Not The Place To Start.......2002-03-13
Though Drukpa is a beloved saint of many Himalayans, this is certainly not the first book to read if you're interested in Tibetan Buddhism or culture. In fact, without a grasp of Tantric principles and the way skillful means can be used in a way seen as legitimate by this tradition, many of the events in this book would be received as downright distastful and suspect. I had run across references to him in a number of other works over the years, and am frankly glad I waited until this later point in my understanding of Buddhism before reading this work. Otherwise, I doubt I could have seen through a lot of the cultural chaff, which many would find offensive, to the core insights that the text is trying to promote. Read it sometime, but don't rush to it before you're ready.
Maybe "the other Buddhism".......2001-03-29
I read this book via a borrowed first edition, in one mesmerized sitting. 2nd ed. should be same. Now I must own it as soon as re-published! A fabulous story of the Buddhist monk whose left-hand path will scandalize some and delight others. I visited Drukpa Kunley's monastery in Bhutan and received the resident head monk's blessing with both the wooden phallus and the ivory one. Kunley created Bhutan's national animal, the Takin, and spread both his generous organ's output and the Dharma over the Himalaya. Worshiped by all women he met, he conquered Bon magicians and otherwise gave Buddhism a full-bodied life. Must reading for all adults. Now, I want to make a film about his life...join me? k4vud@hotmail.com

Useful Guide to Herbal Remedies.......2006-08-30
The book is divided into five sections. It's extremely thorough
How to Use Herbs explains herb use in different parts of the world. It lists types of plants used in remedies. Then it reviews the effects of different herbs on the nervous system, cardiovascular, digestive, urinary, etc. It lists sources of herbs (root, bark, leaf, flower, oils, etc.) It tells forms that herbs are taken in (infusions, decoctions, capsules, tinctures, glycerates, syrups, etc.)
The second part of the book reviews Body Systems and types of herbs used for different conditions. A diagram of the human body shows what area certain herbs are used for and gives a page for more details on each. For instance it lists 11 herbs used for PMS.
The third section has the A-Z Herbal Prescriber. Look up the conditon by name (ADHD, colitus, cough, etc.).
Part four covers Herbal Sources, Dosage & Safety.
Part five contains Herbal Resources (addresses and a bibliography) & the Index.
An essential reference for any herbalist.......2005-10-27
** A mirror image of his homeopathic book, which I also recommend**
Asa Hershoff, ND, is a naturopathic physician, chiropractor and homeopath who also uses herbal remedies. What a resume :) He also owns and runs an actual practice, which is a refreshing change for an author of natural healing. Andrea Rotelli, ND, is also a naturopath who uses flower essenses, herbalism and medical astrology. The qualified mixture here holds promise.
This book is more of a reference manual than anything else, so never buy it expecting more than that or you will be dissapointed. It is not an 'herbal', as no herbs are given in detail. It also has absolutely ZERO formulas, remedies, recipes, or combinations. Again, it's a reference - and an excellent one at that.
The first section on How to Use Herbs was fascinating as, although it was short and sweet, the authors go over the history of herbs in different parts of the world, from Global to Asian to Indian, to North American. The history of medicine is always fascinating and enough detail is given here to provide fuel for more learning in other sources. He also includes some small sections of plant constituents, much like Hoffman does in his illustrated holistic herbal.
A different thing about this book is that it's followed by the effects various herbs have, but on the systems, which is how this book is categorized. There are several interesting points brought up in the how to use herbs section, as well as history and info, and all done from an actual healers standpoint, not overly cautious and theoretical, but with enthusiasm and belief. A nice change.
The next is the heart of the book. Each body system is divided, with drawings by Asa, and then the conditions are in alphabetical order.
Frankly the organization IS a bit confusing (you'll see what I mean when you need something and it's not just alphabetical order), but it's doable. Each condition is introduced with a brief note on cause and conditions, and an overview of treatment needed (not just herbal) After this herbs are listed, with 3 - 4 lines under the herb name. On each line is a different point on why this herb should be used, pretty nifty. By each herb name are stars, one being a recommended herb but with a weak effect, and the larger number (guessing five) showing how strongly it affects.
It ends with a brief wrap up of herbs covered.
Overall this is meant to be a quick reference guide and doesn't try to claim itself as anything else. It's good for a cinch, and I always turn here for conditions, along with other herbs. FOr one thing it almost always seems to mention an herb other sources don't , or bring up a reason for usage others don't. It stands out from the crowd because of this, and because of this reason is why I also regard it so highly.
If you're in need of a good reference, here's one to get.
Concise and to the point!.......2003-10-05
This book is a great quick reference for the layman and clinician alike. The material is organized well with plenty of references and scientifically based uses. I use this little gem when I am in a hurry and need something quick, concise, accurate and to the point. This book is definitely worth having around. I will never get rid of my copy.

