Tone: laced with unintended irony; Substance: nothing new.......2000-12-23
Among the many pearls of insight offered by Alfred Kazin is one to which this author should pay much more respect: "What brings us closer to a work of art is not instruction, but another work of art."
Bronner begins his book with a lengthy apologia that explains in detail why every single other thing written about Camus is inadequate. I think such an introduction betrays the sort of scholar who would merrily have joined the pompous Parisian literati of the 1950s that banded *against* Camus, denouncing him as a traitor to the Left, and thereby proving forever their own hollow lack of substance. Therein lies the irony of tone with which this book is laced. Bronner is a man who purports to love Camus, but had he been writing fifty years ago, at the time when Camus most needed friends, I can easily see him being Camus' worst enemy.
As for substance, Bronner appears quite confident that his contribution is entirely original and more significant than anything heretofore written about Camus. I think in fact it is not particularly insightful, or at least no more so than what any intelligent layperson could get by reading Camus' works and the already existing biographical material.
Most insulting is Bronner's brusque disrespect for the Camus biography written by Herbert Lottman. Bronner first explains that the two major English-language Camus biographies in print -- one by Lottman and one by the Frenchman Olivier Todd -- are both inadequate because they are basically factual and not critical. However, the thing I found most frustrating about Bronner's book is that he commits exactly the sin from which Lottman mercifully spared us. Lottman writes in the preface to the second edition of his wonderful book that he will not deign to preach to us about how we should understand Camus. He so refuses because, as he explains, the essence of an artist is not in his biography (or, by extension, in secondary scholarship by university professors like Bronner), but in his works.
Notwithstanding Bronner's lengthly explanation of his own importance, I think his book will very quickly be relegated to the obscurity it deserves.
A Remarkable Synthesis.......2000-07-25
"Camus" Portrait of a Moralist" is a splendid book. I came across it after just finishing a 400+ biography of the subject that bulged with facts and quotes but lacked insight and analysis. These later two virtues Stephen Bronner provides in abundance. His remarkable achievement is to offer in 150 pages a persuasive interpretation of Camus that brings together his life events, artistic achievements and activities, and his philosophical and political thinking.
Bronner argues that Camus' career evolved in three stages. During his early period he developed his concept of the absurd. The Second World War and Camus' involvement in the resistance heralded a focus on rebellion and the human solidarity that grows out of a shared struggle against a powerful and demonic foe. In the post-war era, however, this solidarity splintered over issues such as communism and the French-Algerian War. During the last 10 years of his life Camus was distinguished by his refusal to embrace ideologies and fanatical devotion to causes regardless the cost in human life and dignity.
Bronner discusses Camus' artistic, philosophical and journalistic works to both demonstrate and illustrate Camus' development until his death at age 47. Within this framework, Bronner draws welcome attention to neglected aspects of Camus' outlook such as his almost contemplative atheism.
In sum, Bronner's stellar accomplishment if to write an interpretation of Camus that is both clear and concise for the uninitiated, and subtle and nuanced for those already acquainted with his subject.

Book Description
Trauma can turn a person's world upside down-- afterward, nothing may look safe or familiar. This supportive workbook helps trauma survivors find and use crucial skills for coping, self-understanding, and self-care. Even when the worst has happened, this book shows how it is possible to feel good again. Filled with comforting activities, relaxation techniques, self-evaluation questionnaires, and exercises, the workbook explains how and why trauma can throw you for a loop and what survivors can do now to cope. Chapters guide readers step-by-step toward reclaiming a basic sense of safety, self-worth, and control over their lives, as well as the capacity to trust and be close to others. Readers learn how to protect themselves from overwhelming memories and to heal from trauma-related reactions that may be disturbing their day-to-day lives. Written by experts in treating trauma and based on extensive research, the workbook can be used on its own or in conjunction with psychotherapy.

Helped me a lot.......2007-02-08
A few months after a major medical situation in my life (several surgeries for brain aneurysm), I began having a very hard time emotionally. I couldn't understand it as I was now "healed" and I thought I should be happy about it. A friend of mine was pursuing a doctorate in Psychology and she suggested that I might be suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (not just for war veterans) based on the symptoms I was having. (paranoia, anxiety, depression...not usual characteristics of my happy-go-lucky personality) She actually sent me this book and suggested I try it out along with seeking help from a professional. After talking to her, I went to a psychiatrist to ask about medication and to a therapist along with working on this book. I found that the book was incredibly helpful in teaching me ways to cope with my paranoia, anxiety, and depression when I would hit triggering situations. The book gave me things to do at home when I wasn't with a counselor, and many times I felt it was more useful. (It took me a while to find a counselor with whom I felt comfortable) I'm part of an online support group for aneurysm survivors and many people have similar problems to what I had after coming through the surgeries. I always recommend this book and give them the link to Amazon.
