Customer Reviews:
The best training book I have used ! - read why.......2007-09-12
Seriously, I think I have found the 4th piece of the puzzle. 1) I have already found an excellent book on diet/nutrition for fitness, sports & bodybuilding. 2) I also found an excellent book on supplements for the same goals. 3) I found an good body building & fitness online support community site. Now this! - the best & well scientifically supported book I have read on training. None of the above books or sources covered training & periodization on the same level as this bk. I have come to believe that it's best to get info from the "experts" based on their true expertise= just because someone is an expert on supplements doesn't mean they're the authority on training. Pros: Basically the MD, Phd & scientist/former body-builder on this book- apparently know what their talking about when it comes to training & it is well organized. Cons: for someone brand new to working out or even remotely thinking about body-building may find this book intimidating. I say take your time and perhaps read it 2-3xs to understand or perhaps join an online community or find a mentor and connect the dots between this book & their advice. Good Luck!! Highly recommend.
Excellent resource.......2006-11-04
I had been lifting weights and working extremely hard with little to no results. I was getting extremely frustrated and discouraged. A gentleman that works out at the same gym I do told me about Periodization Training and this book. He let me borrow his old copy for a week to review and see what I had thought about it. Let's say I purchased my own copy the next day. I like the information content of this book. It made it easy for me to change my workout and become more effective. Others at the gym were so impressed with how I was doing with my "new" workout they have been asking and asking about this book. I have since bought two more copies to give to friends to try. It was the best $14 I have EVER spent!!!
A book you actually have to READ.......2006-06-15
This book is not a typical bodybuilder book since it is packed with (simplified) scientific expanations on how the body works and explanation of why the author's training method works the way it does. He goes into discussions of both diet and exercise using a method he developed called periodization - typically used to peak athletic performance and strength for contests, it can also be used to avoid overtraining and plateaus when applied to body building, power lifting, weight lifting as well as sports training. Successfully used by East Europeans in the 70's and 80's (though the record is besmirched by steriods) - the method should work when used by so-called 'natural bodybuilders.' To that end the author also goes into a discussion of legal supplements (creatine and so on) and attempts to suggest things that work and things that do not.
This book is lousy if you expect to be spoon fed an exercise routine, diet and supplement regime similar to many other books. But the book *isn't* lousy. It is an excellent resource to draw upon when creating an exercise program to utilize periodization and the sorts of diets you need to follow depending upon your goals.
This book is information packed, as well as having a typical large section on exercises and how to do them.
If you are going to reap the benefits of this book, you *will* have to read it, possibly several times, before trying to employ their methods. In that it is probably one of the more substantial books out there and useful if you think that understanding the theory behind your routine is important in your trianing regime.
Also the author mentions what he calls "recreational bodybuilders" which is 90% of those that train in the book - not in detail, but it has a mention and a few suggestions.
a scientific version of Flex magazine.......2006-04-22
This book is like reading a Flex magazine with more graphs and scientific data. You will be hard pressed to find any pages without a picture of a juiced up pro bodybuilder, and a caption with Bomap commenting on how great they look. And Bompa seems to neglect the idea that steriods play a role one sucsess. Good thing I only wasted $12.00.
Not to broad of information........2006-02-06
Even though this book wasn't expensive, it wasn't all I thought it was. It is mostly about hypertrophy and is totally geared to bodybuilding. The periodization part is usefull though.
Book Description
What could be a more fun and delicious way to celebrate American culture than through the lore of our favorite foods? That's what John T. Edge does in his smart, witty, and compulsively readable new series on the dishes everyone thinks their mom made best. If these are the best-loved American foods-ones so popular they've come to represent us-what does that tell us about ourselves? And what do the history of the dish and the regional variations reveal?
There are few aspects of life that carry more emotional weight and symbolism than food, and in writing about our food icons, Edge gives us a warm and wonderful portrait of America -by way of our taste buds. After all, "What is patriotism, but nostalgia for the foods of our youth?" as a Chinese philosopher once asked.
In Fried Chicken, Edge tells an immensely entertaining tale of a beloved dish with a rich history. Freed slaves cooked it to sell through the windows of train cars from railroad platforms in whistle-stop towns. Children carried it in shoe boxes on long journeys. A picnic basket isn't complete without it. It is a dish that is deeply Southern, and yet it is cooked passionately across the country. And what about the variations? John T. Edge weaves a beguiling tapestry of food and culture as he takes us from a Jersey Shore hotel to a Kansas City roadhouse, from the original Buffalo wings to KFC, from Nashville Hot Chicken to haute fried chicken at a genteel Southern inn. And, best of all, he gives us fifteen of the ultimate recipes along the way.
