Great Inside Look at Anzio and Military Intelligence.......2000-06-13
This is a very aptly titled WWII memoir by a former U.S. intelligence officer. Aptly titled because it could certainly have used a little more rigorous editor to eliminate the numerous repetitions and help the narrative flow a little better. That aside, Marshall's memoir is valuable if nothing else for its ground-level description of Anzio--which I had always heard of but never really knew anything about--and the inside look into "order of battle" and "document exploitation." Both are elements of military intelligence whose importance is largely unknown to the general public and Marshall does an excellent job in explaining and showing how it all works. Less important but also interesting are the day to day details of an army on the move from the invasion of Italy all the way into Germany.

"A Ramble Through My War" is an insightful account of portions of World War II's European Theater through the eyes of a then-young U.S. Army lieutenant. A highlight of this engaging memoir is an inspiring account of the battle for Anzio--its trials and tribulations. It is unfortunate that Charles F. Marshall, a retired business executive, waited until now--55 years since Anzio--to publish this vivid recollection. Today, there are too few former WWII veterans remaining to appreciate this story and too few others who realize how important Anzio and Alsace were to the total scenario of the war in Europe. A Columbia University educated would-be journalist who later settled for a career in the knitting industry, Marshall used a daily diary maintained through most of "his war" to help chronicle the events viewed from his assignment as an army intelligence officer. Although he missed the Anzio landing, Marshall was at the beachhead from early February 1944, through the terror of German counterattacks against Allied troops with their backs against the sea until the breakout in late May and the run to Rome. Much of his G-2 work involved scouring over captured German documents taken from fallen soldiers. "Most German boys carried enough documentation to write their biographies," he explained. Wallet items included birth certificates, baprismal certificates, diaries, driving licenses, personal letters, family photographs and pictures, often nude photos of wives or girlfriends, "stimulating reminders of the joys awaiting their return," Marshall wrote. From these items he and his colleagues amassed amazing bits of information, "a significant contribution to the battle to undo Hitler," Marshall said. In his narrative he interwove the horrors of war with amusing and perceptive commentaries--often blunt, but necessary to the story. After the Allied victory in Italy, Marshall and his intelligence team moved to the invasion of southern France, on to Alsace, later chasing retreating soldiers of the Reich into mother Germany and finally into Austria. Marshall, in his frequent day-to-day accounts, provides details of the U.S. intelligence operation and how the newly gained information helped in coming battles and air attacks. In the closing days of the war and afterwards, Marshall interrogated as host of Germany Prisoner's of war and other German officials, including Lucie Marie, the widow of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. His recovery of Rommel's letters added much to that story of the war. This book was so enjoyable that I searched for Marshall's earlier war volume, "Discovering the Rommel Murder: The Life and Death of the Dessert Fox" published in 1994. It was found still in print and has been ordered.

I have two jobs and I travel 3 to 5 hours a day for work. Oh, yes I am "On the Run". The Author gives some GREAT insight into making small yet very powerful changes to help me make better food choices. I am very glad I have her book and I would recommend it to anyone else who does not like to cook, is always on the run and has very little time to dedicate to meal preparation. The Author hits a Home-Run... She did not get 5 out of 5 because that would mean the book was perfect and come on what book or anything is truly perfect? Great Job ! ! !
Outstanding resource!.......2007-03-09
As a person who finds it hard to fit in meals between appointments, I found this book to be an outstanding nutritional resource. Tribole really packs this book with helpful comparison charts, such as comparisons of energy bars (please expand!), best bets in frozen cuisine, and brand-name snacks. The "one-minute specials" recipes, grocery shopping tips, and fast-food best bet chart were also extremely welcome. There is a section for weight-loss too, though it doesn't take over the book, which is broad in scope for all readers to enjoy. In fact, this is the most practical book on nutrition for busy people with real lives that I have seen. I highly recommend it.

