. And about his sexual adventures with students, I suspect this was harmless for all, except for him. I've learned something by reading this book and I recomend.

2 out of 5 stars Not the kind of life anyone should be proud of........2002-12-03

While Honerich's book contains some interesting insights into the characters of the philosophers with whom he has come into contact, I find his constant bragging about how many undergraduates he has slept with rather off-putting. Far from being a confession of his exploitative behaviour, Honderich revels in his own skill at avoiding official censure for his actions at several universities (it is not difficult to see why he got on so famously with the late A. J. Ayer). Honderich has a reputation for being an intimidating opponent in debate, not because his arguments are particularly powerful but, because he bullys his adversaries into submission. He clearly carries this trait into his private life. The book does not leave one with much admiration for its author, in spite of his achievements in climbing the academic hierarchy. What I find in this book is yet another example of a misogynistic lecturer smugly reminiscing about how he got away with exploiting young women over whom he held academic power. This book is not particularly badly written but is not a heartening read.

4 out of 5 stars How free should Ted have been?.......2002-11-16

I have read all of Philosopher: A Kind of Life, and have some away with mixed feelings, and a mixed evaluation. I think that the book does represent a life in all its messiness and tensions, something which may not appeal to analytic minds less worldly (or sensual, or interesting) than Honderich is. On the other hand, my general picture of the man himself is one of a man who has the virtue of honesty in spades, but this has left him short of some of the other virtues. His vanity, roving eye for the women, and academic ambitiousness left me cringing throughout the book, and I do not consider myself a moralizer. Above all, he is continuously rationalizing his behavior, and hoping that you take his side because 'at least he is being honest about it.' To potential readers I would say: a compelling read, though you will find yourself in a relationship with Ted, and you might find this unhealthy.

2 out of 5 stars Ponderous: a kind of writing.......2001-08-02

Being a fan of the philosophy Honderich does, I admit to being dissapointed at the sort of re-telling his life has recieved. The clarity and knowledge that exist in his professional work are translated here...to the most tedious degree. One senses a Continental cloud descending as one attempts to remember the last page read. He was dating who? His colleague said what? The nerve...and the boredom. After reading the life of Ayer retold by another, I wonder if Ted should have waited for posthumous recollection. He seems to be leading the same life as his mentor, minus the dash. Proceed immediately to the last chapter and philosophical summary to retain your interest.

Honderich maintains an excellent web site, devoted to issues of determinism and the ravaging of his critics. I suggest you visit there instead of these pages...it's free.

4 out of 5 stars The "Publisher's Weekly" review of this book is mistaken.......2001-01-23

I'll admit up front that I haven't read all of Honerich's memoir. But of the excerpts I've read, it has already become clear to me how misleading and shallow the "Publisher's Weekly" review (posted above) of this book is.

You might expect Honderich to discuss his life in a respectable and proud way. Not so. He is completely frank and detached from his own past behaviors--as he says, it is a kind of confession. Although more of the book is in passive voice, this does not make it less exciting. Quite the contrary.

Who else would, for no apparent reason other than that he thinks everything must be told, describe his one encounter with a prostitute, or his numerous relationships with women? Honderich also does a good job of describing how he beacame a philosopher, and the kind of life he leads as a professor of philosophy in the zany world of academia.

This book is not the usual kind of autobiography; it's much more than that, and it's a shame that "Publisher's Weekly" didn't take the time to realize this.

Asthma kills 6,000 people a year. Respiratory illnesses affect millions more. According to Teresa Hale, asthmatics and others with respiratory illnesses are breathing wrong. "We have been led to believe that deep breathing is good for us because it increases our oxygen intake. In fact, the reverse is true. The more we breathe, the less oxygen actually reaches the cells of our bodies," says Hale in Breathing Free: The Revolutionary 5-Day Program to Heal Asthma, Emphysema, Bronchitis, and Other Respiratory Ailments. Her breathing program, Breath Connection, teaches you to change your breathing patterns so that you won't need to wheeze, breathe heavily, or take gulps of air after exertion. Hale promises that five days on this program will reduce your need for medications, and regular practice often increases metabolism and leads to weight loss.

