4 out of 5 stars Reading their Minds by Magic.......2003-03-03

One of the most closely guarded secrets of World War II was the breaking of the Japanese military and diplomatic codes. It allowed continuous knowledge of Japanese plans and operations, and allowed victory against an enemy with sometimes greater forces. It enhanced the US submarine service against Japanese shipping. The author worked in Navy communications intelligence in Washington during the entire war. They read and translated intercepted messages. This 1978 book says FDR did not expect to provoke Japan into direct aggression against the United States (p.1). Scapegoats were found to placate a people shocked by Pearl Harbor, even if the scapegoats had not been told all (p.2).

If it is true that military leaders prepare for the next war from their experiences in the last war, it is also true that those who fail to learn from the past are destined to relive it. In 1904 Japan attacked the Russian Far Eastern Fleet before they declared war. Destroying their fleet won the war; Japan had no hope or plan to invade on land. The loss of Hawaii would push America back to the West Coast, and America would not pursue this war with Hitler's Germany in control of Europe.

America used the strategy of island-hopping to maximize its resources. They knew the enemy's strengths and weaknesses, their moves and countermoves. Destroying their merchant marine and oil tankers reduced their ability to defend effectively, and made attacks impossible. America's superior productive capacity and manpower would have won the war. Code breaking shortened the war by at least a year. This story on naval communications intelligence tells of the whole war in the Pacific, and other operations of the worldwide war.

On Jan 27, 1941 Ambassador Grew in Tokyo reported the talk that Japan would begin war with "a surprise mass attack on Pearl Harbor" (p.58). Naval Intelligence stated "no move against Pearl Harbor appears imminent". The book "Day of Deceit" suggests more was known than was told.

One mistake of the Japanese submariners was their disdain for merchant shipping. They learned nothing from WW I practices. Their pattern of shipping was not efficient either (p.153). The US knowledge of shipping location and contents allowed selective targets. Convoys were scorned because it was defensive, not offensive warfare. US submarines concentrated on tankers, this fuel shortage affected Japanese military operations (p.161).

Chapter 8 tells about island-hopping - bypassing some of the most powerful Japanese bases because of limited resources. This was fortunate, since it avoided a higher number of casualties. Chapter 9 tells about the battle of Leyte Gulf, and how Admiral Halsey withdrew his fleet from San Bernadino Strait. While the Japanese fleet passed without hindrance, Admiral Kinkaid's fleet at Surigao Strait stood guard (p.188). Chapter 10 tells of the plan to use strategic bombing and a naval blockade to bring about a surrender without an invasion of Japan (p.204). Chapter 11 notes that the new American empire after WW II was inevitably to be followed by a Time of Troubles (p.206). The Yalta Conference got Stalin's pledge to attack Japan three months after the surrender of Germany. The Soviet Union declared war on Japan on August 8, and Japan surrendered on August 14.

3 out of 5 stars The Pacific War in 215 pages.......2001-03-21

Deadly Magic is a short and pleasant survey of the Pacific theater of World War II. All of the major campaigns are here (although Iwo Jima is relegated to two brief paragraphs). Although it purports to be a "personal account of communications intelligence" a large portion of the text simply and quickly goes through the various battles. There is virtually nothing about HOW the break into Purple was made and in fact there is very little about the actual cryptanalysis that went on. Van der Rhoer says in the Prologue that he "kept no diary and possess(es) no documentary files" -- the book is purely based on personal reminiscences. Perhaps it is author's license, but in light of this I found it annoying that he was able to "recall" in minute detail exactly what happened on his first trip to Washington -- "...two secretaries seated at desks facing the door, one of them casting a blank stare at her typewriter as she eased the cover off a cardboard container of coffee". Not bad memory after 35 years..... I found a couple of things more than a bit odd. Although I understand that the author was attached to Op-20-G (the Washington based arm of the codebreakers), I found it amazing that there was not a single mention of Joseph Rochefort or Station Hypo and its critical contributions. In fact, if one did not know otherwise, you would easily be led to believe that it was the Washington folks who won the Battle of Midway -- the famous anecdote concerning the fresh-water supplies at Midway never sees the light of day in the book. The book is adequate but I think the reader will get an incomplete (and very one sided) view of MAGIC. Two much more complete sources to follow up with are Combined Fleet Decoded by John Prados, and Frank Rowlett's The Story of Magic (Rowlett is known as "the man who broke Purple".)

