Excellent Tool.......2004-02-01
Great layout for tracking your healthy (or not) behaviors. Weekly format lets you review at a glance how you are doing. This is particularly nice since consistent behavior is so important. Two pages per week for personal notes with check off boxes for sleep, vigor and mood. One page per week for food records with plenty of room to be specific or just mark number of food group servings in provided boxes. One page per week for physical activity records with a separate place for strengh training and number of steps taken (for pedometer fans).
This journal is a great motivator. I think because it's for 52 weeks (you can start anytime) it lets you really see that your overall daily choices and behaviors are what impact your health the most. That super duper hot fudge sundae isn't going to cancel out all the good choices you are making. Highly recommend! I bought one for my Mom and we are doing it together!
A disappointment.......2004-01-11
I am a fan of Miriam Nelson and the Strong Women books but I returned this book because I thought it was poorly designed. It is organized by week, not by day, and within each week there are different sections for exercise, food, etc. so that you have to switch back and forth between the sections (and pages) to record your different behaviors on a single day. Plus, there are some daily behaviors, e.g., drinking lots of water, which are only noted with one (i.e., a weekly) checkbox--it appears that she wanted to remind you to drink lots of water but didn't have room to include a daily checkbox for it or for other behaviors which should occur daily (e.g., a multivitamin).
It would have been more logical -- and easier to use -- if one could note one's actions and behaviors for a single day on the same page or page spread. (I have since found out that you can do this with Bob Greene's journal, Get With the Program.) On top of that, I saw at least two typos: in the intro section there's a phrase about "difficult people's" routines that was most obviously meant to read "different people's" routines. Why would anyone want to follow a difficult person's health and fitness routine? :) And on at least one of the page footers, it reads "umber" instead of "number."
I did not think that it featured the "essentials" or "highlights" of the Strong Women books (as the promo blurb claims it does). It has a few things here and there, but it's mostly anecdotes from readers whose diverse experiences may not be all that relevant to you. And some of Nelson's tips aren't helpful, e.g., when doing errands, resolve to walk to every destination less than a mile away. How could any busy person do that?
Funny, I came across a Web site that reviewed one of Nelson's later books. I can't remember the title of the book or the Web site, but she thought Nelson was getting sloppy after the first two books, perhaps because she is being asked to churn out at least one book a year.
I couldn't help but think of that review when I finally got a close look at this book.
To each her own of course. The design may work for you, but look carefully at the book before you buy. On the other hand the Strong Women "Stay Slim" and "Stay Young" books are quite good. So is her Web site, www.strongwomen.com.
Superb motivator and tracker.......2003-12-23
Despite the strong "women" nomenclature, this book serves equally well for men OR women who want to better their health and improve their wellness. As Miriam Nelson explains in the preface, the best predictor of people becoming more fit (exercise, diet) is whether they keep a journal or not. This structured journal means that in just a few minutes a day you can record the key facts about your program and progress (or lack of it) to keep you on track. HIGHLY recommended!

Book Description
A transcription of Lucy Peel's wonderfully readable journal was recently discovered in her descendent's house in Norwich, England. Sent in regular installments to her transatlantic relatives, the journal presents an intimate narrative of Lucy's Canadian sojourn with her husband, Edmund Peel, an officer on leave from the British navy. Her daily entries begin with their departure as a young, newlywed couple from the shores of England in 1833 and end with their decision to return to the comforts of home after three and a half years of hard work as pioneer settlers.
Lucy Peel's evocative diary focuses on the semi-public world of family and community in Lower Canada's Eastern Townships, and fulfils the same role as Susanna Moodie's writings had for the Upper Canadian frontier. Though their perspective was from a small, privileged sector of society, these genteel women writers were sharp observers of their social and natural surroundings, and they provide valuable insights into the ideology and behaviour of the social class that dominated the Canadian colonies during the pre-Rebellion era.
Women's voices are rarely heard in the official records that comprise much of the historical archives. Lucy Peel's intensely romantic journal reveals how crucially important domesticity was to the local British officials. Lucy Peel's diary, like those of such counterparts as Catherine Parr Traill, also suggests that genteel women were better prepared for their role in the New World than Canadian historians have generally assumed.