Breathing Free gives a self-test to assess your breathing and teaches several techniques to improve it. Hale explains how to adapt the program for mild, moderate, or severe asthma; emphysema; bronchitis; panic attacks; general health; and children with asthma. She also suggests dietary guidelines.

Hale's program is based on the work of Konstantin Buteyko of the former Soviet Union. It is easy to understand, but will take time and effort to master. But Hale says you have a choice: "Stay where you are, with your daydreams and your deteriorating health, or take control and make some effort to effect permanent change." Hale founded Britain's renowned Hale Clinic, whose clients have included Princess Diana, the Duchess of York, Tina Turner, Richard Gere, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. --Joan Price

Book Description

MAKE THE BREATH CONNECTION -- AND SAVE YOUR OWN LIFE

Are you one of the hundreds of thousands of Americans who suffer from asthma, emphysema, bronchitis, or other respiratory ailments? Far too often, people with these illnesses are prescribed medications that only mask symptoms, instead of really treating the underlying condition. If you are among this group, it's time for you to escape this prison and start Breathing Free.

Teresa Hale, founder of the world-renowned Hale Clinic, has created a groundbreaking treatment that can dramatically change the lives of anyone who feels the crippling affect these illnesses can have on their daily lives, in as little as five days. Called the Breath Connection, this revolutionary program is based on more than forty-five years of empirical research, as well as the Buteyko method, which focuses on dysfunctional breathing, or overbreathing, as the cause of more than 200 respiratory diseases.

Breathing Free is complete with line drawings and clear instructions on how to use these simple methods to reestablish normal breathing patterns to prevent and overcome attacks, restore healthy and restful sleep, and reduce the need for medication by up to 60 percent. For the many people who have lived with the struggle of breathing problems, Breathing Free provides hope for relief, better health, and a better life.

3 out of 5 stars GOOD INFO, BUT A BIT VAGUE.......2007-03-23

Well, how do I begin? First, I must say that I approached this book a bit cautiously optimistic based on the mixed reviews I read here. I had really wanted to get Close Your Mouth, by Patrick McKeown but I didn't want to wait. Luckily I found a local bookstore that had Breathing Free so I bought it right away. I must point out, I do not have asthma, but I know I'm a chronic hyperventilator that's been extrememly problematic this past year.

After I read it, I found the poor reviews were really based on somewhat poor comprehension of the material, although my biggest gripe is that the book IS a bit vague as some of the reviewers pointed out (Good thing I went ahead and ordered Close Your Mouth).

Does this method (Buteyko)work? I'm not sure yet, as it's only been 3 or 4 days. But I feel more controlled over my overbreathing, and I'm more conscious of it. I've already seen an improvement over how many breaths a minute I take, but not really in my controlled pause. I'm not sure if it's going to prove to be a panacea for me, but the stress levels I've been experiencing are becoming more manageable.

Conclusion: At this point, this book has been helpful, but based on other reviews I think there may be better books on the topic. Read this as an introduction, but be prepared to invest in other books.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant! - all asthma sufferers must try this out........2007-01-16

The idea presented in this book is so simple and radical, I read with severe skepticism. But I made an agreement with myself to give the 5-day program a try anyway. Well, it works! You truly get results in 5 days - but you have to commit to it. It's worth it. It hasn't cured my condition, but it has had a significant impact. I'm confident that if I continue to practice the breathing technique, and follow the other recommendations in the book about dietary adjustments, drinking habits, etc, the effects will continue.

