One Young Man's Wartime Ordeal.......2001-05-02
During WWII, Kyle Thompson survived six years of military service in Asia, four of them as a prisoner of war with the "Lost Battalion." As a sixteen-year-old, he enlisted in the Texas National Guard at Wichita Falls, and was inducted into the U. S. Army following mobilization of the U. S. Forces in 1940. The 2d Battalion of the 131st Field Artillery, destined for the Philippines, diverted to Australia when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. From there they went to Java to aid the Dutch in holding the Dutch East Indies. When the Dutch surrendered Java to the Japanese, the captured men took a lengthy and uncomfortable voyage by rail and sea, ending up in Thailand. The Japanese objective was control of India, and for that they needed an overland connection across Southeast Asia through Thailand and Burma. Prior to the war, the British had abandoned plans to build a railroad across that forbidding terrain, but the Japanese tackled thejob with prisoners of war and workers captured in countries they had overrun as WWII began. The public has heard of that railway in the story and movie, The Bridge Over the River Kwai, one part of the same railway. Mr. Thompson tells of the good times of which there were few and the bad of which there were many. He praises the comraderie of the men that helped offset the cruelty of their captors. He describes the miserable living conditions lacking in even a minimum of food, clothing, and shelter. He speaks of the long hours of back breaking labor and nights made sleepless by heat and insects. He tells how the men kept their courage up by listening to a forbidden radio ingeniously rigged to bring in news of help on the way. He communicates the joy of final liberation of the men who remained, and he lists in the book the names of the many who died of tropical diseases, neglect, and malnutrition. The book strikes at the heart of any American conscious of the debt owed to courageous men such as Mr. Thompson who endured so much to ensure freedom for all. It reminds us of the need to review th story,to remember the heroic deeds, to express gratitude for the wartime service of this great generation.
story of POW's 3 years saga & how belief in God got him thru.......1998-08-13
This story is about a young man from the Texas National Guard who gets captured by the Japanese. He is one of the few Americans who toiled long hard hours along side British soldiers constructing a railroad thru Burma. The movie Bridge on the River Kwai is a ficticious account of this terrible ordeal. Mr Thompson tells how his faith in God got him thru those grueling times with only " a thousand cups of rice " to eat.
Book Description
The Renaissance philosopher Giordano Bruno was a notable supporter of the new science that arose during his lifetime; his role in its development has been debated ever since the early seventeenth century. Hilary Gatti here reevaluates Bruno's contribution to the scientific revolution, in the process challenging the view that now dominates Bruno criticism among English-language scholars. This argument, associated with the work of Frances Yates, holds that early modern science was impregnated with and shaped by Hermetic and occult traditions, and has led scholars to view Bruno primarily as a magus.
Gatti reinstates Bruno as a scientific thinker and occasional investigator of considerable significance and power whose work participates in the excitement aroused by the new science and its methods at the end of the sixteenth century. Her original research emphasizes the importance of Bruno's links to the magnetic philosophers, from Ficino to Gilbert; Bruno's reading and extension of Copernicus's work on the motions of the earth; the importance of Bruno's mathematics; and his work on the art of memory seen as a picture logic, which she examines in the light of the crises of visualization in present-day science. She concludes by emphasizing Bruno's ethics of scientific discovery.

Building on the concepts put forth in their bestselling book Raising Resilient Children, leading child psychologists Robert Brooks and Sam Goldstein follow up with this troubleshooting manual on the topic. The book assumes that readers are already familiar with their 10 essential parenting guideposts to nurturing resilience and launches into a detailed Q&A format that further explains how to communicate and show parental love effectively and how to foster self-discipline, self-worth, compassion, and competence in our children.
