Book Description
Corridors of Mirrors: The Spirit of Europe in Contemporary British and Romanian Fiction examines the current notion of Europe as expressed in Romanian and British fiction. Br"nzeu, working from both historical and contemporary literature, surveys symbolic notions of the common cultural links which seem to embody "European" identity. In particular, the author examines the shift in post-Iron Curtain literary concepts of this ancient identity.

Book Description
Don Isaac Abravanel (1437-1508) was a major historical figure during the waning of the Middle Ages. Statesman, diplomat, courtier, and financier, he was, at the same time, a scholar of encyclopedic learning, a philosopher, an exegete, a prolific author, a mystic, and an apocalyptist. In Abravanel, B. Netanyahu suggests, two long lines of tradition met and concluded: that of medieval Jewish statesmen and that of medieval Jewish philosophers. In what is both a biography and an exploration of Abravanel's thought and influence, Netanyahu describes how Abravanel illuminated the grave crisis and profound transformation experienced by the Jewish people after the Spanish expulsion.
First published in 1953, Don Isaac Abravanel has been out of print for several years. This new edition includes revisions in the text, notes, and bibliography.
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant Scholarly Study.......2007-03-26
Benzion Netanyahu's brilliant scholarly study of Don Isaac Abravanel will be of interest to any serious student of medieval life during the period of the Spanish Inquisition. This biography of the statesman, philosopher, mystic, writer, and royal financier is painstakingly researched, using an abundance of primary source material. It is an indepth, masterfully written examination which meticulously scrutinizes and illuminates the life of Abravanel in the royal court and, later, as a Jewish exile in Naples and Vienna, where he solidifies his political and religious world view. Highly recommended as a serious, contemplative work. This is an interesting and enlightening read, particularly for the historian and scholar.
Biography of a Jew whose Influence far exceeds his Fame.......2002-01-24
Don Isaac Abravenel lived at the juncture of the Medieval and the Renaissance, and through the expulsion of the Jews from Spain. His writings help preserve the Jews through this troubled time, but also delayed the resettlement of the Land of Israel.
Ben-Zion Netanyahu (father of the hero of Entebbe, and of the recent Israeli PM) first tells of the life of Abravenel, and then discusses his outlook and religion. This unusual treatment works very well. Netanyahu first introduces us to the attitudes and assumptions of the people who lived at the time, which are so often very different than our own, and then discusses how Abravenel fit into, or differed from, that zeitgeist. By building step by step -- World Outlook, View of History, Political Concepts, and finally Messianism, the author educates us about Abravenel's world, as well as his beliefs. I was surpred at Abravenel's prediction that the coming of the Messiah would be immediately preceded by a war between Christians and Moslems.
The endnotes, bibliography, and index are all very helpful.

You don't have to read this book from the first page straight on through, although you can. You may want to read the first chapter and then move to the chapters that affect you the most. In Prostate Cancer For Dummies, you'll gain insight into
- Discovering the key symptoms of prostate cancer
- Recognizing the risk factors, and who's most likely to have prostate cancer
- Getting a diagnosis, and what's involved

- Changing your lifestyle to decrease your risk of a recurrence
- Coping with the aftermath, from temporary to permanent side effects
- Handling work and family, and how to help others understand what you're going through

But after you recover from the initial shock of diagnosis, you need to educate yourself, and, with the help of your physician, make a plan for getting the best treatment possible. Prostate Cancer For Dummies will help you achieve these goals and encourage you to maintain your commitment to managing your health.