I rarely recommend a book, but I'm feeling that I must now! The book is called Eating on the Run by Evelyn Tribole. This book brings weight management down to its barebones--you learn what your body needs as basic nutrition, how to eat and feel satisfied, the problems with diets and vitamins and how they can hurt you, dispels myths, and how to apply good eating habits efficiently w/o trading taste or satisfaction. You know me, I LOOOOOVE food but I'm just not much of a cook. And like everyone else, I'm just trying to figure out how to take care of my body.
This isn't a cookbook, but there are several recipes throughout the book--many and enough to have you up and going with good eating habits. Since it is geared to busy people, it's an easy, straightforward read that really helps you to understand weight management and how to apply it. In other books, I usually learn a lot then forget it because it just isn't realistic.
The author has a regular column (Recipe Makeover) in Shape magazine, is the spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, and qualified for the 1984 Olympic marathon event. Therefore, she has the credentials.
So, in my most sincerist verve, I totally recommend reading this book as a way to change eating habits and understand weight management for yourself.

Just read the Syndrome X book and found this to be an invaluable nutritional source for those professionals on the go who care about their health.

A VERY nice collection of recipes that are fun and easy to cook (to say nothing of the tasty results!). I have never regretted that I bought this book. It's my most used book on the kitchen bookshelf!
Our family's favourites are the meat dishes. Linda Fraser gives a good variety of meats to use: lamb, beef, pork, chicken, duck. So far, we have not been disappointed in any recipe (and we bought the book in 2000).
Highly recommended if you like Indian cuisine, but do not feel like an expert in Indian cooking. All spices used in this book's recipes are easily available in grocery stores.
A great introduction to Indian cooking........2003-01-05

This installment, the Book of Curries and Indian Foods, presents recipe suggestions for all major courses, from meat dishes to pickles, accompaniments, breads and drinks. Special chapters are dedicated to poultry, vegetable dishes, fish and shellfish, and desserts. This colorful indian cookbook has photos of every recipe with simple directions. A lot of basic recipes for spice mixes & coconut milk, chapati, naan, other breads are this book along with a section at the beginning explaining cultural influences. There are tasty desserts like "Cashew Nut Fudge," "Pistachio Halva," along with wonderfully refreshing drinks "Lime & Mint Drink," "Indian Summer Punch," and more! Tasty main dish recipes for "Creamy Saffron Fish Curry," "Lemon & Coriander Chicken," "Coriander Leaf Chutney" and lots more. One comment I will make is that most of the main dishes are meat or seafood so if you are a strict vegetarian this may not be the right cookbook for you. It's a good basics cookbook for someone not familiar with how to make indian foods.
Inspirational and Delicious.......2000-04-04
Terrific recipes. This is a fun and tasty introduction to Indian cookery! I've tried about 25 of the recipes with excellent results. The steps are clearly illustrated, easy to follow, and produce dishes that look like the picture, smell wonderful, and taste great.

A wonderful resource and idea book.......2002-11-29
This beautiful book is full of colour photos that show hundreds of examples of bead types and styles and describes their origins. A whole section is devoted to projects appropriate to each style and the how-to instructions are easy to follow. The only problem is the book doesn't include a bag of beads once you get your appetite whetted! For the beginner and more experienced beader, this is a lovely reference guide and worth the money.

This bead book is like an encyclopedia and gallery in one. I love looking through its wonderful photos of beads and jewelry, and it has added to my store of techniques and design ideas. A large section is dedicated to close-up photos of many types of beads with references to their history and cultural background. It makes me more knowledgeable about what I'm getting when I shop for beads.
The next section has a wonderful display of jewelry, mostly necklaces and earrings, in all kinds of styles, materials, colors -- from light and delicate to chunky and bold. I've gotten a lot of ideas from these to copy or create my own designs.
A section at the end explains various jewelry-making techniques with closeup photos and adequate written instructions. I think just a little prior experience would be helpful in following these fairly simple techniques. There are a couple more pages that clearly show a few methods for sewing beads onto fabric. This is a bead book I will keep returning to for browsing and inspiration.