        Book Description

Translated from the German with an introduction. This is the first volume of the Jewish Bookshelf, a collection of the best Jewish books written from the time of the completion of the Talmud to the present day. Maimonides (the Rambam) was the intellect of the 12th century. He was not a solider, cared nothing about the crusades or war, but was interested in almost everything else. He was the rabbi, judge, leader, philosopher and teacher of his nation. He was equally proficient as a metaphysician and physician. This book is an attempt to add the quietly colorful page of his life to the chapter of the Crusades.

"If you are carbohydrate addicted, this book will give you the information you need to literally eliminate your cravings for starches, snack foods, or sweets and get control over your eating and your life--at any age, through all the decades to come--and without sacrifice. You will be able to lose weight and greatly decrease your risk for virtually all of [America's] top killer diseases. You will get the guidance you need to make the lifestyle change you have been waiting [for] for so long. And, in addition, you will gain the courage and conviction that your hunger, cravings, and weight problems are not your fault, and as the pounds fade, so will your guilt and self-blame." So begins The Carbohydrate Addict's Lifespan Program, a book especially tailored for those 40 and over, especially menopausal women and those who were prescribed Fen-Phen. Its premise is simple--it's designed to help you rid your body of excess insulin. When excess insulin is circulating through the body, it's virtually impossible to lose weight, say Richard and Rachael Heller, both research scientists and professors and authors of the bestselling Carbohydrate Addict's Diet.

They've created a sympathetic and clear guide for keeping insulin levels--and therefore food cravings--in check, with plenty of appealing and easy-to-prepare recipes, including low-fat Chicken Kiev and Herby Crabmeat Salad. A stress-reduction plan, progress charts, meal plans, and comprehensive index are included.--Erica Jorgensen

I didn't find this book as good for me and my tastes.

1 out of 5 stars The Carbohydrates Addict's Lifespan Program: Personalized Plan for Becoming Slim,Fit & Healthy in your 40's, 50's and 60's and .......2006-07-09

I was expecting simple daily meal plans and it was a lot of reading and recipes that are not always food items on hand. I was really disappointed in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Health and Success Thru Planning.......2005-11-13

When I first tried this "diet" I was feeling very sick--obese and lethargic and completely down; I felt like this was my last chance.

After THREE DAYS on this plan, I felt 100% better. I didn't have the swelling in my feet and legs; I didn't have the bloating I had been experiencing. The first week I lost 10 lbs; the second week I lost 5 lbs; the third week, another 5 lbs. After that, I settled down to between .5 and l.5 lbs a week.

As long as I follow the plan, I feel great and lose weight or maintain weight depending on what I am trying to do.

This is the best "diet" for me because I don't have to weigh anything, I don't have to measure anything in detail (eye measure is about it) and once I had been on the plan for a few weeks, I knew exactly what I could and couldn't eat. Its the first plan that has really worked for me and been relatively plainless as well.

5 out of 5 stars Works for me!.......2005-09-06

This book definitely has a lot of great info in it. I have been following the plan since `June and have lost 64 pounds so far. I am never hungry and my cravings are controlled. If carbs are an issue for you, I definitely suggest you give it a read. At the price you can get it used on here, I can't see why you wouldn't want to check it out! It is definitely about a lifestyle change though, not a quick fix. :)

                4 out of 5 stars A Real Eye Opener.......2005-09-04

The book was elightening and encouraging. The eating guidlines appear to be do able. I did not realize food combinations were so criticle to my overall health and how that in itself can cause weight loss.

                          Book Description

Explore the foods of the Iberian table, from the paellas of Valencia to the salt cod fritters of Oporto to the tapers of Seville. Part cookbook, part travelogue, Savoring Spain & Portugal celebrates the regional character and respect for tradition that prevail in the kitchens of Spain & Portugal. Beautiful photos and illustrations contribute to this portrait of a region where good food enjoyed in a leisurely fashion is an everyday affair.

