Book Description
This collection of essays on themes in the work of John Locke (1632-1704), George Berkeley (1685-1753), and David Hume (1711-1776), provides a deepened understanding of major issues raised in the Empiricist tradition. In exploring their shared belief in the experiential nature of mental constructs, The Empiricists illuminates the different methodologies of these great Enlightenment philosophers and introduces students to important metaphysical and epistemological issues including the theory of ideas, personal identity, and skepticism. It will be especially useful in courses devoted to the history of modern philosophy. Visit our website for sample chapters!

Book Description
Unlike other guides that focus on how to make relationships work, this groundbreaking book teaches couples how their relationships can make their lives work. Combining the practical advice of Harville Hendrix with the spiritual guidance of Thomas Moore, it shows couples how their relationships can help them discover their sacred selves in such chapters as "The Power of Truth-Telling", "The Inner Marriage", "Men In Relationship" and "Soulwork and Sacred Combat". Along the way, it provides a wealth of practical guidance on how to deal with difficult problems and includes lively dialogues from Welwood's workshops that dynamically illustrate his core ideas.
Men and women are searching for deeper meaning and purpose in their everyday lives and relationships. Love and Awakening fills this need. It is a book couples will want to read together.

Book condition.......2005-09-20
Book wasn't quite in as good a condition as I was led to believe, else would have been 5 stars.
Setting Perspective.......2005-08-22
I think this book is absolutely amazing in describing feelings, situations and the bond between relationships. Not only does this book help open eyes to resolve outter issues with your significant other but as well as inner issues that may cause problems in a relationship. If anyone is confused, overwhelmed or just plain stumbling through a relationship I recommend this read.
Simply amazing........2005-01-25
This is probably one of the best, if not the best book I have read about that huge topic of LOVE. Among all the books dealing with this topic, this one stands out because of the depth of its explanation and the poetry of its wording.
Welwood suggests that love is not simply a pure physical attraction. It could lift lovers to another level: the discovery of oneself. Love, according to the author is a journey, a path toward understanding oneself and one's partner. From there, if could lift lovers to a state of communion: they become warriors who travel on the same road toward spiritual enrichment. Viewed from this angle, love seems to be divine. It has the power of transforming people like any other thing in the world.
This is part of the eastern philosophy that has suggested back in the 6th century AC that:
"Love enjoyed by the ignorant
Becomes bondage.
That very same love
Tested by one with understanding
Brings liberation."
Using a combination of poetry, eastern philosophy (one ground two paths, alliance of warriors, suchness...) and western psychology, Welwood has been able to weave a tale inner fight and self-discovery that could lead lovers to enlightenment. Enlightenment, not in its religious sense, is defined as a constant state of happiness without suffering. And that is what we are searching for in our human condition.
This book should be read by anyone falling in love for the first or the hundredth time.
Beautiful sequel to Journey of the Heart........2002-01-02
Welwood has crafted a masterful book. Although he expands on the material he presented in his previous book Journey of the Heart, this book can be read by itself. Journey of the Heart was like a roadmap of the terrain of intimate relationships. Love and Awakening provides dialogue from some of Welwood's clients rediscovering their personal authenticity in relationship. There are also brief sections throughout the book narrating a quality or observation about relationship that are truly stunning in its poetic clarity. It perfectly echos the truths we all know deep in our hearts. His section on the "Broken-Hearted Warrior" is the most poignant, eloquent and beautiful passage about the path of intimate relationship I have ever read. The real power and magic of this book is that it does not prescribe cures like a doctor towards a patient. It gently guides us to our own center, our own being and provides tools for awakening greater awareness.
Warriors of the Heart.......2001-03-20
This is a very valuable book - not just for those in relationships - but for anyone interested in the path of personal development. Welwood writes lucidly and with authority: therapeutic and spiritual concepts and practices are clearly and accessibly presented. This book usefully develops the ideas outlined in Welwood's earlier Journey of the Heart. The inclusion of 'dialogues' gives readers an insight into the experiences of people Welwood has worked with - and this provides a very helpful practical model for readers wishing to explore their own lives in similar ways. Based in solid scholarship, but designed for the lay-reader, I heartily recommend this book to all who are interested in the 'warrior work' of looking into one's own heart.

