An intimate look at addiction from the inside...........2006-12-18
This book written by Christina Grof, a transpersonal psychologist provides an inside view of addiction and a unique perspective on addiction as a search for wholeness. The most stiking aspect of this book and where I feel the most value lies is in the author's vulnerability in sharing her own struggle with addiction.
I don't necessarily agree with all of the ideas in this volume. However, I found Christina's courage and deep sharing to be inspiring. Whether you agree with Grof's specific interpretation of addictive psychology or not, her words illuminate the challenges of the human condition in a poignant way.
While I rated this book a 4 other people I have shared it with who are struggling with addictions thought it was either the best or one of the best books they have read on this topic. All of them found it to be meaningful and many were extremely grateful to find it after having read some of the other more popular books written about this area.
The last section of the book talks about the promise of healing and spiritual maturity. It also speaks about recovery as a spiritual path. More importantly, it considers the challenges along the way and includes the personal experiences of the author.
If you are struggling with an addiction you will find a lot of encouragement and empathy between these pages. This author truly understands what it is to be addicted, the deep dynamics involved and how to get untangled from these dynamics through a spiritual approach.
A Must Have Book for Those Seeking a Deeper Connection with Themselves.......2006-11-01
Everyone I know is addicted to something: control, power, self-centeredness, alcohol, drugs, food, sex, beauty, body image, jobs, other people...the list goes on and on. The world is not an easy place in which to "be". The reality is that we are living in a world full of broken people "where men who are fractions imagine themselves to be complete," as Joseph Campbell wrote. We live in an age where man is more profoundly a stranger to his own soul than at any other time in history.
On the other hand, millions of individuals are undergoing life altering transformations, thanks to the many tools for self exploration available today. One of those tools is this book. Grof, like few other authors, gets to the root causes of society dis-ease: the spiritual thirst of our being for wholeness. This book is not about religion, but instead is a soulful description of the spiritual journey.
If you are a counselor, you need this book. If you are searching for healing from any type of addiction, or feel a stranger inside your own skin, you need this book. On some level, we could all benefit from embracing the message contained within its pages.
Our entire journey through life is a heroic journey toward home -- our True Self. As T.S. Eliot writes,
"We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time."
Book Description
An extensive manual for surviving without wheat or gluten, including a resource guide, shopping tips, and a listing of support groups for celiacs.
Customer Reviews:
extremely uneven.......2004-09-18
This book has multiple personalities. One is a personal story of coming to terms with having celiac disease. Another is lists of resources for the gluten intolerant. And a third kind of mixes the two -- tells how the author was able to come to terms with things because she developed strategies for living and eating.
First of all, it's really important to know that a lot of the information about what you can and can't eat is just plain wrong. Some of that is because these things become outdated quickly, but some is less understandable than that. For instance, she says that while cream soups are likely to have gluten in them, broths won't. That's totally untrue -- most of the common brands of broth do have gluten in them. And it's a particularly odd mistake to be making given that on other things, she advocates being far more careful than the standard resources do. Like she says don't use distilled vinegar because it MIGHT be distilled from wheat, but again, everything else I've read on this subject says that 1) it's probably not distilled from wheat but more importantly 2) the distillation process removes gluten.
So if you're going to get this book, get it for the personal part, about how she dealt with her diagnosis. It's pretty entertaining and there's some value to being reminded that you're not the only one. That said, while I think it's valuable to have something to read in that area, I'd say she's more than just slightly eccentric. A lot of her stories about how her friends reacted to her diagnosis seem like extreme worst-case scenarios -- suffice it to say that I was diagnosed long before I was as sick as she describes herself as having been, yet my friends were a lot more sympathetic than she says hers were.
Finally, with regard to her strategies for living. Another review here mentions that they're sort of for the caviar set, and I have to agree. These are instructions for someone who not only has a LOT of money to spend on special-ordered foods, but who feels comfortable asking restaurant staffs to go way out of their way to accommodate her.
