Several Hundred Guys and One Gal.......2002-02-12
This personal chronicle, which came out a year ago, is particularly interesting in the light of more recent events. The author, born a decade or so ahead of the much-discussed Greatest Generation, shares their sense of mission and heroic destiny as she accepts a wartime assignment with the American Red Cross in Asia. But unlike many of her compatriots called to serve overseas, she is already fully formed by a gentler, more gracious milieu. A well-educated pastor's daughter, raised in a sympathetic family and become an accomplished musician teaching in a prestigious public school, Eddie is sent to direct programs in one or more of the recently established overseas clubs where servicemen might renew themselves during their hours off duty.
Biding time in a succession of canteens, infirmaries, and one-room shacks in India, she has difficulty imagining what she might do of value for a team of black American engineers as they struggle to build the road that is to save Burma from being conquered by the Japanese. The labor is excruciating, the conditions deplorable, the workers (both imported and indigenous) shamelessly exploited...the only viable development for her being a deepening friendship with a medical officer who hopes to marry her. Sent on to China, though, she really hits her stride. Drawing on a long-nurtured fascination with that country, she enters wholeheartedly into her work, making the most of what she recognizes as a privileged adventure and mustering all her resources to the task of establishing her ultimate club program. Together with her supervisor and the servicemen who volunteer their talents, she furnishes and decorates the clubhouse, stocks a library, a record collection, and an ensemble of instruments, and organizes a variety of social and cultural activities, including improvised musical and theatrical productions and classical music sessions by candlelight. Understandably, she is often approached romantically, not only--as she remarks--because of the scarcity of females, but also undoubtedly because of the fine-featured, high-contrast beauty that shines through the book's accompanying photos, where she resembles a sort of long-limbed Vivien Leigh in Katharine Hepburn's costumes, mingling as gracefully with the natives as any latter-day princess. To her mind, for one, she is a civilizing influence, keeping the men in training for their women back home.
If the Japanese during that period are her Taliban--and she inadvertently suggests several parallels, from their brutal treatment of women to their ethically empty preoccupation with power and conquest--she never lets them ruin her trip, not even for a day. Or so it seems, perhaps because her narrative is filtered through letters written to her parents and her sister Dorothy, who is simultaneously doing counseling and social work in England, Belgium and France. Dot's letters supply an important supporting voice: that of a more conventional older sister, who remains unconditionally loyal and helpful, especially when it comes to satisfying the Red Cross, with which she was to make her own life's work. Though we never hear from him, we are informed that brother Vinton is a recognized expert on chemical warfare, adding another note that has been updated by circumstance.
However necessary the current American retaliation in the Middle East--and most of us see it as imperative--one cannot help being stricken, at the same time, by a sense that something has been lost since the days detailed here. One hears almost weekly, now, of unnecessary violence and destruction by American soldiers, whether because of blunders or--more disturbingly--because of aggression gone berserk. Is there any modern equivalent of the Red Cross club program overseas? Could it work for the current generation of soldiers? Are there people competent and willing to carry it through? Judging from the many lively and moving anecdotes in this book, such an institution seems to offer possibilities not only for safeguarding the humanity of service people abroad, but also for engaging the empathy of other peoples everywhere.

Book Description
Introduction by Evelyn Underhill. "Jacob Boehme, who reveals to us in this book some of the secrets of his inner life, was among the most original of the great Christian mystics. With a natural genius for the things of the spirit, he also exhibited many of the characteristics of the psychic, the seer, and the metaphysician; and his influence on philosophy has been at least as great as his influence on religious mysticism.