I lent the book to a friend of mine who was traumatized after Hurricane Katrina. (her whole New Orleans neighborhood was flooded and she saw awful things like dead bodies floating by) She also found it very helpful as she did not have much money to pay for counseling. Sadly, she passed away from unrelated medical problems, so she isn't here to write a review in person. But she did a lot of the writing and exercises and she told me how helpful it was. She recommended it to another friend of hers from New Orleans.
Healing, Helpful book.......2001-05-28
Dena Rosenbloom, Ph.D., and Mary Beth Williams Ph.D have written an extremely helpful book for trauma survivors. They work from the premise that: "Trauma affects us by undermining five basic human needs. These are: •The need to be safe •The need to trust •The need to feel some control over one’s life •The need to feel of value •The need to feel close to others." Life After Trauma is designed to help survivors learn to meet these needs. It can be used at home or in conjunction with therapy. The authors do not feel that every one needs therapy even though they are therapists trained in dealing with trauma. They believe, however, that trauma changes survivors’ basic beliefs, sometimes in ways of which they are not aware. This book is designed to increase a survivor’s awareness of core beliefs, to help survivors test their validity, and to help find more healing beliefs if the survivor so desires. Life After Trauma is about dealing with life today, not for working through the trauma. The prologue discusses how the workbook can help survivors. The authors stress finding support, learning self-care strategies, affirmations and soothing self-talk. They discuss when to set the workbook aside and coping with triggers. I found all these suggestions very helpful in dealing with some emotional upheavals I was having at the time. Chapter One, “After Trauma: Why you feel thrown for a loop,” discusses physical, mental, emotional and behavioral reactions to trauma and ways of checking in with yourself and learning to relax. The second chapter, “Ways of Coping After the Trauma,” contains several coping checklists and questions you can ask yourself for analyzing how you cope, followed by suggestions on how to cope more effectively. They even point out that dissociation can be an effective coping tool if you can evoke it as needed. Chapter Three, “Thinking Things Through,” discusses how to separate facts from reactions and meanings/interpretations, how these may change after trauma and a system for thinking them through. The next five chapters explore in detail how to meet the five needs, safety, trust, control, value and intimacy. Part of this is identifying beliefs, checking their validity, finding possible alternate explanations or interpretations, and so forth. There are also reminders of self care activities and relaxations exercises throughout the book. Here’s a quote "You can shift your physical and emotional state by, first, reminding yourself that you are in a different time and place from when you experienced trauma initially. You probably have greater choice and control now that you did then. Second, find ways to comfort and soothe yourself. We have provided ideas for doing this throughout the book, such as relaxation exercises. You may not think they can be much help, but consider this: It is not possible to be tense and completely relaxed at the same time. Learning to relax will directly relieve your tension and anxiety, even if for brief periods initially. Learning to relax can help you feel more in control as well as calmer. The feelings you learn to evoke through self-care and self-comforting exercises are, in many ways, the opposite of those evoked by the trauma. You can learn to use them to help counter and manage negative feelings that now seem out of your control." There is also a very good appendix on readings, one on finding good trauma therapy, and one for therapists who might want to use this book with clients. I can’t recommend this book too highly. It is healing, deals with the kind of daily problems that trauma survivors face in a sensible, thoughtful, and above all, hopeful way. Things can change one little step at a time. The book offers a lot of steps a survivor can take, always with an emphasis on safety and self care. This review first appeared in the Post-Traumatic Gazette, a newsletter with a healing perspective for all trauma survivors. ...This book has that healing perspective.
Excellent Book on Coping With Trauma.......2001-05-17
I purchased this book only to later realize that Dr. Rosenbloom was local to me. After reading and using the book, I chose Dr. Rosenbloom as my personal therapist.
I would strongly recomment this workbook to anyone that is struggling with recovery from trauma or Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome.
Living in the Present.......2000-04-22
I was expecting this book to be about unraveling the past, understanding it, and generally spending a lot of time in territory I wasn't interested in revisiting... Thankfully, it is about being aware of feelings taking place in the present. This book is geared toward increasing self-awareness and self-knowledge, especially important for those who have disassociated in some way or don't feel like "themselves". What a great thing! The format and style are comfortable and easy to use, and I found myself gaining insight as the book went along, without adding more stress to my life! Thank you for this wonderful workbook.
