Thought-provoking but not entirely accurate.......2006-12-26
Good points: While its coverage of fertility awareness is somewhat perfunctory compared to the other major books on the subject (by Toni Weschler and the Kippleys), it explains it in a new way. I particularly liked her comparison of vaginal sensation to sensation inside your nose - you can tell whether your nose is wet or dry just by paying attention to it, with no need to stick a finger in there. The same is possible with the vulva.
Singer takes fertility awareness beyond birth control or pregnancy acheivement. She gives examples and tools for readers to use the awareness aspect of FA to become aware of many other aspects of their lives, including both physical and psychological health. I found the presentation and explanation of Susan Weed's Six Steps of Healing particularly inspiring.
This is also the best presentation of fertility during breastfeeding that I have read (others I have read are "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" and "The Art of Natural Family Planning"). Though I have heard good things about "Breastfeeding and Natural Child Spacing" and it might be technically better, many might be turned off by its religious content.
Bad points: Singer mixes up theories for which there is strong scientific evidence and growing support (such as the dangers of phthalates), theories that have weak or no support in the scientific community (bras cause cancer), and statements that are outright false (pre-ejaculate contains viable sperm - the only three studies ever done found no such thing).
She mixes up sound nutritional advice (excess refined flour and sugar is unhealthy) with false nutritional advice (plant oils, which contain high levels of omega-3 and omega-6 essential fats, she says are unhealthy. She also says that no historical human community has long, healthy life with low levels of animal fats - ignoring the entire Meditteranean region.) and with advice that just doesn't make any sense (to absorb the fat-soluble vitamins in cod liver oil - remember, oil is a fat - she says you have to take it with butter.)
Some of her advice is just out-of-date. It was published before many of the studies exploring the huge number of benefits to including moderate amounts of tea, coffee, and chocolate (especially dark chocolate). She advices to completely avoid all these substances. She also goes on at length about how low temperatures are a definite sign of all sorts of problems - while a recent mouse study found that mice with lower temperatures live significantly longer than mice with "normal" temperatures.
She integrates Chinese medicine theories throughout the book. To me, this was worse than the religious theories in "The Art of NFP", because those are easily identifiable as dogma. The Chinese medicine in this book is presented as scientific fact, when its theories have actually never been tested in clinical trials.
I'm giving it three stars because its good points are pretty strong. But I would never recommend this book as a stand-alone reference for any of the subjects it covers, only as a supplement.

This is not the first time I learn about charting for menstrual cycle but it is the first time I understand the chart. It goes beyond the basic and has enough information about how to read the chart that I find it a very useful tool to empower all women to take charge of the health of their reproductive system.

It's a wise way for women to become aware of the rhythms of their own bodies and for their partners to share in this awareness. Singer profoundly understands the myriad ways that diet, lifestyle and environment affect reproductive health and provides an excellent discussion of the vital role that traditional animal products and healthy fats play in reproductive health and the risks of supposedly healthy low-fat products, soyfoods and other highly processed modern food products. As a Clinical Nutritionist, I have worked with many infertile female clients, many of whom were "health conscious" vegetarians or near vegetarians. Nearly all of these women regained their fertility, strengthened their overall reproductive health and just plain felt better after removing soy foods from their diets and adopting a varied, omnivorous diet rich in both protein and fat. Men also benefit from eliminating soy foods because the plant estrogens lower testosterone levels, diminish the libido and adversely affect both the quality and quantity of sperm. In short, if you value your sexuality and reproductive health, follow ALL the excellent advice in this book.
a must-read for every woman.......2004-10-26
Around the time I began using The Pill, a friend mentioned the fertility awareness method, FAM, to me. I wrote it off as the infamous "rhythm method." A year later, desperate to come off the Pill (not a good experience for me), I decided that FAM might be worth looking into.
So I went to the book store and bought The Garden of Fertility.
I have read it and re-read it. I've discovered that FAM is NOT the rhythm method. The rhythm method is based on average days of ovulation, which few women fit into. FAM is based on YOUR OWN CURRENT, RELIABLE SYMPTOMS TO KNOW YOUR FERTILE DAYS.
I thought at first that charting my temp would be a pain and that I'd be too squeamish to check cervical mucus. These things have turned out to be a breeze, and I have a comfort with my body that I've never know before. I LOVE to chart, it tells me so much other than when I am ovulating (the book will explain).
Not only is this book good for preventing pregnancy, but when it is time to make babies, we'll know the fertile days.
The book also has great information about improving your reproductive health (nutrition, night-lighting, etc.).
I wish I'd discovered this book earlier. It has changed my view of birth control in so many ways...

