Just a brief acknowlodgement for a pretty special person. I worked with Bob at Chevron Inc. in Los Angeles during most of the 70's. While I knew Bob had served in the War and Korea, he, like so many of his comrades didn't have much to say about it. They had gone about doing their job and then came home and continued doing their jobs....amazing group of men..truly part of the greatest generation! I was 10 years old when the War ended in 1945 so my impression of war was that of a child. Bob's well written and easy to read memoir is truly an important addition to our nation's history as well as a candid look at a person involved in monumental events. Bob writes in an easy-going, casual cadence that is a pleasure to read. I heartily recommend his book to both the serious collector and to anyone just interested in getting a glimpse of a combat soldier's life.

My husband and I lived next door to George Moranda, in Dinuba, while the draft original manuscript was a work in progress. I had an opportunity to read a portion of that draft manuscript and couldn't wait to read the finished book. As a mother, and now a Grandmother, the fact that ALL of the Moranda children served in the war (including their sister) in various branches makes me have unbounded empathy for what their parents must have felt.
Bob's accounting of what these brave soldiers endured (blistering cold weather, inadequate clothing for the extremes, and the same COLD rations day after day) brought a NEW RESPECT for their suffering and bravery, especially for those of us who were children during the war and whose parents did not serve.
What a privilege it is to follow the story of this young man and to witness as his life is turned upside-down to serve in a war not of his choice. A young man trusting in his faith in God, who identifies in his book the brave acts of several he served with, by name. He also includes the not-so-brave acts of others that remain unnamed in his accounting.
What a wonderful history lesson. His recollections have sparked an interest in WWII that I would not otherwise have had - in fact, I am spurred to read other 'memories' of the War. THANK YOU, BOB (AND GEORGE)!
Very important historical account of the Battle of the Bulge.......2001-04-17
Bob Moranda was an officer in Task Force Boyer, which defended the eastern approach to St. Vith, Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge -- the largest battle in the history of the U.S. Army. The battle at St. Vith was extremely important to the overall failure of the German effort in the Bulge, since St. Vith was the crucial road and rail center through which German supplies were supposed to flow to both of the two German Armies (Sixth and Fifth Panzer) making the main attack. Hitler's own plan called for St. Vith to be in German hands by December 17, 1944, but the defense of Task Force Boyer and the rest of the 7th Armored Division and attached units held the town until December 21 and kept it within artillery range for two more days. This led the Fifth German Army commander to the clear recognition -- proven true by the events that followed -- that the entire Ardennes Offensive was doomed, but Hitler personally denied his request to halt the offensive.
For the crucial days up to and including December 21, 1944, Task Force Boyer was the front of the front lines in the very center of the bulge that the Germans created in the American lines. With only some 150 men, they held off wave after wave of German attacks. Actual counts of dead Germans that they were able to make during the lulls in the battle totaled 604. The defenders held off tanks and massed infantry -- at one time an attack of two battalions, roughly 1,500, came at them but was stopped, thanks to their tenacious defense and to the precision of the supporting artillery. The Germans finally broke through to the south and to the north of them, cutting them off and capturing those who survived, including all but one of the officers of Task Force Boyer.
Until now, there has been only one somewhat available account of the Task Force's efforts written by one of those officers. Major Donald P. Boyer, who led the task force, wrote his account in the late 1940's, as part of the documentation for the Presidential Unit Citation that was eventually awarded to the elements of the 7th Armored Division and attached units in the defense of St. Vith. Four of the other officers have since died without leaving their personal accounts, and a fifth who is still living is not likely to write an account. The only other account, by Lt. Holland of the 168th Engineer Combat Battalion, is one that I have heard exists but have yet to actually see.
The bottom line is that there are only three accounts ever likely to exist by the officers of Task Force Boyer (including the attached Forward Observer). And Bob Moranda's account is the last of those that will ever be written.
This is a highly important historical document to help to tell Task Force Boyer story that has never been completely told, since so many of those who were there were killed or captured or wounded and thus never interviewed by the Information and Historical Section interviewers who captured so much valuable information about the Bulge. And there were no newspaper reporters there either, as there were at areas of the Bulge along the shoulders. From a military standpoint, the denial of the St. Vith supply routes to the Germans was, from the Germans' own point of view, the most important single combat failure by the Germans in the Bulge. Bob Moranda's book gives a great deal more insight into the forward-most part of the front in the center of the most crucial part of the largest battle in U.S. Army history.
(Clearly the men of Task Force Boyer were not the only ones who made important stands in the Bulge. For one example among many, the solid block which the 2nd and 99th infantry Divisions made on the northern shoulder forced the Sixth Panzer Army to the south, congesting roads designated for Fifth Panzer Army. In fact, the 7th Armored Division would probably never have reached St. Vith from their starting point north of Aachen, if the northern shoulder had not held. But if the Germans had taken St. Vith, the northern shoulder defenders might well have been cut off by rapidly advancing and well-supplied German troops sweeping around their southern flank before American units could be brought in behind them. The Bulge was a highly complex battle in which a great deal of inter-dependency existed in the efforts of the American units, even those that were far apart: for example, if the Germans had taken St. Vith on schedule or even a day or two late, no one would have hard much about Bastogne's defense and relief, since it would have been in German hands. But from the point of view of the Germans themselves, who gave interviews on the subject after the war, it was the failure to take St. Vith that doomed them in the Bulge.)
The book is not just about the Bulge. It also gives a highly readable story of one man's life before the war and his transition from civilian to soldier back to civilian. There is also an account of some of the events during the battles at Overloon and Horik and Ospel in Holland in October 1944, which will help to further understand these little know but very bitter and costly battles.
The first edition has a number of typographical and spelling errors, as well as a few small factual errors. But Bob Moranda's writing and his brother George's "big picture" insertions are extremely readable. The story comes through in spite of the odd error here and there. As important a book as this is, it should have many editions. So even these errors may be corrected in the next edition.

