I don't think he was there.......2005-12-06
While Ogden's writing is pretty good, the facts are way out of line. He refers to the M-79 as being twenty millimeter when in fact it was forty millimeter. He also says that he changed his underwear as often as he could. No grunt ever wore underwear in 'Nam because it caused nasty jungle rot in the crotch. He amkes numreous other mistakes that only someone who wasn't there would make. The book is BOGUS.
this book rocks.......2003-02-19
This is a great book, I have read almost every book out there on Vietnam and this as good as any. Very similar to 'GUNS UP' which I read just before this . Yes the writing style is different but very funny and a welcome variation. I imagine the author had to find some way to deal with all that he went through. If you like this kind of book you won't be disapointed, the action scenes are great.
green knight, red mourning.......2002-12-01
i read this book several years ago and was completely blown away by it. ogden paints a picture of what vietnam was like for a small, scared kid first hand. he holds nothing back in his writing. after reading it again it still moved me. his account of hand to hand combat to the death and his views of day to day life are very vivid. i recommend this book to all readers to get a feel what it was like in the 'nam.
Disappointed.......2002-11-10
I am always glad to see new work on the Vietnam War. It is also very difficult for me to be critical of the authors out of respect for their experience. Unfortunately, that's not where Ogden takes me. I felt as though I were reading about a group of sadistic Boy Scouts in a very bent version of the "Lord of the Flies"; rather than the United States Marine Corp. I think that Ogden is obviously a talented writer and perhaps I really don't understand his approach. I do know however that I was disappointed and didn't feel enlightened in one way or the other.
Lightweight Book.......2002-11-02
The book is long on words and feelings and short on substance. I wonder if the feelings are accurate for the events described or were dreamt up afterwards. It's really a series of vignettes in florid prose that doesn't quite ring true to me.

Book Description
1920. Few, if any, of the mystics stand out more prominently than that giant of the north, the illumined 18th century Swedish seer, Emanuel Swedenborg. In some respects he is unique. Although one of the greatest of our modern philosophers and mystics, he is but little studied, and still less understood, being looked upon as a visionary pure and simple. Swainson relates a biographical sketch of this prominent man and his beliefs. Contents: scientific education; seership; character; doctrine of correspondence; divine humanity; last judgment; charity and faith; heaven and hell; Swedenborg's claims; reason of seership; limitations; new Jerusalem.