The healing starts here.......2000-03-22
I wanted to read this book after a car crash resulted in general anxiety. When I began to read it, I felt as though the authors really undertood how I was feeling. I felt as though someone were holding my hand, letting me know that there is a light at the end of this dark tunnel.

Good Eats!.......2005-04-28
If you are looking for an easy to understand, easy to use low carb cookbook, with tasty recipes to indulge in, this is the book for you. It is a well organized book with a friendly tone.
I love how she adds special details about prepackaged low carb foods, sweetners, fats and oils, herbs and fiber, to a simple course in cooking with alcohol. Lauri's a good teacher, who shares her wisdom in a down to earth fashion. Whenever I pick up her book, I feel like I'm visiting an old friend. Right now I'm going through a soup kick, and Lauri has some amazing soup recipes, from her Pumpkin Coconut Soup to her Barbados Stew. I love how now and then she shares her story about what inspired her to create the recipe. It really is a treasure of a cookbook, and one that I highly recommend whether you are watching your carb intake or just looking for good eats!
The BEST!.......2005-04-07
Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful .. each recipe is perfect and easy to make! The instructions are so clear that even I can cook like a pro. Some of my favorite recipes are the Cheesy Chicken with Artichokes, Confetti Snow Peas, Curry Turkey Salad, the Sauerbraten and the Chicken Caesar Salad. I've also made the Almond Cookies at least 10 times since the first of the year; they are so good!
This cookbook is huge, packed full of great recipes. And there is lots of other information in it too, like the proper oil to use for different cooking methods. The discussion on the different cuts of beef has been useful for me too.
This is my 4th low carb cookbook and the only one I need. The weight is starting to come off again because I am enjoying cooking again. So if you are only going to buy one cookbook, then I highly recommend this one; you will not be disappointed.
another winner.......2005-01-04
if there were more stars for reviews this book would keep going. laurie really "gets" it. these recipes are awesome and i didnt think she could get better than the last book which i bought for friends for gifts. this book is the best of the best she gives us info on some of the things we have to buy for seasonings as well. i can now mix herbs to give to friends along with the book . picture a basket with the book and a packet of herbs de provance that you made up yourself i am blown away by all the additional info in this book as well this author approaches cooking from the perspective of making food with ingredients from the market, made without being time fussy and making enough to have additional meals. there are all different carb counts for all phases of the lifestyle and best of all many of the higher counts give choices to leave something out for the induction phase, while still being able to have the item now isnt that original... i can have pancakes many different ways and she has lots of breakfasts for those of us who dont ever feel like eating breakfast. she uses the new dairy beverage (hood countdown) for some recipes in place of cream and i find that the cream makes things very thick where the dairy beverage gives more of a custard texture.i have never had hicama going to try that soon. i reviewed all my other cookbooks and when the weather gets better ill be having a yard sale. if you can only afford one or two low carb books i can tell you my shelf has laurie's two books and george stellas and you dont need any others . that is until laurie comes out with number three.....
Great for Low-Cal Diets Too; An Artitst with Herbs and Spice.......2005-01-02
Since June 2004 I've lost 35 pounds on a low-cal medically supervised diet that used pre-packaged shakes and entrees. Going into the maintenance phase now I am looking forward to starting to cook again. After receiving this cookbook for Christmas, the third in a great series of cookbooks, I went through and dog-eared the pages of the recipes that fit my criteria of low-cal.
Tonight I made Beer-Braised Pork Chops, page 219. It was EXCELLENT and sooo easy and less than 30 minutes. Only 5 ingredients. The moistest pork chops I've ever made. I ate one serving, only 173 calories, and put the other servings into individual containters in the fridge and freezer for quick meals later in the week. Don't let the Low Carb title of this book limit you. Pick all the great recipes that can fit into any nutritous diet regime.
Now I do need to disclaim that Lauri is my sister. BUT, I have a BS degree in dietetics and would not endorse any cookbook I did not believe in. In college I lived with Lauri off and on and she is one of the most creative cooks ever. She taught me how to cook meals from scratch that were sooo tasty. A better learning ground than any food classes I took for my degree. She cooks with the passion of an artist, marrying herbs and spices just right is a real niche. And as an educated mechanical engineer she has refined the science of EACH recipe, testing them over and over in her kitchen before adding them to her cookbooks. If you've ever made a recipe from a book, magazine or the paper that obviously was incorrect in it's methods, timing or proportions, like I have, you will appreciate that Lauri tests EACH of her recipes to perfection so you know you can count on it coming out just right. ENJOY.