Based on real queries put forth by parents, educators, and professionals, the Q&A in Nurturing Resilience explains how parents can best help their children cope with specific adversities and serves as a reinforcement to get parents back on track when they feel that their efforts toward building resilience are backfiring. Among other topics, the discussion addresses how to teach children to be responsible without provoking a negative reaction, how to guide them to cope with frustrations and challenges without coddling or criticizing them, and how to promote compassion by modeling good interpersonal skills as parents. A helpful chapter on the parent-teacher alliance covers questions on how parents should tackle concerns with school problems and work with their school to find a solution. A checklist on positive homework skills and parenting homework practices lets parents know where there's room for improvement. The concluding chapter features a transcript of an interview with Todd Rose, one of the doctors' success stories of the resilience "program." This is a valuable supplement to Brooks and Goldstein's original text and gives helpful guidance in the tough job of raising children in a challenging and ever-changing world. --Cristina Vaamonde

Love this cookbook.......2007-04-08
This has a great variety of recipies and each has nutrition information. Recipies grouped into traditional sections like pasta, chicken & turkey, beef, fish & seafood etc. but each section is organized into the following catagories easy, 30 minute, 60 minute, microwave, low-fat, make ahead, one pot and classic. There are definitions for each catagory at the beginning of the book.
Each individual recipe has all the information you need to decide if you want to make it. Recipe catagories then name how many it Serves, Prep Time, cook time ingredients directions then nutritional information per serving calroies, protien, carbs, gat, cholesterol and sodium. All the information you need to achieve a balanced diet.
There are also many color pictures. The best thing about this book is (p657 -671) the section entitled A Year of Menus. My mom liked cooking but hated the pressure of deciding what to cook for dinner; this is a terrific feature and even if you don't like the menu for each day at least you have something to alter to your likes or dislikes.
My mom had a Woman's Home Companion Cookbook it was a great cookbook and reference this is a great all around cookbook and the nutrition information plus the menus make this a must have for any home cook.
useful variety .......2005-08-30
This cookbook offers challenges for the cook, as well as encouragement for the reluctant cook and refreshment for the cook in a corner. I have appreciated the nutrition information especially, as we struggle to control calories, and the extra commentaries help make me a more knowledgeable cook. I like the philosophical viewpoint of this cookbook, that there is not always time and money to cook every bite from scratch. Judicious use of convenience foods works well for health of the cook as well as the others at the table. Even though it is not hot off the press any more, it is a valuable book in my kitchen with helpful tips and an excellent index.
May be the best all-purpose cookbook on the market today........2005-03-26
As a general cookbook, this one is hard to beat. Geared to the needs of a wide spectrum of users, the book has a huge variety of well-seasoned recipes reflecting many different kinds of ethnic cookery. Each recipe carries a stated range of difficulty from complex to simple, a complete guide to preparation, and an introductory note describing interesting facts about the recipe or its ingredients, the amount of preparation time, and the amount of cooking time.
Divided into the usual sections--such as Grains and Beans, Desserts, Chicken and Turkey--this cookbook has an unusual feature that will delight the busiest cook. At the front of each section is a complete list of the recipes in that section, with individual recipes classified as Easy, 30 Minutes, 60 Minutes, Microwave, Make Ahead, Low Fat, One Pot, and Classic. If a recipe falls into more than one category, it is listed more than once, so that someone looking for Coq au Vin, listed here as Chicken in Red Wine, a classic recipe, will find it under Classics, but also in the Easy, Lowfat, and One Pot categories.
Long boxes on each page, adjacent to the binding, offer helpful tips for cooking, recipe variations, microwave adaptations, and useful trivia (the number of shrimp per pound, depending on size, how to carve a roast, how to get perfectly rounded muffins, for example). Several longer inserts, almost a page long, appear in green boxes and offer the "how-to's" of basic cooking--everything from grilling vegetables to making perfect pie crusts.
The most helpful feature for those who are health-conscious or on special diets is that every recipe provides the counts of calories, carbs, protein grams, fat grams, cholesterol, and sodium, taking the guesswork completely out of planning healthy, nutritious, good-tasting meals. Sections at the end of the book provide menus for a year, special recipes for entertaining and celebrations, and information on herbs, cheeses, and wines.