This book is perfect. The recipes are basic, unpretentious and they look and taste like a million bucks. I got "Pies and Tarts" from Amazon years ago and it's been a favorite since. Friends have borrowed it so much that it's falling apart.
Stewart's approach is that fruit pies should taste like fruit. They should be easy enough for everyday dining and they should make the most of whatever's freshest and in season. The recipes use a minimal amount of spices. The philosophy is one of restrained, everyday elegance.
The pies here are intended to be shared with friends and family, so there is some focus on presentation and decorative treatments. The fruit itself is showcased in most of the recipes. For the bottom crust plum pie, the crust is just folded inward around the edges leaving a mostly open face, which shows off the plum filling. It's rough, but beautiful.
The all-butter pie crust recipe is the star of the book though. Probably the definitive pie crust, period. The section is generously illustrated with photos so you can see the different stages of preparation, rolling and wrapping. If you've never had a handmade all-butter pie crust, it's completely different than anything you can get at the supermarket.
For traditional recipes with lots of whole fruit, this is a great volume to get acquainted with the essentials of pie making.
My favorite is the green tomato pie - with a little ginger, raisins, lemon and cinnamon. It's gooey, light and surprisingly delicate. I let the tomatoes drain for an hour first though, otherwise it comes out too liquid.

I'm a little bit of an oddball in that I've been making pies and tarts since I was in High School, and basically learned how through this book. The basic recipes for pie and tart crusts and glazes, found at the back of the book with step-by-step illustrations, have become indispensable favorites of mine. Martha is a big advocate of using a food processor to ensure that chilled ingredients stay that way, ensuring a tender, flaky crust that's fast and reliable, and I couldn't agree more, especially if, like me, you're working in an unairconditioned kitchen. The recipes for pastry cream and lemon curd are superb. Rather than using specific recipes for tarts, I usually bake one of the crusts (pate brisee, pate sucree or sucree extra or nut), use the recipe for pastry cream found in the recipe for the blackberry tart, and add my own fresh fruit and one of the glazes. Among the individual recipes, the apple raisin pie is a favorite I make every Thanksgiving, the Tarte Tatin is great, and I especially appreciate the recipes using Italian Prune or Friar plums, available in late August / September, my favorite fruit for pies and tarts. I just ate a Pear Frangipane tartlet this weekend, and was pleased to discover there was a recipe for it in this book, and look forward to making my own. One of my only complaints is that the recipes seemingly all use different-sized and shaped pie and tart tins, with no easy formulas for converting recipes to fit what you're using. Also, there's no recipe for a classic pecan pie. However, this book is a classic Martha Stewart effort, with the beautiful photographs and consistently high standards that go with that; it certainly has stood the test of time in my kitchen.

Well, the illustrations in this book are beautiful and Martha's pie crust, as well as her lemon curd, are absolutely the best, but the pies and tarts in this book are simply the worst I've ever tasted! Really, I've tasted kindergarten paste that had more flavor than these recipes. As a seasoned baker, I do know how to substitute ingredients and add more spice, but why should anyone have to? And what about those who can't? After all, the book is not titled, Martha Stewart's Exotic Pies and Tarts for the Experienced Baker Only, however, it should be. What good is a book if most people really can't use it? Yes, I can make all those lovely grape clusters, leaves and tendrils that adorn Martha's Concord Grape Pie, but I think most people are really looking for something a little more basic. Okay, final analysis: if you're looking for the out-of-the-ordinary (and the tasteless) then buy this book. If you just want some great pie and tart recipes, try The Pie and Pastry Bible. You won't go wrong there.

Zero hype, great discussion and insight.......2007-08-18
(Note: for me, five stars is reserved for something truly mind-blowing -- I haven't given one yet. Four stars for me is a really, really good rating.)
This book has a great story to tell about how many instances of high blood pressure are attributable to repressed emotions. The author is a careful scientist, and clearly identifies how his conclusions arise from information that is in some sense anecdotal. He also is careful to note that only some hypertension can be so attributed, and how drugs are still a very important tool in regulating this problem. I was pleased to read a down-to-earth book on hypertension that did not pretend to have all the answers.
Having said all that, it turns out that the main hypothesis presented in the book did not apply to me, so the book did not provide a non-drug solution for me. Though that's not the fault of the book. The book did have an excellent section on the drugs that are used, what they do and how they work (to the extent we know), and what considerations are used in selected drugs. I use one of them now (lisinopril), which easily and completely controls my hypertension with a relatively low dose and no apparent side effects.
The writing at times can be redundant and repetitive, but the good parts are the actual case histories that are described. I recommend this book for anyone who would like to get some real information about hypertension without someone trying to sell you something.