The information and the photography in this book is really wonderful. I refer to it time and again for information on particular beads or just to look at the wonderful pictures of beads. I love to collect beads and use them in designs. It is always enjoyable to me to just peruse this book. I would recommend it to anyone that is interested in beads,or just for information and ideas.

Trying to figure out the name and history behind your most recent flea-market-find beads? Chances are the answers are in this slim, easy-to-overlook book. I've been making bead jewelry for more years than I like to admit, yet I learn something new every time I open this book. All the full-page photographs come with plenty of FYI factoids about beads, which are catagorized by type and color. I've used it to identify everything from rudraksha nuts used in Hindu prayer beads, and batik beads from Kenya, to the Italian name for my favorite African trade beads. The book isn't big on instructions. But if you are looking for ideas or inspiration, it is a wonderfully informative guide.

A first class reference book for art with kids........2002-07-29
This book is an excellent reference for a beginner or experienced art facilitator. (The introduction explains how to be an art "facilitator" rather than teacher, by providing the materials and opportunity for children to discover art hands-on, though practice and experience.) It is wonderful guide to the basic methods of collage, drawing, painting, clay and construction techniques, as well as more specialized projects, such as paper mache puppets, making "molas" or weaving. The author learned to perfect these projects through many years of experience with her Summertime Arts and Crafts Workshop. Many black and white illustrations and some line drawings help illuminate the techniques and reveal the end products of childrens' art. I like the page spread of photos showing childrens' many variations on the paper mache puppet. This is one of my favorite art reference books.

Tony Williams does the world of film study an amazing service with this book, covering Larry Cohen's work as writer/director/producer with an infectious enthusiasm. The interviews (with Cohen, as well as cast and crew from his films) are particularly enlightening: Actor Michael Moriarty insisting that a film retrospective of his work include Cohen's "Q: The Winged Serpent," which he considers one of his best performances; Cohen describing his tactics of "guerilla filmmaking," in one case filming Eric Roberts and Janine Turner amidst a sea of oblivious New Yorkers during a frenzied lunch hour by hiding the camera and crew across the street. This book is full of priceless information, as well as Williams' perceptive observations and analysis on the whole of Cohen's creative output.

This translation is a companion volume to other Grub Street titles such as Aces High and Stars and Bars. It is and indispensable reference for the serious research student and historian. Ikuhiko Hata is a past Fellow of the Woodrow Wilson Center and presently Professor of History at Nihon University. His previous works include A History of the Japanese-Chinese War, 1931-1941. Yasuho Izawa is an Opthalmic Optician whose past works include Japanese Naval Aces and Fighter Units (with Professor Hata) and Bloody Shambles Vols 1 and 2 (with Christopher Shores).

The careful translation of the original text into a more nicely-flowing English; the influence of the master historian, Chris Shores; the decision to publish by the renowned Grub Street Press: this should be a much better book than the volume detailing the naval fighter units of Japan by the same authors.
But it's not.
If you spend the better part of forty dollars hoping for a book that is more like Mr. Shores' "Bloody Shambles", Mr. Ford's "Flying Tigers", or even Mr. Bergerud's "Fire in the Sky", then you'll be sorry.

This handsome, detailed book lifts the curtain on the Japanese army units that fought in China, Southeast Asia, and the home islands during World War II. It's based on a Japanese-language text by a noted historian and an aviation buff, and rendered into workable English by the British historian Christopher Shores. The result is a much more accessible book than the earlier one by the same Japanese authors about the larger Japanese navy air force. There are many photos, side-views of JAAF fighters, accounts of the major campaigns, biographies of the aces (happily arranged in alphabetical order so you can quickly look them up), and an appendix listing every major air combat and every JAAF pilot lost in 15 years of war. A solid book that belongs in the library of every serious student of the Pacific War. -- Dan Ford