Buy this book before you do anything.......2007-09-09
Absolutely the best source of information on Prostate Cancer and I've bought and read most of them. Easy to read and straight forward for all readers. So don't make any decisions until you read this book. I'm a health care professional and even I benefited from this book.
Excellent for the Newly Informed Cancer Patient, BUT CAUTION!.......2006-09-14
I freaked out when I was told by my urologist, just a few months ago, that my biopsy showed prostate cancer and---by the way---would I like to be put on his surgery schedule for next month! This is a fabulous book and one I throughly recommend for the newly diagnosed man who is reeling from the shock of getting this rotten news and not sure what to do. HOWEVER, the book is written by an American surgeon and that means a heavy bias toward treatment for everyone (even low risk cancers) and preferably surgery. It turned out, in my case, that the cancer is less aggressive than my urologist was leading me to believe (get that second opinion!). Monitoring the cancer for changes is a defensible strategy for avoiding the awful side effects of ANY of the treatments for prostate cancer, if your cancer is at a low to medium risk. All that said, this is still a great book and covers most all the bases.
Very Informative Primer on Prostate Cancer.......2005-07-11
My husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1999. He has had two cryo ablation procedures and yet still has the cancer (confined to the prostate). Having worked for a well-known urologist for many years, I feel Dr. Lange's book is the best literature we have read over the years and has helped answer the many questions we have had in language my husband can understand. Our urologist, however, spends a great deal of time with us explaining everything.
Everything you (or your partner) needs to know.......2003-11-16
This book covers prostate cancer from the prospective of a surgeon who treats the disease and who admits that he was terrified when he was diagnosed with it himself. Prostate Cancer for Dummies covers symptoms of prostate cancer and how it's treated (surgery, radiation, etc.) and also covers how to cope with the side effects, such as impotence, depression and so on. The author factors in how cancer affects the whole family and discusses how the person with cancer can help his family help him. The newest studies on cutting edge treatments, foods to eat, how to prevent cancer from coming back and everything you might want to know about prostate cancer is in this book.
Prostate cancer data simplified.......2003-05-05
As a person who's spent hundreds of hours researching and reading about prostate cancer over the last four years, I picked up Lange and Adamec's new book with misgivings that quickly changed into affirmative head-nodding. I found the book to be well-organized, and as I scanned and flipped back and forth through its coverage of all the big questions, I concluded this is a book that has long been needed. Although the book is in the DUMMIES series, it is from start to finish a first-rate professional and easily-readable treatment of a complex and deadly serious subject -- prostate cancer. Whether it's one's first foray into the shifting world of prostate cancer data, treatment and research or one wants to double-check what one has learned, this is THE book to buy.

Zoo Captive writes quite a "tail".......2006-05-17
If you love animals, let alone zoos, you'll love this humorous behind the scenes view of the world famous San Diego Zoo. Author Bill Seaton, former SD Zoo public relations professional, recounts many "tails" that anyone will enjoy. It is truly a fun and easy read.
Very funny,but educational as well.......2006-05-02
This is a wonderfully funny book. Bill Seaton has two qualities a good humor writer needs: he is not afraid to make himself the butt of the humor, and he's a bit zany himself. But he writes clearly and well, and knows how to tell a good story -- there are dozens in this book. But the book is very informative on the world of animal and you will find many interesting facts you didn't know -- such as why they bleach the polar bear's hair. An ideal book for children -- of all ages.
San Diego Zoo Stand-Up Comedian.......2006-04-27
Bill Seaton's collection of antics and mishaps during his tenure at the San Diego Zoo is good enough for a stand-up comedy routine! The chapters are entertaining and brief, offering an amusing -- and informative -- alternative to magazine reading during doctors' visits, airline flights, etc. Having rubbed shoulders with Joan Embry, Jack Hanna, Johnny Carson, Phyllis Diller and other stars (along with chimps, snakes, sea lions et al), he provides a hilarious behind-the-scenes view of what makes a world-famous zoo tick. As Tony the Tiger would say, "It's G-RRRR-EAT!"
Se.......2006-04-11
Bill Seaton shows marvellous talent in describing his hilarious experiences as public relations director for the San Diego Zoo, which every visitor recognizes as one of the country's best. In the process, he offers a great deal of solid information on what makes zoos tick. In other words, this book is highly informative as well as superbly entertaining.

Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Super Workbook!.......2007-02-12
This is a great way to scrapbook your lifetime, with or without photos. Something will then exist long after you're gone, especially for the grandkids or the family historian.
A BOOST for those who want to leave a legacy...........2006-02-01
This book was the ONLY idea book that I read cover to cover, many times! Angie has done a phenomenal job encouraging the reader to do a search within and then place it in layouts/journals. I have used this resource multiple times in my own scrapbooking trek. And since reading this book, I have found when I have scrapbooker's block, once I do a layout of myself, my creativity is unleashed once again! It's as though I am "being true to myself"! Thank you Angie for this boost for all of us who are trying to leave a legacy!
Shockingly disappointing.......2005-10-15
I was disappointed in this book on many fronts. First of all, the price for the amount of information you receive is very steep, especially when compared to the $10 Making Memories books and various companies' Scrapbook Encyclopedias available. Second, this author seems to have very little expertise in the area of scrapbooking, despite her self-promotion. It is definitely a book geared toward a beginner as the information is what one would find in any free beginner scrapbooking class given at your local craft store. Lastly, I can summarize this book in the following way: Do a layout about these areas of yourself--
being a child, Celebrations in your life, being a youth, being in school, being a spouse, being a parent, having friends, playing sports, having a career, being a good person, being a religious person, your beliefs, what your priorities are, what you are working on, what you dream about, and how you want to be remembered. Don't bother to buy a book that is really just a short list of ideas stretched out by a unqualified writer to make a buck.
Finding out who I am........2004-04-13
This is an excellent book/project for anyone who wants to understand themselves better. I'm free from an abusive relationship now, and with a man who treats me like gold.
So I don't know a better time to start learning about myself.
And it's been quite a while since I've seen my family, so I'm making copies of the scrapbook pages I'm making to send to my mother. Thank you, Angie! Wonderful job!!
Best idea-starter I've ever found.......2004-01-14
You can find hundreds of resources out there that just give you layouts. They're a dime a dozen, all tripping over each other with endless duplication.
But this is the first one I've found that gives you a totally new perspective on scrapping and journaling. Instead of just doing the same tired old "event-event-event" formats, Angie Pedersen has had the brilliant idea of examining your own entire life-story as a whole and putting it into a meaningful context.
She's provided tons of quotations that are wonderful idea-starters. For example, one said, "There's something joyful and comforting about ice cream." Not only did it make me laugh, but it made me think about the major role ice cream has played in my life. Going back through old pictures, I found some of cranking out homemade ice cream with my parents when I was a kid, many birthday pics with my little face smeared chocolate, a midnight raid on the dorm's ice-cream machine during finals week in college, shots of enjoying ice cream with my own kids at the zoo, and sharing a big bowl with my baby grandson. Yup, I ALWAYS reach for the ice cream! But until I read Angie's book, I would NEVER have thought about combining all those different events over my life-span into one layout.
In one chapter, Angie talks about analyzing the people and the sources that have been influential in shaping your spiritual outlook on life. Just reading her book's quotations and thinking about this was a valuable experience in figuring out how I got to be who I am. Naturally, I didn't have pictures for a lot of this, but Angie's suggestions for no-picture situations made it an easy layout. Same with thinking about the times I've had to overcome something I was afraid of doing.
This book is nothing short of a radical new way to look at scrapping. Not only does it give a different "feel" to your pages, but it's a great way to gain new insights into your life. This book should be in the hands of every therapist!