The Juicing Book.......2007-05-17
Very good information on juicing. I would give this as a gift.
Good juicing book........2003-05-09
This book is not too bad figure in it came out in 1989 and much of the info is still up to date. In this book though it gives you the problem and then which vegetables are good for this problem for example:Blood pressure: beet, beet green, cabbage sprout, cucumber, spinach, wheatgrass. Get the picture. It also has a section on fasting, designing a juice program and buying a juicer. It also got some recipes it does not tell you what there for. Like Juiceman Jay's book will tell you if your fatigued try such and such a juice. In this book you got to figure it out yourself. But like I said for coming out in 1989 its gotta a lot of info.
The best all-round book on juicing!.......1998-03-17
This book is my juicing bible. It contains an easy reference for which fruits and vegetables are helpful for various nutritional needs as well as a "conditions" section with recommendations for using various juice combinations to assist the body to work most efficiently. Also includes a nice selection of recipes.
Book Description
Dori was taught to cook homegrown foods in her mother's kitchen: dishes like Smothered Chicken, Fried Green Tomato Parmigiana, Warm Honey Gingerbread, and Pecan Pie with Black Walnut Crust. And every recipe had a story to go with it.
Along with classic Southern dishes, Dori's own fresh-picked favorites, traditional hearty fare, and cooking for Northerners, Dori includes innovative ways to substitute sugar and fat using fresh fruits and vegetables to add sweetness and flavor.
Customer Reviews:
A Treasure. Not just a cookbook. .......2007-02-21
I stumbled upon Dori Sanders one day, picking up a copy of Clover on a whim. What I discovered was an authentic southern voice. Dori Sanders Country Cooking is yet another treat. The receipes are all simple and useplain and simple everyday items. While they may require a bit more time, the effort is well worth the extra time. Tipsy Chicken, a peacan pie to die for, a pick of biscuit receipes, gravy and biscuits...many of these receipes bring back summer dinners at my grandmother's home in Buda, Texas(dinner was at the noon hour for farm folk). Intertwinned amongst all these culinary treasures, is a running narrative of everyday life on a farm. I may never indulge in pig lips, but I well remember the nonstop activity on the days my grandfather slaughtered a cow and we all pitched in to help, and ate foods from that cow, things I might have never tasted living in a suburb of Dallas. Dori Sanders is a treasure, a cleareyed look back, seldom sentimental and full of grace. Like a wonderful dinner, she makes you wish she had written more.
Dori Sanders and Her Books.......2002-09-11
Not only can I give Dori Sanders' books a positive review, but a review on Dori herself. I recently met her at her peach farmstand in Filbert, South Carolina. She greets you as if you are an old friend in her warm and friendly manner. She speaks eloquently, her words flowing like a butterfly floating on a breeze. I'm sure she has never met a stranger. One word describes her best: Genuine. She is proud of her past, her life and her accomplishments in a humble sort of way. She is a real treasure and it was an honor to meet her. Nancy
Emeril Would Call It "Food Of Love".......2002-08-23
I saw Ms. Sanders "plugging" her book on Food TV and was captured immediately. She seemed to be the kind of person you would love to have as a neighbor. After checking out the book, I'm ordering her other two. The recipes I have tried are wonderful. They bring back treasured memories of favorite aunts and their country cooking of my childhood. Her background narration for the recipes is an added bonus. Don't miss this opportunity.
easy to use, easy to read, delicious to make.......2002-08-19
I first saw Ms. Sanders on Cooking Live on the Food Network. I was amazed at her Easy Peach Cobbler recipe, so I looked it up online and tried it out. I really didn't think peach cobbler could be so easy to make until I tried her recipe, and to tell you the truth, I'm not a baked fruit fan and I never really even liked peach cobbler since all I've ever had was cafeteria and buffet cobbler. It was my first attempt at making cobbler, and it came out just right. The recipe was nearly fool proof and insanely easy to make.
I gave myself a sample of my first homemade cobbler and all I can say is this- I never liked peach cobbler until I made Dori's cobbler. I love it now. I ran out and bought Dori's cookbook right afterwards.
The recipes presented in Dori's book are all relatively easy to make. It's southern cooking made non-southerner friendly. I come from an Asian background and my husband's and I are both from California, so we're the sorts that don't know what Creole is, and the only icon we can name of southern cooking is Emeril Lagasse.
This cookbook has been a dream, though. It's absolutely delightful! As another commenter noted, don't start your diet now. This is comfort food, very delicious soulful food. Like I mentioned with the peach cobbler, I'm not a big dessert fan and I never liked anything that resembled fruit pie, but oh my goodness, I downed four servings of that cobbler until I couldn't eat anymore. I've been trying to make all her recipes, finding occasions that would best match them, and all of them have come out better than I expected. It's truly a wonderful cookbook when you can't wait to try making something new from it because you've had such delightful experiences with all the past recipes.
Cooking is a joy with this book, and you don't have to be an experienced cook to enjoy making these recipes. Mothers, girlfriends, wives, husbands, sons, and fathers, if you're looking for good recipes that'll make quality food that'll wow your family, give this cookbook a try. If you're looking for a few recipes to try before making the commitment of buying this book, Food Network's webpage offers free recipes Dori shared with Sara Moulton during her guest appearance on Cooking Live. Give it a try, and I'll bet you'll be back for more!
Don't Start Your Diet Now.......2002-03-28
Well written recipes that produce delicious dishes. I made several recipies from Ms. Sanders cookbook and they were all fantastic. I enjoyed this book so much that I bought it for my aunt.
These recipes are for simple, comfort foods -- foods that will make you smile and reach for a second (or third) helping.