Make The Most Of Your Space........2005-09-08
I've had this book for a few years and I still peek at it occasionally. Scott Landis tells about starting his own woodshop long ago and I can relate pretty well. I actually started without a place, working outside, in space borrowed in basements, off the tailgate of my truck and for a while in a barn,,,well, actually, a tool shed open on one side(I had to move a tractor out every day,put it back every night). This book gives examples of shops similar to those and large fully equipped facillities. The COOLEST part of this book to me is the space saving designs and features in some of the shops. This alone has been a help to me in the development of the 900 sq.ft. LOCKABLE shop I have now. The illustrations include floorplans and equipment layouts from daily use shops. Just seeing other peoples workspaces and what works for them and how thier shops grew and developed, can sometimes bring about great revelation for your own work space. Two of the shops are in closets or laundry rooms!!!! I like nosing around and looking at other shops and found this book entertaining as well as informative. Thanks Scott.
Read it in the bookstore before you buy it........2004-11-19
I did, and decided I didn't need it. There is good advice here - lots of input on space requirements and lighting, but page after page, I was just left wanting something more. The shops don't look "real" to me - they are obviously tremendously expensive and usually look sterile and impersonal. The men in them don't seem to particularly enjoy their work. They all look like a bunch of New York attorneys working in their hobby shops at their Connecticut hobby farms. I know that's not a fair characterization, and was certainly not the intent, but it was my persistent gut reaction. Too many of them looked like Norm Abram's infamous shop where there was a power tool for every purpose. None of them had the warm, inviting glow of Roy Underhill's shop, which draws you in for a cup of tea and joke by the woodstove.
"The Workbench Book" and "The Toolbox Book" were both joyful and gorgeous and pulled me along, but this one just made me feel like I needed to tear my shop down and start over, although that was not what the author was hoping to achieve. But look at it for yourself, at the library, and see what you think, before you buy it.
Disappointing if you're looking for practical advice.......2001-05-15
I found this book disappointing, but perhaps I was looking for the wrong things in it. I was hoping for some guidance and information on setting up a home workshop, but that's not what I found.
The book is a sort-of survey, sort-of essay on workshops of various kinds, including historical shops dating back hundreds of years. There's a lot of discussion of how various workers have set up their shops, but the descriptions are overviews lacking in much detail. And many of the shops described are atypical in one way or another. For example, the author returns over and over to the couple who turned their entire two-story house into a guitar-making shop, with separate rooms for shaping, finishing, wood storage and the like. Interesting, but not very helpful to me.
If you're looking for a portrayal of, and a lot of discussion about, workshops in all their variety, then you may very well love this book. But if you're looking for something that will help you decide how to set up your own shop, you won't find much here.
Woodworking With a Human Interest Side.......2000-01-15
I have bought many woodworking books but this one is a rarity-I read it from cover to cover. It has many useful tips for designing a shop but the most interesting part was his focus on the owners of the shops. It describes the wonderful variety of woodworkers as well as their shops and interests.
This is a great book.......1999-12-11
This book is split into comprehensive chapters on layout, machinery, etc. Covers topics such as ergonomics, workflow, special applications, etc. A practical and useful guide, much better than the workbench book by the same author which basically amounts to a coffee table book with pretty pictures.

200 Tips for Growing Vegetables in the Midwest.......2002-06-26
Even though I am a beginning gardener, I found this book to be too basic for my needs. Most of the information can be learnt from watching 2 or 3 episodes of any gardening show. It would however, be helpful to someone who has never planted anything, nor has any prior gardening knowledge. The format was easy to read as it was similar to a bullet style, with 2-3 sentences per item.
Book Description
A lovely aid in welcoming a child to the world, this is an inspiring and practical introduction for parents, health workers, policy makers, educators, spiritual students, and others to an integrated system of health care which includes body, emotions, mind, spirit, relationships, and environment. Invaluable for anyone interested in anything from holistic healthcare to the myths, legends, and child-rearing practices of the Tibetan people.
Customer Reviews:
very, very interesting...opened a new way of looking at life!.......2007-01-16
An easy read and certainly of interest to those wishing to understand Buddhist thought on life/death and the importance of birth/rebirth! This book sparked a series of readings for us and still going! Cultural differences between Eastern/Western birth experiences are also of interest here; the role of mother and birth SHOULD be more revered, as illustrated in this book, very nicely, no matter what your faith or background. Enjoy!
Very informative and interesting.......2001-06-18
This is a good book that takes an intimate look at Tibetan culture. One of the most fascanating aspects of cultures is how each one has a different technique to raise their young ones. There is no other book like it to my knowledge. Neat parenting ideas, and great information about Tibetan culture.