Book Description
Southern France offers its visitors many wonderful sights ranging from the exquisite natural beauty of its mountains and coast to the artifacts of civilization dating from Roman times to the present day. There are many excellent guide books to these sights and it is our intention to supplement these, not to replace them. All tourists will marvel at the remains of the magnificent Roman aqueduct of Pont du Gard, the breathtaking views along the corniche coastal drives or the majesty of Mount Ste Victoire; but there are also individual preferences. Some may enjoy SCUBA-diving or hang-gliding on the beaches while others thrill to the jingle of coins in the slot machines of Monte Carlo. For some, though, it may be just as exciting to stand in a room where Renoir painted or to see the font at which Czanne was baptized. During many personal trips to Europe, we got much enjoyment from visiting sites associated with the lives of prominent artists. Sometimes we found out about these places in various guidebooks, but usually we happened upon them serendipitously. These sites were sometimes in small cities or towns not covered in the guides or the standard information sent by the national tourist offices, but often they were even in the major cities where tourists usually go. How disappointed we would have been to have found out about one of these interesting places after returning home, especially if we had been close by but didn't know about it. We began to scour multiple guides to the same area and found that many such places are haphazardly included in one or another guide. But how many busy trip-planners have time for such extensive research? Why weren't these facts more easily accessible? Why couldn't we look up our favorite artists somewhere and find out about all the places to go in a region without such time-consuming effort? We decided that when we retired we would try to produce some books which would serve this purpose.
In the late 1980s we gave up our professional careers as a research scientist and a librarian in demanding corporate positions and decided to focus future trips on researching guidebooks that would have met our earlier needs. During the last ten years we have spent over thirty months traveling in Europe, driving tens of thousands of miles among cities and towns of all sizes. We were convinced that we were not the only people interested in such sites and that such reference books would satisfy a specific need for scholars and others planning a European trip, especially if their time was limited. The comments of many people we have spoken to about our idea and the positive reception of our first volume in this series have confirmed this belief.
The region covered by this book is primarily that of Provence, but the sites also span the Mediterranean coast from the Spanish border in the west to the Italian border in the east. This region has long been a favorite place of artists because of the interplay of the dazzling sunlight and the harsh landscapes. Although the area was heavily developed into a tourist Mecca after World War II, there remained enough aesthetic appeal that many artists still chose to live and work here until their deaths. We have selected eleven artists whose relationships to the region vary diversely. Paul Czanne, born in Aix-en-Provence, found his native region far more compatible with his daring new style of painting than the artistic community of Paris and thus spent most of his life in the South. The next six chapters cover artists who established homes in the region later in their lives: Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Le Corbusier, Max Ernst and Marc Chagall. The next two men, Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh, had brief stays here but their artistic development was greatly influenced by these experiences. Finally, we relate the cases of Gustave Courbet and Joan Mir who both had important patrons here.
The book presents information on over two hundred fifty sites in South France relating to the lives of these artists; it is arranged with a chapter for each individual. Each chapter is presented in relation to a city which was central to the artist's life in the region; other cities are treated below in alphabetical order. Two sections are included under most cities: a narrative description of the artist's connection to it and a list of specific sites arranged chronologically. These sites relate to both the lives and work of the artists, e.g. locations of residences, studios, weddings, graves, painting subjects and museums. Sites which are essentially gone are indicated with a diamond symbol in the margin; those of extraordinary interest are similarly marked with a star. All names are given in French to correspond with local information which the traveler may be using. In some cities, where there are a small number of sites, they have been included in the narrative. For the convenience of the reader we have included two indices. The first is an alphabetical list of the fifty-two cities covered in the book with citations for the chapter(s) in which they appear. The other is a listing of American museums mentioned in the text as housing various works of the artists.
Our information comes not only from travel guides but also from comprehensive biographies and miscellaneous supplementary works on each person. After combing these sources, we traveled extensively throughout the area to verify the present status of the sites identified. These travels were important for several reasons: lack of specificity in many of the sources; various ages of the sources; and the constant march of development. In actuality, we found many items to be quite different from the written sources and often difficult to locate. We hope that our work abroad makes the reader's experience considerably easier.
Provence and the surrounding area is one of the most beautiful in Europe. This book is intended to show the readers the region's deeper value by making them aware of its importance to the great artists who came here from many countries of the world. We hope our choice of artists has a wide appeal and that our readers' travels in South France will be greatly enriched by having read this book.