The is one of the best books for anyone wishing to understand and begin using homeopathy. It is well arranged for ease of use. I use this book in my practice and frequently suggest it's use to my clients.
luckey remedies of dr. lockey.......2006-04-09
working as a homeopathic physician,mostly dealing with"clinical homeopathy", I have found many "pearls" in this book.
one of them is the specific remedy for "bartholinitis".
in two cases i could prevent within days surgical intervention.
recently i tried the same remedy, bar. carb.,on a condition where few specialists know what to do with ["vestibulitis"] and saw a rapid healing,after trial of all kind of other treatments in vain.
every homeopath has his special experiences.
dr. locky seems to be "luckey" in the choise of his remedies.
Typeface small, hard to read.......2006-03-05
One word of caution, the typeface is small and not pleasing to the eye. I returned the book because it was difficult to read.

this is the only book to have for an immature homeopath. but, it is very disorganized. it is very difficult to find a specific ailment in this book. sometimes you have to read a chapter or two to find what you are looking for. also, Dr. Lockie in this book talks about many ailments that he does not suggests any remedies for. it just feels like waisting my time to finally find it, read a page on the ailment, and not even get any use from it. the only great thing that i find about this book, is that it shows you how to pick the right medicine without guesswork and abra-cadabra that i found so many homeopaths use.
A great intro to a worthy allopathic alternative.......2000-11-25
I received this book from a friend almost five years ago, and I continue to refer to it again and again. This is a wonderful reference for anyone interested in homeopathy, from the beginner looking for a proven alternative to allopathic medicine, to the more advanced homeopath who needs a good reference. This edition covers a myriad of ailments and gives clear, easy to understand explainations of the homeopathic remedies presented here. Highly recommended to those of you looking for a great homeopathic reference guide.

Great introduction to vegan Jewish cooking.......2003-11-20
This is a wonderful book. It not only talks about religious reasons to be a vegan, but it also gives menus, prayers and recipes for each Holiday through the year. Tips about which recipes can be made and kept warm are invaluable. There are renditions of all the Jewish classics such as Matzo ball soup and knishes plus some more exotic recipes. Many recipes could stand more seasonings, but it's nothing an everyday cook can't figure out.

a totally divergent view, hey.......2002-01-08
you know, i am a book *seller*, not a buyer (nevermind a punkrock 22year vegetarian, thank you) & i was planning on selling this book, especially after reading the initial review of it, where the reader says there are no traditional recipes w/in etc & etc.
but i think that is kind of inaccurate. i really like this book & plan to keep it. a lot of these recipes are ethnic crossovers, it's true, but if traditional (esp eastern-euro-cum-to-america traditional) types are what you are looking for, theyre in here too. i - maybe i am alone in this but i doubt it - for 1, have never seen a vegetarian kishke recipe before. vegan/pareve no less. & youve got yr latkes, yr borscht (beet), 3 kinds of knishes, mock chopped liver, eggless challah..... right beside yr colcannon & tamale pie. here in california we call that making the whole family happy.
i guess there is a more israeli/sephardic bent/cant (whatever) to these recipes than might be initially expected - & i think that makes this book more unusual & more interesting rather than less. recipes like sharon fruit gratin (aka fuyus), galia melon halves w/ port, uppuma, or tofu in walnut pomegranate sauce are unlikely to be found elsewhere. & yes, while the authors do cull some recipes from other book sources, they are primarily from books that would be as easy to find in the states...
& hey, some of us 3d (or 4th or 5th.....) generation freethinkers have never even **seen** these blessings & that, particularly combined w/ the rad recipes, is pretty cool too.
disappointed by recipe selection.......2000-04-16
This book is great for learning about Jewish traditions. But I was disappointed by the selection of recipes. If you take away the Jewish recipe names, it is mostly just a standard collection of vegan recipes. I wanted to learn how to make vegetarian matzoh ball soup, tzimmes, noodle pudding and rugelach. Instead I found recipes for ratatouille, spicy peanut pasta, tamales and baklava. Which would have been fine for an international cookbook, but not what I was looking for in a Jewish cookbook. I ended up returning the book.

