Book Description
Ernst Mach (1838-1916) was a seminal philosopher-scientist and a deserving member of the canon of major twentieth-century thinkers. Yet, despite a healthy resurgence in Mach studies, he is still widely thought to represent a simplistic positivist, even sensationalist, position that does not at all reflect the depth of Mach's interests and subtlety as a philosopher. By exploring Mach's views on science as well as philosophy, this book attempts to wrest him free from his customary association with logical positivism and to reinterpret him on his own terms as a natural philosopher and naturalist about human knowledge. Mach's development and his influences from 19th century German philosophy and science are probed in great conceptual and historical detail, and attention is paid to his unpublished
Nachlaß as well as to the affinities between Mach's thought and that of other major philosopher-scientists such as Einstein, Bertrand Russell, William James, Helmholtz, Riemann, Herbart and Kant. In particular, the book strives to set forth the true nature of Mach's sensation-elements, the motivations for his critique of the concepts of space and time in physics, and the real meaning of his famous critique of metaphysics. The author's work has appeared in
Synthese,
Kant-Studien,
Studies in History and Philosophy of Modern Physics and the
Journal of the History of the Behavioral Sciences, but here these inquiries are gathered into a unified historico-critical treatment that follows Mach's conceptual development and the culmination of his work in a unique and intriguing natural philosophy. Physicists, psychologists, philosophers of science, historians of twentieth-century thought and culture, and educators will find this volume a valuable help in interpreting Mach's ideas in a context that includes philosophy and science and the bridge between them.

Book Description
This distinguished organic chemist shares his in depth knowledge of the particular current value of essential oils, for health on all levels. Dr. Schaubelt has a gift for presenting facts and information in a way that is intriguing and easy to assimilate. In the flood of "coffee table" aromatherapy books currently available, this is a much needed and welcome source for those truly interested in taking responsiblity for their own health.
Customer Reviews:
Teaches you so much.......2006-02-28
This book is not for the folks who want to just make Blends.
Its for people who want to know the science behind the oils. What groups each oil belongs in. Which is something everyone must know when blending. You need to know what oils to use if you do not have a certain oil on hand. Plus Kurt has the science down. Reading this book all the way thru will teach you how to use the oils.
So many books out there on blends, but what are you blending?
Kurts book called Advance Aromatherapy is wonderful to. I love both books and have learn so MUCH more then I ever could from other books.
I have learned how to deal with viruses , in depth.
If you are serious about this subject, both of Kurts books are a MUST HAVE.
Scientific Aromatherapy.......2006-01-30
This book continues from where a lot of books on aromatherapy left out. For those of us who are curious about how essential oils actually work, this book provides all the scientific principles. Unlike a lot of other books which merely tell us what the function of the oils are, this book not only goes in depth into the mechanics of aromatherapy, it also provides some revolutionary ideas on the use of essential oils. For practitioners with a science background, this book provides plenty of convincing and credible reasons for the use of aromatherapy in the treatment of various ailments.
However, I'm disappointed with the first half of the book which is overly "political" and has definitely gone overboard in its attack of the medical profession. Skip all that and start from the middle of the book.

Medical Aromatherapy.......2005-12-27
Compared to innumerable other excellent books on the subject aromatherapy, Schnaubelt's book comes up distinctly short on helpful data. For the book to be truly helpful, one must be experienced in the use of oils, and if experienced, the book is all-bar-useless given the dearth of detailed information. It's a snapshot only and, therefore, not useful as a book of reference. Not recommended I'm afraid.
Does not address actual uses for essential oils.......2004-06-19
The book concentrates mainly on the chemical breakdown of various common essential oils, and does not go into any kind of depth on the use of oils. It does not address the title: Healing with Essential Oils. I found it useless and returned it. The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy is a much better text. Also consult Valnet's books for better information.
Medical Aromatherapy: Healing with Essential Oils.......2002-12-19
This book, while loaded with plenty of technical info, LACKS plain, straightforward healing.
A FEW HOURS searching ON-LINE WILL GET YOU THE SAME MEDICAL INFO, WITHOUT WEEDING THRU HUNDREDS OF PAGES OF SCIENTIFIC JARGIN!
Also purchased the oils they are connected with - my experience was the WORST! My adult business experience spans decades and i can say i will never do business with them EVER. They charge the most of any company for oil - there goes the theory "you get what you pay for".

