Customer Reviews:
DIABETES CAN BE REVERSED.......2007-07-20
I used Dr. Barnard's regimen for reversing diabetes and can testify that it has great merit. Chelating oil out of the system helps getting rid of many diseases. I would recommend it to all diabetes sufferers.
Extracting the basic ideas .......2007-06-08
By analyzing and copying the protein, carbohydrates and fat ratios, you can gain more practical knowledge on cooking (nutrition) for diabetics (my grandparents and a few clients of mine are).
Reversing Diabetes Cookbook : More Than 200 Delicious, Healthy Recipes.......2006-07-01
A good campanion to Reversing Diabetes by the same author
Food allergy friendly!.......2006-04-16
This book is also great if you have peanut or soy allergies. I have a 7 year old who is allergic to peanuts and soy and there are many reacipes in here including desserts that are just for him! He was so excited!
Easy, delicious recipes, even if you don't have diabetes.......2005-10-17
Regardless of whether you have diabetes or not, this is an excellent cookbook with healthy, easy and fairly quick recipes. In most other cookbooks, you mark the recipes that you like - in this book, they are ALL good! I haven't found one that we wouldn't want to make again, and we cook a lot out of books like Cooking Light and Jacques Pepin. This is our new favorite. I bought 10 more books to give to family and friends as inexpensive gifts.
Book Description
This deck's 50 decadent recipes showcase the world's favorite guilty pleasure and illustrate basic tips for cooking with different types of that rich, dark, delicious treat chocolate! Who could resist whipping up Individual Molten Chocolate Cakes, a Black Velvet Chocolate Mousse, a devilish Chocolate Martini, or an irresistible Bittersweet Chocolate Gelato? Each card offers the means to a quick, luscious fix of this ultimate indulgence.
Customer Reviews:
Ahh for an organized mind..........2006-12-14
The cards are sturdy and attractive, and thankfully coated so that they wipe off fairly easily. The backs are graced with attractive photographs, usually of the card's dish. Thanks to the necessarily brief format, you know you're getting relatively simple recipes that don't require a ton of page-flipping. Ingredients and instructions are laid out quite well, and are easy to make out in a hurry.
Surprisingly, a four-panel foldout card includes a listing of all recipes with numbers (cards are numbered one through 50) as well as some basic tips and recipes for such things as melting chocolate and making chocolate frosting. We made two different kinds of chocolate mousse from the deck--a whipped cream-based mousse cake and an egg white-based mousse--and both were absolutely divine. The chocolate jelly (a chocolate jello-like dessert) didn't fare quite as well; it separated into two layers with different textures, and although it tasted quite good, not everyone at dinner was fond of the texture.
To a certain extent the utility of this deck is dependent on your personality and style; if you're highly organized, I think you'll find it much more usable than I did and can probably consider the rating to be 5 out of 5. If, like me, you have ADD-induced brain scatter, constantly having to find the small cards while you cook might drive you a tad nuts! Keep this in mind when deciding whether this item is right for you.
For Chocolate Lovers.......2005-12-09
"...In the year 2001, chocolate consumption in this country was more than three billion pounds. And for you, fellow chocolate lovers, I've created these recipes with as much deep, dark chocolate as possible. And you don't need previous experience making desserts or working with chocolate-I am totally confident that you can make these luscious chocolate desserts with ease." - From the deck
For those of us who consume chocolate at the rate of Emperor Montezuma, The Chocolate Deck is a wonderful treat! This 50-card deck features a full-color picture of the dish one side of the card and an easy-to-follow recipe on the other.
Some of the luscious recipes you'll find in this deck include:
* Chocolate Chip Meringue Cookies
* Quickest, Easiest Chocolate Mousse Pie
* Chocolate Refrigerator Roll
* Dark Chocolate Tart
* Mexican-Style Hot Chocolate For Adults
* Grilled Chocolate-Stuffed Bananas
* Chocolate Cheesecake
* Buttery Chocolate Wafers
* Bittersweet Hot Chocolate Soufflé
* Chocolate Panna Cotta
* Mocha Tiramisu
* Chocolate Whipped Cream
* Chocolate Martini
and more!
The Chocolate Deck comes with a 4-part fold-out that lists the recipes in numerical order, as well as describes the different forms of chocolate, necessary recipes (that aren't on the cards), a short history of chocolate, and how chocolate goes from cacao to the final product.
The cards measure approximately 5.5 x 3.75 inches and come in an attractive, sturdy box. The top comes off easily, providing easy access to the deck, and the box can stand upright.
The full-color photos make my mouth water! My only complaint with this deck is that a few of the pictures repeat. However, considering the tempting recipes in The Chocolate Deck, this is a minor criticism!
If you love chocolate or know someone who does, these cards would make a wonderful alternative to a bulky cookbook!

