Russia's War: A History of the Soviet Effort: 1941-1945
ASIN: 0297846086 |
Book Description
Outspoken men did not normally last long in Stalin's Russia. Marshal Zhukov was an exception, although he came very close to sharing the fate of many Red Army officers who offended Stalin. One of the few generals to survive Stalin's purges, he beat the Japanese in a border battle on the Mongolian frontier on the eve of the war, then saved the day in 1941 when the German invasion was only halted at the gates of Moscow. From there to Stalingrad and to the ultimate battle for Berlin, Zhukov was the Soviet Union's leading commander.

Needs a good editor.......2005-07-12
Picked this book up thinking it would be a sort of refresher on the Eastern Front. Unfortunately the writing is rather poor, leaving this reviewer utterly confused as to what the late Mr. Colvin was trying to say. The maps are also terribly inadequate with many of the place names mentioned in the text no where to be seen. With all due respect to the author(who died shortly after finishing this work and which may account for its many shortcomings), if studying the Russo-German War is a pastime of yours, you would be better off looking elsewhere.
crucial role of Zhukov in Russia military.......2005-07-06
The biography gives a full picture of the military career of Zhukov, Russian's greatest general who led the Soviet forces defeating the German Army at Stalingrad. But Zhukov's claim to historical importance goes beyond this. He played a key role in defeating the Japanese in their invasion of Manchuria, which freed Russian forces for the later encounter with the Germans along the whole border of eastern Russia. Zhukov prevented the Germans from taking Leningrad and Moscow before turning them back with victory at Stalingrad. After this, it was Zhukov who was given orders by Stalin to take Berlin. Colvin's biography concentrates on the Soviet general's strategic planning and the the outcomes of this, including the abortive Operation Mars which is a puzzling and destructive anomaly in Zhukov's otherwise highly capable, occasionally brilliant, and undeniably critical role in Russia's defeat of the Germans in World War II. Zhukov's independence from Stalin while also being his favorite is a vein of the biography. That Zhukov managed to survive Stalin's murderous purges of top Red Army officers testifies to Stalin's recognition of Zhukov's irreplaceable military abilities. This work follows an earlier one by Colvin titled "Nomonhan" on the Russo-Japanese War preceding WWII in which Zhukov's decisive part is covered extensively.
Inadequate entry.......2005-03-30
Western readers need a good general biography of Marshall Zhukov but this entry in the "Great Commanders" series isn't it. Former diplomat and spy Colvin died before the book was published and one must wonder if that accounts for some of the book's failings. It greatly needs a good editor. There are many sentences so awkward that they require rereading just to follow the train of thought. The last few years of Zhukov's life are hardly even covered. No real evaluation of his strategy and tactics is offered nor is his record compared to that of his western counterparts like Montgomery or Eisenhower in any meaningful way. This, if fact, shortchanges the Marshall. General works like this have a greater need for clear maps than scholarly works but this work has only four marginally adequate maps. His conjecture on why Zhukov survived the purges is interesting but is unconvincing without more documentation. There is nothing inherently wrong with survey works based on secondary sources. When well written and accurate, they provide the general reader a useful review of the topic. Sadly, this work fails to meet that standard.
Superficial History.......2004-11-18
You will learn very little about Zhukov upon reading this book. The majority of the work is merely a brief summary of the war on the Eastern front 1941-45. Any detailed descriptions of Zhukov and his life are confined to his early years leading up the Russian Revolution of 1917. There is no insight into his methods of waging war, his mind, his strategies or what moulded his thinking on waging war. There is not even reasoned assessment of Zhukov the soldier at the end of the book. At times one wonders whether this is a biography or merely another potted history of the war on the Eastern Front. There are passing references to greater works by John Ericson and William Spahr amongst others. You will find nothing new or enlightning here. Rather read, Otto Preston Chaney or William Spahr.