Great For Beginners and experienced herbalist.......2001-11-15
When I came across this book (...), I had to buy it. Now It is my favorite among the dozen herbal reference books on my shelf. In fact, currently it is lent out to a friend who is wanting to learn about herbs for treating common illness. This book is the well rounded and written by two ND's (Naturopathic Doctors)
Stimulating...Vital....Erudite.......2001-08-14
Drs. Hershoff and Rotelli's Herbal Remedies text is a fascinating journey to the multidimensional world of plants and how they may be used medicinally. The delivery of fascinating information presented in this 300-some odd page book is liken to sitting spell-bound in the midst of ancient medicine men and futuristic scientists. Dr. Hershoff's background as award-winning best-loved professor shows with the user-friendly organization. I make use of this book as a quick and thorough reference and also as a compelling novel. EXCELLENT!

As host of her own Lifetime TV show, Katie Brown provides easy and affordable advice on casual entertaining. Her Katie Brown Entertains offers readers 16 menus for as many occasions, plus table décor and other party projects, including invitations, centerpieces, and favors. Thus, for example, Lone Star: A Fourth of July Celebration offers easy recipes for such dishes as Skillet Corn Bread with Jalapeño and Pecans, plus instructions for projects like branded wooden place mats and napkin rings with a Stars and Stripes motif. Readers who enjoy craftwork in the service of homey entertaining plus basic yet winning recipes should welcome the book.
Events are themed and include, in addition to the above, Kitchen Garden Lunch for Four, Book Club Dinner, and It's All About You: A Birthday Dinner for Six. Projects range from the simple, such as Spoon Soap Place Cards--you write guests names on wooden spoons and tie them to Mason jars containing glycerin soap--to the more ambitious, such as Stamp It, for which readers create rubber stamps (from computer mousepads) to decorate the sides of the dining table. If Brown's recipes confusingly list ingredients before giving quantities needed (as in, "celery: 1-1/2 cups, diced 1/2 inch"), instructions for both the dishes and the projects are clear and easy to follow. With anecdotal introductions to the projects and fully photo-illustrated features, the book should keep many hands busy and many guests happy with the work and food produced. --Arthur Boehm

A favorite book of mine.......2006-02-05
This is a must have book. I have used it many times and I highly recommend it. I think she has Martha Stewart beat by a longshot.
This is a book I won't lend out for fear of it not being returned to me.
Girl Next Door.......2003-08-18
I watched Katie Brown's show every day and even taped her show and begin a library of my own to share with my family. She shows you how to take the simplest things around your house and create the most unusual decorations. Everything I have ever made was complimented on and I always told every one about Katie. So many women wish that Lifetime would re-run her shows, especially with the holidays coming.....I think she's great..and you don't need to be rich to afford warmth, elegance and spirit into your home..SHE'S THE BEST

Pleasant reading and good ideas.......2003-06-09
I think that Katie Brown is way better than Martha Stewart ever will be. Katie's ideas are actually her own. They aren't pretntious. I have made the lemon square recipe many time and they are always the first sweet to go.
Ummm, who's going to do this?.......2003-01-25
All I have to say is who is going put together these decorations? If you come over to my house for a party, don't worry about having to eat on sod place mats, it just won't happen. I would never put in this much effort to decorate for a dinner party. I was so turned off by the goofy-themed party ideas, I didn't even read any of the recipes - they might be good, I just couldn't handle looking at this book any longer.
Cookie Cutter Designs.......2002-05-09
If you want to recreate one of the party themes featured in her book, then this is the book for you. However, if you want to learn more about creating your own themes and ideas, get another book. I saw Katie Brown on Oprah today, and she came across as very professional and creative. I was hoping her book would have the same creativeness and would be full of ideas as well, but I was mistaken. Her book lays out 16 plans for specific parties, and gives no real information on what she was thinking as she planned them, ideas for future parties, and the like. I was lucky enough to browse the book before I bought it, and it seemed like the majority of the book was recipes, and instructions, as well as anecdotes about herself. I would not recommend this book to buy, it is not worth the $25-$35 you would put into purchasing it, unless you plan to use every design in the book, or you already know how to entertain and want a few new ideas. The book doesn't teach you about entertaining, it only give you a few entertainment ideas.