The Sweetened Condense Milk Cookbook.......2002-04-29
I was lucky to find this book that is now "OOP" out of print if you can find it. GET IT!! It has all those wonderful desserts that are featured on the back of the "Bordan's" sweetened condense milk wrapping like; Magic Cookie Bars, Rich Cheesecake, Key Lime Pie just to name a few.
Happy Baking
It's like having your neighbors over for a social.......1999-05-10
Thumbing through this book with my mother, I felt like a child again. All the desserts I grew up on were pictured here.Seeing the names of the towns where the recipe came from, felt like that person made the treat just for me. I have tried many of the recipes and my family and friends rave of my culinary skills. (thanks to the wonderful recipes) This is a book that has to be tried. It will become a favorite in your home like it has in mine.

The convenience of today's technology often costs us in unseen ways; all the e-mails that stream our way can't begin to replace the magic of one handwritten letter. Paper artist extraordinaire Diane Maurer-Mathison knows this well, and has set about redressing the situation in her exquisite The Handcrafted Letter.
From improving our handwriting to getting over writer's block, Maurer-Mathison helps us hone our skills and overcome excuses for not writing. Then she inspires us with dozens of ideas for beautiful missives to friends, lovers, children; inventive thank-you cards, congratulatory cards, travel postcards; and unique holiday and special-occasion cards. A mixture of artful papers and attractive, mostly easy techniques (stenciling, embossing, collage, spatter painting, leaf printing, quilling, paper weaving) yield an array of correspondence that anyone would be thrilled to receive.
Along with project directions and gorgeous photographs, the author provides suggestions for such thoughtful extras as special enclosures (a prepaid phone card, a favorite recipe, a lottery ticket, a packet of scented bubble bath, for example) and artful envelope designs. A brief rundown on making your own decorative paper and a good source list are also included. More than just the decorative veneer that many card-making books address, this guide teaches us how to put real meaning into visually appealing messages. --Amy Handy
Book Description
Handwritten correspondence is coming back into vogue. Letter writing allows us to slow down and consider our thoughts fully before we commit them to paper. And there is something intimate about a hand-written letter that e-mails, typed letters, and even phone calls can't replace. Sending a hand-written letter is like sending a small part of yourself.
Such a letter is more than just a means of communication, it's a gift - and sometimes a legacy. By sharing letters with family and friends, we maintain lifelong relationships and establish and build closeness with those whom we rarely visit in person.
Paper artist Diane Maurer-Mathison has used her design sense and expertise to create this stylish guide to preserving memories in beautiful, heirloom-quality cards and letters. Fully illustrated in color, THE HANDCRAFTED LETTER covers it all. Rediscovering your voice. Correcting handwriting problems. Choosing the best writing implements and paper. Planning and laying out letter projects. Plus all the tricks of the trade: cutting, gluing, cropping photographs, stamping, stenciling, and using decorative-edge scissors. An entire chapter is devoted to decorative paper techniques, including Suminagashi marbling and paste papers. And there are more than 40 projects that will inspire enthusiasts, from love letters and artful envelopes to quilled cards, annual holiday letters, and projects for kids.

Customer Reviews:
OK--but not so great for older onset alzheimers.......2007-04-20
My mother is nearly 90. She's just beginning to develop Alzheimer's. This book would be good for those whose loved ones develop Alzheimer's at an earlier age, but I didn't find it very helpful.
36 Hours.......2007-01-25
Have not finidhed thid publication but have covered approz 125 pages. The info conveyed is excellent and has caused me to modify my approach to my wifs's condition. Unfortunately she has several other probems that complicate the situation. Rgardless this bookis vey helpful so far and I expect the balance to be the same.
Excellent Resource.......2006-12-02
Many books have been written about Alzheimer's disease. However this book gives the reader an easy to understand yet thorough explanation of what a family or caregiver should do when someone (s)he loves or works for has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.
Susan Berg is the author of "Adorable Photographs of Our Baby, Meaningful Mind Stimulating, Activities and More for the Memory Challenged, Their Loved Ones and Involved Professionals".
Alzheimers Early Stages.......2005-09-17
A really informative book that points you in the right direction as far as finances, estate planning etc. I would recommend this book to family members who are caring for someone with this condition.
a godsend.......2005-06-07
I know my family is going to benefit so much from this book. It has what we are looking for -- all types of basic information, about the disease itself and practical caregiving information, presented in a very calming manner. We are in the tricky situation of the affected family member's refusal to go to a doctor, so we don't even have a professional as a guide through this situation....not yet anyway. It is great to have Mr. Kuhn's experience and depth of knowledge, in an easy-to-read and comprehensive guide.