Book Description
Paolo Sarpi (1552–1623) is remembered as the defender of Venice against the Papal Interdict of 1606 and as the first, and greatest, historian of the Counter-Reformation. The sources of his undoubted hostility to clerical authority have always been a matter of controversy; many contemporaries claimed that Sarpi was an ‘atheist’, while to others his anticlericalism suggested that he was in secret a Protestant. In the present book David Wootton argues that Sarpi’s public opinions must be assessed in the light of the views expressed in his private papers. Starting from the Pensiere, in which Sarpi formulated a series of philosophical and historical arguments against Christianity, Mr Wootton seeks to reinterpret Sarpi’s life work as being the expression, not of a love of intellectual liberty, nor of a commitment to Protestantism, but of a carefully thought out hostility to doctrinal religion. This interpretation of Sarpi serves to cast new light on the man and his work. But it also throws new light on the intellectual history of his age. Historians such as Lucien Febvre and R. H. Popkin have sought to deny the existence of systematic unbelief in Sarpi’s day. Others, such as Christopher Hill and Carlo Ginzburg, have found evidence of a radical, popular tradition of unbelief. This book seeks, through its account of Sarpi’s beliefs, to penetrate the hypocrisy which contemporaries agreed characterised the age, and to lay the foundations for a new understanding of the intellectual origins of unbelief.

Paolo Sarpi: No Renaissance or Enlightenment.......2007-05-12
David Wootton's book, Paolo Sarpi: Between Renaissance and Enlightenment, barely does justice to the great man and intellectual known as Paolo Sarpi. Throughout the book, Wootton contradicts his primary argument (that Sarpi is an athiest or a Gnostic) and doesn't use solid arguments to back his claim. His argument is based his view of Sarpi's arguments in his Pensiero filosofico. This being said, the book does include some good information on Sarpi and his arguments. I used the book as a source for a twenty-page research paper on Sarpi and his role during the Papal Interdict of 1606 and I found it useful for this paper. Overall, though containing some good information, the book was rather disappointing. Wootton's lack of evidence for his argument and his blatant contradiction of this argument later in the book outweigh any good information the book contains.
(Disclaimer: In the spirit of full disclosure, I was skeptical about Wootton's argument upon first hearing it, since every other source I had read seemed to prove otherwise. No other source that I used backed Wootton's argument.)

Cheerful, but nothing new........2007-06-11
She has a lot of good advice and makes you feel empowered, but really there's nothing new in this book and she didn't really offer solutions other than the obvious.
Sincere, practical advice, a motivational book.......2005-07-20
As a student working to finish a university degree while dealing with a chronic illness (indeterminate IBD with myalgia and fatigue) Ms Hartwell's experiences of living a successful and joy-filled life despite her illness has been an inspiration and source of hope for me. Her humor despite trials is motivating, her wisdom is an amazing resource.
I especially enjoyed her chapter on overcoming the "Damaged Goods Syndrome". A tendency for those with Chronic Illness is to have negative thoughts and self-esteem challenges when we compare ourselves to other more healthy people. I often find myself viewing myself as "not good enough" and am frustrated by how disabling my illness can be in acheiving my goals.
While the mind can work destructively, it can also be employed to build joy, humor, and a positive attitude that helps achieve goals. Learning to identify and work through cognitive distortions gives you a new lens in which to see your life.
Hartwell quote in her book Helen Keller as saying "We could never learn to be brave and patient, if there were only joy in the world."
A must read especially for those with Chronic Kidney Disease.......2003-06-20
As a social worker on a dialysis unit I have found this book extremely helpful in my own education of what new dialysis patients face, but also what patients deal with as a long time dialysis patient. The author leaves no stone unturned and not sugar coating a thing- she's going to tell you how to deal with failure and success each with a bit of unique humor and empathy. She has suggestions how to handle you illness in professional situations as well as how to not get bored if re-hospitalized. Bottom line she is an inspiration and a beneficial read to all!
Inspirational!!!.......2003-06-14
This is one of the best books that I have ever read. I was very inspired by Lori's thoughts on chronic disease. The book also had very good resources on ways to go about our everyday life. I would highly recommend this to anyone with a chronic disease.
Against all odds!.......2003-04-02
Lori's book Chronically Happy is very insightful and inspirational. She shares her first hand experience about her own personal life and what she has had to face in her life in regards to having a chronic illness. She really has many helpful tools for everyday living whether you have a chronic illness or not. She helps bring gratitude into daily life and keeping up a good sense of humor inspite of everything.
I highly recommend this book for everyday reading and also
for those with a chronic illness.
Thanks Lori!!!! You continue to inspire us everyday!!
Sincerely,
Lora Benson