2 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere for better portuguese coverage.......2005-01-11

This book treats spanish and portuguese cuisine almost interchangeably when both really deserve more distinction from each other (the "iberian penninsula" is a rather broad umbrella for two countries that are quite different). I received this book for christmas and have since prepared several of the recipes for native-portuguese family members. The portugal inclusion feels like an after-thought on many occasions.

                          Overall points:

                          - every other page jumps to a different region in either Spain or Portugal and is labeled by that region. For people new to spanish/portuguese cooking this may not be very helpful. The recipes could be organized more clearly and logically.

                          - a book on portuguese cooking with no pasteis de nata? This is a PT staple up there with balinhos de bacalhau. Again, an afterthought.

                          - some of the portuguese history is off. The native PT family got a good laugh from reading it. I don't recall the things they said were wrong, but then again I'm not the editor for the book.

                          - on an up note, the piri piri sauce recipe to mimic the the one found at Bonjardein in Lisbon is actually pretty decent.

At the end of the day, look elsewhere for a book dedicated to portuguese cuisine if that's what you are interested in (I'm unable to recommend an alternative as I'm fortunate enough to get mine straight from family). This book seems to gloss over Portugal, but I'm not surprised as the author is from california.

                          5 out of 5 stars Iberian Nostalgia.......2004-11-04

An absoutely lush publication containing scads of authentic recipes from Portugal and Spain. Photography and lithography are top notch.
Aside from the great recipes, the book covers much of the regional culture, practices and history of the Iberian Penninsula. Perhaps I am a bit biased since I and my family lived in Portugal and traveled in Spain. I often re-visit the book for nostalgia (saudades) and the wonderful recipes.

4 out of 5 stars Good for any cookbook library.......2004-01-27

Though some of the most interesting food in Western Europe comes from the Iberian peninsula, relatively little is known in the U.S. With a broad mixing of flavors from northern Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, this cuisine is far more diverse in its attitude, ingredients, and textures than its European counterparts. I've tried several of the recipes almost all with good success. The one fatally flawed recipe: seafood fideo, which allowed a miniscule 10 minutes cooking time for raw artichoke hearts. On these your heart really will choke.

                          5 out of 5 stars Excelente!.......2003-05-16

This cookbook contains by far the most wonderful recipes (and beautiful photos to match!) of Iberian cooking. I've prepared many of the recipes (not just one like a fellow reviewer) and have found the dishes to be absolutely delectable. I received rave reviews from friends and family. If you love this cuisine, this book is a wonderful investment!

1 out of 5 stars Nourishing Rice....more like Die from Sodium overdouse.......2001-10-26

I made the nourishing rice recipie on this book...I know, I know it may be unfair to judge a book by only trying one recipie but ...I would think the purpose of an cookbook author is to help the buyers to succeed not to just look at the pretty picture and be disappointed with the results.
Anyways, I tried the "Nourishing Rice" recipe and I was highly disappointed, for one, the end result was not only salty but also soggy, and with the inmense amount of meats versus the rice ratio, the recipie should have been called "Nourishing Pork" not rice.
I think this recipie will not only benefit from the addition of half chicken stock and half water if not the omission of the chicken stock altogether which in the end does not add flavor since it is overpowered by the strong pork/ham/chorizo flavors...and it would help control the salt problem.
I should have known better with the ratio presented but I gave it a try since a lot of people seem to believe she is an authority on the spanish cooking scene.(which makes me wonder how many of them exactly have tried her recipies)
I know I made no mistakes while preparing this recipe, I grew up on this cuisine, and I honestly think that if this is what the best has to offer with all their culinary schooling; I am better off skiping the schooling and putting the money towards publishing my own book!!!
What a waste of my money.
By the way I would take my case to any kitchen against the author and more than prove my point.

While filled with brightly processed color photos and modern typesetting gimmicks this book has little substantive information on stocking your garden pond. The section on koi, however, stands out. The pictures are good and the explanation of the basic types of koi are good. This book is published as a magazine also, and doesn't quite make it to coffee-top status. So I recommend looking for the magazine (cheaper), or buying one of Axelrod's books on koi, of which there are many.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of fun dying with this book!.......2006-05-03

I checked this book out of our local Library, hoping to learn a few things... I liked it so much, I didn't want to take it back to the library, so I had to buy it!
Once you have a little knowledge in dying, you will be able to create your own colorways with just some fairly inexpensive materials, a little time, experimentation and space. My biggest problem was finding a place to wind my 40 foot skeins.
If you are a novice dyer, you may want to start with something a little more simple, but it won't take you long to step up to this. There are some patterns included and she also give "recipes" for the colorways shown in the book... INCLUDING the now famous on Yahoo Sock Knitters... The self patterning watermelon yarn!

