5 out of 5 stars One line and one poem (OK, 2 poems) .......2006-11-24

one line in the title poem for Audre Lorde: " "you left me there with / your head raised and still dreadlocked walking/ toward the beginnings of your death"

one poem: 4:15 a.m./ a jailhouse luv story: "in this institution that is rank with the bizarre & vicious oder of/ annihilation,/ we have only ourselves to hold up as light and possibility/ and i hold you up & i hold you in as/people tell me i am crazy,/loving you across barbed wire & time/ but i believe in our love because you struggle with me"

OK next poem your turn to pick.... as you can tell I love this poet.

Asha Bandele has a way with words. As always she calls us to dissect ourselves. To dig away at the surface in order to reach the core. Her words of poetry float over each page, and is able to attack the mind and force us to think. She is able to deliver and articulate what we think but so often afraid to say. She is the voice of my generation. A voice demanding to be heard.

5 out of 5 stars Don't miss out. Read Asha Bendele........2000-04-30

I stumbled across Bendele during an Amazon.com search for new poets and ordered this book as a gift based only on the reviews. I feel SO lucky to have found it. Bendele writes raw, powerful, honest poetry that causes the reader to draw in a deep, sudden breath time and time again as each poem surprises and enlightens. Bendele says the things that need to be said, and she does it so well that her message is unforgettable and undeniable.

And the best thing? You may be reading her poetry silently to yourself, but it reads like it's being spoken aloud to a packed auditorium. As a reader you get the sense that you're on the edge of something big and brilliant - the end of denial, and the acknowledgment of survival and hope in a painful and unjust world.

Please, Ms. Bendele, more, more, more!

5 out of 5 stars amazing grace.......1999-10-05

Asha Bandele is the Maya Angelou of my generation. I have read this book over a hundred times and have bought numerous copies for my friends (both men and women). Asha blesses each page with her truth and ability to express it so fluently. She gives back to all that are reaching out for a positive yet realistic voice.

5 out of 5 stars a true work of art.......1999-03-13

this book allowed me as a poet to reach deep inside my soul and feel every thing asha has felt...she is a poet that knows how to grab the reader and pull him or her into her world...i have not put this book down since i bought it...

      Book Description

There is so little that I can write but I do want to write this letter so you will know I have thought of you constantly since we parted. Either we will read it together some day or Hunter will send it along when all this is over.

In 1942, William Harrington was one of thousands of military personnel captured by the Japanese when the American army surrendered in the Philippines. Sixty years later, his granddaughter tries to piece together the story of his final journey.

Through powerful wartime letters, poems, and memoir, Lisa Ottiger recounts her family's eccentric history in the Philippines and the improbable love story of her grandmother Ruth, an American woman raised in glamorous pre-war Manila, and her grandfather, a young lawyer from Mississippi.

In My Absence is a moving story about the many journeys a family must make to lay rest its past and give voice to its story.

                    Appetites Geneen Roth

Explore What You Are Truly Hungry For - Within every person, there is a longing that no amount of food, no career accomplishment, no possession can ever fill. For this is a longing of the spirit. On Appetites, Geneen Roth looks beyond her 15 years of pioneering work with women, food, and body image, to ask: What truly nourishes the human spirit? Through the lens of her own experience, Roth looks at what happens when deep inner need is answered only with external "satisfaction." Why is it that we are still left feeling empty, no matter how much we try to accomplish in a day? Appetites shows that beneath your feelings of frustration and unaccountable hunger lies a reservoir of strength and courage, waiting to direct you to the true nourishment you are seeking.

3 out of 5 stars half the way.......2007-03-31

I read a number of books on emotional eating this spring and found this book, as well as the Roth book about eating at the fridge to be long on angst and short on solution. So you identify with her-good as far as that goes. I prefer to use my time and energy to find a better way. I found Intuitive Eating by Evelyn Tribole and The end of diets by Dilia de la altagracia to be more useful than Roth. But the book I am actually following is by Stanton Peele and Archie Brodsky, The truth about addiction and recovery, for it teaches you how to design a method to deal with your particular problem. It goes all the way-not just halfway. And for that I am thankful.

through telling her story, she is telling you another way. a better way. not to diet! to learn to love yourself and to stop depriving and indulging. she shows you that with allowing and enjoying, you CAN find a balance. it isn't an immdiate result but, it is a lasting one for the body and... the mind.

