Fasinating study of Anderson's pseudo-Marxism.......2002-07-02

This is a fascinating account of the intellectual career of Perry Anderson, long-time editor of the New Left Review and cofounder of New Left Books. But in giving such a full survey, Elliott, probably unintentionally, exposes Anderson as arrogant, dogmatic and, practically, useless.

For a Marxist, an understanding of class is basic. What is Anderson's idea of the working class? He assumes it is just the manual workers, not seeing that as capitalism has developed, it has needed growing numbers of white-collar workers to keep it going. Elliott explains, "Given that the proletariat was a social minority in most capitalist countries ... ."

This wrong premise, never argued, made room for the notion that this small weak working class needed a separate `socialist intelligentsia'. Its members were, according to Anderson, the `sources of consciousness in society' - workers are not even conscious! He concluded that the "party ... must include intellectuals and petit bourgeois who alone can provide the essential theory of socialism." Workers need the `petit bourgeois' to teach them socialism!

How do we turn a minority revolutionary movement into a mass revolutionary movement? Anderson claims that only the development of revolutionary theory can move the class towards revolution, but that the absence of a mass movement prevents the emergence of this theory - an impasse. He adheres to Trotskyism, writing smugly in 1976, "the tradition descended from Trotsky ... filled no chairs in universities" - ironic now that he is Professor of History at the University of California.

Anderson believes that progress for Britain can only come from abroad - earlier, from Euro-Marxism, more recently, from the European Union. As he wrote in 1992, "a major task of the Left will be to press towards the completion of a genuine federal state in the Community, with a sovereign authority over its constituent parts."

Anderson's ideas are the polar opposite of what Marxism should be: he is unrooted in, and hostile to, our trade union movement and to the British nation. We need workers' nationalism, not abstract internationalism.

This book is OUTSTANDING! I am so convinced by the program in this book that I tell everyone I know that has back problems about it. I bought one for my sister. I bought it because of past back problems and more recent because of my knees, which have all stopped hurting. This book should be called Personalize your fitness program.If you are committed to doing something about back pain or need a fitness program, you should buy this book. It is straightforward, honest and sensible information, everything you heard for years about getting out of pain and or getting FIT. Finally someone writes it where it all makes sense!

This book offers practical exercises that almost anyone can do to strengthen the body and prevent and eliminate back pain. I highly recommend it!

A Waste of Money.......2004-05-12

I bought the Wharton's Stretching book and liked it, finding it very useful as a martial artist. This book, however, merely rehashes everything in the Stretching book, but in an inferior manner. Although it has photos instead of drawings, the Wharton's Stretch book clearly shows acceptable ranges of motion for each stretch. In addition, the Back Book has a section on training with weights that bordered on ridiculous. The author's clearly know little about neither weight training as therapy nor weight training for strength and flexibility. This book was a real disappointment. Buy their first book, avoid this one.

It works, if you work it!.......2004-01-21

If a person with back problems reads and follows the advice in this book, their situation will improve. There is no magic fix for back pain, but the vast majority, regardless of the diagnoses, will be reduced or even eliminated by correcting the imbalances in the hips. This book tells how to do this. The imbalances were developed over many years, so it will take some time to overcome them. If you want a healthier back, this is the answer, provided you are willing to put in the time and effort.

I and my wife are physicians. She suffers from lower back problems. This book contains easy to follow picures and directions for the exercises. I was very pleased to see their balanced (and truthful) comments regarding durgs and alternative therapies. I agree with their advice toseek professional opinions as other diseases can mimick lower back problems.
A well written and illustrated book.

The Food Journal of Lewis and Clark is a remarkable book, part history text and part cook book. The author outlines the trail and some of the main events that the members of the expedition experienced. This information is illustrated with maps and fully annotated with references. Within this information, the author includes food lists and notations that show the types of food that the crew actually ate while making their trek. This information is then used to deduce the types of meals and even the actual recipes that might have been used.

I think that this publication is a fabulous idea that allows people to actually experience a little piece of history. It is one thing to read about new and interesting aspects of history but it is quite another to actually create a dish or a meal in order to actually experience what life might have been like for these individuals. It is no wonder that this book has won all sorts of awards: Winner of the Midwest Independent Publishers Association Book Achievement Awards, 2004 Independent Publisher's Outstanding Book of the Year, and the Benjamin Franklin Award.