1 out of 5 stars dangerous book.......2006-10-24

i bought this book for a man with emphysema . the only good advice is to breathe through the nose. a technique taught in other medical info for pulmonary patients after they have calmed down from losing thier breath. Pulmonary rehab teaches deep breathing and other lung excersises , in every study and there are numerous, patients have improved breathing dramaticlly . so deep breathing is not a bad thing as this book would have one think , and anyone who has any education knows that plants and trees do not use oxygen they create it . the book is very redundant in speaking of the hale clinic . it critisizes medicines that are effective though have harsh side effects in helping with breath for those whom are severely ill but leaves nothing to replace them , other then breathe through the nose. however if the medicines are removed the person in all likely hood would not be able to breathe at all . it truly is not a helpful book , and when trying to go to the website , one came up with nothing but ads that the hale clinic probably gets paid to have on the so called site . or what i call a non existant site.with no contact info , it is wrong to give people a false sense of hope while giving them misinformation that benefits the seller of the information .it gives a false quick solution that does not work to those who are seeking desperately to find something , anything . and is dangerous to that person if they quit medicines tht help them breathe based on the misinformation in this book .

1 out of 5 stars In total agreement with asthmatics review.......2006-03-02

The Buteyko method is a superb therapy for asthma. Teresa Hales book touches on it but does not contain it. There are many books available which are worthy of reading especially if you have asthma, fatigue and other complaints. For example- do a search for Asthma Free naturally, Every Breath you take, The Buteyko Manual or a very simple read with all exercises called Close Your Mouth.

Good luck and healthy breathing

2 out of 5 stars Fair Introduction, but reads like a sales pamphlet.......2006-02-23

This book is a skimpy introduction to the Buteyko method, which seems to work. While the Buteyko method is very good, this book is deliberately vague about the details of the actual exercises. Hale spends chapter after chapter describing all the illnesses that the Breath Connection method will cure, but leaves many key questions about the method unanswered. Why do you take your pulse? How exactly do you breath shallowly? Do you use your diaphragm? Do you count? If not, how are you sure that you are doing it right?

Hale is plainly drumming up business for her clinic, so if there are more complete books on Buteyko elsewhere, I would strongly recommend going there.

5 out of 5 stars Mad Coyote Joe Knows Good Food!.......2007-01-20

Every recipe I have made from this book has never ceased to amaze me and those I serve it to for unique and amazing flavor. The ensalada de orzo diablo is amazing - I make it often and it is received with enthusiasm and even those unsure who may take a little at first (even if to be polite) come back for a big second serving. Don't forget to try the chinese asparagus salad, it's so good!

I collect cookbooks, and many I have never used, or barely used; this book however is well loved, is used frequently, and has the splatter marks to prove it!

5 out of 5 stars I know Joe!.......2003-04-21

I live in arizona and make sure to watch the "sonoran grill" on tv everyday. Sorry to those of you outside the arizona area. I dont believe they broadcast anywhere else. Mad coyote joe lives in cavecreek arizona with his wife and children and hosts this great cooking show from his own backyard while throwing scraps at his yellow lab. He is the top authority on everything sonoran. This book is full of his best recipes for fresh, hommade salsa.BBQ rubs and anything else grilled. If you like the flavor of the southwest you'll love this book even if you dont know the show!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent recipes.......2002-04-05

I have tried most of the recipes in this book, and have repeated many of them over and over again. I have not tried one yet that was not a big hit with the family and friends, all of which are southwestern cuisine fans. The instructions are vague, but I was curiously complimented that Mad Coyote thought I already knew the basics. The flavors from each of the recipes (ie: Black Bean/White Corn Salad and Gazpacho Soup) are outstanding. A great way to impress any dinner party guest.

5 out of 5 stars A nice little airport pickup.......2000-09-07

I had some time to kill while waiting for a flight to take off from Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix. I started looking at some cookbooks, and this offering from Mad Coyote Joe was displayed prominently. Once you flip through this book, it's as good as bought!