2 out of 5 stars Could have been better..........2006-01-24

I got this book for the 'secret to self-patterning yarns'. Okay, this really could have been done in a much smaller book, foccusing on just the dyeing technique.

the author threw in a bunch of patterns with a recipe method that will allow you to replicate their results somewhat, but I don't want to replicate their results, I want my own. For getting folks started on dyeing, this book will be just as good as any other dyeing book, but would not be my first recommendation.

The patterns are also a little disappointing.

I never would've imagined myself as a dyer until I read this book. Taylor's instructions are simple and detailed - you can't go wrong following her lead. For those who don't want to dye but only want to knit, Taylor's patterns are excellent. Not only are the instructions simple and down-to-earth, but the patterns fit, so even a novice knitter can experience success. In addition to these fine qualities, the book is beautifully designed. I highly recommend it!

3 out of 5 stars Really only for dyers, not knitters........2005-07-04

I got this book out of curiousity and hope that it might help me with my addiction to patterned yarns, which tend towards the expensive. The information on dying was not really geared towards a beginner like me, and the list of equipment, the amount of experimentation and the techniques I'd have to learn made me appreciate why the yarn I buy is so expensive, but I simply couldn't understand a lot of it. I have sent it onwards to a friend of mine who specializes in dyeing fabrics (in hopes she will venture into the world of hand-dyed yarns). In addition, the patterns offered to knit with the yarns provided were not at all inspiring. Definitely look in this book before you buy!

In The Moral Intelligence of Children, Robert Coles outlines his considerable experience with the moral thinking of children. He finds that even the very young can reason using sophisticated moral logic, and makes numerous recommendations for how parents might try to raise a virtuous child. Sadly, I cannot recommend this book to a wide audience, as its fundamental assumptions have not been borne out by modern research.

Coles argues that children learn what moral behavior is through observation and immersion. In this regard he is similar to the Russian psychologist Vygotsky. Unfortunately, a great deal of research since Vygotsky's death causes me to doubt Coles' claims. Some of the evidence against this claim is found in W. Rottschaefer's Biology and Psychology of Moral Agency. In particular, infants as young as a few weeks display empathic behaviors, and this tendency grows immensely over the first year. It is hard to imagine how a child's moral sophistication is related to the observation of parents when their empathic behavior develops at such a young age, faced with no moral problems of their own.

Additional evidence comes from Jonathan Haidt's social institutionist model of moral reasoning. Haidt feels that morality does develop from a social context, but demonstrates that the "reasons" offered by adults and children, however cute or sophisticated, are little more than rationalizations for deeper emotions inherited from earlier development.

Finally, even if kids did learn from their parents, as soon as the child steps out of the home his reasoning will be shaped by his peers, not by his parents. To date, there is no compelling evidence that parents have a significant impact on the morality or personality of their kids beyond their genetic contribution. Judith Harris utterly crushed that area of research in her book, The Nurture Assumption.

Coles' book is full of interesting stories in a fairly warm and talkative style. If you're as fascinated by children and their stories about themselves and each other as I am, you'll enjoy this book. Just don't take it too seriously as a manual for raising your child.

That Robert Coles' heart is in the right place and that his experience working with children is extensive, no one can dispute. But his writing is characterized by wordiness - even chattiness - and it undermines the serious nature of his topic. Perhaps the loose writing style is an attempt to make the book appeal to "every parent," - and not just educators - but instead it renders the whole work laborious and permeated with a condescending, patronizing tone. In the current political culture, a book on the moral life of children written by an educator of Coles' calibre would be expected to nail a spot on the N.Y. Times bestseller list for weeks, if not years. The fact that less than two years after publication I picked up a hard cover copy at a book clearance for 75% off is a testimony to lazy editorship more than anything else. What a huge loss for our society.