5 out of 5 stars Appetites by Geneen Roth.......2005-08-02

This book follows a series of books by Geneen Roth in which she addresses the connection between food and our emotions. Emotional eating or not eating is a way in which we manage our feelings. She is a wonderful writer who is able to clarify difficult issues by sharing autobiographical vignettes with humor and insight. She tells the story of how she overcame emotional eating. It's a book everyone who struggles with food should read.

3 out of 5 stars Wanted: Less Fluff, More Stuff.......2004-09-08

Although there were some interesting and enlightening concepts hidden within the pages of this book - most of it was entirely too autobiographical and boring to be of much use to me. I kept waiting for her stories to tie into the condition of being overweight and/or unsatisfied. She starts on several different veins that I feel could have been interesting and much more deeply explored, but dissapointingly, they weren't.

                    3 out of 5 stars Disapointed.......2002-12-08

Buy the books instead. Her screechy voice is hard to listen to.

                      Book Description

A fully revised and updated edition of Raymond Sokolov's classic kitchen primer for beginning chefs of all ages, filled with 150 simple, sophisticated recipes, easy–to–learn techniques, and indispensable advice.

First published in 1986, Ray Sokolov's How To Cook is the ultimate book for beginning cooks of all ages. Unlike most kitchen primers, How To Cook does not assume any prior cooking instruction or skills, but rather guides the reader through the entire cooking process with simple explanations in ordinary language. There are no fancy cooking terms or special gadget here, just easy, indispensable techniques and foolproof recipes for every occasion. In this revised paperback edition, Sokolov addresses the increased sophistication of even adamant non–cooks in today's food–obsessed climate, while he sticks to the unfussy, straightforward approach that made the original such a hit. Home cooks will learn everything they need for years worth of fabulous meals, from how to decipher recipe measurements, to how to fry an egg, to how to steam a lobster. Even readers weaned on frozen pizza will find recipes they can master, for last minute meals, special occasions and entertaining, and even holidays–all made from scratch with fresh, accessible ingredients. Experienced cooks will appreciate the simple elegance of such flavorful dishes as Veal Scallopini or Pears Poached in Red Wine. Written with Sokolov's trademark wit and wisdom, How To Cook is an invaluable kitchen classic you'll turn to again and again.

                      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Culinary Advice, Quirky Organization, Great Read.......2004-07-04

Raymond Sokolov's simply entitled book `How To Cook' attempts to answer to the needs of all the culinarily clueless men and women he addresses in his introduction. The simple, elegant cover design, small size, and inviting subtitle `An Easy and Imaginative Guide for the Beginner' promises us a culinary Strunk and White's `The Elements of Style'. Like the famous writers of this manual on English usage, the author also has serious credentials as a writer for famous journals. There is one very significant problem with this analogy.

In simplest terms, writing style and usage, like logic, can have rules that are always true. Cooking, like biology, always seems to want to color outside the lines. To take a very simple example, every written description and every TV demonstration of omelet making does things just a little different. The variations are so rampant that the great culinary writer Elizabeth David said that the right way to make an omelet is the way you want to make it. Of course, she proceeds to give you a long procedure on how to make a proper French omelet. Sokolov gives no clue to this point of view when he presents the method for making an omelet. In fact, he seems to leave out at least half of the steps many people consider essential. I truly fear that someone approaching omelet making for the first time with Sokolov's instructions will have several failures before achieving omelet perfection. And, since omelet making is all about technique, why are there no pictures? The same question applies to every other classic culinary skill Sokolov describes such as making a piecrust and breading a veal scallopine. One can argue that pictures would steal space from Sokolov's enjoyable and highly opinionated prose. And, I will agree with that argument, as long as I can treat this book more like a culinary essay by Elizabeth David than like a text by Jaques Pepin or Madeline Kamman.

Sokolov opens his book with a truly excellent guide to the modern kitchen. The discussion on how to read a recipe is the best I have seen. One is reminded of Mortimer Adler's classic `How to Read a Book'. His precis on the oven, the range, and the refrigerator are priceless and should be reprinted in every book of culinary writing from now to kingdom come, with one small exception. In recommending a range configuration, Sokolov suggests you get one where the four burners are close together to enable a large stockpot to be heated by all four simultaneously. This suggestion fails for the simple reason that the average single or small family cook will rarely make stock in anything larger than a 12 quart stock pot. I make stock fairly regularly, and I find it is much more common for me to need two large diameter burners far apart to accommodate an 8 quart pasta pot and an 8 quart enameled casserole than I need a configuration to support a 20 quart stock pot. I do not wish to make too much of this or any other difference. My point is not that Sokolov is wrong, my point is that Sokolov does not encourage the fledgling cooks to think for themselves. This is the same lesson as we got from the description of the omelet making.