Healing Hypertension by Mann.......2005-05-19
Hypertension is inferred from a blood pressure level of 140/90
or higher. Once diagnosed, it is necessary for a physician or
medical provider to probe hidden emotions which may underlie the
chronic nature of hypertension. Biofeedback and relaxation techniques may reduce hypertension to within manageable ranges.
With the reduction of hypertension will come a lower blood pressure. Heart conductance disturbances may be managed by drinking less coffee and alcohol. IBS in women can come from sex abuse at
some stage. Brain hypertension may come from the sympathetic nervous system, noradrenalin receptors or artery constriction.
This book is not a cure-all; however, the author provides
rational reasons and alternatives to manage hypertension constructively.
The Advice in this Book Really Works.......2003-11-22
I have had a problem with white coat hypertension for a long time. I read this book and following his advice regarding the problem of not dealing with hidden emotions has resolved my problem that I thought I could never overcome. I strongly recommend this book especially if you feel that you really don't have hypertension and are just very nervous when your blood pressure is taken.

This is one of the best books I've ever read on hypertension. Dr. Mann's style is gentle and knowing, and he makes the concepts easy to understand. And whether your high blood pressure is linked to your repressing your emotions or not, the latter part of the book offers an excellent overview of treatment options.

I have just finished reading the book "Maxfield Parrish and the American Imagists", quite literally from cover to cover and I could not allow the occasion to pass without writing a review. It was, indeed, my profound pleasure to have read this book. I have been an MP aficiondo for probably 45 years of more. During this time I have acquired a very small and modest collection of his art prints as well as a dozen or more books and other miscellaneous items over the years. More importantly along the way I have gained a depth of appreciation of MP's genius as an artist and thinker. The publication of this book in 2004 represents a compendium of this American icon's work that brought it all together for me. It represents a resource and reference that I will be sure to refer to from time to time. The choice of format, quality stock, a faithful rendering and reproduction of the artwork and well-written text are impressive and unexcelled. Excellent!

With over 400 four color illustrations, a text which analyzes, explains and documents in over 480 pages, this is without question the nearest thing to a Catalogue Raisonee on Maxfield Parrish. Turning Japanese chronicles his quest for identity with honesty, intelligence, and poetic vision and it stands as a classic meditation on difference and assimilation and is a valuable window onto a country that has long fascinated our own. Turning Japanese was a New York Times Notable Book and winner of an Oakland PEN Josephine Miles Book Award. This edition includes a new afterword by the author.

I agree with the reviewers who found the book repetitive, a little boring and more about his family than Japanese culture. While he attempts to provide many insights I fear that most of them are dated now 16 years later. Also the author makes such a big deal about seeing the hometown of his grandfather and when he finally gets there after 300 pages there is absolutely no payoff.
Honest account of self discovery.......2004-01-26
I appreciate Mura's contribution to Asian American literature and his courage to reveal himself, which is very atypical for Asian/Asian American men. His struggles with his racial identity and journey to find connections with his grand parents' homeland were fascinating. Being a person of Japanese ancestory, I believe Asian/Asian American men can personally relate to Mura's story. I also recommend his other book,"Where the Body Meets Memory", which reveals further on his issues and helps to complement this book.
Bad times ten.......2003-05-18
An overwraught and overwritten diary about how hard it is to be David Mura, wealthy American of Japanese descent. Hello? Hard lives are lived on the West Bank, in drought-striken East Africa and in Northern Ireland. This self-indulgent work trivializes real suffering.
Resonates with the memories of this sansei.......2002-02-20
I can't comment with any authority on this book regarding its literary merit. However, I can say that, having lived life as a sansei just as David Mura has, I found this book a compelling read -- a book whose feeling and emotion was/is quite consistent with mine. This is so even though for the most part we seem to have lived very different kinds of lives. Our principal commonality appears to be that a stay in Japan during young adulthood played a pivotal role in helping us learn something about ourselves. Trivial and obvious? Perhaps. Anti-white and/or anti-American (as has been stated by other readers here)? I don't think so.
A book to learn expat life in Japanese familar terms.......2001-11-25
I am a Japan-born Japanese who lives in Boston for over 10 years and it is my strong pursuit to learn cultural encountering points between East and West especially, to name, Japan and US. The book caught my eyes immediately when I first saw it in a bookstore since I thought I can read about this Japanese American who know more about US than Japan although he must have been exposed to a some level of Japanese-ism over the course of his upbringing. My expectation from the book was to see the complex mosaic of his feeling toward Japan and its culture now that he lives in the country Japan. Unfortunately, it was not what I retrieved from the book since he was rather in a rare subculture of Japan and read little about his interaction with Japanese as cultural encountering. However, it was certainly a personal memoir of an expat who lives in a foreign country but knows the intricacy of Japan. This will not be a book for those who want to read his statements of Japan. But it will certainly be an interesting reading if you want to read the life of this expat who can describe his personal experience in more Japanese familiar terms.