I initially selected this cookbook to give at a bridal shower, but when I had a chance to get it home and really look at it carefully, I bought a copy for myself. I had used and enjoyed the Joy of Cooking and the Fanny Farmer Cooking School Cookbook for years, but I have now found that this newer cookbook offers so many more features that I use it nearly all the time, in preference to my old standbys. The recipes, very well seasoned, are terrific--I haven't found a single dud!--and I now have many new favorites with fewer calories and fat grams! Recommended without reservation. Mary Whipple
Women's Day Cookbook.......2000-02-04
This is the best (and I mean best) cookbook on the market today. There are few "fancy" ingredients and 99% of the recipes can be made with what you have on hand. If you don't have something, it's easy to substitute. Need something elegant, look here. No nonsense, easy to use, and better yet, great recipes!
Added to my private library.......1998-03-23
I checked this book out of the public Library and liked it so much after using it for several soups, I decided I needed it for many other reasons, such as the investment cooking section. I never thought I would need another cook book, but I just couldn"t pass "The Woman"s Day Cookbook.

creative gardening.......2007-01-11
These is one of the most beautiful gardening books I own. The combinations of flowers used are very creative and inspiring. Alot of the pictures are watercolors and some are photos. Good info on flowers and shrubs. Any one just getting started with a garden can use this book and any seasoned gardener must have this book.
great book........2003-07-20
This book is nearly 400 pages, and is CHOCK FULL of color photographs (and color drawings in some places). The sections are broken into "Annuals and Biennial", "Perennials", "Climbing Plants", "Shrubs", Trees, Roses, Water Garden Plants, Rock Garden Plants, and Bulbs Corms & Tubers. Each plant has a description of its appearance, preferences, and how to grow it.
There is an index listing plants by special purpose "with aromatic foliage", "with fragrant flowers", "for cut flowers", "winter interest", etc. Also a chart that lists plants by their preferences for soil, sunlight, size, etc.
Despite the title, this book doesn't cover the "creative" part... there's nothing about how to be creative with your garden. However, the book's focus is on describing the types of plants you'd have in a creative garden.
Book Description
For the millions of couples who face divorce each year, The Smart Divorce offers an alternative to court without giving up getting what you want
Research reveals that how a couple conducts themselves during a divorce has far greater impact on their children than the divorce itself. Compassionate, clear, and comprehensive, The Smart Divorce is the first trade book to introduce a dignified, highly strategic solution to divorce-the collaborative process, a nationally acclaimed approach that is fast transforming how couples dissolve their marriages, divide their assets, and reinvent their post divorce relationships, particularly when they share custody of their children.
Based on the central tenet that both participants agree to resolve their differences with no intention of ever going to court, the collaborative process focuses on finding common interests while allowing each person in the couple to hire active legal representation. Stressing cooperation over confrontation and resolution over revenge, the smart divorce is beneficial in that it is generally less expensive and quicker than litigation, gives the couple greater control over the outcome of their divorce, and keeps children out of the controversy.
Guiding readers through the steps of the collaborative process so that they may make better, more informed decisions, The Smart Divorce isn't about "going easy" on your spouse. It's about ending up with more money, less stress, and happier kids without going to court.
Customer Reviews:
User friendly book for non lawyers.......2007-03-19
This book gives a straight easy to follow explanation of what to expect in the collaboarative process. The book guides you through the process step by step and includes helpful questionnaires to see if this is a good fit for your divorce. Lots of useful and insightful material in the Appendix. I would highly recommend to anyone, including lawyers, who wants to get a feel for how the collaborative model might be better than a traditional divorce. I practice in the area, and recommend this book to my clients.
The Healthiest Way to Divorce.......2007-01-14
I just finished this book, which was easy to read and well written. I have practiced
divorce law for 34 years, mediated civil and family law disputes for 10 years, completed collaborative
training, and have begun the collaborative practice of law. I am really
enjoying it and plan to change the focus of my practice to collaborative law.
As a divorced father of two adult children, I have personally experienced the dark side of
divorce via the traditional method and hope to offer clients another option to the traditionally adversarial way of divorcing. This book is a great guide for the practitioner and for those who are considering a divorce. It clearly sets forth the advantages of resolving conflict without the use of the adversarial court system method of "winner take all". I am revamping my website and practice materials and expect to incorporate many of the concepts set forth in this book to assist clients in deciding how they want to pursue their divorce.