A Gem.......2006-09-08

This book's a gem, both history-wise and food-wise (I have another Lewis & Clark cookbook, it pales in comparison on both counts). The history is woven throughout the book in easy-to-swallow bits and bites. The recipes are very do-able, easy even, in home kitchens. I expected some 'weird' ingredients but there are none. Definitely a recommendation for cooks along the Expedition route but interesting for lots of folks, I think.

This book is one of the finest I have seen in a long time. It is a beautiful book - finely organized and elegantly presented. The unique feature of this book is that it not only presents recipes that the Voyage of Discovery used, it also places them in historical context. This is a truly fascinating book and an outstanding value.

We have introduced this book to our Cub Scout Pack and our Boy Scout Troop. It has turned out to be a hit with the boys. They really enjoy trying the different recipes and are excited about reading the history that accompanies their choices. In other words, they are learning and do not realize it because of the fun and enjoyment they are experiencing. That alone should speak volumes about this book.

Much more than a cookbook, Gunderson's book is a history lesson, sharing the words and thoughts of Lewis and Clark and how they managed their journey without the cooking conveniences we depend on today. The recipes are intriguing and easy-to-read and the journal entries make the book come alive. What a wonderful way to learn about Lewis and Clark - through cooking!

As a teacher of U.S. history with a special emphasis on the Lewis and Clark Expedition, I would highly recommend Mary Gunderson's "The Food Journal of Lewis & Clark". One of the most interesting aspects of U.S. history is the type of food eaten by our ancestors. This wonderful book not only shows us what the Corps of Discovery ate, but also how they prepared and enjoyed their meals. Two hundred years later American students are making these meals and learning that this expedition wouldn't have made it without this great food.

HORRIBLE.......2007-03-13

This book is horrible. One of the reviews is for Ivens Veterinary Hospital, the exact hospital that my father owns and runs. The book says that we can board up to 60 animals in our "small" building except they all have to be LESS THAN 20lbs. This is not true. We can board up to 80 animals, and we have stalls big enough for a small horse. The book also says that we refer a lot of our work ups. Which is not true, we take pride in doing almost ALL of our work in-house. Then it says that you need to give us several days notice to make an appointment, that point is crazy. A client can call at 9:00 in the morning and make an appointment at 10:30 in the morning THAT SAME DAY. In responce to the book, we are calling the publisher to complain. DO NOT TRUST ANY OF THIS INFORMATION FROM THIS BOOK.

A must for "Osler Lovers".......2003-04-05

I know three of the medical doctors (All members of the Osler Society) who assembled these choice selections uttered and (mostly) penned by Sir William Osler . . who seems to have felt strongly on only one controversial subject = that men seldom did any worthwhile creative work after age 40 and would do well to be "chloroformed" at age 60. Sir William died at age 70. The term "Internal Medicine" was coined in German-speaking Europe during Sir William's post-graduate training years there and he established the definition of the "specialty" at Johns Hopkins. The "specialty" has now out-lived its usefulness but our reverence for the man who contributed more than any other to the art and science of patient care obviously is being passed along to many young men and women who choose to be REAL PHYSICIANS.

Oshima Hiroshi, Japanese Ambassdor to the Third Reich, and its impact on the outcome of WWII. According to Boyd, these decoded diplomatic messages, known in the U.S. and Great Britain as MAGIC, were pivotal in Allied decision-making at critical junctures during the war. The author contends that, because the British were unable to read the secret communications of the top Nazi leadership, MAGIC filled a crucial gap in British ULTRA message decoding efforts. According to Boyd, Oshima was covertly converted into "an inadvertent informer of incalculable importance in leading the Allies to victory." Because Oshima had a very close personal relationship with Hitler and foreign minister von Ribbentropp, had their trust and respect, and had access to their higest level secrets, his MAGIC decoded radio messages were especially revealing and valuable for Allied planners. His military experience and analytical abilities also made his detailed characterizations of the disposition and condition of German forces in Europe and on the eastern front especially enlightening to the Allies and critical to planning for Operation OVERLORD. Boyd observes that "The margin of success on the Normandy beaches was narrow, but MAGIC and Anglo-American cooperation made the difference." Boyd's book is the first detailed account of Oshima's role as a primary source of Allied wartime intelligence through MAGIC. He draws heavily on declassified National Security Agency documents recently released to the National Archives. There is more, however, to this story of decoding covertly collected enemy radio intercepts that remains classified, especially in the British archives, which won't be declassified for more than twenty years. This is a thoroughly documented, superbly written, and rich account of the application of communications intelligence during WWII. It should be a stimulating read for all serious WWII historians and an entertaining read for all others.