Wow: Great Recipes!!.......2004-12-10
I am so excited about this new low carb cookbook: so far every recipe has been incredible! I usually have to "tweek" recipes in most low carb cookbooks (including the recipes from the low carb queen Dana Carpenter). But so far with Lauri's new cookbook, most of my margin notes are simply a heart symbol next to the recipes that I love (which are so conveniently listed at the beginning of each section). Lauri's first cookbook was good but this one is great! I applaud how well this cookbook is organized. Each section has the recipes categorized as Induction, Weight Loss and Maintenance. This has been very helpful!
When I get a new cookbook, my first choices are the vegetable and chicken recipes. So far I have made the Chicken in Coconut Sauce with the Hawaiian Salsa (incredible!), Chicken Paprika (oh my god!) and the Aspen Chicken (outstanding). As for the vegetables, I've tried the Turnips Au Gratin, Poached Red Cabbage and Pepper Jack Cauliflower; all are super great. But the Mock Rice Pilaf is out of this world and brilliant! I can't wait to try all the wonderful looking variations offered.
Now let's talk about chili - the Slap Me Silly Chili is unbelievably delicious and what a cute name! This chili has a little heat (although not as much as Lauri seems to think it has) but it is the flavor that slapped me silly. Wow! It is so good! The blend of spices and textures is excellent. Perhaps it is the chorizo sausage that sets this chili above all others.
For breakfast I have tried two variations of the pancakes and love them. The spiced Pumpkin Muffins are delicious and so very moist. I had the Hot Cereal this morning which has 12g of fiber and it is wonderful too. However, I did tweek this recipe by omitting the psyllium husk (because I didn't have any) and substituting a bit more flax seed meal.
As for the desserts, so far I have made the Blackberry Yogurt Pie which was outstanding and a really healthy dessert option as well as the Ginger Pecan Cookies which never completely cooled as my whole family gobbled them up. I'm looking forward to making the other cookie recipes.
Although I have tried only a handful of recipes so far, I am astounished that each one has been so incredibly wonderful! Move over Dana Carpenter, it looks like you are going to be usurped by Lauri Ann Randolph as my new favorite low carb cookbook author.

A little derivative.......2007-10-02
This book has lots of great information and technique, but IMO owes a great big debt to books by Jan Mullen and by Judy Hooworth, both of whom the authors have lifted techniques and ideas from, and just retitled slightly. These two gals are good, no doubt, but it always bothers me to see ideas recycled from other artists without acknowledging them.

Collaborative Quilting.......2007-05-04
Having quilted for 7 years and having tons of quilt books, I honestly feel this is one of the best quilting books I have read. I just couldn't put it down. It not only gives quilting from an art view, but also goes over the basics and has a lot of different ways to put a quilt together. I would recommend this book highly and definitely for anyone that wants to go a step beyond the basics.

I love it almost as much as I love gardening! I also have the Perennials CD by Allan Armitage, and they complement each other nicely. I love being able to sort the plant database by flower height, foliage height, and usage (landscaping or container).
It would have been helpful to also be able to sort this list by color.
I also love the beautiful slide show of annuals set to music.

Book Description
In his trademark "tell-it-like-it-is" style, Dr. Phil McGraw presents an enlightening and entertaining workshop on how to "get real" - in relationships and in life. He explains how to live by design, as opposed to living reactively, and urges you to "step out of the comfort zone" by evaluating everything in your life based on whether it's working or not.
Tape 1: On this tape, Dr. Phil tackles the first Law of Life - "you either get it or you don't: - as a way to show how choices made in your behavior lead to specific consequences.
Tape 2: Dr. Phil effectively drives home the point that your relationship with yourself should be the most important one in your life, and shows how important it is to pay attention to your internal dialogue and test the assumptions that you believe are facts.
Tape 3: Dr. Phil shares his "personal relationship values," which are tips for helping you make your relationships as positive and mutually fulfilling as they can be. He also urges you to give up on being a "right-fighter" and actually communicate with and listen to your partner.
Tape 4: According to Dr. Phil, you can "behave your way to success." He points out that intimacy has very little to do with physical acts - it's based on making your own needs known, risking vulnerability, and working to discover and meet the needs of your partner.