Book Description
The Eurasian son of a Chinese railroad executive, young David lives in a world of privilege until World War II. His father serves the Japanese while secretly working for the Resistance. After the war, with his father imprisoned, he leaves the country at the age of twelve, unsure that they will ever be reunited. This memoir was awarded the Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize for Nonfiction.
Customer Reviews:
Simply amazing.......2005-01-24
I was sent a copy of this book by my mum from Australia last year and only recently had the chance to finally read the book.
It's no wonder that this book is an award winner (2000 Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize). Kwan keeps you rivetted to his story, told through eyes of a young boy growing up in very turbulent times. In spite of coming from a wealthy family, it cannot save him from the terrors and turmoil brought to Northern China in the 1930s and 1940s, nor from the racial judgement passed on him for being half-Chinese and half-White.
How Kwan manages to survive is quite amazing. He is abandoned by his own mother and faces major abuses at school. Then, war begins and he begins to witness the atrocities committed by the Japanese in China. Finally, after the Japanese are defeated, he nearly loses his father to the KMT government that his father has faithfuly served through the resistance movement. He is not even safe from his own family, who try to use him as a means to extort his father for money that no longer exists.
An absolute must read for anyone interested in China, the Japanese invasion of China, and a boy's coming of age.
A beautiful work, both tender and powerful........2001-08-03
I read a review and an excerpt of this book in Toronto last summer, and waited anxiously for it to be published here in the States. I read it in two days, gulping it down excitedly; then I re-read it slowly, informed of the story but savoring the beautiful prose. I wrote Mr. Kwan a "fan letter," only to learn today in this forum that he passed away. I was hoping for a sequel.
a powerful and well written memoir.......2001-06-30
An extraordinary story told with well controlled language and subtle understatements. The book chronicles the lives in a previledged, but also marginalized, world where everyone is deeply enshrouded in his or her own loneliness : the western expatriates in China, the mixed-blood children like the author himself, the western women married to Chinese men but unable to summon any love for the country or its people, the well-cultured mem ostracized by the society for their marriages to western women. Each of them, making good-intentioned efforts to connect, failed miserably because of their own deep-rooted prejudice, social barriars imposed by other people, or simply the uncontrollable historical whirlwinds. Outside this walled-in existence, a war is raging on with unimaginable callousness. The wall would eventually crumble down and the fineness of the Legation Quarter be swallowed by the brutal and rancid humanities of that era. Reminding us at times of Proust and Graham Greene, this remembrance of things past documents, in a hushed voice, an extraordinary age and all the human efforts to stay emerged in the midst of sweeping torrents. Warmth and friendship flicker from time to time in this vast emotional void : the author's attachment to his down-to-earth and understanding nanny Shu Ma, his natural bonding with the reticent peasant Xiao Hu, and the unusual and quiet friendship between the boy and the Japanese Admiral. Language in the last couple chapters slips a little bit and becomes less disciplined. But overall this is a wonderfully written memoir. Saddened by the news of the author's death couple weeks ago, I was especially grateful for the gift he left with us in the form of this book.
A moving, understated memoir.......2001-06-26
I bought Michael David Kwan's "Things That Must Not Be Forgotten" after reading a glowing review in the Washington Post. I was not disappointed. It is a moving, understated memoir about Mr. Kwan's childhood years starting shortly before the outbreak of World War II and ending as the Kuomintang was breathing its last in mainland China. Although young David was fortunate enough to be born into a wealthy family as a "half-caste" child of a Chinese father and a Swiss mother (who abandoned the family very early in David's life), he was never considered to be a true part of either the white and Chinese communities. The editorial reviews give a good overview of the content of the book and the increasing difficulties that David and his family endured under the Japanese and even more so under the corrupt Nationalist Chinese government. The narrative is brisk and engaging; it is probably the best work of non-fiction that I have read in quite some time.
Sadly, on May 20th of this year Mr. Kwan suffered a fatal heart attack just two weeks before the official U.S.-publication of this book. We are all very fortunate that he was able to give us such a memorable farewell gift.
"Things That Must Not Be Forgotten" won the 2000 Kirayama Prize for non-fiction, beating out such well-received books as Herbert Bix's "Hirohito and the Making of Modern Japan," Helen Zia's "Asian American Dreams" and Chanrithy Him's "When Broken Glass Floats."