MCJ is upfront about his background - he's not a trained cook, but he loves the food he makes, knows it backwards and forwards, and has a passion for letting others know about how to make the stuff he loves. Most importantly, the language he uses is clear and concise and is therefore accessible to all levels of readers, including those like me who have to ask our spouses where they keep the butter.

The recipe for Joe's 'Two-Chile Salsa' is alone worth the price of admission. This is the type of dish you bring to a gathering and as the guests gorge themselves you're bound to get an incredulous "*you* made this?"-type of reaction.

5 out of 5 stars Now anyone can become a grilling expert!.......2000-09-05

Mad Coyote Joe hosts "The Sonoran Grill", a popular television cooking show and in this superb regional cookbook showcases 130 of his favorite recipes featuring a Southwestern touch. From Posole (a classic American Indian soup), to Chile Rellenos (a delicious Mexican dish), to Habanero-Lime Butter (perfect for vegetables, potatoes, grilled fish and pork), to Sonoran Mesquite-Smoked Brisket (a true Sonoran dish with a twist!), The Sonoran Grill offers the best of the Southwest suited for transforming even the most novice kitchen cook into a skilled grilling expert!

              5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!.......2001-03-31

This book takes a common sense approach to organizing a playgroup. Helpful tips and suggestions cover how to find other moms to join, how to handle common (and not so common) problems, how to set up rules, etc. I've used it to start a playgroup in my neighborhood, and I'm so glad I did! I was very anxious about starting a playgroup, but this book has given me confidence and has been so helpful in the whole process. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A book for every mom.......2001-02-22

I recently read this book and was amazed at all the useful information I found! This book is full of ideas for getting a playgroup off the ground. It covers everything from getting started to entertainment ideas. It has a whole chapter devoted to how to handle problems that might arise. I am a working mom of a 10 yo and 6 yo, but still found some great ideas for children's church and nursery. I am also going to use some of these ideas for summer while the kids are home and wanting playdates.

              Book Description

William Blake's wife once said of him: "I have very little of Mr. Blake's company; he is always in Paradise." This fascinating and generously illustrated biography of the great English artist, poet, and mystic brings us very much into Blake's company, presenting, often in the words of his contemporaries, almost everything that is known of his life and times.

G.E. Bentley, Jr., tells us that although Blake struggled with the ways of the world in his youth and early manhood, he was always frustrated that these ways were not his own. Instead he spoke the language of radical religious dissent, standing outside the popular political and social conventions of his time and lamenting the power of Church and State. Blake learned to participate in traditions of vision and piety, to exult in the power of the spirit and in visionary art and literature. He created a new gospel of art, other-worldly and fundamentally spiritual, and in his old age, he exhibited a serenity in poverty and a devotion to the realm of the spirit that was revered by his disciples. Blake's life bears the shape of great art itself, says Bentley. From his youthful vaulting ambitions in painting, engraving, poetry, and music, through his mature flirtation with fortune, to his joyful return to the vision and confidence of his youth, Blake's life provides a pattern of noble self-sacrifice and wise self-understanding that is an inspiration to his generation and to ours.

              5 out of 5 stars Body Electric.......2007-08-05

This is a very good, straight-forward biography of a mysterious man. Anyone curious about Blake should read it. People who love Blake will still love him, their love enhanced by the very clear context given to the events of his life. Of the visions that are of course the oddest thing about Blake, at least to the vast majority of us who don't have them, the author is neutral. You can't really know. I'm personally for rather than against visionaries even if they are delusional, just because this is indeed the age of fiberglass. Someone said of Blake that he was cracked, but the Light came through the crack. I like to believe he was visited by Milton, Michaelangelo and William Wallace, etc., and that he saw trees full of angels. At the same time, there is a question about the nature of inspiration. Once established, Blake's style in poetry and painting never changed much, only the subjects changed: so the various spirits did nothing in the way of altering his method, nor did they alter his views much, though he seems to have mellowed somewhat. He seems to have been a channel for one Spirit who changed form. There are other artists who seem to me to have represented the world beyond in a more profound way: Bach, Milton, Michaelangelo, Wordsworth for example. And of course, Shakespeare seems to have had a 100 people's combined understanding of how life is. And there are artists, more like us, who seemed to have developed as life progressed.