B&B Cookbook.......2007-05-21
This is a great cookbook. I own many, many cookbooks and can always count on finding a wonderful recipe in this book. I actually bought it as a gift because I already own volumes I and II. It is also fun to read about the various B&B's around the country. One minor issue--when you find a recipe you love, you need to remember the name or mark it because the recipes are listed by name and are sometimes difficult to find. For instance, I made some cheese blintzes and couldn't find them the next time I wanted to make them because they are listed under "Eva's Cheese Blintzes". I didn't occur to me to look under "E". I find this somewhat illogical. However, I highly recommend this book! Every recipe I have tried has been marvelous!
It's a keeper........2002-02-04
I have a collection of over 200 cookbooks, if I had to get rid of them all but one this book would be the one I kept. Volume two would be my next choice.
Just Gotta Have It!.......2002-01-24
This is the BEST cookbook ever. I have soooo many cookbooks and it seems like this is the only one I ever actually use. Unique recipes, most easy to prepare. My guess is that one of the reasons bed and breakfast inns are so popular is the food... now make it at home too. Buy this book it's great!
most used cookbook........2001-12-06
I have had this cookbook for years it seems ..and give it as gifts.it is falling apartas I always revert back to it.. even though I have over 75 cook books...is'nt it time to do another one?????NANCY.
Excellent source for that "special" occasion recipe.......1999-01-07
We absolutely love this cookbook. It is our first choice when we are looking for that special recipe for a special occasion - or just for everyday! Variety is excellent - breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, dessert - it's all there. Can't wait to get Volume 2

Customer Reviews:
Great documentary on the art of Chainsaw Carving.......2007-01-12
Jessie Groeschen does an excellent job documenting chainsaw carving from the "Founding Fathers" (and Mothers) to modern day artists. She also includes summaries of some of the more prestigious events in this relatively unknown form of artwork. The biographies also include a plethora of pictures of each artist's works. To top it off the author provides a step by step pictorial to create your own chainsaw art. It would be a great coffee table book for chainsaw enthusiasts, art enthusiasts, and/or Pacific Northwest culture enthusiasts.
Fabulous overview of the field.......2006-01-13
I'm very happy to have this book, to show people who come to see my carvings, to inspire me, and to reinforce the idea that there are as many approaches to carving as there are carvers, and only a few of them involve bears.
The book is excellently produced, with great photos and entertaining text. I have met some of the carvers featured, and it's good to know more of their history and approach to carving.
For the record, there's one step-by-step in the book; Jessie showing how to carve a chair. If you want to learn how to carve, there are other books. But if you want to know why we carve, this is the one.
From a Collector of Chainsaw Art.......2005-12-17
I am a collector of chainsaw art. My first purchase was back in 1986. I feel I can't have enough carvings. I even own a few pieces by a couple people featured in this book. Knowing some of their story makes it even more meaningful. I enjoyed the book and have it on our coffee table for others to enjoy.
EXCELLENT RESOURCE FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN THE ART OF CHAINSAW CARVING!!!.......2005-11-03
I read this book cover to cover and in my opinion, no other chainsaw carving book allows the reader to feel as though they know the carvers the way that this book does! Jessie does a GREAT job at having the reader identify with the top carvers of our time! I've personally been carving for about two years and through reading about all of the various artists journeys, it has helped me to realize that someday, if I continue to work hard, I could actually meet some of these wonderful people! Jessie has made it clear that if you work hard and believe in your art, that a dream can become a reality! Thanks Jessie! Steve Rager...

Pruning Shears-By-Pass, 3/4"
ASIN: 0895872064 |
Book Description
Gardens and natural areas are becoming more and more important as they assume the role of surrogate backyards for many individuals. These green spaces have universal appeal for gardeners, nature lovers, or anyone interested in either the cultivated curves of a well-executed landscape plan or the natural tangle of a wild, protected space. As the largest state east of the Mississippi River, Georgia can boast of a wide variety of public gardens and natural areas. This book features 45 of these areas with landscapes that vary from mountainous terrain to coastal environments, from urban areas to rural countryside, from plantation gardens to formal settings behind urban townhouses. Accompanying Al Spicer's color photographs are brief histories of each garden along with information on hours and/or season of operation, facilities available, points of interest, tips for successful touring, directions, and associated day trips. Georgia gardens are part of a rich southern horticultural heritage that traces its evolution from the first settlement in Savannah to the fertile ground of the New South. Whether you are an amateur or professional photographer, a plant connoisseur, a wildflower lover, a home gardener, a nature enthusiast, a traveler looking for unique experiences, or simply a lover of bygone days, Peach State Paradise will offer endless pleasures.

Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2007-09-29
This, and his other book, "How to have a 48-hour day," are great books on time management. Both are very insightful and discuss many practical issues of time management that often are not covered, or not covered as clearly, in other time management books. I LOVE Don Aslett's writings!
EXCELLENT ! GET STUFF DONE!!.......2007-09-11
I'M PUTTING THE CAR SEAT COVERS ON MY CAR SEATS. BIG DEAL? YES, BIG DEAL, THEY'VE BEEN IN MY CAR TRUNK FOR 9 YEARS!! I WAS WAITING FOR THEM TO DO THEMSELVES. THEY DIDN'T. I AM DOING IT AND IT IS DONE!!!!! ALMOST ALL OF DON ASLETT'S BOOK ARE EXCELLENT, BUT THIS ONE TOPS THE REST!
Great ideas! A fun read and very motivating........2007-06-19
A fantastic resource, whether you work for corporate America or are the CEO of your own small business at home (also known as a stay-at-home parent). Easy to read and full of practical ideas about how to make the most of your time and get more accomplished. While Aslett comes across as somewhat of a workaholic, his methods of getting more done are useful for those of us with much less on our plate as well.
One of the most useful techniques I found was "piggybacking": using the time between tasks to get other stuff done. For example, boiling pasta for your kids' lunch while you write a review for Amazon.com (as I'm doing now).
I've read a few of Aslett's books, but this one is my favorite. Many time management books are very office-focused. This one is great for those of us who want to learn to manage our life and time beyond the structure of the traditional 9-to-5 workday.
How to Handle 1,000 Things at Once.......2007-01-03
maybe I didn't need this book...added to the clutter of my home
Excellent Resource.......2004-07-14
I started to type out a wordy/lengthy review of this book but then decided it would be much better to make a brief statement as to why I thoroughly ENJOYED it:
Don Aslett has a unique way of 'embarrassing' people, including me, into trying to turn over a new leaf. So many parts of this book pertained to my life, and I think that, even though he writes with a lot of brashness, it is just the 'medicine' that I need to try to get with the program: decluttering, trying to cut housework, etc. We are all managers, and we are the only ones who can change things: nobody is going to do it for us.
I also am keeping the words "look at cleaning up after [something] as the restoration process," so now when I'm taking care of the house, I'm not simply "cleaning" it but "restoring" it.
I got this book through an inter-library loan but am thinking about purchasing it used thru this website and using it as a reference whenever I need a boost...

Those who go about on the Riva always expect four times the value for anything, for they are the falsest knaves that live there. No one expects to get an honest service of them. For that reason some good people warned me to be on my guard against them. They told me that they cheat both man and beast, and that you could buy better things for less money at Frankfort than at Venice.

Book Description
This critically acclaimed autobiography was an instant bestseller in Japan, where it has gone through more than forty printings since its first publication. Cultural critic, literary historian, novelist, poet, and physician, Kato Shuichi reconstructs his dramatic spiritual and intellectual journey from the militarist era of prewar Japan to the dynamic postwar landscapes of Japan and Europe. This fluid translation of A Sheep's Song captures Kato's unique voice and brings his insightful interpretation of modern Japan and its tumultuous relations with the outside world to English-speaking readers for the first time.
Kato describes his youthful interest in the natural sciences as well as in Japanese and Western literatures--from the Man'yoshu to Akutagawa Ryunosuke, Baudelaire, Valéry, and Proust. Turning to the rise of Japanese fascism in the late 1930s, he recalls his rebellion against the jingoistic political atmosphere of the time. The chapters on the war and its aftermath include experiences of Hiroshima shortly after the bombing and the often tragicomic encounters between the defeated Japanese nation and the American Occupation forces. Throughout, memories of his wide-ranging literary career and broad experiences in Europe as a student, traveler, and cultural observer are punctuated by his unique perspectives on the relation between imagination, art, and politics.
A postscript written especially for the English-language edition discusses the Vietnam War, the subsequent transformation of Japan, the cultures and societies of Europe, the United States, and China, and the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Customer Reviews:
An interesting view.......2002-05-02
I found this autobiograhpy to be an interesting view into the life struggles and journey of Kato Shuichi. I feel the translation was done quite well and was deeply moved by the details and insight the author put into his autobiography.
Surprisingly flat.......2001-02-20
I found this book surprisingly flat. It was an enjoyable enough read, but Kato seems to be more interested in dropping names than building stories. Chang's copious footnotes demonstrate this aptly -- she adds information on writers that you never "hear" from again. I would have enjoyed hearing more story-building details from him about his friends, life abroad and in Japan, career, marriage.
An interesting perspective.......2000-10-17
I would have given 'A Sheep's Song' five stars if I hadn't expected something much different. But what I got was refreshing and at times philosophically profound. It is difficult to recommend the autobiography of a person you have probably never heard of, and even more difficult because I expected a concise look at Japan over the last seventy years through the eyes of one of that country's great thinkers. Little did I know how much he yearned to be away from Japan, if for no other reason, to learn to appreciate it more through his absence. What Shuichi Kato provides is an in depth look into his reasoning for wanting to be away from Japan and a detailed account of his life and in the process gives the reader a taste of Japan's contemporary history and the adventures of a Japanese abroad throughout Europe. Of particular interest is Kato's perspective on the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This section is worth reading the whole book for. While not for everyone, 'A Sheep's Song' is recommended for those looking for a world perspective that is intriguing and entertaining.