Customer Reviews:
Death blow to the McNugget Culture!!!.......2007-09-10
John T. Edge may be the true savior of Southern Cuisine. In Fried Chicken, Edge does a fine job at explaining that Fried Chicken is really a multi-cultural phenomenon and not a Southern-only cuisine (as much as we hate to admit it).
Edge's stories include many great characters and destinations. I enjoyed getting to meet these people through his eyes. His sense of travel and wandering in search of the "Meaning of Fried Chicken" reminds me of a Jimmy Buffett style story, riddled with an unforgettable cast of characters and a journey that takes him through such a diverse list of cities.
America's culture is one that cannot be defined. People and society differ from region to region. It is fun to see how a fried bird can become a common thread, or a universal symbol of America.
It may be time to replace the Bald Eagle as our National Bird with shoebox full of fried drumsticks and bottle of hot sauce!
Recipes are a great bonus!
I'm looking forward to reading the rest of his "American Story/Passion" series.
American Chook........2007-08-18
Very informative i now realize the love the yanks have for some fried chook takes me away from the greesy KFC i will try some of these dishes.
Can't wait to read this book.......2005-06-28
I first heard about John T. Edge on WHYY last week, regarding his new book on hamburgers. But after noticing his book about Fried Chicken got 5 stars, I can wait to read them all. And by the way, I live right down the street from Gourmet Fried Chicken on Cermak Road in Chicago. It is wonderful Fried Chicken. But does anyone know if Martins in Montgomery, AL is still around. during my year living in the deep south, it was my Friday Dinner Ritual.
Can Fried Chicken get ANY better?.......2005-04-23
John T. Edge's book "Fried Chicken: An American Story", is the first in a series on iconic american food. And Mr. Edge has hit the heart of this chicken-loving foodie with this one. I hate to admit it, but I can't stop salivating. And I'm yearning to be able to take time off from my work, jump into the car, and head off on a road trip to all of the different places mentioned in his book.
"Fried Chicken" is a quick read, just under 200 pages, and I managed to finish it in under a day. But that's because I couldn't put it down. Mr. Edge's fun and flavor-filled stories about his search for the perfect fried chicken in America had me longing to taste every different take on the classic finger food that he did.
For instance, if I ever get to Chicago, I know there's a visit to Gourmet Fried Chicken on Cermak Road in my future. Mr. Edge's recounting of his visit there and his meeting with the owner, Chef Luciano, gives me reason to stop by and try the fare. Ditto Sam Lee's Chicken Valley at the Pike Street Market in Seattle, and four different places in the small town of Barberton, Ohio. Perhaps I'll take a quick road trip there next time I get out to visit my mother in Ohio. And every other hotel, bistro, or fast food restaurant Mr. Edge speaks of would, if it were possible, be getting a visit from me in the near future.
Edge also includes, as the book jacket indicates, the "essential recipes" from each of his road stories, either the exact one from one of the eateries or his own close approximation, for those times when the cooks behind the chickens therein wouldn't give up all of their secrets. And Edge has thoughtfully included an appendix listing the best places to each chicken, complete with addresses and telephone numbers. Yes, this book will find it's way into my overnight bag anytime I travel...
If the rest of Edge's books in this new series are this complete (there are two more right now, "APPLE PIE" and "HAMBURGERS AND FRIES", for which reviews are forthcoming), the entire series is going to be worthy of having on the "Shelf of FAME" in any foodie's bookcase. "FRIED CHICKEN: AN AMERICAN STORY" is a fast, fun, and delicious read for all, and is absolutely essential for any fellow fancier of fowl. I guarantee you will find yourself seated beside Mr. Edge as he travels the country looking for the best foods. And thanks to the recipes, you DON'T have to do it vicariously. You can be there too. Or at least simulate being there. And that's the next best thing, all things considered.
A lot of culture, delicious writing on food, and recipes.......2005-03-30
This is the kind of food book I really enjoy. It is writing about food, and does provide recipes that you can try on your own, but its real delight comes from writing about the people who made those recipes and whose life is about making really good food. And the writer needs to be able to write skillfully enough to enable to reader to taste that food along with him.
John T. Edge does a great job in this little book. He takes a dish we all think we know and uses what he calls its iconic status to show how such a common dish is really a window into the larger and more diverse culture. It can't help being adapted to local conditions and tastes or from the points of origin of the fry cook. In this book he takes us all around the country. We get to go to a Church Social, meet with legendary chicken chefs, go to famous chicken joints. Edge shows us chicken straight up, with varying degrees of spice, with flavors of Asia, Europe, and several South of the Border.