Book Description
Raymond Loewy's name is synonymous with industrial design. His creative vision married the production methodology of the Machine Age to the modern world of mass consumption. The only designer ever awarded a Time magazine cover story, Loewy designed for everyone - from the American housewife, for whom he created the bestselling look of the 1935 Coldspot refrigerator, to President Kennedy, for whom he redesigned Air Force One. Industrial Design presents the pioneering half-century of Loewy's career with photographs of his most famous designs and personal accounts of his life in design. Among the thousands of well-known forms and shapes that he created are the Coca-Cola bottle, the Studebaker, the U.S. Post Office logo, streamlined trains and ocean liners, the Shell and Exxon logos, NASA's Skylab, and the interior of the Concorde. This retrospective, the last book that Loewy wrote, is a testament to his work and to its enduring influence on the look of the twentieth century.
Customer Reviews:
great history.......2000-04-05
This book offers a great history of Industrial Design through the eyes of modern Industrial Designer, Raymond Loewy. I really liked the pictures that take up over half of the book which really emphasize the role that design has played in modern life. Each set of pictures has a detailed description of the what Loewy's connection with it was and how he went about designing it.

Book Description
Between the 1930s and the 1960s, Raymond Loewy's streamlined designs for thousands of consumer goods -- everything from toasters and refrigerators to automobiles and ocean liners -- radically changed the look of American life. Regarded as the father of modern industrial design, he appeared on the cover of Time in 1949; in 1990, he was selected as one of Life's "100 Most Important Americans of the 20th Century." Whether they realized it or not, Americans at mid-century lived in a Loewy-designed world, from the cigarettes they smoked (Lucky Strike's packaging), the soda they drank (the restaurant Coca-Cola dispenser), the toothpaste they used (Pepsodent's toothpaste tube), the cars they drove (his organization was Studebaker's design and styling department), the buses (Greyhound) and trains (the Pennsylvania Railroad) in which they rode, and the department stores (Gimbel's, Foley's, and Lord & Taylor) and grocery stores (Lucky) where they shopped.
Never Leave Well Enough Alone was first published in 1951 at the height of Loewy's career. His company, Raymond Loewy Associates, served as design consultants to more than a hundred of the world's largest corporations, and products manufactured to their specifications sold in excess of $3 billion annually. Written and designed by Loewy, this profusely illustrated book is part autobiography and part design manifesto. Acclaimed for its wit, its idiosyncracies, and its insight into the Loewy aesthetic, this volume stands as a remarkable document of the American Century and a still-vital meditation upon the importance of industrial design in daily life.

Book Description
From car to train design to product packaging, Raymond Loewy has left an indelibly stamp on American culture. Over the 70 years of his career, Loewy, known for streamlined design, created mythical objects which came to be associated with the very image of America itself: The Coca-Cola bottle and truck, the Greyhound bus, the package of Lucky Strike cigarettes, the Studebaker automobile, and much more. This remarkable book recounts the hidden, captivating story of a key figure in the history of American design and includes period and current photos of his most notable designs.