Cute.......2000-07-11
The book makes me happy in the sense that a mutt can make himself a part of a family, actually an indispensable part so naturally. The phrases used in the book are best chosen so that it is easy to read and feel the real emotion in it.
A true family member.......2000-06-26
Rusty just had so many things to make you love him. It paints a true picture of some of the bad times along with all the antics he took part in. I'd recommend it to readers of all ages.
A Feel-Good Book.......2000-06-21
More Than a Mutt hits the spot for anyone who loves dogs. Roger did a great job of humanizing a very special dog's personality. Our whole family enjoyed the book and we highly recommend it.
My Mutterings.......2000-06-15
More Than A Mutt is an exceptionally good book, filled with good humor. One can sense the love, appreciation and joy this dog gave to Roger and his family. This is a story that all pet lovers can relate to.
Learn to love pets.......2000-06-02
Having been a neighbor for many years, I observed his love for animals. Not being an animal lover, the book touched me deeply and made me think differently about my feelings. Reading this book brought proof that a dog can be man's best friend. Rusty's antics were memorable.

Skillfully drafted and endlessly varied, the wealth of stitching patterns in 250 Continuous-Line Quilting Designs ought to satisfy many quilters looking for interesting motifs to enliven a project. Author Laura Lee Fritz lays brief but good groundwork for planning out the pattern on the quilt top and transferring designs, then devotes virtually the entire book to the designs themselves. Her extensive repertoire of motifs is divided into seven categories that include animals, domestic objects, botanicals, and abstracts. From a simple geometric to a detailed creature to an intricate scene, these designs should please quilters of various skill levels. --Amy Handy

250 Continuous-Line.......2007-02-07
Great practise book. Lots of designs. Good addition to a machine quilting library.
Free Form Quilting Resource.......2005-07-27
Excellent resource of wonderful free form expressive quilting designs. Not your traditional patterns, but very usable & spontaneous designs. If you want to quilt "off the beaten path" this book is for you.
Not very satisfied.......2004-03-18
Yes, the book does provide you with 250 continuous line designs; however, I couldn't find more than a few that I would even consider using. The patterns are very child-like and may be appropriate if one was quilting for a baby or child. The book is nicely segmented by area (bird, animals etc.) Very few instructions, only the basics. For me, it wasn't worth the price and had I had the chance to see it before purchasing, it would not be in my library. A good choice if you want a way to quilt outlines of animals, plants, and birds.
terrific inspiration for machine quilters.......2002-07-25
This book is completely unique in the world of quilting designs. All are intended for use with a sewing machine, although it need not be a longarm quilting machine. I did fine with several of them on a regular Bernina. I am sick to death of precise, cutesy feathers and hearts. This book was like a fresh breeze coming through, letting me see machine quilting in a whole new way. Not only have I used the designs, I have been able to invent some of my own using inspiration from this book. Most of all, it loosened me up. Straight, perfect lines are NOT always best. These naturalistic, freeform designs were just what I needed. AND the book is so [inexpensive], how can you go wrong?
Uninspiring.......2002-06-22
The designs in this book are uninspiring and not even well done. It is Ok to have the outline of a dog as a quilt design, but it should be well executed and not look like it was done by an amateur. I have picked this book up a half dozen times, but was never inspired to buy it.

Although out of print for many years, this book still contains many great recipes from Janet Ballantyne. It was first printed in 1984 and an anniversary edition was printed in 1994. This cook book has been a great help in turning my piles of produce from my new garden into new foods and meals for my family. I can strongly recommend both its ease of use and the quality of the recipes it contains. A favorite is the beets "Shocking Pink Soup" which turned a supsicious looking vegetable into a now favorite family dish. I am ordering copies for my grown childrens families.