Sokolov's approach to arranging recipes is quite enjoyable and typically quirky. I think it is delightful that he starts with recipes that can be made with no heat such as guacamole, vinaigrettes, ceviche, and gravlax. His including recipes for things like gravlax, carrot cake, and gefilte fish doubly impress me. These are not things you expect in a culinary primer. He does us all a service by giving novices the confidence to make such dishes. And, almost all the recipes are reasonably simple, even if they are sometimes very long, like gravlax. But, many of my favorite recipes always seem to show up with some idiosyncrasy in Sololov's hands. The carrot cake recipe is done in a tube pan rather than in layers or as a sheet. The spaghetti Puttanesca has canned tuna fish instead of anchovies. The roasted chicken is done breast down instead of breast up or done on its side a la James Beard. These are not wrong, they are just different, and Sokolov makes a habit of doing things a little differently.

One of the strangest things about the layout of the book is that once we leave the chapter on cold preparations, the logic of recipe arrangement takes on a very `Alice in Wonderland' feel, where dishes are arranged by how many people they serve. This puts all the vegetable recipes spread out across four different chapters. This arrangement exacerbates the fact that the book does not address my toughest culinary dilemma. This problem for an introductory book on cooking is, how can you advice people to plan their meals based on what is good at the market, if they don't know how to make anything yet. It is terrific to read Tom Colicchio say that chefs plan based on what they have in front of them, not the other way around. That's great, if you are Tom Colicchio and know every recipe worth knowing, but what do you do if you walk into a good greengrocer and don't have a clue as to what you can do with great, fresh Swiss Chard or parsnips or Napa cabbage. Like every other writer, Sokolov does not address this question.

Sokolov's culinary writings, this one included, are great fun to read. They are well written, full of interesting anecdotes, and full of opinions, not all of which you want to agree with, and they are definitely educational. I recommend you get this book together with Jaques Pepin's `Complete Techniques', so you can get an informed second opinion and good pictorial guidance as well.

This is a nice book to give to a cat owner. It has 79 pieces about cats, written by a variety of people with the common bond of loving cats. It begins with a poem by T.S. Eliot on the three names that each cat has (and you thought that your cat had only one name). Dave Barry contributes his look at cats. Don Knotts tells us how his cat gets stranded while climbing tall, mesh drapes. You may not have a dry eye after you read Gail Brennan's, "Ode to Sissy." There is a judge who keeps his cat in his courtroom for its calming effect during trials. There are stories by pro athletes and by people in all walks of life, each sharing a love of cats. We see Socks (President Clinton's cat), Garfield, and Felix. It's an enjoyable book.

This is a terrible, stupid, annoying book. One pointless anecdote after another, ninety percent of them being along the lines of "Well we had this great cat once, she kept having kittens and oh they were so cute. She finally got run over by a car one day and we were sad. We will always remember our wonderful cat."

One story excerpted from a book by Sonia Fitzpatrick abruptly stops several paragraphs before the end. Another seems to be just as stupidly truncated, but I couldn't verify it, as I could with Ms. Fitzpatrick's story.

Who are the rest of these people? And why did anyone see fit to fill an entire book with their badly written and (mostly) irresponsible reminiscences? Do yourself a favor, skip this book.

                      New in Paper
French beading is a simple yet lovely art, beautifully described here and illustrated in color with more than 70 close-up, how-to photos that show the intracacies of growing a garden of 30 flowers with delicate seed beads. Forty additional illustrations present the exact bead placement for each particular flower part. Just string the beads on wires and bend them into realistic, three-dimensional shapes; a helpful introductory section covers all the basics. You can indulge your creative passion almost anywhere--and the nicest thing is, they last forever. Construct a budding dogwood branch, frame a mirror with wisteria blooms, or make a holiday wreath of holly and gold-tipped pinecones. A gallery of vintage pieces illustrates the rich history of the craft.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty projects. Good instructions........2007-02-14

I bought this book because I saw some beaded flowers at a craft show and I thought I'd like to learn to do it myself. I had a little difficulty with the techniques in the beginning, but with practice and by frequently referring to the very nice, detailed pictures in the book, I finally got the hang of it and completed a fine looking poppy (if I do say so myself). I have since complete two other projects. I wouldn't go so far as to say the projects are easy or simple, but they are imminently doable. And last but not least, they provide the beader with a real sense of accomplishment.