Decent Overview of the Medium.......2002-05-19
Yes, there is the one censored plate, and the author is prudish throughout about shunga prints in general. However, anyone who is purchasing this book for the illustrations will be severely disappointed. There are some color plates in the middle of the work, but the vast majority of plates are reproduced in black in white. This is not a coffee table work with large, full-color illustrations. Nor is it a scholarly treatise on Japanese woodblock prints or a critical appraisal of why certain artists are held in higher regard than others. What it attempts to do is provide a brief overview for the general reader of the careers of the major artists and a historical guide detailing the development of the medium, and within the scope of its modest ambitions it actually works fairly well as an introduction to Japanese woodblock printing.
As stated, this is not for the specialist or the serious collector. The historical details are very general, and it is difficult, based only on this book, to differentiate between the stylistic differences between the various schools. Likewise, the critical evaluations are generally rather vague, and though the book attempts to describe the artists as major and minor, it often does little more than repeat the general wisdom without clearly explaining why an artist is held in such high or low esteem. As far as coverage, the work slants heavily toward 18th century artists and prints, which is a perfectly acceptable bias, but a new collector might be disappointed to find that many of the artists and prints discussed in length are actually generally unobtainable in good condition for those who are not either affiliated with museums or super wealthy. A more serious quibble with the work is that some of the prints (not the majority however) chosen to illustrate examples of the various artists' work are rather idiosyncratically chosen and not terribly representative.
Overall, this isn't a bad place to start for the beginner. There are much better introductions to the medium, but few at this price. The plates, though the majority are in black and white, are easy to see, and the reader gets a fairly serviceable historical overview. One caution however: though the paper is thick, glossy, and generally high quality, the binding is a little flimsy. If you are hard on books, this might not be the one for you.
Shocking.......2001-10-03
I was shocked upon opening this book to find that the one example provided of a "shunga" print (p. 88) had been censored. In discussing Utamaro's prints, the text reads, "...a large part of his work is devoted to this type of subject matter, and it has often been said, with some justice, that he is probably the greatest master of this genre in the entire history of the Japanese print (Plate 36)" Plate 36 then has a large black bar running across the print from left to right, blocking out about 25%, and leaving heads and feet. The caption reads, "Lovers. Shunga, shown here partially masked. About 1790. Ronin Gallery, New York." I find it difficult to trust the judgement of someone who advocates studying an art form "partially masked". If someone is not able to honestly address these prints, s/he may avoid them, but I can`t recommend a critic who feels that s/he has the right to deface them.

A precise, understated gem of a first novel, Julie Otsuka's When the Emperor Was Divine tells one Japanese American family's story of internment in a Utah enemy alien camp during World War II. We never learn the names of the young boy and girl who were forced to leave their Berkeley home in 1942 and spend over three years in a dusty, barren desert camp with their mother. Occasional, heavily censored letters arrive from their father, who had been taken from their house in his slippers by the FBI one night and was being held in New Mexico, his fate uncertain. But even after the war, when they have been reunited and are putting their stripped, vandalized house back together, the family can never regain its pre-war happiness. Broken by circumstance and prejudice, they will continue to pay, in large and small ways, for the shape of their eyes. When the Emperor Was Divine is written in deceptively tranquil prose, a distillation of injustice, anger, and poetry; a notable debut. --Regina Marler
Book Description
Julie Otsuka’s commanding debut novel paints a portrait of the Japanese internment camps unlike any we have ever seen. With crystalline intensity and precision, Otsuka uses a single family to evoke the deracination—both physical and emotional—of a generation of Japanese Americans. In five chapters, each flawlessly executed from a different point of view—the mother receiving the order to evacuate; the daughter on the long train ride to the camp; the son in the desert encampment; the family’s return to their home; and the bitter release of the father after more than four years in captivity—she has created a small tour de force, a novel of unrelenting economy and suppressed emotion. Spare, intimate, arrestingly understated, When the Emperor Was Divine is a haunting evocation of a family in wartime and an unmistakably resonant lesson for our times. It heralds the arrival of a singularly gifted new novelist.