If you Like Dr Phil.......2007-08-16
If you Like Dr Phil, you'll like this material. I like Dr. Phil's direct approach you never have to guess what he really means. He helps you drill down to the root of things so you know what needs to be changed.
Hearing is believing.......2005-02-15
I had the pleasure of listening to this product while commuting one week. There are some amazing stories pulled from Dr. Phil's past and some wonderful step by step examples for the listener to follow. Dr. Phil is great on the printed page, but hearing him speak is the real deal. James Green, author of "If There's One Thing I've Learned."
Any marriage will benefit from this.......2005-02-01
Dr. Phil Getting Real by Dr. Phil McGraw is easy to listen to and filled with excellent advise for becoming a better marriage partner or gaining the confidence to leave an unfixable relationship, and how to tell the difference. Dr. Phil, who is highly qualified in the field of psychology, has the ability to "get down where you live" and talk in plain ( an often explitive four letter words) language so that you know you are not listening to some Ph. D. who is way over your heads. His TV and Radio fame is well-deserved, and he provides here no quick and easy exit or fix for an unharmonious marriage, but some excellent advice of how to proceed to make your situation better and to improve yourself first and then your relationships. We highly recommend this set of CD's for time well-used when you are on the go.
I know it's a cliche, but it changed my life..........2003-09-20
I listened to this audio book after having a mini-nervous breakdown at my job. I hated everyday of my work but I felt trapped by debt & honor. 'Getting Real' showed me that I needed to make a change in my life to find happiness. You need to make a commitment to yourself to be happy & you have to be willing to sacrifice for happiness.
There are many classic Dr. Phil sayings on 'Getting Real' but one statement stood out in my mind. "Are you doing what you're doing today just because you did it yesterday?" That was my life & I sure wasn't "living by design."
I made a commitment to myself to leave my office job in six months & I set a deadline. I didn't know what I would be doing but I knew it wasn't going to be office work. I gave myself six months to brainstorm about my life. What did I want?
I have now returned to school to obtain a degree in my passion: languages & working with people. "Getting Real" was one of many motivators that I had & it was great to have the support.
You can do it too!
America's #1 Therapist - right in your living room........2003-09-17
Truly, though all of what Dr. Phil has to say is common sense (with a little stand up comedy thrown in) in this four cassette edition about your life, and although most of what he says you knew somewhere in your heart, you will learn the most incredible things. I thought our relationship (my husband and mine) was good, I can see I was right, but there were so many ways to make it THE relationship that I never even thought about. I truly think this man could run for President. One thing he mentions is passion, having a passion for the things in life that matter most to you (among having other things) and you can just hear the passion in HIS voice, knowing he believes what he is saying, and not just believes it, but wants YOU to know it. Because it's simple. Because you already know it and have to face it sooner or later. Because it will make your life so much easier. Don't struggle emotionally one more minute, just listen to these cassettes together with a partner, alone on your headset, while resting in the bath, and you will absolutely be amazed by the transformation that sets inside of you almost instantly - all good of course. You will also learn some harsh realities, along with a few things you didn't know about Dr. Phil that will surprise you. Best of all, no griping, no grumbling, just listen, and the fee....well, judge for yourself what you would pay a therapist for all this great advice and all of this time. Dr. Phil bills by the heart. Thanks again and again Dr. Phil.

Luc Sante's memoir/history features the same elegant, faintly sardonic prose that distinguished his first book, Low Life. Born in Belgium in 1954, transplanted to New Jersey at age 5, he intermingles evocative material about his familial and national past with glimpses of his American experiences. Sante's not one to bare his soul, but the cumulative effect of his impressionistic technique is revealing: when he describes the hallmarks of his natal land as "ambivalence, invisibility, secretiveness, self-doubt, passivity, irony, and derision," we infer that these traits also form the author's essence.
Book Description
"Like it or not, each one of us was made, less by blood or genes than by a process that is largely accidental, the impact of things seen and heard and smelled and tasted and endured in those few years before our clay hardened," writes Luc Sante. The Factory of Facts is his personal account of that process, less a memoir than an Identi-Kit self-portrait. Born in a factory town in southern Belgium in 1954, he was brought by his parents to the United States as a small child. Not quite knowing where he belonged, Sante grew up split: half in the old world, half in the new one, and resentful of both. His native land became ever more an abstraction, until he revisited it at age thirty-five. Suddenly he felt "as if I were taking a walking tour of my subconscious."