Customer Reviews:
OK...read on.......2005-05-14
The book has good tips and info that I found helpful reminders I already knew but needed to be refeshed about them I realized. A few things mentioned in the book I found worthy of pen highlighting. However, from the reviews I thought it to have something very outstanding I or most people wouldn't normally or have never known/heard about. Maybe perhaps too on a deeper level this is what I and many others are looking for...a miracle. Perhaps I have to be a bit realistic as well. I think for others who are totally new might find this book enlightening and helpful guide. Having been familar with Perio process first hand, natural heatlth remedies, and veganism...I didn't find the book all that unique or earth shattering. It is a nice, straightforward, primer/overview of some basic things. It is good too for those new to Perio issues that it offers chapter on what happens with a Perio exam what to expect...and so forth. The book explains also what, how, and why gum disease starts. It has a tooth chart but not very helpfull for me in that I would have appreciated an actual mouth drawing like the lay person is familiar with...even having Perio experience first hand doesn't make me an instant dentist. On earlier pages there is a whole run down as to what tooth relates to what parts of the body. However, there is no reference to the fact that a tooth chart exists later on. In fact, the earlier run down has the number and technical name of each tooth..yet not very helpful to the lay person if there is not a useful visual to refer to that corresponds to the numbers and technical names easily. In other words "Tooth Chart for Dummies". The book offers consistant mention of foods that are good for the health of the gums and so forth. It also makes reference to illness and life changes that may involve gum disease...and again it takes the time to mention foods, supplements that can help. The standard mention of the maintainance of good diet, excercise, and such is in the book.
Important book!!!!!.......2004-12-19
This is an excellent book! Sandra Senzon shows us wonderful holistic ways to create healty gums, through using healing herbs and many other means. This is an important book and if followed does work! It is curious that more dentist do not use these tools. Sandy Senzon is a wonderful hygenist and a gifted healer. I highly recommend this book.
Preventing and reversing gum disease.......2003-05-23
This is an excellent book written by a very dedicated dental hygienist who does her best to impart her years of acquired wisdom, so that we can take responsibility for our dental health and protect our teeth. The author teaches us that most people lose teeth as they get older, not because of tooth decay, but rather because of gum disease.
She explains what happens and why, and goes on to teach us how to look after our gums, whether they are currently good, or in bad shape. She show us how to set up an at-home hygiene center for looking after our gums.
This book contains lots of very useful information, not just from an understanding viewpoint, but from a practical self treatment viewpoint as well.
Highly recommended for anyone who wants to prevent or treat gum disease.

When the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, few could have anticipated its potential for devastation. Pulitzer prize-winning author John Hersey recorded the stories of Hiroshima residents shortly after the explosion and, in 1946, Hiroshima was published, giving the world first-hand accounts from people who had survived it. The words of Miss Sasaki, Dr. Fujii, Mrs. Nakamara, Father Kleinsorg, Dr. Sasaki, and the Reverend Tanimoto gave a face to the statistics that saturated the media and solicited an overwhelming public response. Whether you believe the bomb made the difference in the war or that it should never have been dropped, "Hiroshima" is a must read for all of us who live in the shadow of armed conflict.
Book Description
August 6, 1945, Hiroshima, Japan: The first atom bomb in history is dropped on a city, killing 100,000 people. Told through the memories of six survivors, this timeless, powerful, and compassionate work has become a classic that stirs the conscience of humanity. Considered a journalistic masterpiece, this book describes what happened during the days immediately following August 6, and it also includes a final chapter-"Aftermath"-written forty years after the bomb to explore the fates of those survivors. Complete and unabridged. 4 cassettes.