Racist.......2007-10-05
This book can be insulting. For example, the author talks about the Chinese like they are animals, and talks about how poor the Chinese are. This book is SOOO boring. The author stretches out information that was not needed to make the book longer, and that just made this book so useless. There is no point in reading this book.
Totally disappointing. Barely indepth about the camps at all........2007-07-18
I have a deep interest in WWII internment camps, have visited one on a pilgrimage and also visited a Japantown museum. Although a work of fiction, I was very interested in reading this to gain another perspective. Especially as the author is Japanese American, it could be a truly credible story. However, this book was a total disappointment.
I noticed a deliberate lack of details. For example, I've seen pictures of many evacuees gathered near the trains, preparing to depart for their unknown destination and unknown future. Standing next to their 1 suitcase of belongings and whatever else they could carry with them. They had to sell/leave behind their lives, jobs, business, homes, belongings, friends, school, etc. Racism, injustice, sadness, confusion, anger, anxiety... I can only imagine such overwhelming emotions.
This dramatic scene sets the stage for the beginning of the camps but is written in JUST 2 sentences. Basically: the girl & mother woke up, went to the meeting area, put on their ID #'s, grabbed their suitcase, boarded the bus to go. The train moved slowly. Where are the details and emotions??? Where are the thousands of other people? It sounded as if the family was by themselves and they were magically transported to the moving train.
A search of the author reveals her deliberate lack of details is to "universalize" the "ethnic" experience. Why??? Would you universalize the experience of Jewish concentration camps or Muslims in post 9/11? By doing so, you mislead the readers about actual events and downplay the harsh reality of their inhumane experiences. That's really offending to those who were interned. Almost as bad Michelle Malkin denying the camps ever happened.
I was appalled when she described the boy's first impression of camp life, p49. "For it was true, they all looked alike. Black hair. Slanted eyes. High cheekbones. Thick glasses. Thin lips...The little yellow man." Even if this is a fiction book from a boy's point of view in the 1940's, I would never expect a JA to write like that, about her own ethnicity even. Nothing could be further from the truth. Would you say that a room full of blonde-haired, blue-eyed, big-nosed, bushy-browed, pale-skinned Caucasians all look the same? Sadly, she only emphasizes false stereotypes.
Ironically, she wastes WAY too much efforts describing details of non-important things. E.g. p41, she spends nearly a whole page detailing how the boy and girl draw a picture of the father.
Curiously, the back of the book credits only 5 books. An interview mentioned she read oral history collections & secondary source books. How about interviewing living internees? How about visiting actual camp ruins? How about visiting the last 3 Japantowns in the U.S., which have museums and tons of JA camp resources? Oh wait, she doesn't need to do any indepth pointless research because she omits all details anyways.
I felt as if this book only made it very apparent about her lack of knowledge about the camps and her own ethnic Japanese background.
I really don't understand her purpose in writing this book. She would have been MUCH better off writing a book about a minority family in the 1950's and which has nothing to do with WWII JA camps. Why write this kind of historical novel, just to leave out all the important details? Do not read this book if you are expecting any understanding of the camps.
Fantastic!.......2007-05-09
I really enjoyed this book. She writes the book in 3rd person and it really adds to the sense of invisibility of the family. The book is reflective in nature in that we are told what happens and how it feels to the characters as opposed to experiencing them as they happen. I found this book very thought provoking and timely.
Seems to be a lot like another book- to much so.......2007-03-18
As an elementary school teacher I read a book entitled, "Journey to Topaz". It was a fabulous book. As I began to read "The Emperor was Divine" I got the strange feeling I'd read it before. I am almost certain the author of "The Emperor was Divine" has too. There are way to many similiarities. I suppose it is entirely possible that they lived an almost identical life as it's a big world. Based on copywrite "Journey to Topaz" was written first. I enjoyed it more-perhaps because the characters were far better developed and the storyline was original. It makes me wonder?
sansei1.......2006-09-18
I had mixed feelings about this book before I read it. The title is NOT how most JA immigrants felt about the emperor of Japan. There was generally no love lost. Most, like my grandparents, left because of poverty, conscription, alienation, and to look for better oportunites in America, lika a lot of other immigrants. While reading the book, I give her kudos for her ability to describe events visually well. BUT...there are many problems with this book. There is this sterility in the manner in which she describes events. She can manage to paint a visually stunning picture with her words but there is no substance. Her characters seem as if she studied them from a textbook. A Nisei (second generation) young girl would NEVER talk in the manner in which she writes, to an elder!!! Its almost like she had Dakota Fanning in mind for this character. And the father character, an Issei (first generation)....Issei's used to swallow their pain. The Issei are known for their stoic strength and "gaman", quiet strength amidst adversity. I felt isulted by his mental confession in the book. I went to see the author at a local library and she did confess she NEVER interviewed ANY living internees. My god...they are dying off and she doesn't interview them? She said she wanted a more "pure" viewpoint. She said she did study books for her historical references. Indeed, there are some references in the book which I'm not quite sure if it is plagiarism, like in the description of the flies bothering her characters and then when they put up screens, it gets better. See Mine Okubo's book Citizen 13660, which Otsuka does reference. That scene is in there. I can see where the sterility feeling I got came from---if she only studied books and didn't get a feel for the emotional aspect that is buried in a lot of interness...she only did her homework half-baked.There are SO many heartbreaking stories that are dying and being buried with the internees. She confessed she didn't really listen when her parents and grandparents talked about it and they would shut up when she'd come around. But she said she didn't really ask them either, only marginally later. What IS her interest here? A book bestseller to be touted among the Asian community? I didn't really get from her interviewed she cared deeply for what happened, it was just a good base for her story. My parents told me everything and I am grateful. I am insulted by this book. It is like looking at a painting of a pretty scene but the artist who created didn't really care about anything but rendering a pretty scene. I was fairly disgusted by the time I left the interview from the library.
She's a grad of Columbia? She needs to study more. This is a great book if you think Snow Falling on Cedars is wonderful.