Upland Passage.......2000-06-14
It's guaranteed to put a tear in your eye and a smile on your face- especially if you have lived with and hunted a lab. Our family has owned labs for many years and I and my dogs have traveled the country in pursuit of upland game, as well as ducks and geese. There can't be a better book about the companionship of a good dog. I just wish that it were available in hard cover so that I could give it to my friends.
Such wonderful companions.......1998-07-18
Being a great admirer of this breed,I purchased this book years ago.I recently lost my lab of 13 years and this evening reread this splendid story of two wonderful dogs.Mr Jones' words helped me accept and understand my loss.Thank you for this excellant book.
Now maybe I understand........1998-05-17
I have to confess: I have never understood the appeal of hunting. I love dogs, though, and believe that they should be put to work for their own peace of mind. In any case, this book was beautifully written and made me truly understand why somebody would want to hunt. That's saying a lot. Other titles that people who read and enjoy this book might like: the Gerald Hammond "John Cunningham mysteries" and Dan O'Brien's
Equinox. Altogether an excellent book about a man, the dogs, and the sport he loves.
Book Description
In this gorgeously illustrated, engagingly written and comprehensive look at paper and its extraordinary versatility as a creative medium, pre-eminent origami artist and paper engineer Paul Jackson offers both practical instruction and inspiration for anyone interested in papercraft. In the first section, TECHNIQUES, Jackson offers a step-by-step guide to the fundamental techniques of the major paper arts; the second section, THEMES, presents a gallery of outstanding paperworks. He discusses paper itself and papermaking, and showcases some of the most innovative work being done today by an international array of leading paper engineers and craftspeople. At the end of the book, readers will find a listing of useful addresses of papercraft organizations that publish newsletters, hold meetings or conventions and, in some cases, sell supplies. As Jackson writes in the Foreword to Artistry in Paper, "If you wish to create your own paperworks but are unsure how to begin, start with the exercises and projects relating to a particular technique, then experiment playfully to develop a personal style, perhaps with an abstract or representational theme in mind to guide you. If you are searching for a theme, refer to the paperworks in the THEMES for ideas. I hope this book will inspitre you to create with paper, and that you will come to know the many pleasures of working with this extraordinary material."

I just like to "work" with paper ... and in this book i find what a had been looking for. And today we have a lot of amazing papers ... and we must to recicle than. One off this way is do art with the paper.
another retread disguised as a new work.......2007-02-26
Publishers who deal with origami books are becoming more and more notorious for repacking and renaming old books and presenting them as "new." Paul Jackson is a wonderful paper artist and teacher, and as I understand it, he has no control over what publishers do with this title since he sold the rights to it over 15 years ago, but this book has been around since ca. 1991. Now a publisher wants to sell it with a new title and new cover. You have to be Sherlock Holmes anymore to find out if a "new" origami book is original material or a retread. Please do your research before you buy and try to determine if you already own the book in another format. I want to emphasize that Paul Jackson disavows any collusion in this matter and says he doesn't make any money off these reproductions of his old works. My rating of the book is not based on its merits but on the ethical dealings of the publisher.
Even beginners aren't left behind........2006-09-24

The Truth.......2006-09-08
The truth is Veronica Crawford is a very strong person. She overcame alot of problems caused mainly by her ADHD and low self image. She has a huge heart and is only looking out for the best interest of her students. LDI has helped several students live independently, who would not be able to without this program. She has devoted her life to helping individuals overcoming their hidden disabilities. I recently have read this book and have gained a new respect for Veronica and all of her accomplishments. I also gained knowledge about myself and my sister who also suffers from ADD. Veronica and her book has changed my life and enlightened me to others.
Embracing The Monster: August 13, 2004.......2004-08-14
This book is SO AWESOME and WONDERFUL !!!! A really well written book told in a narrative style. Vernoica Crawford is to be admired and applauded for telling her story of how she successfully overcame her hidden disabilities. She gives hope and inspiration to others, with hidden disabilities, that this is possible. Dr. Larry Silver is very insightful in his foreword and commentaries after each chapter.
Embracing the Monster.......2002-04-11
I recently finished reading the book Embracing the Monster by Veronica Crawford. In a word, my reaction is magnificent. Ms. Crawford describes her struggles in dealing with her hidden disabilities honestly and poignantly. As a clinical supervisor for counselors, and as an Adjunct Professor, I will use her book when training counseling. I recommend Ms. Crawford's book without reservation to parents, persons who have a disability, school personnel, and mental health providers.
Autobiography with a review of hidden disabilities.......2002-03-21
Embracing The Monster: Overcoming The Challenges Of Hidden Disabilities blends autobiography with a review of hidden disabilities in a title which chronicles the author's struggles with learning disability, bipolar disorder, dyslexia and other problems. Clinical commentary by Dr. Larry Silver concludes each chapter and provides a physician's perspective on this informative and highly recommended first-person account.