Asthmatics- this is not the solution.......2006-02-20
I read Richard Firsheins book with much interest. Yes, it is well written and contains factual information but I found my asthma was as bad after reading it as it was before. The book did little to improve my condition - it did not reverse it.
In all my search- only one book solved my problem- it is called Asthma Free naturally by Patrick McKeown and it does what it says it will do. It teaches readers how to correct their overbreathing based on the work of Russian respiratory professor Konstantin Buteyko. This book is a real gem and should be made mandatory reading for all asthmatics.
Wrong theory?.......2005-12-04
Although I greatly admire Dr. Firschein for his initiative, my experience with asthma has taught me to be skeptical of the theory of correcting breathing presented in the book. If you consider how a normal person takes a natural deep breath you will see that the chest is vigorously expanded and the upper abdomen is drawn in and upward (Gray's Anatomy). It therefore seems highly arguable that an asthmatic simply "gets stuck" in his frantic effort to take a deep inspiration, and that the upward straining of the shoulders so typical of an attack is not pathological and the deep breath should be taught by correctly learning from a healthy breather in all details. Also, a healthy breather tends to restrict the inflow of air during the deep inspiration with his lips and/teeth.
If taking a deep breath is regarded as a distinct maneuver (like a yawn or sigh), then it is just a case of an asthmatic failing to do it. It is not a question of his breathing wrongly by being misguided. Therefore, diaphragmatic breathing as advocated in the book should be treated as something of a different kind. Regards, Richard Friedel s3e0101@mailin.lrz-muenchen.de
Please read this review.......2005-05-26
There is significant evidence that the root cause of many, if not most, cases of asthma (and many allergies as well) is deficiency of magnesium. This fact is discussed in detail by Dr. Carolyn Dean in her excellent book The Miracle of Magnesium. Dr. Dean recommends 600 mg of supplemental magnesium daily. People with asthma who follow Dr. Dean's advice about daily magnesium supplementation often improve dramatically even if they have continued to struggle with asthma under other treatments which omit magnesium supplementation. If you are suffering from asthma please read Dr. Dean's excellent book and follow her advice regarding daily magnesium supplementation. It may well be the most important thing you will ever due to relieve this terrible ailment. By the way, although a variety of magnesium supplements are available, and beneficial, chelated magnesium -- which is readily available in most health food stores -- is the most effective.
Let Diet be Your Medicine!.......2004-11-14
As a lifelong asthma sufferer and an Ehlers-Danlos Patient, I was told my prognosis was poor. The drugs were destroying my body and yet were no longer relieving the problems. When my daughter starting suffering herself, I found this book...and now our whole approach to healing is thru diet and supplementation. Within a year, both of us are better than the doctors could have imagined. This book has paid for itself hundreds of times over, in the lack of doctor visits and medicne co-pays alone!
read it, the author is no a quack.......2004-07-25
I've run into people who claim that doctors who advocate getting off of medications and using alternative methods are quacks. I agree that there are many quacks out there, but Dr. Firshein is not one of them.
Years ago, I was on 4 different asthma medications and now I'm completely drug free! I've had some asthma problem from time to time since getting off of the medications, but I feel that I'm now more intelligent about isolating the cause so I'm now able to control it without going to the doctor. What I find interesting is that I've virtually followed the same advice Dr. Firshein gives in his book without having read it. He outlines a method call the Comprehensive Asthma Prevention Program or CAP. In the CAP program, he outlines methods such as breathing exercises, visualization, biofeedback and locating and eliminating the source of your problem. He also talks a great deal about diet and exercise. There are certain foods which help repair the damage asthma may cause and prevent this disease from causing further damage. Exercise can't be emphasized enough for asthmatics. I see no reason why any asthma sufferer who conscientiously follows Firshein's CAP program wouldn't be able to get to the point where he/she requires no medications. I'm living proof that one can get off of asthma medications if determined. I simply refused to be sickly and use inhalers 3 or 4 times a day. As Firshein points out, asthma medications can cause more health problems than most realize. "Locked Lung" syndrome is a condition which is caused by overdosing on an inhaler. What happens is that the patient reaches the point where his inhaler won't work as well as it had before so he keeps using it. Eventually, the lungs completely choke themselves off and the patient can die unless he gets immediate medical attention.
So the imformation is definately out there it's just a matter of following it. The problem with most however is that we want a quick fix. We're constantly bombarded by ads telling us: "if you can't breathe, take a pill or puff on an inhaler", "if your stomach hurts, take a pill", "if you have high cholesterol, take a pill", "if your toe hurts, take a pill". Don't get me wrong, medications have their place and in some situations they are a necessity but so many people don't really need them and abuse them. The best doctors are those who try to suggest ways of working your way off medications (like Dr. Firshein) for things such as asthma instead of blindly prescribing medications.

Many of the cheeses portrayed in this delightful bookstracciata, giuncata, formaggio di fossa, formaggetta della valle Argentinaare not household names and they probably never will be. They're a few of the 201 traditional Italian farmhouse cheeses lovingly described in this new book from Slow Food International as a "contribution to the conservation of a vast heritage of local products, born of Italy's extraordinarily varied landscapes, natural environments, dairy breeds, and cheesemaking techniques."
Customer Reviews:
Fun to read.......2007-09-05
This is a fun book to read if you are interested in Italian cheeses. Each cheese has a photo and a nice description. The only improvement I would suggest would be to provide similar consistent information on each cheese such as flavor, texture, etc. While this information is often supplied, it is buried in the text making comparison among the different cheeses difficult. But it's a great little book, very comprehensive and interesting as a cultural review of the country's cheese.
Yum!.......2007-05-13
This is an incredible and thorough resource on Italian cheeses. It doesn't have every Italian cheese known to man, but it comes close. The book is organized by region, and each page is devoted to one cheese. Fun to read if you love exploring new foods and a great resource if you're traveling to Italy.

The greatest loss of all is the pleasure of eating foods that are made without the restrictions of time. They're a few of the 201 traditional Italian farmhouse cheeses lovingly described in this new book from Slow Food International as a "contribution to the conservation of a vast heritage of local products, born of Italy's extraordinarily varied landscapes, natural environments, dairy breeds, and cheesemaking techniques." Starting with illustrated descriptions of traditional and industrial cheesemaking, Slow Food's authors take us through the processes of buying, tasting, and storing cheeses. Dictionaries of tasting terms and the language of cheeses and cheesemaking provide essential preludes for the heart of this book--descriptions of Italy's farmhouse cheeses, traditionally made from cow's, ewe's, and goat's milk. Organized by region and accompanied by elegant color photographs, each description covers how the cheese is made and matured, along with historical and geographic nuggets. Written by people in love with farmhouse cheeses, and with everything small, local, slow, and traditional foods and food systems represent, this is an informative and hopeful book, celebrating a rich, rural European tradition. This book will make you start packing your bags for a cheese lover's tour of Italy.