All the while, the author ties it in to various aspects of all the cultures involved and how it has all melded into America. He never loses sight of the fact that this dish had slavery as one of its points of origin. There is a fascinating account of how newly freed women slaves would fry up chicken and wait by the train stations to sell it to hungry (and often smoke ash covered) passengers. This culture kept on for quite awhile and recipes and cooking methods were jealously guarded.
If you love food and enjoy reading about food and culture, you will get a lot from this delightful book. I was fortunate to attend a chicken dinner with the author at Zingerman's Roadhouse here in Ann Arbor, MI last week. I could never have imagined the broad range of tastes I was fortunate to experience from Fried Chicken. Mr. Edge was a most interesting speaker and a very friendly gentleman.
Enjoy!

Book Description
Have you ever pondered why some troubled marriages succeed while other seemingly fairytale marriages flounder and fail?
According to Dr. Robert O.A. Samms, the key to a successful marriage is not the absence of conflicts or problems, but rather the presence of the appropriate strategies to resolve them. In Making Marriage Meaningful, Dr. Samms examines the dynamic inner workings of a modern family to determine its strengths and weaknesses, as well as its successes and failures. All of these elements must be analyzed in order to improve a marriage. The real-life situations described in the book also give those couples contemplating marriage some very sound principles to ponder.
Making Marriage Meaningful suggests practical, workable strategies for couples in troubled marriages and for happily married couples seeking a greater understanding of the marital relationship. The book is also helpful for single, separated, and divorced people who want to avoid problems in their present or future relationships and who desire to tweak their passion for success.
Dr. Samms includes his personal, public, and private views on topics such as:
- Commitment
- Compromise
- Children
- Communication
- Sex
- Spirituality, and much more
Based on Dr. Samms's own forty-year marriage and his comprehensive research, Making Marriage Meaningful provides realistic strategies for making your marriage successful.

Customer Reviews:
Another fine guide for cloth dollmakers by Miriam Gourley!.......2004-12-30
Doll artist and author Miriam Christensen Gourley has written another great book on cloth dollmaking. I loved her first volume, but the dolls and patterns in this one are just as, or maybe even more fun than in the first book!
There is something in "Crafting Cloth Dolls" suitable to all sewing skill levels. Beginners will be pleased with the well-illustrated instruction and more advanced dollmakers are offered more challenging subjects, as well as good clay over cloth instructions.
Gourley has an excellent writing style and offers clear-cut, well-illustrated instructions and helpful tips and techniques, from wigmaking to shoemaking. Everything in this book makes sense!
Highly recommended to dollmakers looking to learn, polish their skills or be inspired by good dollmaking craft.
A great book for more experienced dollmakers.......2002-04-23
I knew I would enjoy this book even before I opened it, as Miriam Gourley's previous book on cloth dollmaking was so good. The earlier book had more basics in it, I feel this book is for more experienced dollmakers who want to be a bit adventurous. Miriam includes some interesting sections on home-made felt and felting, armatures, cloth doll construction and painting effects. For me, the best part was the 10 cloth doll projects at the back of the book, ranging from a simple cloth doll to a policeman to a doll with felted clothing. I loved the charm, diversity and sheer adventurousness of these projects. Definitely worth buying if you have any interest in cloth dolls at all.
Beautiful Book.......2002-02-09
I really like the book "Crafting Cloth Dolls" for several reasons. It is loaded with color photos of dolls ranging from the simple, painted on faced muslin body styles to complicated, wire armature bodied dolls with clay and needle sculpted faces. A basic doll body pattern is included as well for users to create and expound upon.
Doll techniques covered include armature making, dyeing doll hair, wig making, shoe making, fairy wing making, face painting, and drafting doll clothing patterns. A technique for needle sculpted faces and a button joining technique were drawn and explained.
Patterns with body and clothing templates, supply lists, and clearly written instructions are included with the book to make 10 different styles of dolls. The dolls include Tulip (the doll on the cover), a tomato man, a constable, medieval knight, Japanese woman (from Japanese "Little Peach" fairy tale), simple rag doll, felted doll, felt body doll with paper clay mask, whimsical doll made of wire clothed with embillishments, and a very elegant maid doll.
The final pages of the book include a source sheet to locate the various doll artists that contributed to the book and order their respective patterns.
With so many doll making techniques abounding, this book cannot possibly cover them all; however, the patterns and easy to follow instruction with this book make it an excellent addition to the beginning doll makers library and an excellent source of inspiration for the more advanced doll maker.