The Hobo philosopher.......2007-09-05
Hiroshima is a book written by a man by the name of John Hersey. Mr. Hersey was born in Tientsin, China in 1914. My guess is that John Hersey is no longer with us - if he is ... you have my apologies John.
The book covers the lives of six "hibakusha" - A-bomb survivors. It covers their lives from the day the bomb hit them until ...?
What point did Mr. Hersey have in mind in writing such a book, I ask myself? What lesson is to be learned from reading such a book?
When I finished reading another controversial book years ago, Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler, I asked myself the same question. I said to myself - if the lessons learned from reading that book could be condensed into one sentence what would it be? I think my conclusion satisfies both these books. I decided on the following: When you hear men talking of War as if it is a positive experience - beware.
Our 20th Century: The Age of Violence.......2007-07-31
I recently decided to reread this book by Pulitzer Prize winner John Hersey, due to the fact that my youngest daughter sent me a letter and a postcard while she was visiting Hiroshima, Japan. Before her departure to Japan, I asked her to write me a letter of her thoughts, and experiences when she visited the city of Hiroshima: one of the many places she was to visit over a three week period. For me, being a historian, I was interested in her observations. And these observations by my daughter Catherine, a 12-year-old child, touched me deeply.
Many reviewers have written excellent reviews of the book. And I would highly recommend other viewers to read this book. It was published in 1946, just one year after the atomic bomb was dropped. Hersey's essay was later published into a book, and in 1985 a final chapter was added to the book. This latest chapter was new for me. I had previously read the book, but this was the first time I read the final chapter. In the book, Hersey recounts the lives of six survivors who managed to survive the hellish bombing of Hiroshima. This is a highly recommended read, especially considering that these six survivors' accounts was published so close to the end of the war.
I have much material, both film and books on Hiroshima, however, since I had read this novel as a young man, I wanted to revisit this book. As a historian, I am interested in objectivity in historical subject matter. As the reviewer JAMES DeWITT has written, this book is not a novel, but a straight-forward account of six survivors, and Hersey writes in a way that does not judge the decision whether or not to drop the bomb. As a historian, I am not about to answer the question of whether dropping the bomb was right or wrong: History is not about what should have happened, but what did happen. Instead, let us hope that if there is anything good that can come out of this terrible chapter in history, the one fact is that these terrible weapons have not been used since WWII. Hopefully statesmen and others have learned that the price for using these weapons are too high. Moreover, what happened at Hiroshima has confirmed the fact that the use of these weapons should be avoided at all costs. Because what we humans do know about Hiroshima, is that the consequences of using these weapons would be catastrophic. And today, these weapons are much more powerful.
Over the next fews days I will be discussing this chapter of history to my young daughter. I will go over her letter she sent me, and view films of this tragic event with her. Hopefully, I can try and explain why the bomb was dropped. And maybe even try and answer her many questions. And let us all hope these weapons are never used again; because contrary to what some people have stated, there is no such thing as a winnable nuclear war.
Seriously Good Book.......2007-07-07
I really liked this book. It is small and a very quick read but completely worth it. I highly recommend this!
Literary Journalism at its Finest.......2007-06-12
Published in 1946, this remarkable article or book was based on interviews with survivors of the first city to be destroyed by a single weapon. John Hersey was a war correspondent during World War II. His "Hiroshima" has been rated as number one in The Top Ten Works of Journalism in the United States in the 20th Century, as determined by The New York University journalism faculty and a panel of critics that included David Brinkley and Morley Safer. "Hiroshima" took over the entire August 30, 1946 issue of "The New Yorker" and the issue sold out within hours. After reading this rather slim book, I can understand why. It relates the stories of six survivors in a very interesting and readable way. Hersey makes us feel the impact of the bomb and its horrors in a very personal way, yet he doesn't go overboard on the gore. There is a follow-up study almost 40 years later, and we visit these same characters again. Surprisingly, none of the six hated the U.S.; they understood that drastic measures were neeeded to end a war that the Japanese obsessively fought; throwing reason out the window. The book can be read in an evening, but you will want to reread it, as well.

Not Just for WWII Buffs.......2003-06-20
This is not a book for just WWII buffs. I guarantee that anyone who appreciates fascinating and well-written non-fiction with an original angle will love They Can't Take That Away From Me. What sold me was the unique and artistic style employed in this POW memoir; it brought a fresh perspective to Ralph Rentz's struggle, triumph and the invincibility of his nightmare.
More than just a "Sentimental Journey".......2003-06-10
They Can't Take That Away From Me truly is an odyssey of one, rather atypical, American POW. However, it is more than just a "Sentimental Journey". This memoir is unlike any other WWII story, in that it reaches beyond the prosaic collage of nostalgic gore and glory and invites the reader to hear the song inside the bruised head of a musician who finds himself without his band, his saxophone and clarinet, without his freedom and even his own sanity, but never without his music. It is a tough tale, but it is softened with a lyrical literary style that makes it flow like the Pacific. I enjoyed it thoroughly, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading about music, adventure and inimitable tragedy.