On the whole, I'd say there are better resources than this book. Some of them are online, others are informational books like Shelley Case's "Gluten-Free Diet: A Comprehensive Resource Guide." But if you want to read everything you can on celiac disease and living gluten-free, this is at least entertaining.
a must-have, for the wheat-intolerant "newbie".......2004-01-28
I've had this book since late August '03, and already I have probably read through the entire thing about 4 or 5 times..and it's still great! Not only does it have tons of information, tips, & recipes, ...it is HILARIOUS! Reading it makes me feel like maybe i'm not the biggest weirdo for having to dissect my food in front of everyone at a dinner party. I swear, any celiac/wheat intolerant person who reads this will finally be able to laugh out loud at all the funny/eccentric things (i.e. eating caviar w/ a spoon, bringing your own rice pasta to Italian restaurants) that one tends to go through with gluten/wheat intolerance. Especially after you've just been diagnosed (as I had), it's great to know that there's someone else out there who has the same annoying issues as i do (i.e. difficulty eating out at restaurants, dining with friends), and can offer some good advice on how to cope.
So, the next time you're down in the dumps because you had to sit through your neighbor's pizza party by munching on peanuts and carrot sticks (and gathering weird/pitiful looks from others at the same time), don't sit and mope..go and read "Against the Grain" and you'll be a happier camper!
chatty but sloppy.......2003-04-12
Some of the advice in this book is great, especially on suggestions for enjoying meals socially without feeling like a freak. However, based on the title and the author's condition, it's easy to assume that the only foods recommended in the book are gluten-free, and that's not true. Several of the recipes and purchased-food recommendations are wheat-free, but not gluten-free, and are NOT clearly identified as such. I found the tone to be rather snobbishly superior, as well- perhaps a nice book for those in the caviar-eating set, but not written for the unprivileged who can not expect to be waited on hand and foot or to be able to afford all the specialty foods the author considers necessities.
The Celiac's Bible.......2002-09-02
Along with the words, you have Celiac-Sprue Disease, your GI doctor should hand you this book and tell you to go home and read it. A diagnosis of Celiac seems overwhelming and the diet restrictive. The author uses humor and common sense along with personal experience to ease the pain and educate the consumer reading the book. Although a Gluten-Free diet is unlike any other, you can get a good, basic feel for it using this book. It helps to get one over the hump and on the road to wellness. I highly recommend this book. If you have Celiac Disease do yourself a favor and get it, if you have a friend or loved one with the disease show them that you care.
A must-read for anyone going gluten-free or wheat-free.......2001-05-28
This is not a cookbook (although there are a few recipes in the back). It's more like a survival manual or a book-length pep talk, specifically written for people with celiac sprue, which is a severe form of gluten intolerance. But I'm finding the ideas and encouragement are applicable to anyone who is gluten-free or wheat-free for any reason, and in fact they're even worth skimming by anyone dealing with food allergies or other significant dietary changes (such as cutting out dairy or sugar). It's a funny and well-written book, including sections on anti-cheating strategies, restaurant assertiveness training, and etiquette for people with dietary restrictions, along with the expected list of product suggestions (with extensive mail-order information). I've looked at a *lot* of special diet cookbooks and guidebooks in the past couple of years, and have been disappointed by most of them because they frankly haven't had much in them that I hadn't already learned somewhere. This book is a fresh exception. I would have liked to see more specifics on various baking substitutions (maybe in the next edition?), and there is a lot of product information that may be regional or get outdated (so I expect a second edition would be a good idea), but even with those minor imperfections I still would highly recommend this book.

A Model Railroader Looks at Garden Railroading.......2005-09-01

You will certainly save the cost of this book many times over as you use its guidelines to make effective planning and purchasing decisions.

Garden Railroading is a good place to start, but you'll need more!.......2005-09-21
Garden Railroading is a good place to start. It gave me some great general knowledge, but I have to admit it was missing some much needed information. I know nothing about small trains and was looking for more information as to the sizes available. Off to the hobby store (an hour away).