It is evident that Robert Coles has an immense amount of insight on the psychology of young children. His work in this book extends to young children of all ages. He doesn't waste time spilling disheartening statistics that scares the reader. Coles discusses the issues and concerns of young children that help link their moral intelligence to moral life. His background in children psychology is deep and experienced, using ideas and shared beliefs with other professional masterminds of children psychology. Children believe that they are the world and everything revolves around them. Robert Coles dissects the moral intelligence by sharing his personal experience and observations with children of all ages. It is clear that Coles has a deep passion in his work. His feelings for the children he has worked with go beyond than just an observer. As Coles explains, moral intelligence derives from the surroundings that children observe. He seems to provide a solution to all aspects of child psyche. He covers angles in which parents and teachers can handle certain situations. Coles uses this book to fill the voids that children need. The moral intelligence is created by the child, but can be molded by proper guidance. Although children create personal shield around themselves, Coles offers a solution to the guidance that is vital to the development of the child. This book is a great tool to help teachers and parents how to adjust to the child who suddenly is becoming distant to moral reasoning. Coles perspectives are eye-opening and brilliant. Behaviors you would normally avoid and consider abnormal can be catered to by the help of this book. It just makes you want to serve and protect young

3 out of 5 stars Practical advice for parents and teachers, well written.......1999-05-08

Moral Intelligence one of numerous books Robert Coles has written is in a way in a culmination of the years he has spent working with children in families. It is a topic that has intrigued him since he was a student of psychology, and has continued to play a role in his life. He offers many personal insights and examples from his own life-showing that even a expert psychologist can learn from his own children-the rest of us should be equally humble!

Moral intelligence is the theory put forth by Dr. Coles, that children learn some of the most important lessons by observing the behaviors of those around them in authority positions (mainly parents and teachers). His theory goes beyond the teaching of moral lessons such as "you shouldn't steal, or lie" and reaches a deeper level of analysis. He theorizes that children pick up and retain information about moral behavior from witnessing the actions of others. He defines moral intelligence as the actions of one that effect the behavior of another. He feels that this manner of learning has a more lasting impact on children.

Dr. Coles states that he has been interested in moral intelligence much of his life. This topic is something he feels truly passionate about and it shows in this work and in this book. Critics may dismiss this work as simple common sense but it goes well beyond that, and cannot be summed up so easily. While the advice he offers may seem elementary-it is not being followed by many parents and bears repeating. He writes from both his heart and his mind and provides necessary reassurance and guidance for parents and teachers who may be struggling with the decisions and choices they must make each and every day. His book is unique in that it is a resource for parents, teachers and academics.

The book is an enjoyable read no matter what your purpose. He provides a glimpse into his own life so we can all see that no one is above being taught. He states that he has learned some of the most important lessons from his own son. If he can learn, so can we. He offers advice that everyone should be able to follow.

                                        Book Description

“I feel that I can do the best, most profound things and life is short. How I wish I was living in an age when man wanted to raise temples to man or God or the Devil.” Jacob Epstein was thirty when he wrote these impassioned words. Now recognized as a seminal figure in the history of twentieth-century art, his powerful and often explicit sculptures, monumental in scale, were hailed as the work of a genius by a few contemporary figures such as Ezra Pound and Augustus John, but produced hostility and censoriousness from the art establishment. His is a true rags-to-riches story. Epstein was born in 1880 in the Jewish Ghetto of New York but emigrated to Europe to live a bohemian life, with a wife and several mistresses in a domestic menage. By the time of his death in 1959 he had met almost everybody of importance in the art world and many in political and other spheres. He endured public scandals caused by the nudity of his so-called Strand Statues (1907-1908; destroyed 1937) and the debauched-looking angel on his 1912 memorial for Oscar Wilde, but in 1946 he modeled the portrait of Sir Winston Churchill and was himself knighted in 1954. It is a comment on changing tastes that Epstein’s magnificent carving in alabaster, “Jacob and the Angel,” once refused by the Tate Gallery, now stands in the Central Sculpture Hall of Tate Britain. His sculpture, drawing, and other work are to be found in museums and art galleries all over the world. Daemons and Angels, the first biography in fifty years of this controversial sculptor, features black-and-white photographs throughout.