Many years ago Mr. Alfred de Rothschild tried, through his agents in China, to secure a specimen of the Palace dog for the writer, in order to carry on the Goodwood strain, but without success, even after a correspondence with Pekin which lasted more than two years; but we succeeded in obtaining confirmation of what we had always understood: namely, that the Palace dogs are rigidly guarded, and that their theft is punishable by death. BULLDOGS AND ALL ABOUT THEM By F. Barrett Fowler A VINTAGE DOG BOOKS CLASSIC REPRINT "Bulldogs" was originally written by Henry St. John Cooper in 1914. This new edition was revised, updated, and almost completely re-written by F. Barrett Fowler in 1925. Any edition of this book on the Bulldog is now both expensive and hard to find. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS have republished the revised edition, using the original text and photographs, as part of their CLASSIC BREED BOOKS series. The author was a well known and respected breeder who had much success with his show Bulldogs. He was also a prolific contributor to the dog press of that era. The book's two hundred and forty eight pages are divided into fourteen comprehensive chapters: Early History of the Bulldog - Comparison of the Dogs of Twenty Years Back With Those of Today. - Standard Description of the Bulldog. - How to Breed - Choosing the Best Sort of Brood Bitch. - Whelp Protecting, Foster Mothers and Weaning. - The Best Class of Kennel. - The Bulldog Instinct, Temper and Intelligence. - House Dog and Guard Dog. - Study of Pedigrees and How to Choose a Stud Dog. - Ailments and Best Food. - Exhibiting. Rules of the Show Ring and Judging. - Early Dog Shows. - Buying and Selling. - Leading Bulldog Societies. - Sending Dogs to Shows and Abroad. - Regulations. - The English Bulldog. - The French Bulldog. Etc. The thirty six page chapter on the French Bulldog will prove of particular interest to some breeders. The book is well illustrated with many text drawings and numerous vintage black and white photographs of famous Bulldogs. This is a fascinating read for any Bulldog enthusiast or historian of the breed, but also contains much information that is still useful and practical today. Many of the earliest dog breed books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

Customer Reviews:
Interesting and useful.......2007-01-28
Danny Proulx is the author of project books that I enjoy a great deal. This is one of my favorites. There are 15 projects in this book ranging from simple adjustable utility shelves to a kitchen pantry and an entertainment armoire. Mister Proulx keeps in mind the real world limitations that most of us face including the cost of materials and tool availability. He gives several options on how to build and finish, from simple slab doors to frame and panel construction. The author teaches and stresses basic points while the project plans allow freedom to amend to the intended use, preference, and skill of the wood worker. The projects will not result in museum quality heirlooms, but that is not the intent. The resulting projects are attractive, useful, sturdy, and I am proud to show them to my friends. The results are much nicer than the "build it in a weekend" style that sometimes show up in project books.
The projects detailed are as follows:
1) Pine chest of drawers
2) Storage Bed
3) Desk work center
4) wood edged counter tops
5) frameless base cabinets
6) utility wall cabinets
7) bookcase construction
8) Kitchen storage unit system
9) simple clothes wardrobe
10) low cost storage shelving
11) closet storage system
12) corner entertainment center
13) television armoire
14) large dresser
15) bedside cabinet and bookcase
Within the projects are great ideas such as building a panel cutting jig for your table saw, making solid wood panel glue ups, making a box joint jig, installing doors with hidden hinges, using dowels, making table saw frame and panel doors, and making birch plywood drawers. This book contains a great deal of useful information that is easy to utilize in a home workshop.
Same as Smart Shelfing & Storage.......2005-05-31
I have the Smart Shelving and Storage Solutions book by Proulx and from looking at the Table of Contents of this "new" book on line at Amazon, I believe that many if not all of the projects in both books are identical or very similar. Most of the photos in the Table of Contents of Best of Danny Prolux Storage & Shelving are the same as the ones in Smart Shelving and Storage Solutions. I'm sorry that Mr. Proulx finds it necessary to reissue an old book under a slightly different title. I for one will buy a different book.
Book Description
A practical primer to fostering a child with diabetes. Addresses the most acute facts about diabetes care and maintenance including how insulin works, available tools for blood-sugar control, and extensive nutritional information. Provides an overview of how to combine insulin, exercise, and a diabetes diet low in fat, salt, and sugar to overcome the obstacles of blood-sugar control. An essential guide for the parents of a diabetic child.
Customer Reviews:
Out of Date Information.......2006-11-08
I agree with the other comments that Ms. Loring is an obviously caring mom who is writing from experience and with compassion, but I find the information in the book very dated.
The book does not mention the insulin pump, which many kids now use, and has been a wonderful alternative to shots for many people with Diabetes. Also, the philopsophy that kids with Diabetes are "forbidden" to ever have sugar is extremely dated. Children and adults with Type 1 Diabetes can certainly enjoy the occasional treat (birthday parties, etc), with prior planning, and careful monitoring. If you work with your healthcare provider closely, children with Type 1 Diabetes no longer have to be the "odd kids out".
For more current information, check out Understanding Diabetes, published by the Children's Diabetes Foundation. While it doesn't have the "Mom Who Has Been There" angle, it does have a ton of very helpful and easily searchable information.