Amazon.com
A good basic introduction to the fundamentals of dollmaking, Creating & Crafting Dolls explains how to sew dolls from your own fabrics or make them from purchased blank bodies. Beginners and novices will learn how to utilize two easy patterns to construct simple but charming doll bodies, and how to adorn them with a variety of hairstyles, facial features, clothing, and accessories. (A number of patterns are included for the clothing and accessories.) Though a bit plain-looking--mostly text augmented with line drawings--the procedures are clearly explained and the book contains 14 full-color spreads showing photographs of many different versions of the basic dolls. Unlike other dollmaking books aimed at the art-doll audience, the results of the techniques covered in this book are dolls that can actually be played with by children.
Customer Reviews:
a great book to spark the imagination!.......1999-01-22
This book includes a very simple doll pattern that can be embellished in countless ways. The imaginative choices of the authors are fascinating to see and make you want to start creating immediately! Wonderful book for a beginning dollmaker or the experienced looking for new ideas.
Hundreds of color photos of beautiful and creative dolls!.......1998-01-26
I have been using this book as a source of craft inspiration for many years. The range of fabulous color photos of so many varied doll creations is better than any other I have yet to see.

This book is intended to give correct and practical information on the Art of Bonsai. The horticultural and artistic aspects of Bonsai are covered in depth, and the reader is also presented with knowledge of the historical and philosophical aspects of the art.Published at $29.95 Our last copies available at $14.98
Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive coverage for beginners to experts.......2000-06-16
This text was the one i'd been searching for so long. I've purchased a dozen bonsai books over the years and finally found Koreshoff's book. It's straight foreward, simple, and explains so many things i'd been confused about that other bonsai books don't touch on like the philosophical purpose of the shapes of trees. Bottom line is this: you can get many bonsai books and get close to what Koreshoff has done, or you can purchase hers and be done. You won't regret it.
A compendium of practical and innovative bonsai techniques........1998-03-13
With few color photographs but many excellent line drawings and lucid writing, the author covers all the essentials. The techniques presented are both practical and innovative. The chapters on shaping, soil, and styling are exceptional. Only Naka's two volume set rivals this publication.

Book Description
For more than sixty years, Hirohito was Emperor a confusing blend of "absolute" ruler, constitutional monarch, and god. Although much was done in his name, we know little about Hirohito the man or the part he played in the making of modern Japan. In
Emperor Hirohito
and Showa Japan, Stephen Large tests the controversies surrounding Hirohito against the written evidence from his entire reign.
This political history of Showa Japan is unique in its scope and objectivity. Many studies have focused on the War or on the imperial conspiracy theory of Showa politics. In this comprehensive study, Stephen Large provides a sweeping review of this era which spans enormous upheavals in state and society and identifies broad patterns of cause and effect while relating the monarchy to the complex problem of political power.
Hirohito was confronted first with the political ambitions of the military and then with the democratizing reforms of the Occupation period. Inthis informative study, Stephen Large shows how the Emperor's character and personal influence were to prove as crucial as his authority in preserving a significant monarchy.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent, even-handed biography balances out Bix and Behr.......2005-05-09
This biography goes a long way towards a balanced, even-handed, and realistic portrait of an Emperor who has been mischaracterized as either completely powerless or disingenuously powerful by recent biographers such as Herbert Bix. I believe Stephen Large's book is an excellent reference and goes a long way to exposing the overreach of Herbert Bix's interpretation of history while nevertheless agreeing that Hirohito had more involvement in the war effort than has been previously assumed. Citing numerous original source documents, of particular interest to me was the writings of the aged genro Saionji, it becomes quite clear that Hirohito was buffeted by several conflicting impulses: an initial desire to avoid war while remaining patriotic and a desire to avoid influencing government while at the same time willing to make exceptions in rare cases. I believe Large makes a convincing case that Hirohito was not, in fact, initially enthusiastic about the war, and he did side with the so-called "peace party" --- it was only later in the war that he became more involved, and Saionji lamented that the Emperor no longer listened to him --- however I think it's fairly clear that the Emperor was merely going along with a decision that was certainly not his to make, and by the end, when defeat became obvious, he gratefully came back to his "peace party" roots. I think there's little doubt that Hirohito was a man thrust into a position of symbolic influence when he wasn't well-suited for the task, and Large does a great job of documenting and validating this view.
I highly recommend this book for serious scholars of wartime Japan.
Emperor Hirohito?.......2003-07-28
When did he become Emperor and where did Mr. Lange get his information? Doesn't he know that President Wilson lied about Pearl Harbor and that the real Emperor is not from Tokyo Castle at all but south where the older castles are? Is he sane?