I recommend this book for clients and practitioners (attorneys, mental health, financial and other professionals).......2006-11-04
As a family law attorney in Minnesota who believes that helping my clients is more important than maximizing my billable time, I am starting to use the Collaborative Practice method in some of my family law cases. After reading this book, The Collaborative Way to Divorce, I decided that the Collaborative Practice method would be better (less expensive with better outcomes) than traditional litigation for many of my family law clients. In family law cases (most often divorce), I frequently recommend proceeding Collaboratively rather than through traditional litigation, especially where children are involved. The Collaborative Way to Divorce leads both the client and the practitioner (attorneys, mental health, financial and other professionals) through both the benefits and the process of proceeding collaboratively. This book is readable by nonlawyers and lawyers alike and I highly recommend it. I regularly purchase a handful of copies of this book to give out to clients, clergy, and others who may be interested in learning about Collaborative Practice.
One of Two Key Books to Read if Contemplating Divorce.......2006-08-09
This book is one which I would recommend to any individual considering a divorce. One of the authors of the book, Stu Webb, is the "founder" of the collaborative divorce movement. The book should be read before selecting and going forward with traditional adversarial representation. There are several pros of the book are that it is written with one voice - despite being written by two lawyers. It is clearly written. The alternative book is the book with Pauline Tessler as co-author. This books is somewhat longer and more inter-disciplinary in its approach. The co-author is a psychologist. If you are looking for the book that is easiest to read yet, by this one.
Great guide to a great process!.......2006-06-06
Collaborative law is the new divorce revolution and this book is a wonderful, easy to read, well-organized guide. If you want to have dignity, integrity and civility when you and your spouse part, READ THIS BOOK!

Book Description
"The photographs as "ruins" and the "ruins" in the photographs overlap and when the newly emanated feeling for time is marked into the center of the photographs, the ruins are not the carcasses of destruction and devastation, but turn away from being coffins, symbols of death, and move the hub to the mysterious stage of life."--Shunji Ito
Black Sun is an unprecedented portrait of postwar Japan through the eyes of four of the nation's most significant photographers. It encompasses and connects ancient Japanese prophecies, the terror of nuclear destruction, and the results of swift and massive westernization.
Eikoh Hosoe, Shomei Tomatsu, Masahisa Fukase, and Daido Moriyama are widely acknowledged in Japan as masters of photography. Their work ranges from the metaphoric to the documentary, from the presentation of post-apocalyptic artifacts to portraits of crows and crowded city streets. However varied the approach, this work is unified by a sense of innovation and a persistent search for native roots.
Eikoh Hosoe's representation of the demonic myth Kamaitachi is structured like a dance, enacted among the villagers of the far north country and evoking Hosoe's childhood memories of the final years of World War II.
Shomei Tomatsu's work ranges from the legacy of Nagasaki to the student riots of the sixties. His photographs combine social documentary with a search for personal identity, a quest which concludes among the remote islanders of Okinawa.
Masahisa Fukase's epic series Crow adopts the universal symbol of the black bird as evil omen. The crow's somber presence shadows Fukase's journey to his birthplace on the northern island of Hokkaido, fusing private memories to a darker, national heritage.
Daido Moriyama uncovers the malice lurking in the alleys and backstreets of Tokyo. With his confrontational, highly graphic style, Moriyama reveals the overpowering density of life in modern Japan.
In the accompanying text, Mark Holborn creates his own picture of Japan's creative climate, one in which audacious exploration crashes against a legacy of tradition and refinement. He s20provides previously undocumented links between the photographers and other leading Japanese artists of our time, such as filmmaker Nagisa Oshima, graphic designer Tadanori Yokoo, and dancer Tatsumi Hijikata.
Ultimately, the dark lyricism of Black Sun serves as both cultural introduction and global prophecy. The shadow cast by these four photographers stretches beyond the shores of Japan and across the entire length of contemporary experience.