I had high expectations for this book on master sculptor Sir Jacob Epstein as it was coming from the author of one of my favourite books, a biography of artist Suzanne Valadon. Sadly, it is a great disappointment. It seems a very sketchy biography at best, covering ground that has been previously explored by former Epstein biographers and presenting no new discoveries of its own. There are also major flaws in showing Epstein's humourous side such as his bizarre encounter with the eccentric Marchesa Casati. Casati is not mentioned at all, even though her bust is one of Epstein's masterpieces. Also, author June Rose completely leaves out any mention of the scandal that followed Epstein's death when castings were made of many of the artist's best works and sold as Epstein originals. Additionally, the illustrations are a badly selected lot, with not even a single photograph of the sculptor's spectacular tomb for Oscar Wilde in Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris. For the definitive biography of Epstein please read Stephen Gardiner's "Epstein: Artist Against the Establishment" or Epstein's own wonderful autobiography "Let There Be Sculpture". After such excellent work as the aforementioned biography of Valadon and her volume on Modigliani, I sincerely hope that Ms. Rose's next book returns her to the top of her form.

"I feel that I can do the best, most profound things and life is short," he wrote when he was thirty, and wished that he "was living in an age when man wanted to raise temples to man or God or the Devil." Time would prove Epstein's artistic talents to be as grand as his creative passion. His powerful and often explicit sculptures, monumental in their scale, would eventually define and indeed epitomize his age - but only after years of controversy during which his work was criticized, condemned, and sometimes destroyed." "While Epstein is now recognized as a seminal figure in the history of twentieth-century art - a Modernist who was the first sculptor to carve directly in stone since the Middle Ages - the genius of his work in the early 1900s was recognized by only a few contemporary figures like Ezra Pound and Augustus John. Among the art establishment his work for the most part aroused hostility and censoriousness. So it was that Epstein endured the public scandals created by the nudity of his so-called Strand Statues (1907-1908; destroyed 1937) and by the debauched-looking naked angel that commanded his 1912 memorial for Oscar Wilde - but three decades later, he was modeling the portrait of Sir Winston Churchill and was knighted himself in 1954." In this life of Jacob Epstein, acclaimed art historian and biographer June Rose follows the course of the controversial sculptor's career from scandal to celebrity. She tells a true rags-to-riches story that takes Epstein from the Jewish ghetto in his native New York to a bohemian existence in Europe, where he set up a domestic menage with his wife and several mistresses, to ultimately the heights of artistic success. He formed friendships with Picasso, Modigliani, and Brancusi, and by the time of his death in 1959, at the age of seventy-nine, Epstein had met virtually everybody of importance in the art world and not a few luminaries in political and other spheres.

Until now, no book has been available about the WWII POW experience from the perspective of a midlevel commander. Colonel Alexander's unique memoir combines the military and political insight of an officer aware of his superiors' strategy with the bare emotion of a man suffering the terror of imprisonment. His account has been quoted and referenced by countless World War II historians; now, through the careful editing of Dominic Caraccilo, his memoir is available in its entirety for all students of World War II--professional and amateur.

Dominic J. Caraccilo is the author of The Ready Brigade of the 82nd Airborne in Desert Storm and a contributing author for the VFW-sponsored two-volume WWII commemorative set Faces of Victory. He has published numerous articles in World War II, Military Review, Army Magazine and World War II Historical Journal.

                                              4 out of 5 stars Fairly good.......2002-09-22

The editing was sloppy with reference numbers wrong. He irritatingly keeps using the word `object' when he means of course `abject' Annoying to have to keep flipping to the back of the book which is composed of one third references.
However bearing he was an amateur I thought it was an interesting book and yes well worth a read of a first hand account of a quite dreadful experience.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best accounts of Japanese Imprisonment.......1999-08-21

This was one of the best books on the subject of the Bataan death March and Philippine Invasion that I've read. Col. Alexander's personal account brings the events upfront and real to the reader. You truly feel part of the Col.'s ordeal. I reccomend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars tHE ORIGINAL WAS ONE YOU COULD.NOT PUT DOWN.......1999-02-08

I cannot of course write a review of this book yet as I do not have a copy. I do have the original manuscript and I will give you my opinions after I read the book. I am his daughter in law and the mother of his four grandchildren.