Dated information of marginal value........2005-06-03
I appreciate the fact that this book was written by someone who "has been there." But, Ms Loring wrote this book in 1991 and apparently updated some of the mateial in 1999. Given today's advances in diabetic treatment much of the information is sadly out of date.
If you want to read a book about the old days of diabetic treatment or a book written by a compassionate mother, then go ahead. I personally find it difficult to relate to the expriences of a Hollywood actress from over a decade ago.
If you want to know about today's treatment alternatives and how to deal with Type 1 diabetes in today's world, find a book with a more recent publication date, written by someone with the proper medical credentials. I'm not a medical professional, but I'm quickly becoming an expert on juvenile diabetes by reading and studying timely publications.
This book helped ease our fears........1998-03-01
I was given this book by another parent of a diabetic child and I read it and reread it. It is so honest about all the things that can happen to your child as well as encouragement. It has been a referance guide for our family. Her cookbook is wonderful too!

Book Description
The paintings of Piero della Francesca have remained intriguing because of their distinctive three-dimensional space and unemotional figures, but the artist himself remains a mystery. Curiously, his activities were not confined to painting. He wrote treatises on perspective, commercial arithmetic, and geometry, all without ever settling in any of the centers of great intellectual achievement. James R.Banker has unearthed previously undiscovered documents that make it possible for him to write a social biography of the artist that accounts for his early formation. The Culture of San Sepolcro during the Youth of Piero della Francesca examines the culture of the southeastern Tuscan town of Piero's youth. Analyses of San Sepolcro's political and social organization and its specific religious culture serve to enhance our understanding of Piero's early career prior to his experiences in Florence.
Piero della Francesca has remained an enigma because of the contradictions observed in his life and art. Banker's archival research has enabled him to clear away some of the obscurities. This book situates Piero in the earliest social and intellectual worlds within which he moved. Heretofore, writers on Piero have begun his putative formation in Florence in 1439. Banker demonstrates that the young painter's formation began prior to 1439, when he was surrounded by his family and the local artisans' community.
The Culture of San Sepolcro during the Youth of Piero della Francesca integrates social and art history in order to better understand the formation of a Renaissance artist. It will be vital to scholars and historians of the Italian Renaissance city states, as well as to art historians and those interested in the relationship of art and society.
James R. Banker is Professor of History, North Carolina State University.

Book Description
During World War II, Roger Hilsman fought in Burma with the legendary Merrill’s Marauders until he was machine-gunned. Then, at age twenty-five, he led a battalion of indigenous troops behind Japanese lines. At the war’s end, he headed a POW rescue mission to Manchuria, where the prisoners included his own father. An exciting, unusual coming-of-age story, American Guerrilla concludes with reflections on how Hilsman’s wartime experiences influenced his involvement in early Vietnam War policymaking when he served in the Kennedy administration.
Customer Reviews:
Fun reading.......2006-01-14
Mr. Hilsman's story begins with his life prior to enlisting and moves a little slowly to finally reach the action portion of the book. Still, the story is quite entertaining. The early background of his family and experiences of youth are good character-building for what follows. I had expected more action earlier on in the book and I thought it took a while to get to that part of the book but overall it was a good story. If you are looking for the action, skip the first few chapters and get right to the part where he joins the OSS. If you enjoy getting to know your character, stick with it through the beginning and you will be rewarded with sharing his adventures in the end.
Lest we forget..........2004-12-09
there are books like this one, perhaps now merely for those who are academically interested in the subject of the World War.
Hilsman has a casual and elegant style of writing, his narrative is filled with marvelous details, he has an unerring memory (how I wonder, this book was written many years after his war experience). Here you meet some of the characters from your history books, and learn how they were viewed by their men and their soliders (Stillwell, Seagrave, Merrill).
It's a forgotten part of WWII history, and the American soldiers who sweated and steamed in the tropical jungles of Burma find little acknowledgement in any contemporary war talk. So here is an exquisite reminder.
Hilsman writes with heart too--he reminds us that even armies defending or attacking each other in foreign lands have to behave with dignity and respect toward those who are native to the land.
The book is in many ways an intensely personal narrative, but it's strength and beauty lies in the retelling of a part of the war not often remembered today. Good job, Mr. Hilsman!
A Classic Personal Narrative.......2001-12-27
The author went on to have a long and noted career as an academic and government official. He was chief of the State Department Bureau of Intelligence and Research (INR) and the Assistant Secretary of State during the Johnson administration.
Roger Hilsman graduated from The US Military Academy in 1944 and was assigned to the OSS, Sent to Burma, the author commanded a guerrilla battalion, ambushing Japanese patrols, blowing up bridges, spying on the enemy, and slipping back into the teeming jungle. later he went to the prison camp in Manchuria where the Japanese had held his father and helped liberate him.
This is an articulate and informative memoir. In the course of his career the author has written many political and policy books. This gives a sense of the man behind the job.