Good Collection of Great Articles.......2005-09-01
This is a collection of beginner-oriented articles from Garden Railroading magazine. This is not a single "how-to" source as much as it is a source of encouragement. It is also a great companion to Allan Miller's book, as it fills in some of the (admittedly small) gaps and shows a few alternative ways to accomplish things. Many people appreciate the great photos, which also appeared in Garden Railways magazine at one time. Authors include Jack Verducci, Pat Hayward, Marc Horovitz, Kevin Strong and many other best-known writers on the subject of Garden Railroading.

Good comparative study of US and Canadian national parks.......2007-08-07
This book examines national parks in the United States and Canada, two neighboring countries with extensive park systems. Clearly each of these countries can learn from the other's experience, and Lowry's book is an excellent introduction to the similarities and differences in the two park systems. He also provides extensive discussion of a sampling of parks in each country, some well-known and others not well-known at all.
Lowry's central theoretical framework examines political support for the parks and the degree of consensus on the goals for parks. He treats these as if they were exogenous, independent variables. However, clearly the political economy of each country affects these goals. A pro-development agency such as the Army Corps of Engineers enjoys political consensus because it operates in a pro-development political system. It's hard to know how you could change the Corps (or many other agencies) without changing the political system as a whole.
The research and most of his writing reflects the Reagan and G. H. W. Bush administrations, which were hostile to the environment. Thus, his book casts US politics as generally "bad," while Canadian policies are generally "good." However - - as he realizes - - the history of the two park systems is very different, and for most of the twentieth century he would have classified Parks Canada as having worse policy than the US National Park Service.
To better understand the two countries, Lowry should distinguish more clearly between the legislative and executive factors affecting the parks. As Lowry acknowledges, Clinton's Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt had very different priorities than the Reagan and Bush administrations, yet the system of congressional pork remained unchanged. Understanding park policy means separating out changes in executives from continuities in the legislature. Moving outside his framework of consensus and support to consider executive-legislative relations would be helpful.
Looking more closely at executive-legislative relations would also enrich his comparison of the US and Canada. Obviously, Canada's parliamentary system works very differently than the presidential system in the United States. Ironically, Lowry does discuss the differences in federalism in the two countries, though in a global perspective there are more similarities than differences between US and Canadian federalism.
Those objections aside, this is a notable book. The literature on national parks is dominated by historians, and it is welcome to have a different discipline's perspectives on the issues.
CHEERS Mr. Lowry! Yet, aren't we now in need of a sequel?.......1997-11-23
I've lived in, worked for, and studied the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) and I can confirm that Lowry has done his homework well. This book is more than just a voice crying in wilderness. Lowry not only exposes the problems, he offers very viable solutions that merely need the political support of the common man to be implimented. Unfortunately, since this book's publication things have gotten worse, especially in Canada. One of my biggest frustrations has always been that the American public doesn't know the extent to which self-serving congressional interests are ruining our national treasures by preventing the NPS from doing its congressionally mandated mission of historic and natural preservation. It's not just budget cuts folks! As Lowry explains, its mega-cooperation owned concessions exploiting visitors at the expense of the very ecological health of parks in the name of "visitor services." It's scientific research intentionally poorly funded and results ignored, or worse yet, severely censored before they are allowed to be released to the general public. And it's all here, well documented in "The Capacity for Wonder" including scores of interviews with rangers from all over the continent who haven't given up... yet. This book is for all of us rangers who dare not speak because we have to feed our families, and for all you voters and tax payers who do "GIVE A DAMN!" but until now, just don't quite have enough accurate information to act.

solid grammar.......2002-05-01
This is an old book but still one of the best in terms of presenting all the grammar in a straightforward and comprehensible fashion. It has everything the intermediate language learner needs on the road to acquiring the level of sophistication of an advanced learner. The review exercises consist of sentences, out of context but generic enough not to be outdated, even after all these years. For a quick reference or for some serious grammar study, this book is still the best, especially for the price. Excellent for ESL students who are ready to move to a native-speaker text.