Book Description
"Pets offer us companionship and, quite often, their companionship lessens the stress in our lives." Helene E. Merrick These endearing stories show how pets can be in your heart forever. Photographs and artwork show some of the actual pets and many of the photographs show the pets performing their work that is told in the accompanying stories. This is a wonderful opportunity to call to your attention the plight of animal shelters everywhere. Their cages are filled to overflowing. Thousands of animals wait in the shelters for those who will rescue them, for those of you who believe they will bring love and protection into your homes. One friend adopted a 5-year-old Golden Retriever, blind in one eye and with an unstable hind leg. He has become the most-lovable, protective, playful member of the doctor's family. Another friend adopted a dog who thought three legs was all he ever needed when one had to be removed after an accident. If you cannot adopt, do give your financial support to your local animal shelter. Your support in whatever way helps to provide shelter for the many animals awaiting new and happy homes. The treatment of all animal species in our world begs for human responsibility.

Perhaps the best-looking and most complete guide to creating wedding accessories, Handcrafted Weddings demonstrates that you can achieve exactly the wedding look you want for less than the store-bought price, and you need only a modicum of crafting experience to accomplish most of it. Organized by theme, the five sections detail projects involving stationery, bridal party accessories, ceremony accents, reception decor, and memorabilia. In addition to dozens of beautiful traditional creations, there are wonderful touches of whimsy, such as the gold-accented white sneakers and baseball cap that the bride can swap for the formal veil and shoes at reception time; the card holder constructed from a white mailbox adorned with pine branches and papier-mâché birds; the mirror-tile centerpieces that double the effect of candlelight; or the fairy-tale fantasy of a twig arbor (surprisingly simple: anchor branches in buckets and swath in tulle and twinkle lights). There are so many eye-catching ideas that the hardest part may be choosing which ones to make or finding the time to do them all. --Amy Handy

The most comprehensive guide to aromatherapy ever published. Over 200,000 copies sold world-wide.
Customer Reviews:
great stuff.......2002-02-21
i borrowed this book from the library (before i bought it!) and it was a good read. It is thorough, well presented, and has enough recipes to get you started. You are steered on the right path in terms of oils that you should be cautious with ( which is a far cry from the recipes that you get on the 'net that just throws out any oil/herb combination without telling you the risks). For a starter aromatherapist, i can truly say that i do feel confident with the products that i make for myself and my family. It is really worth the price and more. You will find yourself reaching for it over and over again.
The reason why i gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that the illustrations could have been more oraganized, and more attractively done. It may sound like splitting hairs, but if you tried to use the illustrations as a guide for plants for infused oils, you may be disappointed.
Aromatherapy A-Z.......2000-04-22
I picked up this book without really knowing what I was buying. I am glad that I did. It is jammed with valuable info. I have had it in my library for a couple of years now and it is one that I keep reaching for time and again. It is a book that every aromatherapist should have.
A wonderful reference book!.......1998-06-15
This is one of the first Aromatherapy books I bought and use it constantly. This is a great book when you want more than just a few lines about a certain oil. The formulas/recipes in the back of the book are wonderful too. I recommend this book to anyone interested in aromatherapy...beginners and pro's!
Definitely the most comprehensive aromatherapy book yet!.......1998-01-02
Aromatherapy: An A-Z is a comprehensive guide to the therapeutic use of essential oils and herbal remedies. Patricia Davis has compiled a vast amount of medical, pharmaceutical, and scientific knowledge into an organized, fascinating, easy-to-understand guidebook. Her expertise as an aromatherapist is reflected in her introduction to essential oils and various natural healing methods and procedures. The historical origins and traditions of healing herbs are presented with recent scientific findings of their properties and chemistry to make this book truly the most comprehensive guide to aromatherapy yet.

I totally agree.......2000-07-13
Gerald is absolutely right: this book is wonderful. TASCHEN is probably one of the greatest art editors around and always comes up with great ideas, such as this book who shows-- let's say-- a "hidden" side of Chagall's great talent. There are in fact few people who know that Chagall also mastered the art of tapestry, and this book allows you yo discover the art of tapestry to perfection. Everything in that book is so perfect: the format, the price, the quality of impression, the interesting information... It makes a cute little gift. Once again, excellent work for TASCHEN! I hope that many Chagall fans will discover this great book.
Marc Chagall: Tapestries.......2000-07-07
What a delight to discover an aspect of Chagall's iconology that has only rarely been spotlighted as it is here. Jacob Ball-Teshuva's text is insightful snd very readable (which not every art book can say) and I'm pleased that due attention and credit is shown toward tapestry-weaver Yvette Couquil-Prince. A word about the illustrations. So often one sees how color plates can "suffer in the translation". These, however, are dazzling. This book is superlative. Great things can indeed come in small packages. I recommend this title to anyone interested in the art of Marc Chagall and/or the art and craft of tapestry.