Wonderful Ideas.......2006-05-04
I found this book to be extremely useful. The techniques were all new to me. The one that I am going to try first is the wax resist. I am a little worried about the other techniques that use solvents - I don't know where to buy them, and I don't want anything unnatural that is going to hurt my body. Overall, this is a lovely book. One department that does need a little bit of expansion is making the journal itself. However, I already have a blank journal that I bought from a bookstore beginning with Bor (they offer great blank journals CHEAP) and I am just going to use the techniques. Cheers!!
journal making?.......2005-05-13
I bought this book wanting to learn how to make a journal. This book did not show the basics. It was a waste of money, the author seemed more interested in presenting cute ideas and making pretty pictures than teaching basics.
Creative and Inspiring.......2003-08-11
I loved this book, but when I got "Making Memory Books and Journals by Hand" I was surprised to find "Making Journals by Hand" is actually included in that text in full: word for word, page for page, project for project .
Instead of buying "Making Journals by Hand" and "Making Memory Boxes", save some money and buy one book: "Making Memory Books and Journals by Hand". This book combines all of the projects above and then some.
All of these books have great projects and instructions.
expansive techniques, but the art is up to us ý.......2003-04-10
This luscious book peeks into the art journals of many talented artists, giving step-by-step instructions on basic techniques for compiling and binding journals that mix image and word. Because the contributors are all highly talented artists, this book should have been more intimidating to my non-artist self than it was. Instead, it is encouraging and freeing, and the author provides short helpful tips on the process of writing a journal along with illustration and decoration. I read the book in two addictive sittings and am looking forward to spending more time with it, and with the books and websites listed in the bibliography, even if I never try any of the techniques. Thank you, Jason, for a generous, empowering, and visually stunning book.
Skimps on Content.......2003-02-23
While the journals in here were really beautiful, it doesn't look like the author put a lot of effort into explaining them. It only took me about an hour to read this book and, even with a few creative ideas(mostly from the pictures), the general content was sparse. Some of the shaded sections on the side looked like space filler (for example, one on "themes" describes a travel journal's purpose as "chronicling your travels"...no way!). It bothers me when writers use pretty pictures to try and pull off the appearance of a quality book. Flip through this book in the library to get some good ideas, but don't expect thoughtful written advice.

Getaways for physical and spiritual renewal don't have to involve distance or expense; they can happen right at home with a well-planned garden that utilizes water in a special way. Placing a pool, fountain, or stream in an existing outdoor environment can be daunting but need not involve massive cost or a complete redesign. In SOMA Basics: Water Features, David Stevens shows readers how to add striking water features to their yards - from spouting shells to soothing ponds - while keeping the mechanics invisible. Using the same colorful, compact format as SOMA Basics: Garden Design, this book covers style, structures, materials, and methods. Full-color photos, matched with professional plans and illustrations, go from concept to completion using the latest designs and technology.

Comforting and superbly written for parents.......1999-07-25
This small pamphlet contains a wealth of comfort and information for parents of abused children. In particular, this book addresses abused children who have begun acting out sexually with other children. The authors delineate criteria for differentiating developmentally expected sex play and problematic sexual behavior in children. Practical suggestions to assist parents in helping their children, and to alleviate the parents' anxiety, are worth their weight in gold. I highly recommend this book to professionals working with abused children and to parents who are struggling to understand how to respond to their child's problems.

Book Description
In this close look at the first relocation camp built for Japanese evacuees living on the West Coast after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, social historian Michael Cooper makes extensive use of the actual wordsfrom diaries, journals, memoirs, and news accountsof the people who were held behind barbed wire in the high California desert. Many were American citizens who felt betrayed by their country. They had to leave their jobs, their homes, and their friends and go live in crowded barracks, eat in noisy mess halls, and do without supplies or books for work or schooling. They showed remarkable bravery and resilience as they tried to lead normal lives, starting their own schools, playing baseball, attending Saturday night dances, and publishing their own newspaper. Archival photographs, some by Ansel Adams and Dorothea Lange, augment the informative text. Manzanar is now a National Historic Site and hosts an annual pilgrimage that is attended by former internees, their families, and friends. Endnotes, Internet resources, index.
Customer Reviews:
Great!!!.......2003-01-26
I recently began a paper dealing with a civil rights topic. While researching, I became interested in the Japanese internment of the 1940's. Although much can be learned about the internment from articles and other books, the pictures in this book are "worth 1,000 words." They photographs give a clear understanding of what life in the camps must have been like. I highly reccomend this book to history buffs, photography buffs, and those interested in civil rights issues.
Enjoy