Photography is excellent. Very clear instructions. Good for new crafters as well as those with experience. Variety of patterns is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice beading book.......2005-12-29

This was the first French beading book that I bought. As a beginner, it was a little hard to figure everything out at first, but with some practice and the detailed pictures in this book, I was able to come up with a nice finished product. The things I liked about this book, specifically, were how the first project illustrated the four basic techniques that would be used throughout the whole book. Once I fished the poppy, I almost couldn't believe it would be that simple! I also liked how each project was unique by demonstrating a new concept or some variation of the original four basic techniques (for example, striping the tiger lily and split loop for the dogwood).
What I didn't like too much about this book was that some of the flowers occasionally use previous techniques or ones that are covered later, and so a bit of page turning had to be done.
All in all, the concepts are explained really well, the designs are lovely and the book itself is quite pretty if you just want to admire the pictures, so I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great for beginnners!.......2005-04-03

This was the 4rd book on french beaded flowers that I picked up and I found it to be the best so far. The instructions are very detailed with photos of each step along the way. More detailed than other books I have tried to learn from. If you prefer photos showing the steps as opposed to just hand-drawn diagrams, then this is the book for you!

The pictures of finished projects are gorgeous! Wonderfully inspiring, especially the "fantasy flowers" near the back of the book.

The only minor quibble I have regards the order of introducing new techniques. Some of the advanced techniques are introduced in later chapters, yet are referenced in earlier flowers. The instructions with say "see page such-and-such for this technique", and you have to flip several pages later in the book to find out how to finish your flower. I think it would have been better to have each new technique introduced in order. But that is just a minor complaint based on my personal preferences.

Overall, a stunning book, well worth the money!

The symbiosis of artisan and medium whets this tale of the gentle giant of southern Illinois and his black walnut carvings.

Fred E. Myers was a southern Illinois coal miner who enjoyed carving figures of men and animals from the native woods of the area but most of all from black walnut, which he polished until the dark soul of the wood showed. An appendectomy in 1938 made it impossible for him to continue to work in the mines and the Works Progress Administration made it possible for him to work full time at his hobby. He worked from 1939 to 1942 carving models of prehistoric animal life and a series of local character types for the Southern Illinois Normal University Museum.

Myers carved thirty-five pieces for the museum and during the same period carved twenty-five pieces on his own. These works represent more than half of his entire artistic output.

Before I read this book I thought Japanese Interment was only about the Japanese in some camps. I didn't realize the injustice that we set upon these noble and great people. After reading this book I felt enraged at how the Japanese would have to sell or burn their beautiful and valuble items. I think they deserve so much more than a letter from the President. We should have a much better tribute toward them. I have always been proud of living in such a great state such as California, but I am not proud that they were the least tolerant of the Japanese.

4 out of 5 stars Dear Fellow Adolescents,.......1999-02-05

In this book called I Am An American that I read is a really good book because it is for the kids at the reading level of 9-12 (ages to). If you wanted to know the story. Well in the story their is a yough boy and his family that were intered with others. Also in this story is based one a true one, it is almost like a biography. As I was thinking about this story I realized that is was a very educational it makes you think about the world itself. When I was reading some other reviews I saw one and it caught my attention and I had to write about it. It was about a girl who had experienced what went on in the book. As I was reading on in this review it said that the girl and her family were interned too, just like the boy in the girl in the review. The girl's name that was interned with her family was Shi Nomura. I think being interned is like you having to pack up all of your things and then moving out of the place where you were and then never returning. I think that is just like being interned because you can never go back. And then I started to read another review and it mentioned that this whole thing happened during World War II, and that was one of the worst wars that went on in the world years ago. They said that Japan and many other countries were over world order. "Freedom has a Tousand charms to show". I used this because the people that were interned probably thought that they were going to be free because it makes it seem like they were going to be free but they weren't, going to be free at all. I think that it was a good book because it tells how badly people were treated, it had said that it was a good book. Some people may say that it was not a good book because it might make kids think that when they grow up they will be treated that way. It also might make it seem that this is still going on. It also might make teens think that the world around them is unfair to different people (races). Then it might make teens feel that some people in the world are disrespectful to different people (races), and should be respect to them no matter what race the people are. And it could make them think that people have no kind of respect for others and instead of being mean to them. It is a good book however kids can read it, get an educational idea of their life and the world that surrounds it. I Am An American can get a teen or a child to start reading at the reading level of 9-12. If you by this book then you will enjoy reading it because it will tell you what went on in the world back then instead of now. If you read this book now you will think that "Life isn't the same".