Not for beginners.......2005-05-30
The central issue in an autobiography is the character of its author. Ugaki's is replete with what he calls "Navy fighting spirit." He's sentimental, about family, lost friends and Nature. He's positive, in the worst circumstances. He's the quintissential naval officer; but, like Halsey, his strengths are also weaknesses. He understands his enemy, but underestimates him. He attacks when he should consolidate or retreat. He divides forces in the face of an enemy of unknown strength. He always "takes the bait." He never questions the logic of serving a government that has no more steering than a barge. Because his book reveals what he knew and when he knew it, it corrects misappreciations on both sides. It also exculpates Truman for dropping the Bomb, as it describes Japan's reserves hoarded against invasion and records fanatical desire to use them to the last man. Why did Ugaki commit suicide?--to take responsibility, obliged to atone for failing. He says his death will help keep alive naval spirit until Japan can rise again. Like other fascists, he blames men, not their ideology, for defeat, while looking forward to the next war. Despite his penchant for poetry, Ugaki is not a complicated man. He deserves the respect due to all those who live by a code not of their own making. His book is a study of one such man. I found it difficult to read, because of the form imposed on it as a diary and the ubiquitous feeling that Ugaki is writing for History. Read this book after you've read others about the Pacific War; it pulls missing pieces together--for example, that the Japanese were reading Allied codes, too. For a first-hand look at the consequences of decisions Ugaki made in abstraction, read Tamaichi Hara's "Japanese Destroyer Captain."
A True-to-Life Account.......1999-12-12
Though I am a Japanese American born after WWII, I wanted to know what was going through the minds of the Japanese in Japan who decided to bomb Pearl Harbor and get involved in the conflict. This book got me about as close as I could get to talking to someone high up and powerful in the Japanese naval command. The highs, the lows, the delusions, the misconceptions, the hopes, aspirations - they are all clearly laid out. The account of Yamamoto's death and Ugaki's survival is better than an Indiana Jones-tale. The main thing you come away with is this man's patriotism and devotion to a misguided cause. Ugaki and Japan seriously misjudged their strength versus the power and resources of the United States and their allies.
A unique account of the Pacific War.......1999-09-05
Anyone who calls themselves a true historian of the Pacific War should read this book. There are a variety of things that make this "Fading Victory" unique and important. First and foremost, Ugaki was one of Japan's leading military men and he was privy to the Japanese planning of much of the Pacific War. His mistakes, conceptions of the wartime situation, and commentary on the Allied victories and defeats create a new dimension to the Pacific War that standard histories do not provide. Furthermore, the account, unlike other wartime accounts, was not doctored or recalled years after the event. This means that what Ugaki wrote in, say June 4, 1942, is how Ugaki perceived the situation as it happened. Finally, "Fading Victories" also details the gradual defeat of Japan and how a Japanese patriot perceived it. It is almost sad to hear Ugaki in 1945 speak of countering raids by hundreds of American planes with a mere handful of Jpanese aircraft. If this were not enough, Ugaki also writes extremely well and the editors did a fantastic job of correcting him and presenting what really happened. The net result is that Ugaki's own biases become readily apparent. Do not pass this one up!
Excellent war journal written by Admiral Ugaki........1998-09-23
I wondered whether this was going to be a boring self-serving narrative, but once I started reading it, it was so interesting that I couldn't stop. Ugaki details his day to day activities and lets you know his opinions and insights as he goes along. You get to like the guy, even though you know, in some cases, he's trying to fool himself about who's going to win the war. He is involved in just about everything in the Pacific War, and he narrates nicely. One of the best parts that you look forward to is where he and Yamamoto are shot down by U.S. planes. (Yamamoto is killed, but Chief of Staff Ugagki survives miraculously.) - The editor of this book every now and then corrects Ugaki (in italics) when Ugaki makes claims, such as ships sunk and planes shot down. This is extremely helpful, else you might think like Ugaki. This way you can sort of analyze Ugaki and where he's coming from. - Ugaki, the consumate samurai ends the book by demanding a kamakazi plane so he can die gloriously by sinking an enemy ship. He is unsuccessful. In the end, you sort of like and admire the guy. Very good reading if you are into the Japanese version of the Pacific War.