Still, he was one of the men who lived for and frequently in the electric blessing that changes everything, that power, gift, the angels, like Cupid, seem to bestow as they choose. Blake was a vehicle.

He was the great Outsider artist. He was a Hero of poor England. Thank God for Blake who said, "I live in a hole here, but God has a beautiful mansion for me elsewhere." He was authentic, poor and a real man. Everyone should know how he died singing Hallelujahs and hymns of praise.

5 out of 5 stars Why Blake Matters.......2004-06-10

This biography concentrates too much on Blake's occupation as an engraver and glosses over his reputation as a poet and visionary. Such a bluntly factual, objective account of Blake seems out of keeping with his spiritual enthusiasm and disdain for the factual (i.e. the physical world). But this book did help me develop an appreciation for Blake. The "Songs of Innocence and of Experience" did not impress me because they seemed to be the epitome of maudlin Christian sentimentality. However, Bentley's biography makes it clear that Blake was not a conventional Christian. I was impressed by the importance Blake placed on the imagination, creativity, and the arts as the true expressions of spirituality and the sublime. I also admire Blake's spirited defense of imagination and the Poetic Genius.

If Blake were alive today I think he would rant against the scholars rather than Empire. The scholars have laid claim to the poet's place in society and the only empire that exists today is the academic empire. Just look at the way a college campus expands and swallows up all the property around itself! It is the scholars who attack men of inspiration and genius because they need to promote poetry as something that can be taught and explicated.

Blake does seem mad when he talks about speaking with angels and spirits but he probably did possess the faculty of a visionary imagination which caused him to express such reverence for the world of imagination, even to the extent of preferring it to the natural world. It reminds me of a quote from Rimbaud, "I came to find my mind's disorder sacred".

              5 out of 5 stars Bentley's Generous Act.......2001-06-25

The scholarship that works through this book is obviously one of love and devotion of many many years. Bentley's sorting out of events in Blake's life is amazingly well researched - it is the first Blake biography that does not have that usual blur of focus that leaves one more mystified than enlightened. Blake's contemporaries, friends, enemies, patrons, etc. are all given voice through their own extant letters, articles . . - this contextualizes him beautifully and clears the field of critical debris that has grown out over the centuries. In fact, it is Bentley's sober critical eye (of fairness) which is so refreshing - his sense of balance is impeccable. Only a lifetime lover of Blake could hit so consistently true tones. But if you're arriving to this book looking for critical scholarship of the work and myth than you're walking through the wrong door. This book is not about the minutae of the work (see Northrop Frye for that) - it assumes already that one is also a lover and "understander" of the work. This book is about the man - written and informed, of course, by the man's work, but is a book about Blake's life - not a treatise on Urthona. Yes, I recommend this book. Walk on in and stroll around.

                          Book Description

This wide-ranging study, by one of the UK's leading scholars of British politics, presents a fascinating picture of the role of the MP during the last 150 years. The author examines the various roles of Members of Parliament since the middle of last century. Backbench MPs have three major roles-a partisan role, a constituency role, and a scrutiny role. They increasingly expect and are expected to support their parties; to help constituents with individual problems and look after their collective interests; and they are expected to keep a check on the government and its policies. These roles existed 150 years ago, but the balance between them has changed. The partisan role now dominates at Westminster, the constituency role has expanded beyond all recognition, and the scrutiny role is widely seen as the poor relation. Moreover, while constituency work has been virtually hived-off as a non-partisan role, the conflict between the partisan and the scrutiny role creates a dilemma at the heart of parliamentary government.