Inspiring and touching book, not your average "how to" parenting book..........2007-01-28
I have read probably 50 different baby books from the time I was pregnant til now with my 7 month old...I am an information addict of sorts. Well, I knew this was goign to be a really good one when I started crying through the first chapter about the early days of becoming a mom. I even read some of it outloud to my husband to help explain to him how I've been feeling these past months with our new baby. I felt like finally FINALLY someone is writing about what it REALLY is like to become a mom. For me, the book showed me I was on the right path in listening to my heart and intuition ...not the din of voices and opinions and ideas and theories and techniques and hypothesis etc about what you should or shouldn't do with your baby. I do love knowing about all these different theories and ideas, but when it comes down to it... she's right, "Let the Baby Drive."
Let the Baby Take Over Your Life.......2007-01-18
The book is well-written, and often moving about the early experiences of motherhood. As it goes on, however, you really start to wonder about her choices. It seems she puts aside no burdens, imposes no boundaries or thinks that it is important her child learn to engage with other children outside of his mommy-centric world. The whole book is basically a defense of this tactic, all the while wondering why she feels so isolated in her suburban bliss. There are some good points, but I personally am tired of seeing our modern world over-run with kids and parents raised to expect the whole world to devise entirely new rules & systems just for their 'special' ways.
She ends the book mentioning the importance of finding a 'fine line' between a child's uniqueness and sociability, thought the enire book is really devoted for us to witness this kid doing & saying whatever he wants, while she brings out small violins for herself. Ugh.
the best baby book!.......2006-11-13
this book saved me. as a new mom scared to death and reading everything and everything, it is so hard to decide which approach to take. this book talked to me where i live... getting to know the baby and let him show me the way. there is no one set way to mother this amazing creature. trust your instinct and your heart... my favorite quote, "this twosome shall pass". enjoy every amazing moment.
Insights of a stay-at-home mom with young children.......2006-04-30
Liked the book. It was engaging, realistic, and thought-provoking. Refreshing. The author has a positive view about children without putting children on a pedestal. She also has a productive spin re: the everyday challenges of parenting young kids.

I loved reading Let the Baby Drive. It is an insightful, funny, and touching story of one new mother's experience. We all have our own stories to tell as we find our way with our babies. Lu's story helps us know we are not alone on that journey. She has an incredible ability to convey the exhausting, emotional, exhilarating rollercoaster ride new motherhood is, all contained in a organized, tight knit story that is a joy to read.
I would recommend this book to everyone from future parents to grandparents. Lu allows the reader to enter her world and grow as she did, gaining knowledge all the way.
Let the Baby Drive is now on my list of shower gifts to all the expectant moms I know. Thanks Lu!

Marvelous Little Book of A Great Painter.......2001-08-30
Entrigued with the painting "Votive Portrait of the Vendramin Family" I sought out to learn more of this painter. This book provided such insight in this small yet beautiful expose of his life.
Arranged chronoligically, this book covers the artist's life from his beginnings in Venice with Gentile Bellini. He continues to thrive in Venice, becoming legendary for his portraits. Interesting that what draws me to his works he his legendary for: rich colors and vitality of figures.
Fascinating tidbits of his ties with Reformation and Popes. His supposed last painting, Pieta, has touching self-portrait of his kneeling before Crucified Christ. Touching!
Valuable find that will be referred to.

Okay, I'm no great art critic, just someone who appreciates beautiful art. (Just the type of person this introduction was meant for) All I can say is, the book is like Titian's work --in a word, Sumptious. The soft colors and wonderful capturing of feeling in his subjects make Titian one of the great masters, and this little book gives quality pictures of his work. Granted, the size is small, but one can't expect full-size reproductions for 12 dollars or so. Another neat feature is a list in back of the location of all of Titian's works, as well as a list of all of Titian's contemporaries, mostly Venetian, who influenced him, or vice versa. For that matter, the book even includes examples of the work of some of these artists in the main body. Zuffi's text is sparse but informative; he prefers to let the master's art be the main content, and I think this works quite well. All-n-all, a superb volume!

finally, the " total history" school of thought in a pleasant to read and learn approach. beautifully presented, superb selection of titians works, with background facts relating to various periods in the masters life. a must for anyone into art history.