So Sante becomes a detective, digging for clues to his childhood, to the lives of his parents, to the murky traces of his ancestors. He examines the social history of his native town, Verviers, which turns out to have been the home of his forbears for a millennium--a harsh industrial city, the birthplace of anarchists, autodidacts, and violin prodigies. And he looks at Belgium itself, an "artificial" country, "cast under the sign of ambivalence." The home of Magritte, Tintin, Brueghel, and Simenon is a puzzle, held together by its conflicts and contradictions. And everywhere Sante looks he finds little bits of himself.
Navigating among the coordinates of time, place, and language, foraging through flea markets, scrolling through microfilmed documents, deconstructing stray photographs and anecdotes, Sante creates a superb work of remembrance and history. He comes to realize that he is the sum of a pile of accidents, capricious products of history and culture. The specifics of his story may be his alone, but its outline is shared by us all. In our era of political, cultural, economic, and technological convergences, The Factory of Facts brilliantly proposes a template for everyone's autobiography.
Customer Reviews:
Fails to live up to cartoon connection.......1999-01-29
When I first heard that the man who had provided the model for the Jon Lovitz character on the criminally neglected cartoon series 'The Critic' had an autobiography out I was understandably excited. Sad to say, this latest entry in the memoir sweepstakes is a grave disappointment. A homely collection of borrowed postmod effects, graceless prose and anecdotes so boring that one begins to suspect the author of a passive-aggressive hostility. Alas, no matter how funny he may look, Luc Sante's no Jon Lovitz.
Boosting Cornellian Boxes.......1999-01-10
"This book is the missing link between Benjamin's Arcades and Frank Kogan's fanzine Why Music Sucks, more streetwise than the former and with more potatoes than the latter, while not overlooking the traditions of the Rabelaisian catalogue, the Bretonian weekly junkshop run, or just good ol' Oulipian hijinks. You read this, then shoplift his templates and project them up onto the mural on the darkened childhood bedroom wall of your own life. Sometimes they come out looking like Nan Goldin's photographs; your psyche runs for cover." - John Wójtowicz
An introduction to a wonderful country.......1998-12-01
When I had the opportunity to study in Belgium I was told "Belgium is a beautiful country - when the sun shines." That is certainly correct. But if this book had been published before I left for Belgium it would have shown me a way of seeing this country in a whole new light. There is more than one source of sunlight. Luc Sante is one of those sources. If you are planning an extended stay in Belgium read it before you go. Even better, if you have had the experience of living in Belgium for a reasonable length of time you will want to get on the first plane back there.
An amazing factory -- in glorious full production.......1998-02-12
Sante has a wonderful mind, a kind heart, the eye of a detective, an uncanny ear for language, cultural differences, nuance, and the meaning of things. In this book you come to know him and to know a lot about his subject: Belgium, where he started from (the adored only child of quite wonderful parents), and his experience of emigration to the US, and living in two -- or more -- (physical, religious, linguistic, historical, geographic, mental, psychic) places. A Lacanian reverence for language informs this work, which is worth reading and rereading. Each chapter can stand alone as an absorbing and fascinating essay. Wow! You even learn the proper way to pronounce "Sante."

I want to know about Sabi in Oku no hoshomichi. But i cant'n reat about it anywhere. Can you help me?
Only version that delivers the goods........1999-11-05
There are perhaps half a dozen English versions of this, Basho's most famous "travel journal"--the Oku no hosomichi--currently available. If you have not read this version, you may justifiably wonder how this could be considered one of the two pillars of Japanese literature (with The Tale of Genji).
Translating the haiku in this work is devilishly difficult. I don't believe that Corman has delivered the goods 100% of the time, but his are still the best versions available, overall.
In the meantime, Corman is the only one who has managed to create in English prose something that remotely resembles the prose of the Japanese text. Basho did NOT write ordinary Japanese prose, so any translation into English that sounds like something you might hear on commercial radio or TV, or reads like a current novel by you-name-it, is woefully inadequate.
Corman's version has been slighted by others, claiming that it "sounds like Corman's own poems" (it does not) or it's written "as if Jack Kerouac went on the journey". (This last is amazing, as I cannot think of a style more distant from Kerouac in contemporary American English.)
Rather, Corman has tried to let the unique toughness and terseness of Basho's language cross the translation barrier.
This translation is closer to Basho than any other I've seen, and I've read probably just about every English translation of it ever published in an edition of 500 or more--and the original.
Kudos to Robert Hass for seeing it back into print!
